I am mainly giving 5 starts because of the good folks that work here!!! A great restaurant depends on the people working there!!! Specifically the breakfast shifts. Servers and cooks, and even the local guy that's there every morning. Even though black bear was was under staffed for max capacity, the servers and cooks displayed a high capacity skill set that really impressed me. It's interesting what restaurants you end up at when traveling across the country when looking for food. Black Bear Diner is one of those examples. I had never heard of them before even though there is apparently locations all over Southern California, but after a long day of driving, we chose to dine here. I'll start with the food, my club sandwich was good. It was enormous which often happens when ordering one so my wife and I pre-emptively shared that and we got 1/2 regular fries and I got sweet potato fries since I don't like regular fries. The sweet potato fries weren't very good. A little too mushy. The diner was kinda run down and in desperate need of some updating. I guess that's my main complaint about it. Not sure how well the chain as a whole is doing, but if it's doing well, it's time to update this location. The service was alright. I didn't think our server was particularly friendly and often wasn't very helpful. We had to wait quite awhile for the check. Then pay at the cash register like all diners. Went to Black Bear Diner with my little family hoping for a good time. Right when we were seated I noticed we were segregated from all the White folks. All Whites were seated on the right side of the restaurant, and we were seated on the left side (there's been history of racism in this county). Every new customer who came in after us were White and seated on the right. On our side of the restaurant an employee was on break or waiting for her shift, and eating as well. She was FaceTiming obnoxiously loud with her 6 year old daughter on blast (yes, we even heard how old she is). Waitress looked like she didn't even want to serve us. Food was horrible. Yes, huge portions, but it was wasteful. Steak was over cooked,ultra dry, and bland (literally asked for "rare"). Green beans are straight from the can, no kidding! Just overall disgusting food. Every few years I forget how bad Black Bear Diner is so I stop in for breakfast. The strawberry waffle was just a crunchy dried out waffle buried in whipped cream with a few half raw strawberries dumped on top. The omelet was even worse. Really disappointed after coming here for the last 10 years. Seated at 10:30am hostess proceeds to set our table by placing the flatware on the table using her thumb and index finger over the part you place in your mouth, I can overlook that. We're Seated for 15 minutes before anyone comes to the table, we have 2 small children so the server brings coloring pages with the menus then informs us they're out of crayons...what was the point? The last words from our server "let me get this order in and I'll be back with some coffee" and that's the last we ever saw of her we waited 30 additional minutes, no food no coffee, kids staring at coloring pages and I glance across the dining room and our server is sitting, yes sitting in a booth with customers. I love eating at Diners. Black Bear is the ultimate diner. They have great food, (shout out to the Chefs). The staff is always courteous and often check on you throughout your meal. Not one person acknowledged us, stopped by to take our drink order or even said "hello, we'll be right with you. " After 30 minutes of being ignored we left. I generally like Black Bear diner for a my diner comfort moods like a replacement for Denny's level food. It's a step above that for sure in the same class but with higher prices and ridiculously large portions. I'd say reduce the portions and lower the price but I know how people get bent about portion size. At least here you've always got leftovers for lunch or breakfast. Service is amazing!!! From the amicable hostess that seated us, the food runner, and our server Travis who was so attentive and helpful with my questions. We've been to a few Black Bears in different locations over the years. This was our first time at the Yreka location as we've been disappointed with other restaurants here. (We travel frequently from Northern Washington state to Southern California) My husband loves their comfort food. I prefer a lighter fare which is fine - I usually order a salad and enjoy a glass of wine. Side Salad needs a few more acompinents such as onions, croutons, cheese. We are Black Bear fans but there have been times where consistency does not run location to location. This is NOT one of those times! We were greeted right away and taken to our seat. Drink order was quick. Great, friendly server took our order when we were ready-no waiting or hunting her down. We could here other employees greeting regulars which was good to hear. The burger ordered was cooked perfectly and the "little less" portion of pot roast accompanied by mashed potatoes and gravy was just right. The pot roast was a melt in your mouth recipe. Yum! The black bear staff were friendly and quick. We wanted a quick dinner during our stay at the Baymont hotel just behind it. Portions are HUGE (and greasy)! I was shocked to find almost all meat options for dinner and lunch, but breakfast, lunch and dinner is served all day. I'm a pescatarian who has been spoiled with tons of options veggie and pescatarian options in Seattle. Vegetarian options are just salads and all the main dishes are more like chicken fried steaks, meatloaf and other comfort food. I was secretly hoping for some sort of dumplings, noodle soup or a mac and cheese meal but when I found none, I went for the Tuna Melt with potato salad, my partner got the chicken friend steak and couldn't eat it all! Entrance, was welcoming and decorated beautifully for fall. Establishment was clean, and extremely busy for a Thursday night. Our waitress was a little slower then I would have liked. We actually had to ask for our drink orders to be taken. We had to told the hostess we waited 15 minutes for drinks orders, (only due to the fact we saw other people that had just been seated with their drinks already) prior to us even putting our drink order in. While asking if we could order dinks the hostess said we'll... what do you want to drink then!! Which if you ask me was inappropriate, and she needs to be shadowed, and observed by the manager to find an new way to help with her customer service skills, and pointers on how she can improve. After we received your drinks the waitress then came and took our dinner order. The food was delicious and the back kitchen really makes this establishments money, good job kitchen staff. After our meal the waitress then forgot the box we had an asked for, but handed us our check. We had to ask a nice bus boy for a box which he got immediately. Thus my Yelp review is high for the food, and portions, and location. But some of the servers (hostess) need a few pointers on customer service, and attentiveness. I've been surprised to read some of the critical reviews here...when on the road from Seattle to California, I've eaten at this particular Black Bear Diner five or six times, and have loved it ever time. Egg dishes, big biscuits, etc, all top notch. and great Creamy Grits which I love...but...the last time I was there (Feb 2022) they did not have grits that day...I told the great server, Pam, that I'd been thinking about those grits ever since I'd left Seattle a couple days before. Pam was very apologetic and offered to sub a bowl of steel cut oatmeal to eat with my eggs and biscuit...wow, i would say it was the best oatmeal I've had since I was a kid and in the future I might actually order the oatmeal AND the grits. They are not taking COVID seriously at this location. Of the five servers I observed, only one was wearing her mask properly. Our server wore her mask beneath both her nose and mouth for the duration of our visit, all while constantly chatting and laughing loudly. I observed a couple of others being equally careless with their masks. Another was wearing a face shield that was barely large enough to cover her nose and mouth. It was a joke and protected neither her nor the customers. I didn't feel safe and I have been waiting for my first symptoms to appear ever since I left. I will not be going to any Black Bear unless I can be assured that they are being more diligent about observing their own published guidelines. We stopped at Black Bear on our way to San Francisco and I wish we hadn't. First, they didn't see us waiting to be seated! After 15 minutes of waiting, I finally got a staff's attention who said "sorry, looks like she didn't see you!" Then we sat at the table for another 15 minutes without even being offered something to drink. My 4 yo daughter was so thirsty and I couldn't find her... finally she showed up with a tray of drinks, only it was for the people seated next to us and had just arrived.
