One of my favorites jazz bars in San Francisco. They are located in a very unassuming area. I have made reservations prior to arrival, and also been successful by showing up, and paying at the door. We were impressed with list of various artists performing at this bar. We tried a few cocktails, and all of them were well-crafted. This is a lovely jazz venue in the city. The "music-focused preferred seats" on OpenTable cost $5 extra when reserving online, which advertises best sound and sight lines of the performance on stage. We ended up reserving standard seating for Saturday, and were pleasantly surprised to be seated right next to the stage (side view), allowing for a decent experience while saving a few bucks. The service was super slow at arrival to seat guests, but once we entered the main room, the frustration melted away. Loved the chic atmosphere and vibe, with dim reddish lighting setting the mood. SLUGish Ensemble did a remarkable job entertaining the crowd, playing an hour of live music while we were there (one of two sets by the band on this evening). The sounds of the guitar, saxophone, oboe, drums, acoustic piano, synthesizer (keyboard), and bass... great rhythms and melodies to keep the audience engaged, especially with some of their SF-themed songs. We got the Mister Loveless cocktail, The Tipple's Deluxe Martini w/ gin (which was really strong), and food off the dim sum menu at the Fat Cat. Braised short ribs, spinach seafood dumplings, lamb & carrot dumplings, bok choy & mushroom dumplings, roasted duck & pork belly bao, and pork & shrimp siu mai. Everything was served graduallly to our table, starting 15 minutes after we ordered, except the braised short ribs which was served at the very end of the jazz set. The buns and dumplings were good for americanized versions of these dishes. Don't expect the quality you would get at an authentic dim sum restaurant. Also, they charge a 21% service fee on all checks, so I'm gonna say there's no need for an additional tip. read more

Love the ambiance in here! I had been wanting to explore more jazz lounges, and Mr. Tipple's did not disappoint. It's located in a non-descript alley and I went on a weekday with a friend - there was a $15 cover. Inside, we got seated pretty quickly. It's relatively small inside, so everyone has a pretty front and center view of the stage -- and the musicians were fantastic! They played for maybe 45 minutes and my friend and I got some small bites to share as a second dinner. The shumai and duck/pork belly bao were decent, about what you'd expect at a jazz club and not a Chinese restaurant lol. Genuinely so impressed with my visit here. I had an 8pm Sunday reservation, and every single table was full. The ambiance was incredible - it felt warm and romantic, with dim lighting and a spotlight on the stage. This seemed to be a popular date night spot, with cozy two-seat tables with a perfect view of the stage. The employees were all friendly and efficient, checking in on us but not drawing attention away from the musicians. The food selection was unique. I've never been to a jazz bar that serves dim sum. I came to check out Mr. Tipple's on a Thursday night for their dim sum dinner and the first act of the night. The crowd is a mix of friends and couples (both younger and older) which is nice to see. Definitely a very friendly and approachable club to listen to live jazz. For food, we tried a bunch of dim sum including the spinach & seafood dumplings, pork baos, shu mai, and marinated cucumbers. Everything was solid but definitely not very authentic. The cucumbers for example were salted but no vinegar or chili oil as you would see at more traditional dim sum spots. What a great club! It's the perfect size (intimate, but not crowded), the music is not over-amplified (because it doesn't have to be), and the ambiance is 'speakeasy'. Asian food seemed an odd choice for a jazz club, but the food was tasty (spinach and seafood dumplings are a standout). Service was good: attentive while unobtrusive. We opted for the $15 tickets because we thought that the $20 might put us too close to the band, hence be too loud. Two conclusions: (1) we had great visibility from our $15 seats and (2) being up front in the $20 seats would have been fine, too, because the sound was not overdone. I've been wanting to go to a jazz club for years and last night I finally did just that. Our reservation was at 7 but we got there at 7:10. They explain the process when you check in. You open a tab before you're even seated and then they take you to your table. You have 90 minutes at that table and if you want to stay longer you can you'll just be moved to the bar area in the back. We got seated right in front of the stage. Everyone's talking amongst themselves but when the music starts you need to keep the noise to a minimum so everyone can enjoy the music. When you're seated they give you a drink and food menu and a stamp you use to pick out what you want. They have dim sum type food, cocktails, mocktails with CBD and sodas. You can also order the mocktails without CBD. We ordered the Shanghai XLB soup dumplings, chicken wontons and crispy potstickers as well as the zobo mocktail and a ginger beer. They brought us a cucumber salad that we didn't order and when we asked the waitress about it she said it was on the house. When we got our bill we were charged for it. It's fine it was good but if they tell you something is on the house you would think it meant free lol. Other than that the service was great. There were 2 bands while we were there. They play for about an hour each with a 20 minute or so break in between to set up. There's a tip jar that goes directly to the musicians and I was happy many patrons including ourselves left something in the jar. Throughout the set I was drawn to a different instrument each song which was cool. There's free street parking. At least it was free when we got there (7pm). The place is easy to find. It's bigger than I thought it'd be but still has that intimate feeling. Gender neutral bathroom with individual stalls and communal sink area. Would come back again! read more

