The food here was really good. I had theSouthwest Tri-tip salad. I also liked the theming. This was my first time at a Black Bear Diner and I found it entertaining just looking around. They has stuffed animal bear sitting on one of the bar stools directly across from the booth I was sitting in. My fellow diner took almost the entire meal to realixe it so, I got a good chuckle out of that. Service was the only issue. It stated out really well with us getting asked for drink choices twice with minutes of sitting down but went downhill from there. It was busy but not near at capacity while we were there. It took a long time ot get refills of drinks even after we had asked for them and we seemed to wait a long time for our food. We ordered my salad and a club sandwich with a salad. Theres nothing finer, than stopping off at Black Bear Diner! Well maybe, but nonetheless... Solid food, great portions, quick friendly service, Guinness, Corona, and few other bottles o beer... I think I'm a fan! Like 90% of anyone else who's been here, we were headed up to Mt. Shasta, and stopped off in Willows for some fuel and a bite along the way. We had the Tri-tip dip with some fries, and the Stuffed chicken with mashed potatoes and mac n cheese. The Tri-tip itself was about what you would expect when in a diner, but the bread and au jus were pretty good! The stuffed chicken was not something I would generally order, so I cant really give a good or bad opinion on it, but it seemed ok to me. Had a hollandaise sauce atop it! I think the sides were my favorite part, the Mashed potatoes were buttery goodness, the fries were cooked just right and had decent seasoning, the mac n cheese was think and cheesy! They had some pretty awesome looking desserts, but we didn't get that far, if you have kids, take them here and let them run around and enjoy all the bear scenery! On our way home from a road trip, and we found that our stomaches were "growling" so my bf and I decided to "cave" in and eat at the Black Bear Diner. The food left a lot to be desired. Needless to say, we were "beary" disappointed. Seriously, the only good thing about this place was our server. She was really sweet and wonderful. The food was super gross. And I say this being A) not very picky, and B) having been on the road for almost a week, making me even less picky. Do not get the potato salad, unless you like weird cinnamon-y/nutmeg-y/weird unidentifiable spice in your tater salad. I got the BLAST, which was ok, but there was barely any bacon in it. BF got the chipotle bacon wrap. It looked weird and soggy and gross. I asked him how it tasted, he said "it tastes how it looks." nuff said. Pros - bathroom is super duper clean. menu is large so at least there are options. bottle of stella is cheap. staff is friendly and not gonna lie, all the cheesy bear decor kinda grows on you. Ordered the little less chicken fried steak, glad I didn't order the whole enchilada. Wow, a lot of food and no worries about enough gravy. Green beans were yummy as were the mashed potatoes. Been disappointed both times we ate at this location while visiting the area. Food was fine and service was friendly but the wait time was AWFUL. The first time it took 2-3 hours for our whole party (20 but not a busy time) to be served, which came only a few plates at a time so there were some of us who had already finished their meal by the time some of us finally got our food. Second time we gave them a heads up that we were coming (again, not a busy time) and we JUST ordered shakes--it still took over an hour for all of us to be served and again, only coming out 1-2 at a time. BBD is one of the few restaurants in this area so we were bummed at our experience :( read more

We came here for lunch since it is a good halfway point between Redding and the SF Bay Area. The service was a little slow, but not too bad. Everyone liked their food except me. I ordered the Slow-Cooked Pot Roast which was a slab of meat with mashed potatoes covered in salty gravy (tasted like it came from a can). It was not very tasty AND it was cooler than lukewarm. I was expecting better food here than Denny's, but this place seems to fall into the same category - mediocre at best. The Willows version of this Central Valley restaurant chain. I'd like to love this place. The menu looked great and the food was very good and in generous portions - once we got our plates. I ordered the Fish & Chips, and it was very good, and also a great bargain, considering the portions. The problem was that they seemed understaffed, and it took quite a while to order and then for our food to arrive. We ended up spending 1 1/2 hours here, and it wasn't even that full. We may have been there on an exceptional day, as we and many others were on the road for the solar eclipse, so they may have been overwhelmed by atypical crowds. The food was good enough we'll try it again if we pass one on the road in the future. read more

So disappointed, I shouldn't be surprised though. They really haven't been good since before the pandemic. Went in today for lunch to place a to go order since they were ignoring their phones. They were busy so when I was quoted 25 minutes I figured it may be a little longer. When I came back in 35 minutes later I see 2 of my item sitting on the counter so I figured it would be about done, I was wrong. Slowly 3 other items were added to the counter and continued to sit there for another 15 MINUTES!! After 15 minutes she bagged my items to hand them to me. I then told her I was missing an item and she gave me attitude before telling the kitchen what I needed. Another 5 minutes later I get my last item. After almost an hour I had everything I needed, now I got to go home to enjoy a very cold lunch. Really don't recommend eating here until they figure something out. read more

We went for dinner after a 10 hour drive from Oregon. Had to wait 39 minutes to be seated. Ordered the avocado toast and bacon cheeseburger. Cheeseburger seat under the light for 20 minutes before they brought it out. Burger was burnt bacon was overdone and raw how do you manage that. Ordered three times in the last week. My family wants to support this restaurant, however, I ask how many times can you call in because your to-go items are missing? Tonight 3/4 meals, we were missing a side: salad, fruit, and biscuit. Other nights same thing, missing sides, drinks or were overcharged. I've called and been placed on hold for 15 minutes (clearly forgotten about). Then hang up, try to call back, line is busy for 10-20 min. Black Bear management, I can't get you on the phone so here is my suggestion. Please start checking the orders better. It's really unfortunate such simple errors (that could easily be avoided) are happening and will prevent my Family from returning. Please do better for the sake of restaurant options in this small town. I understand you are busy, and short staffed, however, when each person is missing a side from their meal, and it KEEPS happening 3 orders, all three missing, it's frustrating. We were in there several months and had a bad experience. Food cold, not checking on us, had to ask for refills. Terrible service. I swore I'd never go back. I'm a firm believer of giving a business a second chance. Went there tonight. 4 adults and 6 children. Again, all the food was cold, CFS and chicken tender was both over cooked and cold. Kids meals were cold, forgot one of the burgers on the ticket so they rush it and it came out rare. Had to ask for a refill and that was after the food finally came out. We WILL NOT be going back. I've been in the restaurant business for years. It's not acceptable. Especially when there was maybe 3 other tables there.if no star was an option, that's what they'd get. read more

