Only gets 2 stars because of the polite service we received from our server. The food was terrible. I ordered a New York strip medium rare with mashed potatoes. My wife ordered the filet with baked potato. Both steaks were well, comical. Very cheap cuts of meat. My steak was cooked medium to medium well. Both steaks were not seasoned in any way and tasted like they had been broiled in an oven. I have had better steak at Waffle House. With appetizer, 2 drinks and the steaks our bill was $80. First let me say that I have never reviewed on here before. However, we relied a lot on reviews for our recent vacation and I wanted others to be able to have some reliable feedback as well. Big Canoe is a beautiful destination. Unfortunately, Black Bear Pub left us disappointed, hungry and frankly just flat out grossed out. We arrived and were told to seat our selves because we wanted to sit on the patio. No problem. ( The patio had beautiful views from every seat, but there were uncleared tables and droppings on the floor the entire time we were there) once we seated ourselves, we waited for ten minutes to get acknowledged by a server. While our server was sweet, she was not at all knowledgeable about the menu. I asked her several questions to which she answered 'that's a good question', but couldn't tell me. We settled on the crab cakes for appetizer and beef bourguignon, 1/2 chicken, chicken tenders/chips and a kids cheeseburger with chips dinner for our family of four. The crab cakes were average at best. Two small cakes about the size and flatness of a breakfast sausage patty...for $12.50. They didn't take long to get but were served to us without appetizer plates or utensils. The server was supposed to bring them back, but after 7 min I got up to seek them out myself. Of course the crab cakes were cold by the time they got eaten. When our dinners arrived the food looked fairly good. Looks can be deceiving. My husbands chicken was extremely dry, his sweet potato fries over cooked and his 'grilled' vegetables soggy. My youngest child's cheeseburger came as an adult portion with all the toppings, despite the fact that we specified it should be plain. My oldest child who is a tender and especially a chip freak, said they both tasted really strange. The chips were very greasy and tasted like fried fish when I tried them myself. Now let me tell you about my dish...the beef bourguignon...it was to be slow cooked beef in a wine reduction served over mashed potatoes in a puff pastry shell. When it arrived it looked like a bowl of day old stew. I gave it a try, dug to the bottom expecting to come up with come nice flaky crust and instead came up with what can only be described as sloppy paper machete. The whole thing was like that. Like they have made it hours beforehand and it just sat there soaking in all the sauce getting soggy and pasty before serving it. Gross. So gross. I would say we ended up eating about 1/4 of the food that was served to us before we gave up paid the bill ($140 with tip) and left. They might be nicer to locals...I really couldn't tell, but the quality of their food was just awful. I would not recommend the Black Bear Pub to anyone. Not even locals. A read more

I was in town for my cousin's wedding and some family members went out to grab lunch at the pub. I will say the view from the pub was spectacular, however the food was ok and the service was abysmal. It would take over 20 minutes to get refills on our drinks. One family member had to send back his order twice because it was completely wrong both times. The waitress was unapologetic the entire time. My uncle made a lighthearted comment about how there were no lemons in the iced tea and the brunette waitress was incredibly rude to him and abrupt every time she spoke to us. I noticed every time she turned her back to our party, she was constantly dropping the F word and giving a ton of attitude. For a venue that hosts weddings and families constantly, you would expect the servers to be used to waiting on large groups. We felt like more of an inconvenience to her to be there despite the fact that our group was one of her only tables there. The food was pretty average. Nothing great but not super gross either. The nachos tasted really starchy and the flavor was lacking. Overall, you're better off going somewhere cheaper for better food- and honestly, the staff at the gas station down the road would give you better quality service. read more

