After being turned away at Charmain's because apparently, you have to make reservations two weeks in advance!? We were welcomed at Black Cat by Jason. A very attentive and friendly staff member, and bar venue manager. I hadn't been in a couple of years. I am glad we had the opportunity again by chance. Although the upstairs bar wasn't staffed because of the pandemic and we were not planning on attending the live Jazz gig downstairs, Jason was kind enough to accommodate us. He offered to serve us appetizers and a cocktail at the bar. Something they were not ready for and that we appreciated very much. My understanding is that Black Cat is under new management with a brand new food and cocktail menu. We had a couple of glasses of wine. We also had an amazing in-house-made burrata served with fresh toasted French or Italian bread and fresh pears and a plate of fresh Ceviche. After chatting briefly about the new cocktail menu, Jason offered to make us his version of the classic martini. Infused vodka with rosemary and lavender (not sure I can actually remember all the ingredients). Best I've had actually. I will most definitely come back to support their new menu again. I have always enjoyed this venue. The Tenderloin used to be the Meca for nightclubs and bars in San Francisco back in the days. Like any cosmopolitan city, this area is facing challenges. Beautiful venue with so much potential but I wondered if this was the band's first time playing together? There was no chemistry and I wondered if they were complete strangers...They were truly awful. I will wait until there is another artist playing. Wouldn't punish myself to go see that band again. They even admitted they were out partying the night before and showed up a half hour late. Their instruments were not in tune and the audience had to sit through their sound check with screeching microphones and blaring noise. They had a very "I don't care attitude and it definitely showed. Restaurant notes: Food was great!! Be prepared to spend $30 per person (not including drinks). If you go upstairs you don't have to pay for the band or insult your ears either! Upstairs had a nice vibe with the same music and stock jazz music playing. read more

There are so many additional fees to the already extremely overpriced food and tickets. There are service fees, San Francisco health fees, and more. The food is mediocre but extremely expensive. I'm talking 16 bucks for a small Caesar salad. The first time I went here I was able to stay for all the sets of live music but the second time I was only allowed to see one set of music (around 45 minutes of music and 40 minutes of waiting for the band to start playing). The first time I went the band was amazing, and super inspiring. The second time the band was unrehearsed, spent too much time talking and seemed unprepared. I think there are other much better places to see great musicians without paying a fortune on "additional fees", minimums, and mediocre food. Also, good seating is not based on first come first serve. I got there before many and got a much worse table than people who came after me, even though all tickets were the same price. Also, be wary of the menu prices be different than ones on the check. I got the chicken karage which was 14 on the menu but $16 on the check. All three of us got this so it costed $6 extra plus all the taxes on it from all their fees. We told them this and they gave us $3 back instead of $12 or whatever it was supposed to be. We told them again, and they gave us $6 back, still wrong. We gave up at that point. read more

Stopped by Black Cat for a girlfriend's birthday on Friday, January 27th around 6pm. We started as a group of four and were able to grab half a table by the entrance. Later, we multiplied and basically took over the majority of the table. The power had gone out in the restaurant / bar, so it wasn't super crowded. But it did mean their credit card machines were down, so everything was cash only. Their Happy Hour is offered upstairs nightly, 5:30pm to 7pm, so luckily, we were able to take part. I ended up getting a couple High West Manhattans: high west double rye, carpano antica sweet vermouth, angostura bitters ($8). It was your typical light HH cocktail. Not strong and boozy like I normally prefer. They also offer four other beverages and four bites on their HH menu. All beverages were $8, while the bites range from $2-$4. A friend of mine also ordered a Sazerac: rittenhouse rye, jean luc pasque cognac, bitters, absinthe, lemon oil ($13). He seemed to enjoy it and I thought the presentation was cool. It was served in a stemless martini glass sitting in a small glass box filled with ice. We also got complimentary Popcorn: black truffle salt, which was nice. I didn't taste it, but I don't remember it smelling much like truffle. The service here was great given the black out. Our server was super sweet and accommodating. Half of us ordered from our server while the other half went up to the bar. I liked ordering from our server better as we didn't have to get his attention and flag him down like we did the bartenders. I wasn't a huge fan of their manhattan as it was too light for me, but I'd love to come back and try their food. One of my gfs came here right when they opened and raved about having a later dinner here. I may be back just for that. read more

