I came on Labor Day and they had one waitress for the entire dining room so the service was really poor. It took 30 minutes for her to get our check and charge the card. It also took us a long time to sit down. I had the wings and they were really spicy but they were on the dry side. Overall I wasn't impressed and I doubt I'll come back. read more

There was not 1 thing wrong with this place! A group of us came here after paddle boarding down the Saugatuck. it was a Saturday and we were ready for some beers! When we arrived we got bar seats and met Mike! He was a super nice, friendly guy who you could tell knew his regulars and made us newbys feel at home. We ordered a round of beers and knew right away we needed some steamers! We put in 2 orders for the 4 of us and when they arrived, the portions were HUGE! We happily ate every last one, but the portion was larger than expected! The steamers came with a mug of steaming broth and a size of butter for dipping. Had I not been in public, I would have gotten a straw and had that broth as a meal in itself - it was that good! The steamers were large, plump, and cooked to perfection! It was fun to see our out of town friends enjoy their first steamer experience and they loved them just as much! I will admit I am a bit of a seafood snob, having been spoiled on Cape Cod and Baltimore seafood all my life - but these were right up there with the best I've had! This whole bar/restaurant has a laid back feel that is sometimes lost in the Westport/Fairfield County area... Everyone was friendly and didn't try to be anything other than they were - a dive-type bar with fantastic food and cold beers. Took a drive up I-95 from Jersey to come here after seeing a re-run of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Yes, I guess it's a dive, but its a really great atmosphere with exceptionally friendly service. I won't take any points off for the weak air conditioning (it was prob the hottest day of the year) and the somewhat frantic service or the 1.5 hr wait (coincidentilly we came on the same day as an entire yacht club reunion/party). All of the appetizers we had (escargot, clams casino, fried calamari, NE clam chowder, crab cakes) were delicious. Beware the crab cakes are a little "well done" on the outside, but stil tasted good. I'm sorry they ran out of steamers - I really wanted to try those :( The stuffed burger (stuffed with either bleu cheese, pepperjack, brie, or one other cheese I can't remember) was very good, BUT I deduct one star because there's no way that burger was 1/2 pound (you have a choice between 1/2 lb and 3/4 lb). It was more of 1/4 lb. I think the burger was too hyped up by Guy Fieri. Also, they didn't do a good job of promoting their specials. They were written on a board that was resting on the floor near the entrance. So make sure to ask. I would definitely come here again, but would prob get here no later than 11:30 to try and beat the traffic and the crowds. read more

The place looks like a complete dive from the outside but actually had a lot of character. The food was delicious; we had oysters, stuffer burger, wings, onion rings and chicken tenders. I've been meaning to try this joint, and on a weeknight, I figured I could watch a little baseball and try out their famous food. Short story: not going back. It is definitely the dive-bar style of joint. Very dark, fairly loud music, and yes, it is on a barge on the river (which is the best part about it: the river views from the bar seats). An assorted cast of characters inside, locals mostly, but a good range of folks. Not a "rough" crowd. Bartender noticed me quickly and poured a draft. Menu? Yes. In my experience, you can judge a place on their burger. It's the one thing that can't really come out of a can and be good. Even if the burger is a frozen sysco patty, the details can make for an A+ or lack of details can sink it down to a D-. Black Duck was going to show it's feathers through their burger. I ordered a Wisconsin which was stuffed with cheddar. The bartender asked, "You want fries or onion rings with that?" Fries it was. The burger came out so burned on the outside but medium inside. It was like eating a piece of firewood it was so charred outside. Terrible. The "Wisconsin" cheddar was oozing out, so you would think that would save the burger, but it was more like Wiz-consin (as in cheez wiz). Flavorless and rubbery. I'm Irish, so it's hard to leave fries behind on the plate, but the steak fries were cool and flaccid, I left the plate full of them. The bathroom was about as bad as I have seen in any place that served food. I'm no prude, and I've used plenty of disgusting bathrooms, but for it to reek so badly of urine, it can't have been cleaned any time since the Clinton administration. Best part: the soap was in a squirt bottle, like what you would use to add a garnish to a dish in the kitchen. It says "we care about your cleanliness and that of our employees" loud and clear. The bill came and it was pretty high. The draft beer was premium and fairly priced, I just expected cheaper considering the environment. It was the $2 extra for fries that really bugged me. I guess someplace on the menu it warned me, but it is so dark in there I dare anyone to find the small print on the menu without using a flashlight. When somebody says, "fries or onion rings" I assume they mean that it already comes with it. An easy fix is to say "Do you want to ADD fries or onion rings?" Then I know to expect extra. It's a little thing, but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth (on top of the carbon I was picking out of my teeth). Grab a beer at Black Duck but read the fine print and don't expect much from the menu. And wash your shoes when you get home if you use the bathroom. read more

