Let's all be thankful for this legit ramen spot in our town. It's taken me forever to get over here but man I'm glad I did & now it's going to be in my regular rotation. I got the garlic version & it was so damn packed full of flavor I was shaken. My first ramen was had in Tokyo so I try to not be a snob & complain too much about sub par ramen here in the states which is so often trash & not worth the money. Honestly my favorite ramen place in the Nashville area. I think the quality of the noodles slightly beat out Two Ten Jack & Otaku Ramen, but those are close behind. Broth is phenomenal & I ordered the Hellfire Style Miso Tonkotsu which came with chili crisp on the side. Spicy, but not uncomfortably spicy. Good quantity as well! Parking is easy, big parking lot for Sylvan Supply in general. It's located inside Bearded Iris. It's seat yourself, so coming with a larger group may be difficult on weekends. Not really a wait service. You scan a QR code to order, & they'll bring your food & water out to you. Drinks you order yourself at the bar. Ambiance is fine. The space is on the smaller side & music can be a little loud when crowded, but overall a comfy place to grab a beer, ramen, & hang out. The food deserves a 5/5, but taking off a star for 20% pre-paid "mandatory gratuity" for a restaurant that's primarily self-service. I'm all for tipping after a great dining experience, wait service, & making sure employees are paid sufficiently. But, I agree with other Yelpers. When you have to seat yourself, scan a QR code to order online for yourself, get up & get your own drinks, then pay a "mandatory 20% gratuity" before you receive any type of food or service, I'm not sure that's appropriate - especially when the ramen is a hefty $20 per serving to begin with. This ramen spot is nestled within the Bearded Iris brewery. We did not know this upon our arrival, but it was a fine surprise and added to the experience! Please keep in mind this place is a brewery first, and the way the ordering process is set up shows that. Once you pick your table (There are many beautiful options to choose from), you scan the QR code to order your meal. Each order is automatically charged a 20% service fee; however, you are helped communally by many of the team members. We didn't have a problem with it. Our dinner in total was on the pricey side for me, but I will leave it up to debate whether the quality of food and experience backs the price. Our food arrived quickly. The crispy onigiri was my personal favorite. The ramen broth had a fantastic depth of flavor as well as the egg and carrots which were the ramen topping stars in our opinion. All in all, a great dinner combined with great service. We will return to try out their new autumn menu. Unfortunately there was a long hair fried into our onigiri. Black Dynasty Ramen was one of my favorite ramen places in Nashville because of their flavors, but I did not have a good experience here. I wanted to like it because it's at a new place in Sylvan Supply and it's in Bearded Iris Brewing so there's beer and ramen. They do a 20% auto gratuity (if you hover it, it says for large parties, but you'll get an auto 20% gratuity even if it's one person). I don't mind giving that gratuity at all if there was good service. For cups of water, you have to go and fill it up yourself. To order beer, you also have to go up to the bar and order. To order food, it was an easy process where you order online and paid on the app. When I ordered my ramen, I paid for extra toppings and sauces and it didn't come with it so I had to go back and ask them for it. Then they forgot my onigiri appetizer and I had to go back to the bar and ask for it as well. For my ramen and onigiri, I paid almost $8 in tip for one person and the only service I got was someone bringing the food, yet they forgot several things and I had to get my own water. Food was good though! The miso tonkotsu ramen (pork) was flavorful and delicious. Very rich broth, noodles were cooked perfectly, and it came with an egg, nori seaweed, a piece of pork belly, and some pickled veggies. This is one of those weird new businesses; the ramen place is embedded in a brewery (though you can buy beer at any time, the ramen hours are more limited). There is no separate storefront for the ramen, you just walk into the bar, and you order on your phone by scanning a code, hoping that something will eventually appear. It is an oddly impersonal experience, but the people who run it nonetheless felt entitled to add a 20% tip in by default. Seeing a more conventional ramen place just outside, I wondered if I'd come to the right spot, but comparing the reviews suggests to me that I did. Here, they offer one vegan option, and the green curry I ordered held some intrigue. I like it when places do something more with their menu than just make it "the vegetarian one". Green curry is a favorite of mine and not that easy to find without some animal products in it. And I'm sure there are non-vegetarians who like green curry too. The mix of vegetables was quite pleasant, and the curry green indeed, but what really completed it was the chili crisp I added on the side, which did clear the sinuses. But while it was a tasty bowl of ramen, it was close to $25 for a small bowl without any protein (they also charge a bit on top of that for takeout), in a place that offered no real service and didn't even bring me a water. This is some of the most authentic Ramen I have had in the US. Very rich and hearty broth, ample amounts of noodles, and a nice set of toppings including a nice fatty pork shoulder in the pork options (Tonkotsu and Hellfire, aka very spicy Tonkotsu). I would definitely recommend if you like Ramen, even more so if you like craft beer, as they are a full time "pop up" inside Bearded Iris in Sylvan supply now. Let's get the potential negatives out of the way real quick, as this is what I have seen some complaints on the place. 1. It is a separate business in Bearded Iris, so you end up with two bills: one for the food, one for the beer. 2. Ordering is online only. I find this pretty neat as you use your phone to order and pay and they deliver it. 3. A service charge is automatically added. This is to ensure the employees make something without you having to think about it, but it bothers some people, including one of my friends 4. No reservations. The place gets crowded. It was already somewhat popular as Bearded Iris, but Black Dynasty just ups the game a bit. 5. The menu is limited. Not a huge deal, but there are only a couple of types of Ramen on a given day, with specials on some days. When they are open, you should be able to check online and see what is available (order to go or grab a seat and order). 6. Other than a cucumber based salad, there are no vegetarian options. First time, I had the Hellfire. I find it very warm, but my friends will tell you I have the ability to handle a lot of heat. I would say for an average person it is quite hot. For the spice adverse, it is hellfire. As for the Ramen itself, it is wonderful. Second, I had the Tonkotsu, which is a fairly standard Ramen (the hellfire is based on this with a different tare (seasoning sauce) and a lot of peppers). Tonkotsu is on point as well. I added some pepper flakes to give it a bit more kick, but that rolls back to comments on hellfire. I have not tried the garlic bomb, but one of my friends thinks it is the best they have. It is Chintan (chicken) not Tonkotsu (pork). They have also added a Shoyu (soy sauce) Chintan since the first time I was there (and did a Turkey based Ramen during Thanksgiving time). Salad and a chicken appetizer round things out - have not tried either, so I can't review. For pairing options, if Bearded Iris still has the rice lager on tap, you should consider it with the Ramen, as it works very nicely. For Hellfire, you can go a bit more bold with one of their hoppier IPAs. TL;DR - Best Ramen in Nashville. Inside a great brewery, so there are some nice craft beer options. The Hellfire is hella hot (not too bad for me, but the rest of the crew was on fi-ya), tonkotsu very traditional. Also, chicken options if you are not into pork. Both of my thumbs are up. read more
