Personally I love Black Bear Diner. Just the fact that it started locally and spread to so many locations in the US is neat. The food, portion size, cost, speed of service, and cleanliness in our local Black Bear is always awesome. The options on their menu is huge, and you can always get breakfast! Best chocolate pie ever!!!! Wish they would have warned me that there is bacon in the home fries. I'm not sure "chocolate pie" is the name of it, but it's the best I've ever had and I've had lots. I usually never eat dairy, but this pie was calling my name while I ordered my breakfast to go. Therefore, the only way this pie could have been any better for me is of it were vegan. I know, I know! A lot of people will think it's blasphemous I even mention this, but there are some darn good vegan desserts these days; such as "Peace Pies" in San Diego, for example. The breakfast was also very good. I had the vegetarian omelette (I ordered mine without cheese) with home fries, their homemade salsa and a biscuit. It was all good EXCEPT, there is bacon in the home fries. I assumed since I was ordering the vegetation omelette they would know I wouldn't want meat in anything, but that's what happens when assuming. I'm not super agro about meat touching my vegetarian food, but I really never eat pork and so I was a bit let down that I had to pick out all the bacon bits. If it weren't for this detail I would give 5 stars (I wish 4.5 was possible) Otherwise, I had a great experience here! Living in 2 states I drive by this on my many trips from CA to WA. This place has been a must check out on my list for awhile. And it was well worth the stop. We were greeted, seated and helped quickly despite it being busy. It seems they have this placed staffed really well for the amount of tables they have. Everyone we encountered was friendly and welcoming. I wish I could remember our waitress name so I could give her kudos. It didnt feel like ordering at a restaurant but more a friend asking of you wanted to try whatever they threw on the stove that day. A very good atmosphere. The service here alone nets 5 stars but the food is actually on point. The helpings are large and well worth the costs. The fish and chips were some of the best Ive ever had and the scrambled eggs we done perfectly. Not too wet and not over done but the kind that you'd want to eat every morning. Probably the only downside was the fruit didn't seem as fresh but a very small downside to a great meal. The menu was like an old newspaper and the bathrooms had a nice touch (see pics I posted). With the COVID pandemic, you would think a restaurant would want to take pride in their food to keep their doors open! How hard is it to make a burger presentable the way a customer ordered. I ordered a bobs big burger deluxe, bacon CRUNCHY. When I received it to go and got home. The bacon wasn't cook all the way, bun was soggy like the just threw everything on it, fries were cold and old. I wish i had taken a picture to Post. If I had received my food like this in the restaurant i would have asked to peak to management. Simply the best alternative on any California road trip. They have 57 locations in the west. BBD offers very good meals at great values. The night that we dined at Black Bear, there were many firefighters in town preparing for fires in NorCal and Southern Oregon, and this place was completely overwhelmed. In terms of Black Bear, well, it was a Black Bear. It's not much different than other BBD's in Oregon and Nevada. However, this place needs much more help. The staff had to stop taking orders several times while I was there because of the firefighters in the back room. Apparently, the firefighting companies contract with Black Bear, but no one bothered telling the staff. Personally, I would have closed the place down to everyone else and focused on feeding firefighters versus making everyone else wait. read more

Stopped in on our way home from visiting my grandma in Grants Pass. Very clean, welcoming atmosphere. Our server, Kris was absolutely amazing! Very attentive and sweet. I've gotta hand it to Joel who appeared to be the manager for trying to wrangle all the employees and keep a professional atmosphere. I sat at the bar and got to hear all about the drama of the restaurant. The back of the house didn't seem to acknowledge that there is a giant window in front of them where customers can hear what they're saying, and watch them work. I get that cooks are not in customer service, but I got to hear plenty of cussing and talk of doing drugs. In the course of my breakfast I saw at least 7 or 8 orders get screwed up. Missing toast, wrong meats, powdered sugar on special orders requesting none. Servers weren't checking tickets before running food, and food sat in the window for much longer than necessary. The food itself was okay, but the bacon was overdone and the potatoes were dry. The whole meal was really overshadowed by a cook staff that was wholly unprofessional. Don't sit at the counter and you might have a better experience, but I would pass on this Black Bear location until the staff gets their acts together. read more

