Although we go to a restaurant for the food, a huge part of the overall experience is the service. When you server greets you with a smile, acts like he wants to be there, checks on you without being overbearing, & engages with a positive attitude, well that sets the stage for a great visit. I have gone to this location 3 times with varying degrees of satisfaction. To start, this is really one of the only places to get a sit-down breakfast in the Laveen area, because of that, I guess that makes Black Bear Diner the best breakfast in town by default. The food is your basic American diner food that is hard to mess up, but the food here is far from perfect. The main pro that I have is that their breakfast meats here are very good. The bacon is some of the best I've ever had, while the sausage patties have the look, texture, and flavor as if it were made fresh in the back every day. The hot link was also surprisingly flavorful and was a compliment to the breakfast. I'd also like to shout out their fresh orange juice which is delicious. My wife and son love the pancakes here, while on our last visit my wife had the stuffed blackberry "French toast" which is their house made bear claw stuffed with blackberries and cooked in the traditional French toast way. She had no complaints! The biscuits which they pride themselves on are very dry and can only be saved by smothering them in gravy, otherwise they require lots of beverage to make your life enjoyable after eating. Every time I've come here, I had to ask for butter for my biscuit or toast, it didn't come with it on the side, which is something I found odd. Also, the toast and/or biscuit was never hot enough to actually melt the butter when I finally got it. The hash browns are another story. In one visit my hash browns were almost overly crispy while at the same time, my wife's were under cooked with no color to the point that she wanted to have them fried some more, but wouldn't do that due to being more work for the staff, and of course, time. The "country potatoes" were a much better option than the hash browns if I were to go again. The biggest con that I've had for this location (or maybe it's just an American diner thing?) is the vegetables in the breakfast dishes. The onions and green peppers are basically just warmed through and aren't actually fried up. They are super crunchy instead of being softer and the onions still have that "spice" in them from basically being raw instead of having a little sweetness from being fully cooked. The raw-ish vegetables also leave a little pool of water at the bottom of the plate from being under cooked. This is an issue that we've had the last 3 tines from coming here and is the biggest disappointment for me and made the breakfast less enjoyable. While writing this an hour later, I still taste the raw onion in my mouth. The service is overall pretty good, with no real complaints. If you come after 9am on a weekend, expect to wait anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. Plates range around the $12 mark and are very filling. Our family of 3 got out for under $45 (pre-tip) with everyone having had something to drink (coffee, orange juice, and milk) Long story short, while this may be the "best breakfast in the Laveen area," it is only the best due to a lack of competition. While it's not the best breakfast I've ever had, there were definitely some positives and feel it's worthwhile to visit if you're not driving from too far away. I am moving, so I will not be back to this location and will probably not be going to the Black Bear Diner close to our new place as there are better, closer options. read more

In town visiting my daughter. I've been to many BBD in the past. I went with my usual. Chicken Fry Steak with hash browns, scrambled eggs and toast. Everything was good as usual except the hash browns. These were not fresh. They were very hard and chewy. Probably the worst hash browns I've ever had. First thing I noticed was broken soap dispenser in men's room and no paper towels. Ordered food, nothing was cooked as asked for. Meat was medium rare, not medium, eggs over easy, not over medium, asked for blackened / burnt toast, got "toast" so lightly toasted it could still pass for bread. Country potatoes also undercooked with crunchy green peppers. I never send food back, that's asking for food poisoning, so I just ate what I got and no tip. Sorry, not sorry. We are a party of 7 and We arrived 9:10 and they close 10pm. The manager and server were welcoming but the cook was mad and slammed something in the kitchen to make us feel bad. I've always had great service at this location. I love how easily you can customize the order (such as swapping out sides). The food is absolutely wonderful as well. They have something for everyone. I've tried a variety of items. Some of my favorites are their turkey club, chicken fried steak, and patty melt. I also really like their burgers and breakfast items (particularly their pancakes). In times of Covid one must truly appreciate the effort it takes to maintain even a basic level of service - that is why I feel it imperative to recognize those that go further. Here is a paste from my previous Google review of this establishment: "I finally got a chance to try this brand! This is my first dine-in experience since March 2020. Customer service was friendly & responsive. I would have liked a little more attention to drink refills but overall my experience here was positive." This location is very consistent and has become on of my go-to spots. The portion size always allows me to make one meal into two. I haven't had a meal from here that I could finish in one sitting. I always get my food to-go and the process is easy and fairly quick. The food is consistently done and prepared before the pick-up time. Even to-go orders come with the food hot and fresh. By the time I get home I'm able to dig in without reheating anything. My last meal was on Christmas and I got the prime rib. It was really good and cooked to your personal wellness level. I just would like to start by saying "I love Black Bear Diner ! " However the experience we had with Fabian at this location was horrible. The location is dirty and food left on plates at tables. There were multiple tables with dirty plates and food . Fabian friends came in behind us, Fabian immediately set us down and said he would be right with us, he immediately went over to his friends and took care of them before us . He got their drinks and food and completely blew our party off. He set down another party and took care of them before us . After about 25 mins Fabian came by just to tell us hold on he needs more time . 10 mins later he stopped by to take our drink orders . It been about 10 more mins and he was able to give 3 other party's there drinks before bring ours ! It looks like Fabian is the only one working . The other lady's are just walking around pretending to be busy . Our food has been settling on the counter for 15 mins getting cold . Our drinks are empty and have been for over 10 since he has been here to check on us . Come to find out the picture is for the people that came 2 parties after us . The is ridiculous. For someone who believes is family so much he has it tattooed on his arm you would think that seeing all 6 of us out with our grand grand would had prompted him to take good care of us . He didn't. But when it came to pay the bill there was no hesitation on how quick he was there to collect the money. The manager in the green shirt only came around 1 time and I've didn't seem genuinely interested in our concerns. This has to be the worst Black Bear Diner we have ever been too ! I am extremely mad that we had to ask for anything but as soon as they brought the receipt he was there to collect our money without hesitation. My advice to management , make sure that all your staff treats everyone the same regardless of relationships. Make sure your staff maintain their professionalism . My boyfriend and I finally got to try black bear diner Thanksgiving morning! Every time we went the wait for 2 was over an hour so we would go elsewhere. For Thanksgiving morning I was pleasantly surprised that we didn't have to wait. The food was okay, the eggs and potatoes didn't really have a taste and the biscuit was so big I wasn't sure how to eat it . All in all it was a nice experience. But one thing to note, it was so cold inside with the a/c pumping through we were shaking the entire time and it was barely 60 degrees outside. We will return as we enjoyed our meals. It hurts me to say I'll never return to Black Bear diner again. I am understanding towards the changes restaurants have made in response to COVID but the lack of care and communication today from the staff was more than disappointing. I've been coming to Black Bear diner for over 7 years and was so excited when this location opened up and visited in the first week of their grand opening. For Mother's Day I made an online order for my family. Upon arrival I could see the place was packed with a ton of customers outside and waiting. The curbside pickup states to call upon arrival and an employee will come out. I called 28 times before an employee picked up. He stated they were a bit behind and would need another 20 minutes. I asked if he would still be bringing the food to the car and he stated yes. 40 minutes went by and I called again 15 times before venturing into the crowd to ask about my order. All the customers were polite as I made my way past about 20 patrons and noticed multiple orders on a large table in front of customers. I checked each tag to see if my order was there and didn't see my order number or name. I asked some of the customers if they had also completed an online order or curbside and there was a collective yes but I did not recall seeing any employees come outside of the building to deliver to cars. After waiting about 10 minutes an employee came out and I asked about how far behind they were. He stated 1 hour so whatever time the online order showed add an hour to that. Many customers grumbled that was not what they were told and had they known they would have cancelled. I asked him since I had been there about an hour already if my order was ready. He asked for my last name but he can't find it. He asked for my first name which extremely unique and a customer stated someone picked that up. Impossible The employee stated that he called the name out and someone came forward and collected the food. I asked him how that is possible as he was the individual I spoke with on the phone and asked if they were still bringing the food curbside. Why would I venture into the store with all these people if my expectation is you are bringing it to my car. I then asked if he checked their ID as it states on the site when picking up food we must show our drivers license and the card the food was purchased with for verification. He states no As he says this someone else says they forget his bacon and he grabs it out of another persons to go bag that's just sitting on the huge table exposed to all the customers Again I state the changes due to COVID have been challenging for this industry but I was very disappointed read more

