My wife and I arrived at the Glendale Black Bear location late morning on March 2, 2023. After a decent wait, we were seated and ordered our meal. My wife ordered the tuna melt with fries and I ordered the pot roast dinner. My wife said the tuna melt was okay but the fries were under cooked. My pot roast and mashed potatoes were smothered in gravy which is usually a warning sign. The pot roast was over cooked and clearly heated over many times. The roast was also very dry and had no flavor. I sent the meal back without any reorder. The waitress removed the roast from the bill. However, the manager never came by to see me at my request which is shameful. As a result, we will never visit any Black Bear location again and recommend you consider other dining options. read more

Tried their "all you can eat fish fry" yesterday. I really like Black Bear for most items especially the chicken Fred steak. The service is usually top notch but yesterday was so different. My husband and I decided to have dinner at the Black Bear Diner in Glendale after having our Honda serviced at the Honda dealer down the road. We enjoy the atmosphere, and the waiters and waitresses are so friendly. We were greeted by Jeff, a super waiter. He was so kind and helpful as we were deciding on our orders. I ordered the fish fry special (all you can eat). I never can eat it all in one sitting! My husband always enjoys the prime rib. We were greeted with Jeff's presence occasionally during our dinner. He would always check to make sure that we had everything that we needed. Before we left, we talked to Jeff and told him that he was an excellent waiter and that we would return. Great breakfast if you're looking for a bunch of food! We got pineapple upside-down pancakes and a linguica/scrambled eggs/hash browns/biscuits and gravy combo - bam - everything was awesome. Linguica (spicy Portuguese sausage) is a personal fave, and most places don't have it - props for that! HUGE, fluffy biscuit, OK gravy, that oddly, the biscuit made up for (never thought I'd say that) The hash browns were savory and a great crunch:soft ratio, and the eggs great as well - perfectly cooked. The pancakes, thick, filled with warm pineapple chunks, topped with syrup and whipped cream, a perfect counter to all the savory stuff. Ah, Black Bear Diner. Let's start with the fact that I am NOT in any way shape or form a "pancake" person. Never have been. The only pancakes I will consume are Black Bear's. They literally taste like fluffy vanilla cakes, and are delicious! Oh, what's that? You're a fan of homemade sausage patties? Well so am I! I always order the "spicy" sausage patties. They are flavorful and are made with delicious quality ingredients. All of their portions are sizable, and more then likely you can share, or take home leftovers. Lunch options are just as tasty as breakfast. Last but not least, they make their own ranch dressing. Which is a bonus in itself, but then they add *BACON* to it. Need I say more? read more

We went for the prime rib Saturday special. OMG ~ In a word...AMAZING‼ Heather, our server, was a doll. She answered our questions and we gave her the easiest order of the day. The salad alone could have been my dinner. Awesome 1000 Island dressing. Then came the dinner. Loaded baked potato with lots of fresh bacon. Huge helping of broccoli crowns and carrot chip. The slice of prime rib was over an inch thick and amazingly tender. We brought dessert home ~ an apple cobbler and a banana cream pie. Still full from dinner so will update on dessert. Had breakfast here on a Saturday morning 9:30 a.m. love he was full of people my party was already seated so I went right to my table. Service was a little slow but to be expected because of staff shortages since covid. But my eggs were cooked perfectly. Server very attentive. Got everything correct as ordered except one thing which was quickly corrected. Manager seemed engaged with staff and guests. Was talking with each table. Had breakfast this morning, Have no complaints about the food or service but the place was very very dirty. At least 1/4 inch of dust on window sills, blinds are covered in dust, booth seats have food remanants behind seat and the sides of booth seats have sticky substance, floor is carpet and looks as if it has not been cleaned in years. Will never go back for food that is served in that kind of environment. read more

