Overall: fun menu, diverse beer selection, okay food, okay service, typical pub ambiance with single stall inclusive bathrooms I called and asked for a reservation on a Saturday. They told me they couldn't between 5 and 6 because they were slammed. Listening to this advice we went at 4. We were the only people in there and when we left at 5:30 there was only one table of people eating in the whole place. A little annoying to change our plans for faulty info. The menu looks interesting but it all just comes out okay. We got a bunch of small plates for the table to share. I enjoyed the Kobe hot dog and duck confit sliders. I would definitely not recommend the pork belly tacos. read more

bluf - Black Gryphon has a lot of great ideas on the menu and a large, interesting tap list to boot. That said, execution fell pretty short and the dishes felt pretty underwhelming as a whole. Black Gryphon offers an elevated bar/pub environment with cool concepts for appetizers and entrees. I thought the kobe dog and ants climbing a tree apps were tasty, but unfortunately felt pretty underwhelmed by the wings, duck confit open-faced burgers, and the pork belly tacos. The flavors kind of landed 2-dimensional. Our server was very nice and accommodating, but it was also weird because there was only one server that I saw for the entire restaurant, so I don't know if the experience would've been different if they were busy that day (there were maybe 2 tables total that we were there). All in all, it's an okay spot. Lots of cool ideas that have a lot of potential, but didn't quite hit the mark for me. read more

There has been a restaurant in this location for quite awhile. Many years ago it was the Hilltop Restaurant, and in more recent years, The Black Gryphon. If I understand my history correctly, it may have burned down awhile back and was closed for some time. Now, recently reopened, it is worth a try. Four of us stopped in a little before 6 pm on a Thursday night for dinner. We waited a bit to be seated, long enough that we asked if we were to seat ourselves. The ambiance where we were seated was acceptable, but not special. The service was a little slow (but still good when it happened). The cocktail menu offered many great options. The Queen Anne's Revenge was delicious. All 4 of us agreed that the food was quite well prepared and delicious. We decided to pass on desserts, but I would expect those to be of similar quality. Overall, certainly worth trying, if you are in the area. read more

This place had great reviews and was recommended by a friend. Unfortunately we had a pretty lackluster experience. The place was super empty on a Saturday night, and the host also ended up being our server as well as the bartender. Probably because of this, service was super slow. The entire experience had an "off" feeling, like the entire usual staff was gone and the place was entirely filled with substitute teachers. Food was ok, drinks were meh to ok. This place deserves more notoriety! It has great food, craft beer, and super people. We had a larger group and they quickly set up an area to serve and accommodate our team. We had many of their special creations and we enjoyed every one! Their gryphon-phoenix burger was really unusual. It had plantains, honey, and spicy sauce that has chocolate in it. We went to the Black Gryphon for a private dinner party during Valentine's weekend. Food and service was great plus having a private area for all of us to talk was perfect. We really enjoyed the prime rib lasagna. Kudos to the staff for doing such a great job on a busy weekend and making it look easy. read more

Fish and chips here actually tied the best I ever had which were previously In London England. The breading is light and thin and there was no grease in the breading or fish. Beer selection is top notch. The Ramen was enjoyed by my company. read more

This was a really weird experience that I'm going to blame on the pandemic. Arriving at Black Gryphon, the door is locked and there's a sign to ring for entry. It was around 7 pm. Someone answers the door and we ask for a table for 2. Inside, the dining room is empty and there were some loud people in the bar. Or maybe the sound is echoing because the dining room was empty. We were taken into a back room that was freezing cold to be seated. Our server was super attentive and nice. He explained that their menu had just changed for the season. We had wings- they were excellent. Very fresh tasting and cooked perfectly. I had a glass of sangria and the hot Italian chicken sandwich, which was indescribably delicious. And the chicken breast was huge. My hubs had the ramen and I guess he didn't notice it was a small plate. read more

I'm a picky eater so I was definitely a bit cautious with some of the menu items, but this small plate of meatballs and whipped potatoes was out of this world. I was half tempted to order one to go. Also had their version of an orange crush cocktail. That was a let down and for $14 barely filled the wine glass it was served in, but their tap list is impressive. Not sure what happened but it was just not a good experience. We had made reservations but told them we might come early, that is our fault for coming in earlier I guess. The waiter was very agitated we came when we did, there was one other table. Put us in a corner and forgot about us for 20 minutes. The other table got drink orders, cocktails, menu orders and their apps. That's fine we thought he just could not multi task, it happens. He was very abrupt and borderline hostile to us. Threw coasters, literally spun them on the table at us. Never came to ask how we were doing. Food was subpar, Welsh rarebit was very gritty. Another table came in and he spent 20 minutes being their best friend, I was in disbelief. We waited another 10 minutes on top of the 20 to get our check. We were just done. If you go here don't request anything or ask for anything but simple service. It's a good idea and menu looks really great-just not quite executed. read more

I passed this restaurant multiple times the last few years, coming down to work an annual conference. This year I finally managed to arrive with time and friends resigned to indulge my need to find interesting restaurants. The decor is nice, the beer list diverse, the menu has interesting options. It's a darn shame I couldn't get any service. Forty minutes after getting seated we left. No one stopped at our table. The website touts the "slow food" movement, and that's cool, but if you can't manage to come take a drink order, there's a problem. One of my companions has an anxiety issue and didn't want to do anything confrontational, but frankly it's not my job to flag down waitstaff anyway. In particular when the adjacent table was visited three times by waitstaff before we left--making it very difficult for me to believe no one knew we were sitting there still unserved. Seems like a great little place. I don't know what happened this time. I hope people get good experiences here in future. I got a seven year backlog of letdown. read more