Came here for a special occasion and it was a memorable night. We got there a little early and the downstairs maybe wasn't ready. We were told to head down and then someone told us to go back upstairs. If you show up early and grab a drink upstairs. Service was phenomenal before and during the show. The cocktail selection was diverse, shout out to who ever is making the menu. Food was a smidge over price but quite tasty. I would highly recommended taking someone special here! What an amazing place to enjoy cocktails, even better LIVE JAZZ, and scrumptious food. Note: when a live band is playing, cover is now $10 - $15 and you get charged a cover even if you have a reservation and are ordering food. The live jazz place is downstairs, and you definitely should have a reservation. There is a huge selection of cocktails, wine, whiskey, and the like. It's a bit pricey (cocktails are $12 - $15) but I guess they can get away with it since this is SF. Location, however, is not ideal (right in the smack middle of the TL). But once you get inside, you are charmed by the dark, ambient, and upscale decor. You get escorted downstairs if you have a reservation - oh so fancy! Food was pretty darn delicious. We ordered the truffle mac n' cheese ($14), chicken fried RABBIT (for real, rabbit) ($18), chipotle pomme gratin (potatoes) ($6). I recommend all three! Thank you for a great experience, Jazz Cat. This place is awesome but very expensive. I've been about 6 times over the past year or so...and it took some courage the first time as the neighborhood is not the most inviting. The music has always been great - really good bands, mostly from new york it seems. The sound is also fantastic. Very small, classy and intimate. Obviously this is a passion project by the owners and they have changed around their model a few times. The drinks are great and the food is average+. The killer for me is how expensive it has gotten during the iterations. While prices seem reasonable, they ballon with a 39% surcharge that includes tip (20%), tax(9%) and an unheard of 10% SF mandate. My recent experience for one person was $200 which included the $50 music/reservation charge. Complaining about prices doesn't seem very SF, but pricing is the only thing that keeps me from going more often. Can i afford it, yes. Is the value a little out of whack, yes too. read more

We visited the Black Cat during a quick visit to San Francisco. They have a rotation of jazz musicians, and we had the great pleasure of hearing Marius Van Den Brink Quintet. The music had me mesmerized. The musicians vibe could be felt throughout the jazz club. At the club, we had dessert and drinks, and both were phenomenal. The waitresses provided service without taking up space or sound, so they didn't take away from the atmosphere. It was the classy way to celebrate my birthday. read more

We had a great time last night at the supper club. Staff is awesome, atmosphere is awesome and food is also very good. This is a pricy night but just know that going in and have fun. The tenderloin seems to get more and more sketchy so be sure and Uber in and out. Our server was Herty B (I thought I heard Philipe so I apologize if I called you the wrong name all freakin night long). People speak in hushed tones as there's a band and I can't hear anymore apparently. There's a gratuity applied to your bill and it feels unappreciative to not add a tip but I guess at some time cheap asses must not have been tipping so there's that. Thanks for a great night. Black Cat has a lot of potential. I came in with my gf for her birthday and we enjoyed the music a lot. Make sure to not book the tables in the front. It's not very comfortable and the speakers are right next to your ears. Too loud to be enjoyable. When ordering cocktails make sure to ask questions. I ordered a Gin sour with well Gin and ended up paying $20 for that cocktail. There was nothing special about it. I don't understand why I was charged $4 extra for that cocktail. They didn't do anything special to elevate the drink. They are lacking transparency with the costumers. read more

First off the location is really sketchy at best, being from So Cal it reminds me of skid row. With that said, we took a Lyft there and back so we got dropped off/picked up right at the door (problem solved). Ambiance was really nice and fitting for a hip jazz scene, the band was wonderful with a great jazz singer. Food was great but appetizer size portions so don't be surprised. Yes, the drinks were pricey but good. I know some people complain about the cost in total but you get what you pay for plus how often do you get this experience? Black Cat is a new restaurant that opened about 3-4 weeks ago. I'm so glad I was able to dine here even though it's in a sketchy area (TL aka tenderloin). Upstairs is first come first serve as you go down stairs, its a vintage dining area with a bar down stairs too. Everything I ordered was delicious except for the cod/squid meatballs. I'm a type of person who likes to try new and adventurous food but it's not for everyone haha. I recommend to try the fresh oysters and baked! Why not have two and have the best of both worlds? They're both really delicious if you are an oyster lover! I would definitely come back and come for happy hour too. They also have live music (piano) on Thursday-Saturday around 10PM. read more

