After eating here for 20 years, I am finally walking away from black bear diner on bell road. We have had a bad experience the last 4 times. It's only because we love this place that we kept coming back, hoping it would change. ITS THE COOKS, the food is either under cooked or burned. We came tonight to have breakfast for dinner. Only 5 people in the whole place and brought me raw bacon and sausage, and over cooked pancakes. I'm done, 50 bucks and time I will never get back. Underwhelmed for sure. When you walk in it's very cute with the bears, jukebox and pies but that's where it stops. Service is not good. Started with no one being a hostess and someone from the back going to find someone as we were stacking up in the lobby. Once seated our server took our drink order for an OJ and a water and returned 5 minutes later. (It was 7:15am and she only had one other table). Food took over 20 minutes to arrive and it was not good. Bacon was super greasy, fruit was mushy and no flavor to the Hobo Omelette. I ordered online and was able to pickup in Carside to go. The waffle was very good as was the sausage. Eggs were fair. I also ordered the fresh baked bear claw, classic with almond filling. I waited 20 minutes to be seated. The waitress came over and took my order. The food that was served to me was cold ..... eggs were overcooked and the hash browns were burnt. The biscuit was a joke ... it was so hard I could have thrown it at a window and it would break. I complained and the waitress made it right. It's a good spot to get a traditional type of breakfast. The pros: once we got seated and ordered the food came out extremely fast. The portion size is definitely respectable for the price. I got the eggs Benedict, it was pretty good. Hash browns were a little plain, probably low sodium and butter to cater to the older crowd (they list calories on the menu) The one thing I'd change is that we got on the waiting list when we came inside there's really no designated person to seat you. It's the same people that are collecting payment and also helping people get pies. We got in back of some big party paying their bill and ordering pie for a few minutes before we could even get seated. Not sure if it's just a short staff thing but it seems like a weird system. After you're done eating you have to go to the register to pay and then get change and go back to the table to leave a tip. read more

Food was tasty and was outstanding. Service was ok. When it came time to pay the bill there wasn't an "other" option for a tip. The minimum was 8 percent or eight dollars based on how much the bill was. The service was not worth a tip of this size. I could not change the amount of tip I could leave. read more

It's always dirty. Floors always have food and trash. Wash your windows once in awhile. Always dirty. How we miss the original BB Diner in Mt Shasta CA. So clean and delicious food. We will not return to this dump anymore. Oh...in the dessert case by the cash register there were small berry pies with green mold. Horrible service. Lady with tattoos and dermals on her back neck is not a good server (never got her name because she was never at the table.) She never checked in once ... I had a hair in my plate so I didn't get to eat because she never checked in till she gave us our check. I asked for iced coffee, she said she couldn't do it because they only make hot coffee... I said we don't have ice here ? Our drinks were empty the whole time. Other tables around us were complaining also. Manager didn't seem like she cared. My sisters and I pancakes were also very toasted and burnt on top. Manager only took off my meal when she should of taken both off for the complication. Go to another location!! read more

On January 8, 2023 my husband and I went to breakfast at the Glendale, AZ location; we have eaten at this location a few times before. We will share with you how very disappointed we were with today's customer greeting and quality and preparation of our entrees. Upon entering there was no greeter at the front reception area, but we could see two wait staff at the staging area visiting. About five minutes later a person came to the front reception area and asked how many. Sadly, she projected an attitude that showed indifference towards us a customers, she didn't care if she helped us or not. On to the entrees. My husband ordered the Bear's Choice Stuffed Blackberry French Toast with eggs over medium and crisp bacon. I ordered the Bear's Choice Waffle with eggs over medium and sausage. When served, my husband's French Toast was very overdone and hard, so much so that he could not cut it into pieces with a butter knife. He's not sure if the bear claw was old or had been sitting around in a warming oven and then reheated or if it was just overcooked. His entire entree was cold. My Waffle entrée was cold and the eggs were more than undercooked. The Waffle taste was good but so cold butter would not melt on it. We will accept some responsibility because we made the mistake of NOT sending the two entrees back to the kitchen. We like Black Bear restaurants but with the poor experience we had today we will not return to the Glendale, AZ location nor can we recommend that particular location. This particular restaurant is badly in need of an upgrade and serious deep cleaning. Every time we have been to this location it projects a feeling of being dirty. This particular restaurant appears to be the "orphan" in the Arizona chains; it almost appears to be neglected and doesn't seem to meet the standards of other Black Bear locations. Every time we have eaten at other Arizona Black Bear restaurants - Scottsdale or Goodyear, the service as well as the quality and preparation of food was great. Today, at Glendale, not so much. Not only were we disappointed in the food but the hostess appeared to be indifferent toward customers. We offer this to the owner(s)/management as constructive criticism. read more

Only my second time here. First time was many years ago with friends. This time was for a free birthday breakfast I received through their email club. We got there around 11am on a Saturday. Had about a 10 minute wait. The hostess was pleasant. Our server came to our table almost right away. We ordered the Bear Breakfast with sausage, two eggs and a waffle along with a side of bacon and toast. The coffee was good, and the food came out hot in a reasonable amount of time. The bacon was cooked just right and a nice thickness. The sausage was seasoned well. The waffle was okay but a bit sweet for my tastes. It had a sweet cream flavor. Overall, food was delicious. The service was excellent. Christine was our server. She did a fantastic job! Came by our table at all the right times even though she was fairly busy. Great local find and close to everything including our AirBnB. Enormous menu, but we settled for breakfast. Friendly waitstaff. I had a "lighter version" egg combination: delicious. Egg whites, spinach, mushrooms, fresh fruit and toast. Everything came out hot and delicious. Coffee refills were prompt. My hubby had: biscuits and gravy: very large portions. Come to this location a bunch and never had an issue with them. Usually receive 5 star service but today was very different. Our waitress was quick at serving us but missed half of our order when she was taking it. We never received our extra pancake and biscuit. When she was giving us a refill she gave me a different drink than I ordered and said "here is this drink the one you were drinking is out" she couldn't take the 2 seconds to come ask what I wanted to drink but she decided to assume what I wanted. She never came to check on us while we were eating and had to get a different waitress to help us out. I don't think I can come back to this location anymore and I will be looking for a new place. 5 year customer lost due to lack of customer service. read more

Ugh! So freaking disappointed. This was my Classic Eggs Benedict packaged to go. The English muffin was not toasted at all - was stale and soggy, eggs were not poached and actually more fried hard, and the sauce on top was separated and disgusting. So so sad after reading all the good reviews. (And yes, this picture is exactly how it was delivered. I only moved my fruit cup out of the way for the photo) Husband got the breakfast burrito and it was just alright. We asked for no jalapeños & it still came with jalapeños. It was also missing the refried beans which is the only reason we got the burrito and not the chorizo tacos. The burger was juicy and they did not skip on the avocado! But what really blew me away were the sweet potato fries. I was not expecting quality fries from a diner, but they were fresh!