We got spicy dumplings and it was surprisingly quality dim sum. No pics of the dumpling but we also ordered 2 desserts to share - the chocolate mousse with pineapple - such an odd combination but it works - and a mochi waffle with black sesame and earl grey ice cream. I really liked the black sesame and my partner liked the earl grey so it was a good combo. We saw the Sonia Cuenca Jazz Quartet and stayed for both sets since it wasn't crowded. BEWARE: SHADY PRICING PRACTICES !! We were really looking forward to our Valentines Day reservation, which we booked and paid for months in advance through OpenTable at $25 per ticket. 2 weeks later, the venue contacted us saying they had forgotten to apply "special Valentine's Day pricing" and asked us to pay an additional $50 per seat after the fact. We declined and pointed out that their own terms and conditions say that ticket sales are final. Although they admitted in writing it was their fault, they did not honor our reservation. They canceled our tickets, claiming they no longer had seating available, even though the same show had availability online. Very disappointing experience and not something I'd want anyone else to deal with, especially for a special occasion. It seems like these deceptive pricing practices are not isolated incidents based on other reviews. They clearly prioritize profits over the customer. read more

When he made the reservation, he also got to choose our table so we were seated immediately. We had a 90 minute time limit at the table. After that, we could move to the bar, but it ended up being enough time. Once you're seated, you get a dim sum order form and a stamp. You'll stamp the items you'd like and the amount of times you stamp on each item, is how many orders you'd like to get. The server also will take your orders for any drinks. We ordered for food chicken wontons ($9), pork & shrimp siu mai ($9), shanghai xlb soup dumplings ($9), and the braised short ribs ($36). For drinks we got the money cat ($16), the midnight bandit ($16), overnight celebrity ($20). Everything was so good! I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the dim sum. The xlb soup dumplings were my favorite and the braised short ribs were definitely enough to share. The money cat drink comes in a fun cup and it reminds me of a good tiki drink. I was a little worried about the vermouth in the midnight bandit but it just ended up tasting like a classic espresso martini. Mr Tipple's Recording Studio is like a hidden gem of a date night spot! If you love specialty cocktails, dim sum, and live jazz, this is your jam. I think they normally have a cover charge (was $15 the night I went). You don't need a reservation unless you want a guaranteed up-close-to-the-stage table. If you don't have a reservation, you might only get bar seats which are not bad at all. Since I'm an Old Fashioned cocktail lover, I went with the "A Couple of Miso-Maple Old Fashioneds." It comes pre-mixed in a bottle that contains enough for two people and you can't just order this drink for one. The beverage itself was not bad but I probably wouldn't get again especially since they're charging a lot for pre-made stuff (i.e. not even mixing it in front of you). I'm taking off a star since they charge gratuity automatically on everything including the cover charge. Still, I'd come back, especially if there was an artist I was interested in seeing! read more

One of my all time fave SF jazz spots. Not only do they have an amazing rotation of musicians, but the vibe is on point, as well as the food, cocktails and service. Tonight we saw Marianne Solivan and her trio, while enjoying the bar's specialty miso old fashioned (to die for), and many plates of small bites plus their salmon plate (divine). This is an ideal date night location, and a great opportunity to dress up a little, though not necessary, but who doesn't love a reason to get a lil snazzy. It's such a chic atmosphere. Whomever designed the place put so much attention to detail, from the back lit panel walls to the custom fabric drapes, even the bathroom. What an amazing night out. Highly recommend. It's hard to describe Mr. Tipple's with words - they've done such a phenomenal job crafting this absolutely incomparable atmosphere for music, drinks, and conversation that you have to experience to believe. Our party of 3 found our way to Mr. Tipple's after a Giants game on a chilly Saturday evening around 10PM. Because we didn't have a prior reservation, our very welcoming hostess offered us standing room near the bar with a $15 cover, with the promise that she would find us a table when one opened up and reservations were filled. They do have a dedicated seating area advertised towards more acoustically inclined guests at a slightly higher price point surrounding the stage. We ordered the Money Cat, a cantaloupe drink, and a glass of cab sauv. Although the red paired nicely with the music and the mood, my personal favorite was the Money Cat - a gently warm and citrusy treat. Because we had filled up at the game, we didn't get the chance to try out the dumpling popup that they are currently hosting, but hopefully we'll be able to try it again before they rotate out.
