I genuinely hate to write bad reviews. But as I am sitting here paying a $400 hospital bill, I feel the review is necessary. My family and I were visiting from out of town. My son has a severe gluten allergy and we came here as I saw they had gluten free pancakes. I informed the waitress of my son's allergy when we placed our order, and confirmed that his pancakes were gluten free when they were brought to our table. Being a normal 5 year old who loves pancakes, my baby enjoyed his breakfast... only to begin coughing intensely and then breaking out into severe hives (and panicking) shortly thereafter. By God's grace, we had his epi Pen nearby. We still ended up in the ER as his breathing was impacted in addition to the hives (thankfully the epi pen helped but he still had to receive treatment and be monitored). All of this was due to pancakes that we were told were gluten free. While my husband and I rushed our son to the hospital, my father who is a local resident, spoke with management. They comped our meal, which was kind. But this truly could have been a life or death situation. read more

Prices were, not cave creek. Happy Groovy Hour, 3-6pm... includes $4 drafts, $5 wines. The bar is huge, theres a lot of choice for drink, draft, beers, wine and food too. The buffalo wings smelt amazing when i walked in. Although both businesses are together, the bar area is decorated completely different and very comfortable to sit in, in a cold raining night. That night, 2 guitarists were giving a great performance, not too loud for a small venue, they took requests and played really well. Decided to treat myself to a solo breakfast out since I was in the area. Super cute diner with a great patio with lots of seating. We took a cozy table outside near the back by an outside heater which was nice because I forgot my jacket and it was a bit chilly outside. My husband and I heard the most incredible music from across the parking lot. We were heading to Keelers Steakhouse but decided to go to Black Mountain Cafe instead. There was a group of musicians just having such a good time, just playing acoustic guitars. The music was spectacular and the musicians so friendly. We ordered dinner, sliders and two salads, so good. The waiter, Connor (also a bartender), was so funny, courteous, and attentive. We had several cocktails and the price was incredibly reasonable! INCREDIBLE! In my 62 years I have eaten out often in 22 states and 17 countries. Never had what happened today at Black Mountain happened. And what happened was really bad! My party of four and a lsweet and quiet less than 2 week old baby were THROWN OUT! Why? The Drinks were OK, but we had send the Margarita back and it was MUCH better the second try. I ordered a Burger with Onion rings, which were not an upgrade which is unusual, but it came out a 'few' onion rings and the rest waffle fries as they ran out(?). I do NOT eat potato fries. So after I mentioned that, they brought me Sweet Potato fries, which I do like...... They are trying hard and made it right. Black mountain cafe is always a good choice for a brunch. My husband, MIL, and I came for brunch after Pat's run for some grub. It was a bit confusing with the outdoor seating because it's first come first serve but no one is really directing and we seemed to go during a rush. I'd recommend still having the hostesses direct people where to sit especially on the weekends during busy times. I ordered the breakfast burrito, my brunch go to. It was delicious and filling. The salsa also added some needed freshness. Next time I'll probably order hashbrowns instead of the home fries but the peppers and onions were good. My husband had pancakes and it was the perfect carbo loading for him. My MIL ordered the avocado toast and hashbrowns with her egg scrambled - it also looked delicious! We made the BIG mistake of coming here for a birthday party. First they gave our reserved table away even though we showed up 15 minutes early. It looked like they got a larger group than ours, so they just gave the table away. Then they stuck us by the front cash register, the front door and the coffee bar that had a loud coffee grinder. But the worst part was being told the food would take a half hour - - -when they knew it would really be AN HOUR AND 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE FOOD WAS READY. We were starving. When we asked how much longer it would be, instead of offering us some pasteries they had, they kept saying 10 to 15 more minutes. So we sat for almost 2 hours with people coming and out the bumped into our chairs, and with cold air coming in when the door was opened. Their coffee grinder was next to our table I looked around and saw a lot of other people who didn't have their food but had also been there a long time. I finally left but my friends stayed. When we talked to the manager or owner she was rude to us, and acted like we should be more patient! Also I looked up the reviews around the time we went and there were also bad reveiws. The service was decent, the food was ok - not bad but definitely nothing to write home about. The bill came and they use those mobile kiosks to allow you to pay. I didn't bother to look at the bill because [again] we were chatting. I clicked the 20% tip button and went on my way. My mistake not asking for a receipt. Mine was not bad the potatoes were delicious and I liked the salsa but thought it was odd the black beans were served on the side with unmelted shredded cheese. I think it would be better if they got rid of the side of tortillas and instead had more of the crunchy tostada layered with the black beans and cheese melted. But not bad at all! Man.... I struggle leaving bad reviews. I love supporting local small business and I know how hard it is to do it. But this was probably the worst, most expensive breakfast we have had in the year we have lived in Arizona. I really would not recommend this place unless massive changes are made. The coffee was good, but that's about it. My one child ordered pancakes and they were so dry if you tried to fold it in half it cracked like cardboard. My other child asked if she could have the steak and eggs which she never orders but we said what the heck and let her get it. The steak was probably about 4 or 6 oz. We asked for medium, it was super well done. Zero red on the inside and tough. Her scrambled eggs were soft and runny. The hash browns were good but probably only about two table spoons worth. I ordered their "grubstake". The chicken fried steak actually tasted pretty good. Again the hash brown portion was paltry - almost like it was deliberately measured out to be about two table spoons serving. I asked for my eggs poached - they came out soft boiled. My wife ordered their cinnamon roll. It was probably the best thing we ordered - the icing was super sweet to the point that my teeth ached while eating it but if you are into that sort of thing I would say go for it. The service was honestly not good at all. We sat outside and it felt like our waitress was hiding inside the whole time. I need to go inside three times to find her - first to ask if I could have the eggs remade, second to ask for to go cups for the coffee, and third to get the check. In the end, with tip, it was a $125 breakfast. Too much money and the quality just really isn't there. Maybe it's a new cook, new staff, or an off day. Regardless, not coming back. read more

It's saddens me to submit this review, however it is something the owners need to resolve. Been going to this restaurant for many years as we live in the Carefree area. Always want to support the local business establishments yet this place is dropping the ball. The service at this café this time of year is below standards likely due to the immense number of out-of-towners that invade our town. Regardless, we've been to this restaurant three times in the last two weeks and walked out all three times. They don't acknowledge you when you show up and then don't even provide you a menu you have to get your own menu, your own silverware, etc. I don't think this is what the owners expected or anticipated. Food is still pretty decent, but the service has dropped immensely. I worked in this industry years ago and I will always give the servers at a restaurant or break, but this is something that need to address before it gets worse. Plenty of spots inside and on the patio but since it was a hot day, we chose to sit indoors. For drinks, I got an iced tea (their seasonal, a prickly pear green tea) and my friend got an iced latte. Love that they are served in large mason jars! For food, I ordered their French toast and my friend got their cinnamon roll. We received our plates fairly quickly and enjoyed our choices. The French Toast was three pieces, so cut in half it was six and I did not finish them but they were good! Our waitress was kind enough to give us to go cups, and filled mine with fresh iced tea which was very thoughtful. Prices were fair and this was a great spot for breakfast! Where do I start. We came without a reservation with a party of 10. Even though they were very busy they went out of their way to accommodate. The food was amazing!!!