We have given this location several chances since Covid has slowed down and restrictions have lessened. Maybe it's under new management but it has gone way down hill. The food was good but portions have gotten smaller while the prices have gone up. Typical of most places and understandable. The service was good but I was not impressed with the server's "uniforms". Very unprofessional. There was a dirty towel draped on the partition behind my husband's head. There were cleaning supplies sitting under the sink in the women's restroom out in the open. The floors were dirty and there were several flies in the restaurant. They were prepping food on the counter. We probably will not return for a while. Hopefully they get things straightened out. I'd never heard of Black Bear Diner until my parents and I began driving from LA to Portland. Once we got past Fresno there seemed to be a Black Bear Diner every 15 miles. So, when we stopped in Yreka for the night we were pleasantly surprised to see BBD. I got the small club sandwich and it was alright, nothing life changing but still satisfying. My mom had the tri tip and my dad had fried chicken. Everything was satisfying, flavorful, and HOT (in temperature). Since it was my Mom's birthday we got a free dessert (register on their site). We chose the banana cream pie and it was HUGE. It was enough for all 3 of us with some left over. woooweee! It was crowded at dinner so we got stuck in a side room... away from everyone else. The waitress came by occasionally but I had to repeatedly ask for water. Overall, it was a good experience. What a mess. Ordered a cheddar and bacon burger with garlic fries, burger was good, small amount of fries, but decent. Second order, a meat lover's omelette with hash browns and a biscuit with a side of gravy. The order was for takeout. First round, no silverware given. Went back. Second time, no hash browns given with omelette, go back again, the hostess (Trinity) informs the cook to which he replies they don't come with the meal and I have to pay for them. Maybe he should check the menu as it clearly states they come with the meal. No offers to help in any way or make it right. Trinity had to ring it in and then she told me she wouldn't make me pay for it, which is why I'm not giving a one star review as the hash browns I was given were the smallest portion size ever, just not cool. Came to this restaurant while traveling and I ordered Chicken Fried Steak, when my meal was brought to me I could see that it was a bit over cooked but tried to eat it anyway as we were pressed for time. Well I had a few bites but it was just so hard to chew. Ask for the manager and our server Rylie said she was, so I proceeded to show (even though it was obvious) and she offered to get me a new one. I explained we didn't have the time. Because I had eaten a portion of the potatoes and few bites of meat I felt I should pay something for my meal. They took 10% off, REALLY!!! ( 50% would have been more like it since it was obvious I hadn't eaten much). This meal should never have been brought to the table. I arrived to black bear diner with really no idea of what to expect. I quickly noticed the detail they put into their news paper menu which was wonderful. I was quickly overwhelmed with all there offerings. I decided to order the chicken and waffles and let me tell you this is a bold statement coming from a black man lol, but it was by far the best chicken and waffles I have ever had. The batter was made with sweet cream waffle mix good lord each bite melted in my mount it was so rich and creamy and crunchy the best waffle I've ever had without a doubt. The chicken that I had was fried to perfection and could taste that it was freshly breaded. I LOVE coming to the Black Bear Diner, no matter what city it is! They give you A LOT of food for your money and prices are very fair. The food tastes great! We only eat there for breakfast and lunch, so we don't really deal with the music, or the noisy kids that a few other reviewers have been talking about. Because of the time of day, our experience was calm, quiet and very enjoyable. The staff was friendly. I've eaten here twice in the past month. I uploaded some photos of my meals, and pictures of the inside of the building. The first time, I had the chicken-fried steak and eggs (I chose over-easy eggs). But instead of potatoes, toast or biscuits-- I asked them for a bowl of fruit, which they were happy to bring to me. And some iced tea, with no sugar. I just sweetened it with the Splenda provided at our table. The second time, I had the Tri-Tip Scramble. Basically scrambled eggs with white cheese and try-tip steak in it. Again, instead of potatoes or break, I asked for a fruit bowl. For those of you who do like toast, they also keep a supply of jam/jelly packets at the table, both with and without added sugar. They also keep ketchup, mustard and steak sauce at the table. I feel very comfortable eating here, so I will continue to do so :) read more

We stopped here for breakfast a couple of weeks ago. Service was great and menu selections adequate. I ordered an omelet, and my wife ordered the multi-grain pancakes. The portions were more than ample. However, the cooks must have been in a hurry because the food not quite done. My wife's pancakes were gooey in the middle even though nicely browned over all. My omelet had unmelted cheese inside and certainly could have used a bit more time on the grill. We've been disappointed in Black Bear Diner before so this will be our last stop there. Our other breakfast stop on our many trips to Oregon is the Hi-Lo Cafe in Weed. We've always be impressed with breakfast there, so I'd recommend Hi-Lo Cafe for your breakfast stop over Black Bear Diner. read more

It's not supposed to be a 5 star restaurant it's supposed to be an alternative to the huge chains like Denny's and Sherry's and does an darn good job of it! Went to eat a late lunch with my mom after a fairly substantial drive. Came in, got seated right away. We were both very hungry and it is usually a great place with great service and really good food. Took a bit for the waitress to get to us we ordered our food and waited. Waitress brings in the food nearly tossing it on the table with a loud whack and promptly turned and walked off. Other table I'm assuming locals cause she spoke frequently with them wouldn't talk to us and she would avoid coming to our table. We were polite when we asked for ANYTHING we would say please and thank you no replies from the waitress meal was supposed to come with a roll or cornbread (which we didn't receive) when I asked the waitress about it her reply was ," Oh I forgot"... No apology and she said her reply as she was walking away from our table didn't have the courtesy to face us. My meal was finished my mother's was nearly done. Never seen her to get the check by the time we were finished eating. Paid my bill inform the cashier of what had happened again nothing said.. As I was heading out I hear an overemphasized SIGH... Husband and I stopped here for dinner last week on the way to Eugene, Oregon. Friendly staff, obviously a place enjoyed and frequented by locals. Our server, Cassie, was terrific: friendly, professional, fast. We both had the grilled Cajun salmon dinner with vegetables, which was very good (and not spicy at all despite the name). It was an 8-ounce (half pound!) piece of salmon, and while it surely was not fresh-caught, it was moist and tasty.