I just need to let the upper management know that "Chandler" did an excellent job for being 1 person, having to Host, Serve, Bust, and all, the only thing he was not doing was cooking ( although I think he have done a much better job). The cook had burned the buns and burned our bacon. The reason I am giving a 4 is because of Chandler. We were there on Jan 4th? 2020. He needs HELP so that people don't have to wait as long because he is outdoing his job, he needs a raise. All Black Bear Diners are the same right?....NO. That is what I thought before coming despite the poor reviews, but there were right. Super, Super, SLOW. Took 35-40 minutes for 3 out of 4 of us to get our food. I ate my breakfast and when I left to fill the truck and boat up with gas (trying to save time), the 4th meal for my son, pancakes, still had not yet arrived. How long does it take to make scrambled eggs, pancakes and bacon. That is all we ordered....nothing special. Absolutely crazy. Come to find out my parents had the exact same experience a month ago. Stopped on the way home from LA . I eat at the Redding location once in awhile and always get good , hot food . Here I ordered a cheeseburger , fries and an ice tea to go . Cheeseburger was only supposed to be cheese , ketchup and mustard cooked medium. Cheeseburger was cooked well done , way over seasoned and greasy . They also put what I believe was mayonnaise on it . It was to go and dark so I didn't realize it until I started having a allergic reaction halfway through the cheeseburger . Had to stop on side of the highway and get out my epie pen just in case . On top of that the fries were cold , not even room temperature. Never got my ice tea . I will be marking that Black Bear off my list of places to stop . Two Black Bear Dinners on my trip and both a waste of twenty dollars for crap food . I suggest the owners should train their cooks better and have some kind of quality control . The Redding , Mt Shasta and Paradise locations always have descent food . No excuse for for bad food especially when it's not busy . We went in for a early dinner there where several things wrong that we noticed. 1. The owner was cleaning the shelves, when he was done he started to move dishes to the counter for the kitchen with out washing his hands. 2. He then was moving the to go boxes puting is fingers in the boxes. 3. All of this with out wearing a mask, when we bought it to his attention he became very rude told us it was his right not to wear one and if we didn't want to catch the virus we should stay home. Even though there have been 25 patrons and 1 cook & 1 waitress at that time, we were greeted, had good, hot food served. I really appreciated the warm welcome from the waitress upon our entrance. We sat at a booth and ordered breakfast. It took a while to get our meal, but we came in pretty early and it looked like there was just one cook, so that's understandable. The portions are definitely huge and the food is pretty good. I enjoyed my eggs Benedict, however the country potatoes lacked flavor; I wish they had been chopped a little smaller (so they were cooked better) and seasoned a little. I stopped there on 5/9/22 there was 5 of us I ordered the Turkey club it was SUPPOSED to have mayo lettuce tomatoes smoked ham turkey breast cheese and bacon. I ordered NO MAYO they brought out the food my sammie had mayo sent it back got it back the sammie had 1 piece of smoked ham 1/2 in wide by 2 in long for the whole sammie the turkey breast had 2 slices of turkey 1 inch long and 2 inches wide!! My daughters sandwich chicken avocado club was just as bad the chicken breast was not sliced and very dry!! Told the waitress and she was unconcerned with our complaints and did not refund or discount any of the bill. The bill totaled $93.03 for 3 sammies and 2 burgers was NOT worth the price!! read more

I am compelled to write simply because I never thought I would give the time of day to a franchise diner type establishment. But the fact that this place turned out to be such a total surprise leads me to share. I don't know what my wife and I were expecting, but we didn't expect such friendly, fast, easy going service, reasonable pricing, large portions and a very decent and varied menu. Above all of that, the food was good, indeed better than good. While traveling with our kiddo's we do our best to avoid fast food, and try "local cuisine". This doesn't always work out. But we try. In Willow's, at least at this particular highway exit, the local cuisine was either Burger King, Denny's or Black Bear Diner. I had noticed other Black Bear Diners and billboards about our highway travels, so we opted for it, with low expectations. Close your eyes and think diner menu - okay got it ? - well, that's what they have. Everything from the burger, french dip, meatloaf and pot roast, soup and salad. I had the Cobb and it was excellent. Super Bonus Alert - Ice Cream sundae prepared at your table with any kids meal. So they had our group easy. The place was clean, all the employees were very pleasant, The potty was spotless, more importantly, the food was good, as was the value. I have eaten at three Black Bear Diners in the last year, Redding, CA not to fond of dirty, Mount Shasta the original Black Bear well not original after the remodel, but they are good,waitress's very friendly, The best Black Bear Diner is in Willows, California. I stopped there as a friend took me shopping at the Walmart in Willows, the staff at Black Bear is a absolute joy. The Dessert case is so appealing and I never pass it up. I was greeted with a smile and seated by Stephanie, going by what her name tag read, along with her great service and the staff makes it always a pleasure to stop in. The French Dip is one of my favorites with Banana creme pie to go, unfortunately it was sold out, next time. Early bird always gets the best.