We went today for the first time and it was DELICIOUS! We had tried eating here before but the wait was too long the both times we tried. I tried the sashta scramble wich is serve with your Choice of bread and sides. The staff was super friendly and our server was also great! I normally love Black Bear Diner. It's a good family restaurant at a decent price. But this location needs some serious help. My husband, daughter and I arrive at 8:30 on a Friday night and are seated almost immediately. The waitress takes our drink order and about five minutes later she takes our food order. Everything seems totally fine. Then we play the waiting game. Two tables who arrived after us got their meals before us. One of those tables was a party of seven. Now normally I'm not one to complain about a long wait time. Initially I thought it was just because I had ordered a ribeye and that takes a bit longer to cook. By the time we got our food it was 20 minutes till closing. The party of seven that arrived after us had already eaten their dinner and desert and left. And the worst part? My steak was two-thirds fat and gristle, my vegetables were cold and my fries were horribly over salted. So we're trying to eat as fast as possible and get out before 10pm, which is when they close. The waitress didn't bother to offer us dessert (no surprise there) and unceremoniously dropped our check on the table. I take this as a sign she wants us to leave as soon as possible so we pack our food up and go up to pay the check. The man who closed out our check is the same man I saw wandering around the dining area all night, loudly talking to his coworkers. So my husband I both got the vibe he was the person in charge at the time. He asked how everything was and we told him it was all pretty awful. The first thing he does is look at our check and inform us that we were only waiting 18 minutes. As if we have no concept of time. Then he goes into a line of excuses "we're understaffed" "This time of night we lose a lot of people" "It's a strange transition period." Not once does he apologize for the terrible service or food. Then he tries to placate us with a free pie. Finally I tell him I don't want a pie, I want the same level of service any other customer would have. I will never be returning to this location ever again. The location south of the I-10 might be a bit out of the way but at least they value their customers over there. read more

Black Bear diner is our go-to Sunday brunch place. When you're looking for a breakfast place that serves really good pancakes/ waffles/ bacon / sausage and omelette this is the place to go. Price is worth it for the size of the food you'll get. Their waffles are incredible and they always serve my sunny side up perfectly. I love their hot chocolate and my husband always enjoy their all-meat omelettes. Service is fast, some days (esp on weekends) wait could be 20-25 mins but most days you won't need to line up. The place's decoration suites the restaurant's theme and they are able to keep it clean and tidy. Always a pleasant and satisfying experience dining here. We'll def be back! read more