We booked a reservation for dinner and a show by the Dan Montgomery Band. The band was really good and the ambiance was really nice once inside. Being from out of town there was no way for us to know this and I would have appreciated a heads up from the business. A couple things that would keep me from returning. I think the black cat owes it to customers to note in its website that this area of SF is not safe to walk in whatsoever. We thought a .5 mile walk from our hotel would be no big deal in daylight hours but we were definitely mistaken. We (three women) did not feel safe and the smell of urine along the streets as well as the garbage and street housing was unsettling to say the least. Black Cat should let people know they shouldn't walk here. It was enjoyable once inside but do not walk to or from here. The food was good however it was priced really high in my opinion even for SF. Three of us each had a salad, entree, desert and then one alcoholic drink each and it was $370 after nearly $100 in service fees. Our server visited a few times but wasnt overly friendly and certainly did not earn $80 in a tip. If I ever did go again, I would just get a desert or appetizer to share. The big thing for us was they included a tip automatically but didn't tell us (and the menu does not indicate this either) plus the receipt has a tip suggestion thing at the bottom which is super misleading. Luckily we caught this and avoided tipping 40% unknowingly. Plus the auto tip is charged onto the $45 per person cover which doesn't make any sense (so basically $54 cover per person). Just seemed like they're trying to be sneaky to get a few extra bucks which isn't cool. I get that the pandemic was tough on businesses in this neighborhood but there's gotta be better ways to adapt. read more

However, do not sit at the bar for a 1st seating unless you want to listen to clueless staff gab during the show & run a dishwasher during the last song. Wish I'd known we'd be subjected to that so we could've made a better seating decision. That said make sure your dishwasher is working properly & not emitting high-pitched metallic screeching under the music, hoping patrons won't notice. I made reservations for Black Cat at 6pm on a Saturday. We showed up right on time and we waited. It took 10 minutes for the host to seat us downstairs. They said "everyone arrived all at once" which is understandable but I made a reservation and if others did as well, it seems like this was to be expected. Once we were seated downstairs, we didn't see a server for 15 minutes. At this point it was 6:25pm and we still hadn't ordered a drink. The server showed up and said that there was a mix up between her and the bartender as to who had our table. She was very nice and very apologetic. It took another ten or fifteen minutes to get our drink and they were quite good. The food came out quickly and was very tasty. I'll chock this up to growing pains, but the service and timing was pretty disappointing. The atmosphere was very cool. It would be fun to see a show here. The food here was good and the drinks were good but a little expensive. I don't know if I need to come back here but I wouldn't mind. Hopefully they get the timing better. read more

First time coming back to Black Cat after years. Man this place has gone downhill from when it originally opened. The service in our section with Rafael was some of the worst I've ever experienced. We wanted to spend more $$ but our server didn't seem to want to work or he was taking all of his OSHA approved breaks at once. Warning!!! This is in the tenderloin district and super sketchy neighborhood. The homelessness has gotten out of control and you're literally walking over human feces to get here. At night my husband did not want me walking to the car so he grabbed the car while I waited at the club. With that said, once inside it's a nice spot. I was disappointed with the show, the musician played for an hour, they bussed the table and handed us the bill. We felt rushed. Certainly wanted to stay longer for the artist but you get two hours at your table and that's it. One hour to eat and one hour for music so definitely not a lounge vibe where you can keep your tab open and just enjoy the night. You can go to the bar but it's crowded with no available seating. We spent $100 for the show and dinner and drinks was $240, so total $340 - pretty expensive for a 2 hour night. read more

