We've been spending a lot of time in the Absecon area so far this year and have been trying some local hangouts. So far, this is the most interesting one. Let me start by saying that the Black Cat definitely has what you could call..."character". As soon as you walk in, you're immediately "Hun", "Babe" or "Dear" by the staff. I mean what the hell, it's 1145am on a weekday and the large bar area is 2/3 full of people on their 2nd round and you've got some modern country blaring on the juke box. It's an F-ing trip. The menu here is basic but it's large. Everything from some all-day breakfast favorites, Italian, pizza, fried seafood, sandwiches, salad, soups, wings, etc. Lack of choices is not a problem. Cheesesteak and Hot Open-Faced Turkey The food is the food. It's not going to wow you with Michelin star prowess but if you're coming here, you shouldn't be expecting that either. It's simple salt of the earth favorites served up quick and easy. Everything we ordered hit the table in about ten minutes and it was as expected, good. Apparently, they also regularly do special events here like Car Cruises, Bingo, Trivia & Live Music. Nice. Overall places like this are a throwback to another era. This is where your parents and grandparents went for a Saturday night highball or to get tanked after a good night at the tables or maybe a tough shift working the tables. No BS or pretentious food served up fast and fresh. Good Enough.

The best pizza around! No one seems to think of black cat when it comes to pizza but trust me.. try it!! The perfect south Jersey pizza pie. The tomato sauce is like your mom made it and it is the perfect amount of cheese versus sauce. Dough is delicious! Highly recommend. The pizza is a bit oily but dap it with a paper towel and it's perfect. They were out of wings so we got the chicken tenders for the first time and they were great. White meat and lightly breaded. They were served with carrots celery and blue cheese. Employees are so friendly and attentive. We always call ahead and order pick up. It is quick and there's lots of parking next to the restaurant.

Cool cat on roof catches your eye when driving by!

We'd driven by several times and commented we should stop and take a photo since we are cat lovers. There is a huge black cat sign on the roof. We finally decided to stop in and give it a try. Nice atmosphere, warm wood interior. Bar was not crowded at all, therefore not rowdy. Comfortable booth by window. Menu is not huge, no real fancy foods, but still a good menu, great for casual dining out. I ordered the Philly cheese steak wrap with fries and it was quite good. My friend ordered fish and chips and was very pleased. Prices are very reasonable. We'll definitely be stopping in again when we are in the area.

Their fried appetizer combo! Probably cooked in year-old grease, because the little that we ate all tasted the same!

And the award goes to...THE BLACK CAT BAR & GRILL for serving the greasiest, brown plate of inedible food in NJ! I regret that it's taken me a couple of weeks to write a review, partly because if I had done it sooner, I might have saved some people from going there! Their fried appetizer mess was disgusting...plain and simple. Our server was nice, but was unable to provide a fly swatter or newspaper that we could've fended off the fly that didn't care that the "food" he was trying to taste was really something that should've attracted flies! Please...please...go elsewhere! We visited at the end of August 2023.

I'm appalled. I spent time in the slammer and the slop they served me there was way better than the caccitorie. I've been 6 years sober and and this food made me indulge in some xanax and wine on this night. My name is Kevin Fitzhenry

When it was first advertised on Instagram, my friend made a reservation. However, when we arrived the staff were confused and overwhelmed by the big turnout and made no effort to assist us promptly. They sat us inside since the patio tables were already taken, and we waited 15-20 minutes for someone to take our order. The ambiance was casual and the noise level was very loud. They have a bar on the main level and the place just looks like a casual pizza joint. The patio seats looked more appealing and I found out after we left that they were doing a giveaway which we weren't included in. The girl dinner menu options were very basic with no meat or seafood options. I probably should've ordered off of the regular menu. I started out with an espresso martini which was okay, not the best and not the worst. Next I had a Caesar salad that was drowning in dressing that was too creamy and rich for me. The cheese pizza had a nice dough but the marinara and cheese were below average. I've had better pizza from a gas station, but I was starving since I'd already been there for 45 minutes. My friend only ate one slice of hers. I suppose we got what we paid for since it was only $25 per person. By the time we got our checks and were ready to go check out the book store, there were very few options left. If it weren't for the great company and the chance to check out Austen's Shelf, this night would've been very disappointing.