The restaurant itself is cute very quaint, the rustic feeling to it. That's the only thing I would give it a start for. The service was awful and the food was mediocre. Corn beef on the Reuben sandwich was dry. Had a deficit with thousand island dressing. The worst thing was the service. Sarah was a horrible server never came back to give refills until I was ready to leave. Never brought my check over. When I went to the register, they asked if I had a check I said she never brought it over to me. They charged me four dollars for a pop and I got one glass never got a refill when I was eating my food Sarah came with a refil just before I was finished. By that time I didn't want it anymore. A group of us go to dinner together a couple of times a month. So many times, it ends badly. (I'm sure it's hard to wait on 25 people all at once.). Well, Kimber at the Black Bear Diner is a Rock Star! Her jokes may have made me groan, but she got all our orders right and the kitchen kept them rolling out. Usually the worst part is getting the checks, and she did that part well, too. I had the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and vegetables, and I saw other people's chicken fried steak, pot roast, and fish n chips. Enjoyed breakfast here with my mom this morning. The place is popular so we did have a bit of a wait but I felt it was worth it as they did not pack the tables too close together, which I felt was wise. I ordered coffee to begin with and our server Kathy was excellent, friendly and attentive. The California Eggs Benedict was great. I ordered with ranch style potatoes and my mom had the hash browns. Fruit also came with the meal. I was surprised at the size of the portions which were very filling. As we finished up, we were presented with the check which you take to the register to pay. If you use a card, the machine is set to add tip in automatic increments of 10%, 15% up to 20% so you don't have to do any math nor guess at percentages. My boyfriend and I went in this morning for breakfast and it was a short wait (maybe 10/15 minutes max.) everyone here is very prompt and organized. Our server was Mia and she is SO SO sweet, she went above and beyond for all of her tables including ours, making sure we had everything we needed. (This is the third time ever coming here and this is by far the best experience I've had). I'm not sure if she normally works mornings or evenings but she'll make sure you're taken care, even got us a water and coffee to go. (I'm sure she could tell that I needed that haha). Also I really I appreciate that the plastic and paper To-Go cups are biodegradable so kudos to you Black Bear Diner. My only thing was my poached eggs were over cooked but honestly I totally get it. I work in the service industry and sometimes things get away from us. It still tasted fantastic. We all have off days and I'll sure it'll be perfect next time! I always passed by this place and never thought it will interest me until my sister wanted to come here. I like how all the decor is forest like. :) Came in, and got seated right away! They seated us but the waiter NEVER came we waited for like 30 minutes. Keep in mind we were the only Hispanic there and we were speaking Spanish. They sat another party next to us (white people) after having us wait 30 minutes and the waiter was so quick to help them but they never even took our drink order literally NOTHING we had to leave because we felt so discriminated. The food was overall good, our main issue was our server Cassandra, with our party of four we were patient and understanding that everything in the kitchen would be slower which isn't the issue. The only immediate thing she did was taking our orders, proceeds to take 10-15 minutes to bring out waters (in this Arizona heat) and for us to either have wrong food items or missing food items. I asked for sourdough bread with the original scramble and received white bread, my friend ordered the Chicken Fried Steak omelette and asked for gravy on the side and Cassandra said she heard it as no gravy and provided no apology. Once we received our food we didn't have utensils asked for them and then we asked her for that side of gravy, bacon ranch and another water that we never received and for her to 15 minutes later ask if she could take some plates off our table. We reminded her about the water and didn't bother asking for the other sides (since we're almost done with our meal) because she just disappears for more than fifteen minutes at a time even though we see her tending with the other tables just fine since they had gotten their drink refills plenty of times and see her chatting it up with them. We paid for our food at the register and told the nice woman who took our cards that the service wasn't the best and she told the manager immediately. While paying, we see Cassandra step out and give a dirty look at us, I guess because she heard the complaint being told to the manager but she didn't bother to ask why. We don't expect to get a discount or anything but we definitely did not tip her trashy unprofessional service. Typical diner food. The taste is pretty good, the prices are not too bad, but the portion sizes are Gigantic. The staff is friendly and very attentive but come for breakfast and be prepared to wait up to 30min for a seat even longer on Sundays. Favorite thing to get here is the grizz. Its a humongous lumberjack sized meal that blows away other breakfast platters. Also great is the Volcano breakfast plate. For lunch the turkey bacon avocado sandwich is delicious. Upon arrival, you are given a newspaper with Glendale news from a many years ago. Mine was a 1967 front page newspaper, inside which guests will find the menu. I really enjoyed this feel, made you feel almost like you are at your own kitchen table. Older interior but kept clean, very nice homey feel-very welcoming atmosphere. Servers are all smiles and very kind, mostly women, at least in the morning when I visited. Play oldies music in background, easy listening. Average plate price looked to be in the 7.50 to 10.00 range. Has full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. Meal came out within 5 minutes. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros Benedict for 10.49 (yes more expensive than most but sounded so good). Potatoes not as crisp as I normally like but tasted fresh which is most important. The fruit was fresh, crisp, and cool. The eggs Benedict were good, just slightly, again, not as crispy as I would prefer on the English muffin. The meal I selected had green chillies, pulled pork, and of course a poached egg. I never had this before and would probably order a bacon or sausage Benedict instead next time, simply because that is what I am used to for breakfast taste. Overall, however, a tasty meal with a drink that stayed filled. I would certainly come here again; the lunch menu looks very appealing to me with fresh sandwiches and salads. The menu has a "little less" section for seniors or people that don't swallow as much food as the average joe. Those prices are in the 6.00-7.50 range. They also have a conference room for guests with large parties. I saw some family or company meeting at 8:30am on a Thursday! I was surprised, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves.