This spot is awesome! It's divey and underground, but modern and renovated. They play good jazz music and different bands. The Casey Benjamin Group played last night. T and I saw the later 10:15 show. The group was lively and enjoyable. The music is very loud though and I needed earplugs. We had some bites and drinks. I had a cocktail and banh mi. We shared the deviled eggs and pork belly. He had a lamb burger. We agreed the food was good, but we agreed that the deviled eggs were skippable. It was a great night out here. The atmosphere is awesome. It feels like old San Francisco for a new generation. The service is attentive and positive. Four of us made a reservation for 9:30 show, showed up 15 min early and were immediately seated at a good table in front of stage. Drinks and food arrived fast, and were of good quality. We stayed later than our 2 hour slot, but nobody asked us to leave... Well, to be honest, the place wasn't full so perhaps under different circumstances they would... but it's business. Now, the show was amazing. The band - Collectivity - was super good. Excellent prog Jazz, good choice. I will definitely keep an eye on this place for more shows like this. Cheers! read more

I will never go to the Black Cat again. Besides being located in the dangerous Tenderloin neighborhood filled with homeless gangs I was assaulted with rude and incompetent staff once I entered the club. The 7: 30 show had already started downstairs so after giving the woman greeter my credit card and told what seat downstairs to occupy I went downstairs to seat myself. The bar stools are a lawsuit waiting to happen. Tables crowd in front making it very uncomfortable to sit. Half way thru the show the man at the bottom of the stairs told me that I needed to go back upstairs because I wasn't seated properly. I refused to go back up stairs and he fetched another bald headed staff member that threatened to throw me out. I was dressed in a suit and tie and had merely seated myself so I wouldn't miss the show that had already started. This rude behavior was totally uncalled for. I was also charged a $10.00 undisclosed gratuity that apparently this clue is notorious for doing. The owner Mr. Fritz Quattlebaum needs to hire better staff. read more

i was initially going to rate Black Cat a 2 star, but the show was outstanding so it's hard to go that low but the service was meh. which, for the type of establishment that it is, the decor, the prices for the meals, the ambiance it's created, is unacceptable. i've experienced an array of different restaurants/venues ranging from mom-and-pop shops with incredible customer service to michelin star restaurants with on-par, excellent service, and i've also visited other jazz bars where the customer service is what you expect. this place needs some major improvements, and it needs to start with the bald guy who walks around like he has a chip on his shoulder/ hates customers/ hates his life choices, or all the above. i walked in with a birthday cake because we were there to celebrate my cousin's birthday. i walked in a great mood for obvious reasons, and the bald guy (really should've got his name but unfortunately, he pissed me off to even consider that an option) said " you can't bring that in here." i was confused because NOWHERE on the website did it state that. then he says "we charge a cutting fee of $8 dollars PER SLICE." im sorry...what? i just spent a good amount of money for the cake now i have to pay an additional fee that wasn't at all listed anywhere on their website. i said hell no and was going to walk it back to the car but they agreed to hold it. i brushed it off and proceeded to follow the kind woman who acknowledged that we were there to celebrate a birthday, you know, a joyous time, i guess joy really bothered that guy. anywho, we got stairs to the whole section we had rented out and had an absolute blast. the prices are also not accurate on the website and should be updated to reflect the menu's at the restaurant. they should ALSO mention that not only is there a 10% fee for SF Health Mandate but they also charge 20% auto gratuity. we ordered the wagyu steak, the burger, parm fries, charcuterie board, lots of drinks and to be honest, everything was ok. for the price you're basically paying for the convenience of them having food, but it's definitely not worth what they're charging. the wagyu was tough, the burger was a gourmet big mac. the parm fries were actually really good but not $11 good. some of the pros because writing this review is reminding me of all the annoying aspects of the night that irritated me that i had to just suck up because i did not want to ruin my cousins birthday celebration. the show was spectacular! i mean hands down the talent that walks through those doors is worth every penny. i would avoid renting out the section behind the bar because they have a huge brick post that blocks part of the stage. obviously if you have a larger crowd then, oh well but i wish i would've chosen the seats front and center instead. the espresso martini was probably the best one ive ever had and i've had them at a good amount of locations, this one was super tasty. as i'd expect with it being $19. key takeaways, if you encounter a bald, grouch looking dude, expect him to be grouchy and interact with him as little as possible. don't come here for food, but if you must eat something, order the fries. cocktails are delicious but maybe pre-game somewhere else beforehand. if you love jazz and mostly care about the show, sit in front of the stage or to the left of it, avoid sitting anywhere near the opposite wall or behind the bar because it'll ruin the experience. i will likely return because, i love jazz, but there are so many thing i would do differently due to my experience. read more