What a hidden Gem! The food is 5 Star worthy, we had Wachos and Pierogis with Stwmp (look it up) and they were to die for! The cocktails were delicious and the beer selection huge! We also Thai marinated Philly Cheese Steak and the Gryphoenix Buger (peanut butter, honey, plaintains and choclate hot sauce.) Everything was super delicous. Ate dinner here in December with my cousin and her husband on a Friday night before a concert. Service was prompt and helpful. I asked to leave peas out of my entree and our server said he would ask for that. However, when my order came, the peas were there. But it turned out not to be a, problem, because they were fresh and tasty. This is a farm -to-table oriented restaurant and the fresh peas in Dec proved it. read more

This is not a place for everyone for the fare is local fresh not a chain type restaurant. If you are willing to experience new and unique food I recommend you try the Black Gryphon. Drinks are also exceptional again not your local bar type libations. Staff is friendly but being everything is prepared fresh it takes a while for you order to arrive but it is hot and good! Enjoy the atmosphere and relax a while. During this time of isolation due to the Coronavirus it has been my pleasure to order takeout from the Black Gryphon many times. Meals have always been the quality that I have come to expect and the friendliness of the staff have been exceptional. I was very excited to go here only to be served raw fish... When I brought it to the waiters attention my plate was taken away and I was not offered anything to replace the undercooked fish. Nor were we compensated with a discount or dessert. They have a great idea of local grown and seasonal menu changes. The food is also very unique and delicious. Got the kimchi fries with an egg on top for an appetizer, was worried about the kimchi possibly being sub-par but it was delicious as was the whole dish. Got a house salad with the meal, the 5 herb dressing was incredible. For the main I got the Wachos with salsa. Boyfriend got the daily special with pork, spaghetti noodles, and bulgogi (forgot the name of the dish). Absolutely delicious!! I really cant give enough praise for the food. Stopped in after golf. My two companions chose 'ordinary' food (burger, fish and chips). But I stuck my neck out a bit and ordered the Thai Fire Marinated Philly Cheese Steak BG Style, that included 'fire chili marinated prime rib' and garlic-habanero powder (plus other stuff) - hoping it wouldn't be too spicy. It was not too spicy; it was perfect. I highly recommend it. And the service was outstanding. read more

I think we've been coming here since this restaurant opened years ago . . . first, we're so impressed with how they've handled the pandemic and safety practices. There are no concerns here. Their menus changes frequently. There are daily specials too--whatever is ripe, local and at the peak of freshness, you'll find it here. It's a bit of an adventure, and we appreciate that. It's a "local" bar too. By the end of an evening they will know your name and remember you when you return. Tonight it was a combo of small plates--my comfort food--Caesar salad, featured pizza, and red wine. But do know, Wednesday is Dan Dan noodle night. SPICY and oh so good. My last visit was local, foraged Paw Paw Gelato. We'll keep coming back, and you should give it a try. You won't be disappointed! read more

I had no idea what to expect- the Boilio is a homemade whiskey drink served warm and spiced- delicious! The rum punch snuck up on me. I highly recommend the Welsh rarebit- rich and great quality cheddar . We shared the iceberg wedge with crispy lardons of local bacon and a delicious Stilton dressing. Not all overdone but we loved it. The fish bites and fish were moist and perfect. I confess we dipped our fries in the Welsh rarebit! Amazingly overpriced food, small menu with hardly anything on it, and very average service. I didn't drink so I can't comment on the beers offered but the food needs serious help. Wonderful, inventive menu. Specials were actually special. The fish and chips are divine. There was a fab spicy squid noodle appetizer which was delicious. We also tried a duck confit small plate special. It was AMAZING and served with risotto and bitter greens. We were shocked when we got the bill....the GENEROUS portioned small plate was ONLY $8. For lighter appetites, this would be a meal! Exceptional beer selection with unique rotating beers on draft. I've seen reviews stating this place is over priced...we disagree. My daughter and I dined here on Sunday evening (10/13). Here are the pro's and con's. The pro's: Very friendly service, our Brussels sprout appetizer was very good. We shared a desert of carrot cake with caramel topping which also was very good. The con's: We both ordered the rib steak, both of our steaks were very tough and had too much bristle. I never ate here before the fire because we moved to etown the day it burned down but we were excited to try it once it reopened. They did a great job with the renovation, it was a tad more "fancy" of a place than I expected judging by the outside. Fun selection of beer on tap, we like that's it's all local to PA. We had a burger and a crab cake sandwich, thoroughly enjoyed both. The reason for 4 stars is slow service. It started out fine but got progressively worse. We had to wait for our check for about 15 minutes. Also there is a 3% service fee for credit cards which is honestly ridiculous in this day and age. We came out to Elizabethtown for the Stone Gables Christmas lights. Prior to taking the drive out, we looked up some small local restaurants and decided on Black Gryphon. The menu is very specialized with unique combinations that you can't find anywhere else.