When the staff came by to see how the food was, we commented that we received too much pasta, when we asked for not much, the waiter & supervisor said nothing & walked away. When you have too much padta, it soaks up all the garlic & oil sauce, which is exactly the case here. No sauce, dry pasta and little flavor. Chopped clams in the pasta..not worth $73. Since we are talking about five years since my last review I am guessing the "leave them alone so that they can talk" philosophy of restaurant service is an institutional policy. Frankly, the service was better than the 2017 review but please we should not have to leave the table and walk into another area of the restaurant to find our server to ask to have our water glasses refilled. And, the kid from the land of the dead whom I at first thought was a customer lost attempting to find his parents was actually an employee. Someone at my table suggested I ask him for a refill of the water as he slowly walked by in a half stupor but I said "If he worked here he'd at least remove the completed soup bowls from our table (They remained until the entire meal was finished.)." I discovered later when he returned to clean a table top that he actually was an employee who might have been trained to notice diners in need of water or he could have actually said "Good evening, I have noticed your water glasses have nothing in them ... might I refill them for you?" But, then again perhaps its institutional policy. Having gotten that out of the way I have to say I was very impressed by the new entranceway, which replaced the old wooden railings that I remember front he splinters in my hand. It is a very attractive entrance and as always, noted in my prior review, you are greeted warmly and feel very welcome as you walk into this very attractive restaurant. The menu has changed since we were last here. We all agreed that it appears to have been reduced in offerings and in variety but that did not stop us from finding something. Clearly when you see the four stars and if you have reached this point of the review you have noted negatives but yet 4 stars. The food is delicious and well conceived! We didn't get anything extravagant but the French Onion Soup was truly special both visually and more importantly its blend of flavors along with the nice presence of perfectly cooked onions made those who ordered the soup very happy campers (Ok,, that's a phrase ... we are not camping out in the winter.). The sandwich was accompanied by some of the best "chips" we have ever had (All too often restaurants in their attempt to save money rather than offering French fries created chips that are burnt, overly salted or otherwise inedible.) and we all were reaching over to make sure not a speck was left. I ordered the Sweet Chili Signature Chicken Salad (Romanelli's has always been known for their awesome salads!), which was perfect for me but .... If you don't like Asian-style chili garlic sauce be forewarned that this salad's going to do more than tingle your tongue ... you are going to need water to cool it down and you already read about the lack of water refills. The chicken was perfectly cooked ... the croutons had me searching for more, and the blend of flavors made this a fantastic filling meal but .... As we left and I talked about the "heat" of my salad someone asked "Where was the bread or the rolls with dinner?" Where indeed was the bread basket that one used to receive as a guest at Romanelli's? Yes, COVID and increased costs have forced restaurants to save dollars wherever they could but we had folks with soup and me with a salad so a small dinner roll or a nice piece of bread would have been perfect but alas no bread. The menu features all those fabulous omelettes that make Romanelli's a great stop for breakfast (I wonder if you get toast or coffee refills.)! And, I am sure we will be back but next time I might ask that the water pitcher be left on the table when ordering so that the server will realize that many people need more than one glass of water with their meal especially if the water is their choice of beverage for the evening, afternoon, or morning.

Either you have blackening seasoning or you don't. Please don't create your own for me. I would of passed and got grilled. I ask the server because as someone who served for 20 years I know you know the food better than anyone!! Be honest, its okay!! No restaurant does every dish fantastical. Lets be real. The so called "blackened" shrimp was painfully gross. It was overloaded with paprika and salt, so nasty but I definitely ate that $14 protein charge. Wasn't tossing that. Brother got veg meatball sub with real mozz cheese and he liked it. Boo got chicken cheese steak and he said it was decent. We all got our food at different times!!! Oh, no you didn't. I don't care how busy you are. I dont care you are a pizza place. It is so rude to the person sitting there with no food. It wasnt a second either. It was ten minutes between 2 of us getting our dinner and my poor brother sitting there starving with nothing in front of him. Give a bread basket if you do that dumb stuff. So, our order was one spinach salad w/ double blackened shrimp, 2 subs with ff, 3 sodas, and 2 plain slices to go. Guess what I spent? A Benji.$100 82 plus 18 tip... almost to the penny. The pizza next to our table was looking so delicious though. I wish the waiter got over his ego and honestly told me what they made well. I asked him if getting the spinach salad was the right thing to do and he acted like it was his favorite. Lies... nothing special there. The slices to go he didn't even bother to heat up in their pizza oven. I promise you. My mom was waiting for warm pizza at the least ..it was room temperature. All facts. Why would you do that? Also, one waiter for the whole dining room who also has to do counter and phones is a stretch. He handled it but the service was POOR- Period. You need TWO people.