One of the worst Black Bear Diner's I have ever eaten at!! The service was TERRIBLE!! Coffee served first was too strong to drink, 2nd serving it was not hot but warm. Salad was served and had to get his attention for some utensils and refills. Ordered the chicken and waffles and only got the waffle! Had to wait for the chicken while the rest of my family had their dinners. Saw my waffle on the kitchen counter and it sat there until the chicken was cooked. It was served and the waffle was cold! Waited for the check and no cashier to be found!! Again had to track down our waiter to pay the bill! We won't be eating at this place anytime soon!!! Love that they have comfort food that taste like homemade. The slow cooked pot roast was delicious. I had the pesto pasta with blackened salmon. Love the combo flavor of pesto and char of salmon cooked perfectly and was not dry. We live not too far so we usually do To Go orders. A must have when you come here is their fresh squeezed orange juice! Pricy but worth it. Wish that they would put it in a larger cup though. Black Bear Diner is one of my favorite restaurants. It's like Cacker Barrel and Olive Garden but better. It always has a quant home-y feel. There are so many options on the menu and they are all really good. The sizes are big and I often have leftovers. The corn bread is so yummy and a little bigger than a base ball. I always ask them if they are out of anything when I get there in case. It seems like the Chicken Pot pie is a favorite everywhere and is occasionally out. All of the breakfast foods are yummy. My husband and I will often share the Volcano and a corn bread. The tri-tip is also super delicious and filling. read more

Easily my best Black Bear Diner experience. My first 2 times were mediocre (they were at different locations - Mesa and Avondale). Service was good for a busy Father's day. We did wait an hour but that was expected. We got the classic Benedict and the Volcano. As always, the volcano gets you the bang for the buck for a classic American breakfast. My problems with their pancakes before were that they are not consistent in size and puffiness. This time I noticed that each dish of pancakes that passed me were voluptuously puffy. It's been disappointing in the past where I had FLAT pancakes and see other people had fluffier pancakes. For 1 it's not appealing to the eyes and 2 it's a different texture. The Classic Benedict was on point as well. Eggs were poached to the right temperature that made for the perfect burst of egg yolk. Just wished they had more options of meat for the benes. read more

This morning a server didn't hear me say good morning so he confronted me about it and said, " I said good morning and you don't say good morning back. Do you not say good morning back?" It took me aback. I responded and told him I did say good morning but he shouldn't be challenging me about it. I asked for a different server they said he isn't my server. The manager and another guy were coming up. I told him, don't ever speak to me like that again. I told the manager what happened, she apologized, I told her it's not about an apology it's about how he shouldn't speak to people like that. He's a waiter, he shouldn't be getting upset over a "good morning." What ticks me off the most is 1 this is the one morning I wasn't live streaming so I couldn't play it back, but rltwo he lied just blatantly lied and said he didn't say anything other than good morning. I said so you are denying saying anything else to me. He said again, all I said was good morning and then scurried away. I turned to the manager and asked if they had cameras, she said they did, and I told her to play it back. Body language will show he said far more than good morning. It was a busy Saturday afternoon , so about a 35 mjnute wait but not too bad. The food was good! My friend got The Grizz and alt-ed for a waffle which big and soft. I got the Chizo Breakfast Burrito which came with fruit on the side and hashbrown! Sooo filling and delicious with the bear sauces on the side. My waiter, Mateo, definitely went above and beyond. Made appealing suggestions, was upbeat and personable. Didnt even have to say anything and he brought over extra waters and after we finished our mimosas and coffee and additional requests as needed. Had the bread pudding for dessert and it was HUGE. I dont have much of a sweet tooth but had to try it, very soft and warm and just ended my experience there amazingly. read more
