I had such a wonderful experience at La Hacienda Del Amigo in El Paso. The food is made fresh right after you order, and you can truly taste the difference in every bite. The huevos rancheros were absolutely incredible -- hands down some of the best flavor I've ever had. The steak with huevos, rice, and beans was extremely delicious, perfectly seasoned, and cooked just right. Everything tasted authentic, homemade, and full of real Mexican flavor. Wife says she wants tacos and we decide to see what this place had to offer. It's a small place in an industrial area, off I10. Walk up, door is wide open, only outdoor table with shade is occupied by one guy on his phone. Walk in, say hello and the cook comes out. He turns on the air, but it's not AC. Fortunately, it's not that hot. We order two taco plates which come with four street tacos, beans and rice. The menu board has no prices. We each grab a softdrink from the cooler. Food comes out and dig in the chicken and steak tacos both have good flavor, beans and rice are okay. We finish and ask for the total and he tells me $28 which for what we got seemed high. It was four street tacos so it's basically two regular tacos. I double check and he confirms it's $28. I feel like we got hit with a gringo tax. YMMV. read more

A great find tucked in a tiny place behind a truck stop between a truck wash and a truck garage.I You may find yourself driving the only vehicle on the street without a commercial license required to operate it. The restaurant is a little house that's been converted (I know this because the bathroom had an unused shower and tub). The menu is simple. I had been looking for a good chili relleno, but didn't see that on the menu at first. The owner asked whether I liked chicken and steak and I took that as a recommendation for the eponymous plate. That was a good move. The place is a little worn around the edges, almost a hole-in-the-wall, but it is clean and everything is fresh and tastes delicious. (Just don't expect Jennifer Anniston to greet you in an Applebee's-style uniform bedecked with flair). The green salsa is hardy with a bit of a kick. The drink cooler is the standard Coca-Cola glass door box, but but at the top there are some locally bottled soft drinks such as pineapple soda. As I was eating I finally noticed the chili relleno on the menu, and ordered one. It was exactly right: not too much batter, not too much cheese, and perfectly cooked. I look forward to driving back through there, as out of the way as El Paso is for a Louisianan, especially to enjoy the chili relleno. read more

This is our new favorite Mexican food restaurant. The owner is so friendly. We have already gone back five times. It is a place that feels familiar and friendly. It is a restaurant that makes you feel as if you are back at your Tia's or Wela's cooking with the family around. It is never crowded but with a steady flow of customers telling one another hello. The food is delicious and home made. You can see into the kitchen as you look around at the decorations on the wall waiting for the food or can get up to grab yourself a soda. This place has a wonderful feeling with wonderful food cooked with love. We would frequent L&J's but this is where we now prefer. read more

What we were served as caldo was hot water with raw pieces of potatoes and carrots. what he calls picadillo was soupy pieces of potato with sprinkles of ground beef out of the freezer reheated in the microwave. He took 40 minutes to serve 2 plates, extremely small portions, no salsa or chips. Do your self a favor donate him 22.00 DLL but don't eat the food. read more

This place is a GEM! I have to admit, getting here was interesting to say the least! It's quite hard to spot this little shack when it's tuck right next to a semi truck car wash! It the least likely location for a restaurant BUT I super love it! We were greeted by a very cheerful gentleman. The inside is quite small with only 4 tables - just one table seats 4. I ordered menudo (it wasn't on the menu but it sure was available if you ask for it). My hubby got the Mexican steak plate. One kiddo got 2 orders of chicken quesadillas and the littler one got 2 orders of the egg, cheese, and retried beans burrito. They actually only ordered one each but then they were still hungry so we ended up asking for another serving for them. The kind cook (he's probably the owner) gladly cooked them up for the boys. The food is hands down authentic good Mexican cooking. I'm glad we're not the picky types when it comes to ambiance. As we were leaving, I noticed that the restaurant sign was flipped to "closed". We're the last guests in there and I'm glad they still took us in. The total bill was less than $40 for all 4 of us so that was another affordable surprise. As we were leaving, the kind gentleman walked us out the door and bid us goodbye and said he hopes to see us again. I told him we're just passing by on our way to Phoenix. We just saw this on Yelp and decided to check them out. He then said that whenever we come back to El Paso, that we have a home there with him. I had gone here a couple years ago and vaguely remember the food was okay. I do remember a real long wait time. Today I gave them another try. Early on a Sunday. I got there there were 4 people eating and one guy waiting. He was upset because he told the cook he had called an hour early and still hadn't gotten his food. Meanwhile I'm standing there just waiting just to place my order. After 20 minutes he gets the guy's food and I ask if he has pozole? He said he ran out?!?! I asked if theres menudo. He said no. Then proceeds to walk back into the kitchen instead of seeing if I wanted something else. I left. Very rude and unorganized owner. The guy can't handle more than one order at once. He does not have food as advertised. He should hire someone to help him and not waste people's time. The place is tiny and dirty. Never again! read more

I hobbled over from the Petro (down in my back), all the chairs are yp on the tables, only 2 people there. The 2 cooks. They were closed, fixing to walk out. But no! He said "we will serve you"! Oh my gosh. What a great find. Cruising through on our way to San Antonio. Found this place on Yelp. Had good reviews so we stopped. Place is very small. In fact we passed it and had to turn around. This place will be our new stopping point. Tacos were amazing. The chili relleno burrito was fantastic (and I'm really picky about my rellenos). This is a must stop if you're in the area. It's behind the Petro Truck stop and beside the truck wash. It's no longer a free building but a vibrant array of colors(purple, blue, yellow exc). The food was absolutely delicious and the gentleman who took our order was so friendly and spoke very good English. All the other customers were very nice and we had a nice conversation with a couple of them. I did notice they charge a 3.9% fee if you use a credit or debt card but we paid in cash. The prices were very reasonable and won't break the bank. Do yourself a favor and try this place out next time you're in the area. I know we will!! read more

We both got the steak fajita plate. Don't embarrass yourself by asking for sour cream and all that other fluff that masks the true taste. None of that is needed. The steak is marinated to perfection. Oh my, what a wonderful find for a truck-driving old man. I hate all the fast food joints that seem to be all that the truck stops have an interest in partnering with. I've been wanting to try this little place for months but I've only been here on Sundays, the one day they're closed. I just asked the proprietor about the hours and he told me 10-6, Monday-Saturday. I'll be back more that a few times to try all the menu options, but today I can swear by the Mole Burrito. Shredded chicken in a tasty mole sauce, with some Mexican rice, wrapped up in a fresh and hot wrap. Ask for some sour cream, they'll give you all you need. Absolutely delicious. I love mole sauce and am always seeking it out, mostly left sad as so few places offer it. This place does it right! I can't wait to return. read more

Stopped on our way through El Paso. It's a green adobe building behind the Petro. It's really small but the food is amazing! They take debit cards and the service was outstanding!
