We then asked to speak directly with the manager of Mandarin Garden. The manager never came to our table. Not once. Instead, other employees were repeatedly sent out to argue with us while the manager remained in the back. The final response? We were told we had to pay for the entrée we had each taken ONE bite of or they would call the police. Seriously. We weren't refusing to pay for a meal we'd eaten. We hadn't eaten it. We immediately reported the problem and offered to order and pay for another entrée. We simply didn't believe we should be charged for food that was returned after two bites because of its taste, texture, and quality. What could have been solved in about 30 seconds with, "I'm sorry you didn't like it. Let's get you something else," turned into one of the worst 1-hour restaurant customer-service experiences I've had. Bad food can happen at any restaurant. This place is my go-to for fresh sushi that isn't drowning in rice, authentic Chinese food (like duck, etc) on their "hidden" blue menu, and the standard more Americanized flavors like sweet-and-sour and teriyaki chicken, etc. I saw a couple of reviews that their rolls were small, and admittedly, in comparison to some of the restaurants in Cache Valley where their rolls are that are 2/3 rice and 1/3 fish, yes, they are. I personally hate those gigantic rolls because it feels like I have to excavate my way to any flavors unless it's drenched in sauces, which then get all over my face in an attempt to get even 1/4 of the roll into my mouth. Having had the chance to actually visit Japan and eat the sushi there, Black Pearl is right on the nose. Most of their rolls you can get into your mouth with a single bite, and there is a beautiful balance between fish and rice, so you don't have to overcome one to get to the other. Then again, my favorite rolls are always the California and Philly for the simple flavors and balanced sizes. The "hidden" menu has to die for duck soup and house soup, along with many more things I haven't had the opportunity to try yet. (I'm only adventurous when I don't want one of my regular favorites.) As for the Americanized flavors, those are always right on target too. There's a teriyaki salmon lunch combo where there's a tiny crisp on the outside, and succulent fish on the inside that makes your mouth water (if you like salmon). Their orange chicken is always crispy without being so greasy and heave-laden that you feel like you need a fork-lift to carry you out. For the food you get, and the price you pay, I feel the value is there. The atmosphere is something that is calm and unless Black Pearl is really busy, always relaxing to sit and be able to talk with a friend of family member that I bring there. It didn't take them long at all to get the sushi done and once it was brought out the presentation was outstanding, it looked like all the other sushi rolls. I grabbed the sushi and put it all in my mouth and automatically my taste buds screamed with happiness because the combination of flavors spoke out to me. The texture was also really similar and it reminded me of biting into a chicken nuggets because it has a couple crunch spots and a couple soft spots. I definitely would recommend this spider sushi roll from black pearl. It's super good and I would definitely buy it again. It was also cheap which is always the best way to go. I believe it was almost $6 for a decent size roll of the spider sushi. Although, if you're a person who doesn't like deep fried crab or any other of the ingredients that it has, I would still recommend getting sushi there and ask the waiter or waitress what sushi roll would be a top pick for you and I'm sure you would enjoy it as much as I did. read more

Absolutely Fantastic Experience! I had an amazing meal at this Chinese restaurant! The food was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked -- every dish was delicious, from the appetizers to the main courses. You can really taste the quality and care that goes into their cooking. The service was outstanding -- friendly, attentive, and fast without being rushed. The staff made sure everything was just right and checked in at all the right times. Also, major shoutout for how clean and well-kept the bathrooms were. That says a lot about how seriously they take their standards across the board. My most favorite restaurant in cache valley. Be sure to request the "other menu" (there is literally a different authentic Chinese menu that offers others items not on the main menu). The best dishes I've had there are jalapeño pork and 3 cup chicken. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. We go at least twice a month. read more
