I don't know why I waited so long to try this place. Went on a Saturday with no wait we were seated. Our server Mykia was so helpful. She explained the cooking process and offered to have it cooked for us if we preferred. I figured I was here to cook so let's do this! I ordered steak and lamb chops and my partner ordered steak and lobster tail. Mykia asked how I liked mine cooked. When I told her I liked it Mid Rare she suggested I cook them for 35 seconds on each side. It was the perfect amount of time. The meat was so tender and the butter you cook it in was full of flavor. I even cooked my green beans and potatoes on the rock! I sliced the steak thinly; each bite was hot and cooked the way I liked! The sides were large enough to share. Host stand was vacant first time we went in, but it was mid day and mostly empty, so they probably had made cuts early in. We decided to go back in, were seated quickly, and ordered the $8.99 soup and grilled cheese dipper special. It was more food than we thought and was really tasty for a mall restaurant! The bartender was decent and gave me half off the app I got anyway cause I'm not going out there. There were maybe 8 folks throughout the whole restaurant and he acted like he was overwhelmed. Bringing our tabs at the bar when I just got my appetizer. When I told and showed him that it was oily n greasy as all heck he said that it made a good snack for later. Told him I love dry martinis and he said he wouldn't recommend. That means u don't know how to make a martini to me. He tries to steer me towards the sugary mixed drinks. If someone likes martinis why would u try to get them to drink that? Food and service at this location does not measure up to the Michigan locations.I've had sandwiches, lobster dip, spinach dip n my man did the cook your own steak deal. I'm 50/50 on this one. The lobster dip was good, but it wasn't significantly better than others I've had which doesn't make it worth the higher price for me. That being said the bread that came with it was delicious! It was crispy and we'll seasoned, and I would honestly take that as an appetizer by itself. My "Ghost Pepper Burger" was less spicy than a Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich, and the meat was under seasoned. My fries arrived cold, I was able to salvage them thanks to my fiance getting the steak on the black rock, but really? I have to heat up my "freshly" made fries? The steak on the black rock was okay, but not great, and it's purposefully not seasoned so you can do it yourself. If you're in the right mood that's great, just keep that in mind. The baked potato was a generous size and pretty good! The servers were all friendly and very attentive. Overall the biggest issue is the food just didn't live up to the price. We have been to this location two times before and it was great! We went over this past weekend and it was horrible. Service was extremely slow with no sense of urgency from anyone. Our waiter was all on his own for our table of 18 people. He was very nice and stayed calm the entire time. When one of our friends asked to speak to the manager (quietly) the manager turned defensive and rude immediately. She was very condescending and unprofessional. Never apologizing for anything. We were there for over 3 hours. Appetizer plates came out filthy and a server dropped a knife and put it back into the silverware she was rolling. Someone at our table was going back and fourth with the manager which I don't condone but the manager had to he held back by her employees, she was so in appropriate and laughed loudly throughout the restaurant the whole way back toward the bar/kitchen. The birthday we were there celebrating her never even got his food and then at the very end when we were all paying our messed up bills, the manager brought his food out in a to go bag. My mom taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all! But per usual I'm not heeding the advice. This was the WORST dining experience I've had in a long time! The sides we ordered were not complicated and were likely made in batch quantities, mac n cheese and a baked sweet potato and the other sides at the table were cream corn (tasted like it was fresh out of a tin can) and some French fries that were from frozen. For the life of me I can not figure out what took 55 minutes! Let me back up (slowly) to our appetizer, so when I order soft pretzels I'm thinking I'll be getting one of three things- traditional shaped pretzels or pretzel "breadsticks" or pretzel bites. These were cut up like a toddler's hotdog. And the waitress just dumped it off without explaining the hot rock concept. Glad I'm already familiar. That proceeded to sit there for 45 minutes of our 55 minute wait. And if you haven't been there please understand hot rock = hot sweaty dining experience. I get the rock should be hot to heat the food- but when the food is gone take the rock! My mom got a side of mushrooms in a red wine/burgundy sauce, but no way to deliver it from the hot rock to her plate since they never brought her a spoon. Anytime we needed anything we had to flag down a bus boy or a random server. Our actual waitress came for our appetizer and drink order then disappeared for 15 minutes before getting our dinner order. Final straw for me was having my steak cut by the waitress with it barely being cooked, I'm talking still completely raw on the side facing up. Anyone who knows anything about cooking steak knows it should NEVER be cut until it rests!!!! So I ended up with a dry piece of steak without my chosen creamy horseradish sauce because they messed up and brought me casino butter. Oh remember my raw steak that the waitress cut (without asking me)??? Yeah, she then handed it back to me to continue to use! Yep raw meat folks with the same utensils. Ughhhhh. Don't get me started. I actually opted not to eat my steak since I couldn't get clean cutlery. It's now sitting in a box waiting to be eaten. I also would have loved an opportunity to season my steak prior to the waitress starting the cooking process and cutting my meat like I'm a child. I hope you don't need handicap seating! The only options for seating are booths- no bueno with major mobility issues or high tops which are entirely impossible for someone with a broken femur and a cane. I don't anticipate this restaurant making it a whole lot longer. Toledo has a fantastic culinary scene and this place is just a messy spectacle. Don't expect it to compare to their Michigan location, because it doesn't even come close. read more

