Skip this place. Seriously. Let's start with the good news! The gal that greeted us and seated us was very friendly. On the flip side, the floor was dirty and wait staff were not friendly. I ordered a strawberry waffle and orange juice. The juice arrived first, and was as advertised. Then the waffle arrived. Bad. I was told there's no strawberries. Instead of letting me know ahead of time and allowing me to choose something else, I got a dry waffle and a choice of blueberries or bananas. Ordering something else wasn't even offered as an option. Just suck it up and eat what's in front of you. Our waitress was Olivia. Her idea of checking on us was to breeze by and ask if we were good. As I was going to say something, she said "OK" and moved along before I could say anything. When we were waiting on our check, She was off chatting with the other wait staff. The first couple of times I've eaten at Black Bear it was delicious, the food was hot and the service was good. The last time I went, it wasn't so good. The food was cold, the waitress acted like it was a chore to do her job and the kitchen kept multiple plates of food going to different tables underneath the heat lamps until ready to go. If I'm paying for a good hot meal, I expect it to be cooked and ready to come to my table, not warmed by the heat lamps. read more

One of the few restaurants that were open on Thanksgiving day and it was packed. Breakfast is served all day which is always a favorite. The basic breakfast items are good, not sure about their specials. Dinner entrees come with 2 sides. Prime ribs are not bad, a little over cooked but taste good. Price is affordable. So while I did not order Waffles, I did order a Patty Melt. They do not sell fries nor onion rings. They serves hash browns with every order. ‍. Also the Patty Melt was left to be desired. I got the big bear chicken fried steak and eggs with loaded potatoes. Comes with a good size portion (will be taking leftovers home). For $1.99 I would have liked a little more "loaded" on the potatoes. With a meal this size it should be packaged differently and not have everything piled on top of each other. I had never been to a Black Bear Diner before, which is surprising because it's apparently a chain, but I really enjoyed it. I ordered the meatloaf with seasonal vegetables (which was corn-on-the-cob) and Cole slaw. Their Cole slaw is amazingly good. I rarely find it that I like, but there's was spot on. The meat loaf was good and the portions are huge. I barely finished it. The atmosphere is what you would envision for a place with this name. Lots of bear motifs and general forestry. It almost looks like a place to eat in Disneyland. And the staff were extremely attentive. This is definitely a place worth repeating. They have quite a few locations, but not in Florida (sadly). Update on previous bad birthday experience review. My husband and I visited on 12/02/23 to see if service was better. We timed everything. The restaurant was a little bit busier than last time. We were seated with a few minutes of arrival. Waiter was by right away for drink order. Waitress was a few minutes later for the food order. Which was at 11:40. I ordered a breakfast special and my husband ordered the pot roast dinner. She returned shortly afterwards with his salad and cornbread muffin. By 12:13 our meals were served. Thirty-three minutes. Needed a few more food runners. Notice food sitting at the pass under the warning lights. Pancakes were on the heavy side. Over mixed and the green leaf was wilted beyond recognition. First time here. We were in the area at 11:30 and out of all the restaurants on 71st, we whipped in here. Plenty of parking. Greeted immediately and shown to a booth where we could see the open kitchen. Our waitress brought us waters and the menu. Answered our questions since the menu was pretty large and included breakfast, lunch and dinner items. I believe the waitress's name was Tyndra (?) and she was great. She even brought out a big cornbread muffin since we were first timers. We both got the roast beef lunch (which was smaller portion) and came with mashed potatoes and brown gravy. It was excellent. This was second time my family and I had a terrible experience here. After first time we decided to give them benefit of doubt but not after today. What should have been enjoyable time spent with family on Sunday morning turned in frustration and empty stomach. If they are at a half of their capacity, they start running like a chickens with their head cut off. Once again, we had to wait for our food over 40minutes. When it finally arrived, potatoes were raw, 3 of the plates did not come correctly and sides were ordered never arrived. At that point I returned plate that had raw potatoes and sat there in disbelief. You would think manager or someone would try to apologize for lack of service and terrible experience, but no, not here, they probably don't care about customer satisfaction. Previous time I asked for something to be taken out due to allergy, sure enough they did not care enough to make order as requested.