The reason I give this place 3 stars is because the food was a two but the music and ambiance was a 5. The food we had wasn't great. I recommend grabbing dinner before and having desert and maybe a cocktail or two at black cat. This was our first time going me and my bf went for a date night. We bought tickets to the 9:30 show. Before heading out to the city we looked at the Yelp reviews and decided that maybe we should grab a small dinner somewhere else and then have small bites and drinks at black cat. My bf was not really to excited about it being in the TL and also not too happy about the added 20% gratuity and from the menu on their website I guess they expect you to tip on top of that. once we ubered to black cat and walked down stairs we were greeted by a nice hostess and she took us to the dimly lit room. the vibe and ambiance was so nice. It felt intimate and romantic. We ordered two dirty martinis and to be honest the martinis were not that great compared to where we had dinner prior. I actually ended up spitting out the olive in my napkin they were kinda soggy and nasty and the glass wasn't chilled. We also ordered there seafood dish, the shrimp was over cooked and the fish had a fishy taste. We then asked for a decaf expresso to go with our flan but to our surprise they didn't offer expressos so we just got the flan. The flan was good it wasn't the best flan but it was yummy. But what was the best thing about this place was the music I loved the live music they were all so good and entertaining. I was amazed. This morning we talked about our experience and we both agreed we would go back. the service was good to but I just wished their food and drinks were better because it would make the whole experience so much better. I wish they had a steakhouse menu and charged more for drinks and food and took the time to make everything with quality instead of serving the food they had. WOW, Black Cat is the bomb!!! Super delish sharable food, amazing cocktails, and world class live jazz, plus the service is impeccable. The decor is sophisticated and sexy . Someone put a lot of love and thought into designing this place. I went with a large group of friends for a first LIVE recording of an album in almost 60 years in the Tenderloin, for Keyon Harrold, re-recording his Grammy award album, "The Mugician". Very overpriced. Music was nice, however not worth $35+ a ticket. On top of that my bill for the two of us for 4 drinks and some fries was $135. Beware of the 20% gratuity tacked on the bill which they don't tell you about. Frustratingly chaotic and disorganized. Arrived on time for my 8:45 reservation only to see the upstairs bar so jam packed you couldn't even squeeze in. Finally I was able to ask another couple and heard they were told not to go downstairs yet because shows were running late. No one announced this so everyone was just kind of standing around very confused. After 45 minutes of waiting, the large crowd was finally sat downstairs where the show began about an hour late. Servers overwhelmed too so took forever to order a drink. Overall, its a nice atmosphere but definitely not worth the at least $ 200 you will spend. I've been trying to get to black cat for months now and finally made it out last night. Their lineup of jazz artists is stellar and they do this almost every night! It really is a city staple that you should really keep supporting so it doesn't go under like all the other music venues in the city. I came to see Maurice "Mobetta" Brown and was in awe by him and his band. Black cat did not disappoint either, I suggest ordering the "tenderloin Manhattan." It's a unique variation of the classic drink and is very good. Not to mention the name is on point. read more

My fiancé and I came here for dinner on a Saturday night and had a mixed experience- the ambiance / live music and cocktails were a treat, but the food (and their steep prices) fell short of our expectations. We spent close to $200 for cover ($20 per person charge for live shows), a cheese plate, two cocktails, lobster mac n cheese (starter), and yakitori chicken (entree), and two espressos. The mac n cheese had an interesting sour taste and I found only two pieces of lobster. The yakitori came on two skewers in a thai curry sauce - decent, but I was surprised at the small portion and lack of rice- it was a very bland entree. Overall, we enjoyed the music and we had exceptional service (waters were refilled constantly and waiters always checked in on us), but the prices were not worth it. 5 Stars is a bold rating, yet I feel that Black Cat deserves 5 Stars for the world class Jazz that they book into San Francisco. Everything else is lovely; the subterranean venue, the mid 20th century vibe, the whisky list and classic cocktails but the reason to book a 1000pm table at the Black Cat is for the music. The food on offer is surprisingly elegant ranging from house made charcuterie to fresh local oysters with several vegetarian options like a cauliflower steak that my wife enjoys.