I eat there at least once a week and since the change in management, I have been extremely pleased. It took some time for the chefs who are trained more for catering to get the hang of menu cooking but by George I think he got it! Shrimp Scampi is delicious (I would prefer the shrimp without tails but that is a personal preference), the shrimp are huge and great quality! I also love the Empanados (homemade), the French Dip when a special and everyone loves the Fish and Chips! Onion Rings are superb! And the best thing ever is the Sunday Brunch! Visited Black Bear Pub on a recent visit to Big Canoe due to pure convenience. The restaurant is located inside Big Canoe and since we were unfamiliar with the area and needed to be at a certain place at a certain time we felt this was a safe bet. The restaurant is adjacent to the golf club house. It has some nice views to the beauty that Big Canoe is. We sat by the bar area, which had TV's with Saturday football games on. The menu was varied, I think everyone can find something to enjoy. Service was ok, nothing spectacular but friendly. Food quality was ok as well. I had the Philly cheese steak sandwich and it was ok. My sister had the ahi tuna salad. I've never seen such paper thin slices of tuna. I think that was kind of disappointing for tuna lovers. Also, I was able to try some local brews. That's always a plus. Overall an ok location for lunch. read more

I would give this place 3.5 stars. I went here 3 times while visiting Big Canoe. This place was pretty good but the 3 times was more because of the lack of eating options in Big Canoe rather than how good this place was. 1st meal- I had the burger. It was a pretty average burger. 2nd meal- Spinach salad, add chicken, and pomegranate vinaigrette was a good salad. 3rd meal- Ribs and substituted fries for green beans. Surprisingly very good ribs and green beans were very good as well. Best of the 3 meals I had. I went there for lunch all 3 times. Dinner menu seemed to have better options. Service was average. Food the view was amazing. My steak was undercooked and my wife's pad Thai noodles were also undercooked. The other food was good. Also the waiter didn't come to ask if the food was ok, maybe it was a bit busy. They did correct the issue and were courteous about it. read more

Great view but be sure to make a reservation for a table next to a window. They have live music some nights and the service is good. The angus burger was great ( I love a grilled bun) an everything else was ok but nothing to write home about. Portions are generous but so are the prices for the food. read more

While vacationing at Big Canoe, my husband and I decided to try out the pub. What a delicious surprise! The dishes are fresh and delicious! I was especially in love with their creamed corn side. My wife and I just returned from Big Canoe for a weekend getaway. The resort it's self is incredible, we enjoyed the condo we stayed in and had an incredible experience at the marina. We ate at the Black Bear Pub out of convenience, it was our first time in the area and we were not familiar with the surrounding towns and figured that the Black Bear Pub was a safe choice. Over the two days we had three meals there- lunch, dinner, and breakfast in that order. Lunch on the first day was the best meal (Chicken wings, beer battered mushrooms, and a chicken salad). Dinner- seafood "buffet"was probably the worst, and the brunch buffet was under whelming. Overall I would say that bar food such as wings and burgers are the best choice when dining at the Pub. My suggestion would be to bring your own food when visiting Big Canoe; if you don't feel like cooking Jasper which is 10 miles away has some decent chain restaurants. Another alternative in Big Canoe is Duffy's which is next the the Golf Cart stand. Also remember that food and drinks are served at the pool in the fitness center. I would have to say that the two best meals we had "inside the gates"were from the pool concession stand and Duffy's. Don't get me wrong, the staff was friendly and they tried, this place has great views and the potential to be an awesome restaurant but the quality of the food is sub par. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. We left after waiting 2 hours for food. When I approached the general manager he was extremely rude and unapologetic. Servers tried, but were so understaffed and far behind that there was not much they could do. Awful, awful experience. read more

Black Bear is the pub that is adjacent to the restaurant at Big Canoe's clubhouse - Mountain's Grill. They recently expanded and renovated the pub and are going to put a permanent cover over the outside verandah area. I believe that they will also be adding an outdoor fireplace - fabulous! I've enjoyed several meals at Black Bear in the past several months - the service has been very good (special thank you to Alpha, the dining manager - super good guy). A word of caution - Big Canoe does not have many restaurants in and around it so if you are going to dine at a peak hour, be prepared for a very busy staff. We tend to go during off hours for this exact reason. The view is terrific and they have music periodically as well. Good wine pours too :-) read more