The best dive bar in Westport. Period. Love the bleu cheese stuffed cheeseburgers and the sweet potato fries. Pair that with a draft IPA and I'm in Heaven! Plus I feel so much better about myself when I'm staggering since the floor is kinda uneven. It's tucked away under the highway on the Saugatuck River - and you feel like you've discovered a hidden gem - because you have. Karaoke Night isn't lame like in most other places - and the staff is way underrated. Not overly in your face friendly - cause they don't have to be - but solid and efficient. Just like you want when you've had a few and just want to eat some amazing pub food. Let me start by saying that I REALLY wanted to like this place. I absolutely love hole in the wall "local" dives, which this had the makings of; however, this place came up quite short, as the food was absolutely awful. Had the fried calamari (fair) and their famous Brie filled burger (terrible) with a side of rings (fair). Ordered the burger "pink" as "medium" can take on a bunch of different meanings - long story short, what they served resembled a piece of Kingsford charcoal on a roll. Had shown up starving and could still only "politely" eat half of this murdered burger. As for my daughters, they had the kids hotdog meal (poor quality) and the kids hamburger meal (similar to mine, a twice burnt hockey puck). Unfortunately, almost all of the meals were trashed, seeing it was truly that overcooked (think high school cafeteria food). Again, it's not my style to trash a place, especially one I really wanted to like; however, there is no way that I can ever recommend this place for the food. The style and decor? Without a doubt - I dug the vibe. But the food is seriously bad enough to keep me from ever stepping into the Duck again. read more

Let me say that I have eaten at the Black Duck for many years and their food is great. I love their burgers and clam chowder but the service on my last trip was not up to par. I sat at the bar recently with friend of mine from out of town. The female bartender brought us drinks and then proceeded to have a drawn out greeting with some of her friend's. Her friends had come in about ten minutes after we arrived. The bartender then tended to ringing other patrons. The Bartender went back to her friends and had another long drawn out conversation, and then proceeded to explain the menu for 20 minutes or so. After finally taking her friends order she finally came over to us. We had been sitting there for 45 minutes. At that point we asked for the check, paid for out drinks and left. We went to over to Cherry Street and were waited on promptly. Peter your food is great but you need to teach your Bartender how to treat customers. read more

I've been coming to the Black Duck for my entire life, since I grew up right down the road and have had many mixed experiences over the years. Came in tonight with a party of 6 and there was a bit of a wait which is to be expected on a summer night. The wait was long, which is to be expected as it was a beautiful night and I can even excuse the long wait to have our orders taken and served food. However, the staff was rude which I'm not used to. It started to downpour outside and the restaurant began to leak in 2 different spots (right over our tables!). That's part of the charm of Black Duck so we laughed it off. But the staff was not attentive to the fact that our food was getting wet, or our requests to move the table, and we did it ourselves.The bartender was rude and disinterested as well. Overall, the Black Duck has gone downhill a lot since it became well known on TV, and their prices jumped too. read more

A dive. A glorious dive. Usually our first stop while visiting relatives in the area. Nice people waiting in line & nice waitstaff. After numerous visits this is what we order: pitcher of beer, large order of steamer clams, Caesar salad. TV is always turned on to sports - tonight it's game 3 of NBA playoffs (Go Warriors!) & I'm trying to convince someone to change "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader" to Giants (ahem, I mean Mets) baseball. Found this place via YELP while in Westport doing some holiday shopping. Love the dive bar and nautical narrative of Black Duck. Sat at the bar and the bartender fitted right in with the salty narrative. We ordered the fried oyster and scallop baskets. Extremely impressed with the freshness of the seafood and quality of cooking especially for fried food. Also killer onion rings. Loved eating at the bar as it has front row seat to the water. What a great way to spend part of Saturday afternoon before the craziness of holiday shopping! read more

It is what it is....a dive...in Westport CT. The only one for that matter. Go for a burger and a beer. Like all dives, it is packed with locals, softball teams. It can be loud, because it's a popular local dive. If you want quiet fine dining, there are plenty of mediocre fine dining restaurants in Westport. If you want to watch a football game, drink a beer, have a burger, and burp when your done....you'll be right at home. read more

This place is also a great place if you are in the mood to grab a burger (especially their stuffed burgers). The food is great, a good place for fresh seafood and generous portions. If you're looking for fancy, this is not it...just good, comforting food. My colleagues and I decided to try the Black Duck after reading reviews and seeing it appeared on diners drive-ins and dives. The restaurant is quaint very bar like in nature the food however it is far more than your average bar fair. The steamers were fantastic cooked perfectly and tasted delicious, several of us had lobster again cooked perfectly and delicious. The waitstaff was energetic and fun the food came quickly and everything was just as ordered. Definitely a place to try if you're in the area read more

Driving about an hour to eat at this place a few times already. The steamers are the must get. Service is good and the food is even better.

We stopped in our way to Block Island RI to have dinner at the café. We had steamers and clams casino for our appetizers. The clams casino were excellent but the steamers were a bit gritty. I had a fried shrimp basket which was excellent. They were out of curly fries so we had sweet potato fries. The owner actually came over to our table and sat down with us to talk about places we could visit on the CT coast line. He was very nice as was the waitress. read more