If you enjoy The Melting Pot, then you should like Black Rock Bar & Grill. Both establishments are expensive and labor intensive, and, they're both quite a bit of fun. Food: Just in case you didn't already know this, at Black Rock, you cook your own steak (or seafood, or chicken) on an 8" x 8" x 1" BLACK ROCK cooking stone that the waiter brings to your place at the table. The stone was preheated to about 750 degrees Fahrenheit, and although I didn't have a calorimeter in my pocket, it seemed to retain its heat well enough for me to get through my meal. The filet (8 oz) was a great cut; it was completely devoid of anything other than tender muscle from that poor cow's psoas major...no gristle and minimal fat. The waiter provided me with instruction on how to "grill" it to a perfect medium well. I wasn't sure how smoothly it was going to go, but I ended up loving it! I added some andouille to the order for an extra 5 bucks; it was worth it. The wife ordered the seafood lover's combo. This consisted of a 6 oz tuna steak, a couple scallops, and some shrimp. She loved it. Sometimes, I've noticed, dipping sauces that come with your entrée are meant to cover up the taste of an inferior cut of beef/fish. Black Rock's sauces only ENHANCE, greatly, the flavors. Drinks: BRB&G, at least the store in Toledo, has a comprehensive list of draft beer that should please the palate of most beer lovers; best of all, most of the offerings are from either Ohio or Michigan. That's right coastal troglodytes, we brew some good shit around here. The bartender went .500 with my wife...the "Magic Potion" was a bust, but the cucumber mint concoction was a huge hit. Atmosphere: BRB&G reminds me of The Melting Pot, only it's not quite as dark/intimate. It gets CROWDED...the first time we tried to eat here, we were confronted with a 2.5 hour wait. Fuhgedaboudit. This time we went for a late lunch/early dinner (about 3 pm) and got seated immediately, but by the time we left, the place was starting to get busy. I'll also say that by the time we left, our clothing did smell a little. It smelled like we had been sitting around a table, oh, I don't know...cooking steak on black rocks, maybe? It was noticeable, but wasn't THAT pungent. However, it occurred to me that if the place had been full of MANY people cooking MANY steaks on MANY black rocks... Price: Expensive, but not out of line with any other good steakhouse in the area. And yes, obviously you are paying for the gimmick of using the cooking stone at your table, but still, it was fun. Service: Our service was friendly, attentive, and comprehensive. The four of us (man, woman, boy, girl) weren't in any hurry, and that's probably the right mindset for BRB&G...service wasn't slow, but there was some lag time. Been here and other locations several times. My wife and kid love the steak and the opportunity to be able to cook it the way they like it. The soups and sides are always excellent. I can not eat steak so I gravitate towards chicken. The last three times the chopstick chicken come out cold. This last time it sat in the window for 15 min and the when it arrived it was cold and the rice was dry and terrible looking. They offered to make me a new one but at this point I'm tired of not being able to eat with my family and just end up taking home a $16 meal to eat as a leftover out of the microwave. It's sad a restaurant of this caliber can't seem to cook chicken. As a person in customer service I find it odd that a manger wouldn't be curious why food is going back to the kitchen. I ordered dinner for my family tonight. I ordered the fish and chips with the New England clam chowder. Firstly, the clam chowder was watery and the only way I could differentiate it from Campbells was the fact that the potato chunks were quite large. It was disappointing. The fries were decent. The fish was one big piece and the breading slipped right off. It was disappointing. Also ordered the Philly cheesesteak for my wife. She said it was fine. No complaints other than being small for the price. Also ordered the honey mustard chicken wrap. My daughter finished half. She really enjoyed the sweet potato fries with the caramel like dipping sauce. I paid about $50 with a $4 tip. In my opinion that's over priced for what we got in terms of portion and taste. If we are to pay gourmet prices for bar food then I expect to be given high quality dishes in terms of taste and ingredients. I feel like they could definitely improve the quality of the dishes for the price. But because my wife and daughter seemed ok with what they got. 3 stars. read more

Not only were there mouse droppings underneath my table and knats flying around and landing on our plates but the presentation of our food was absolutely distateful and looked as if someone was eating off our plates. When asked to speak with a manager he was very rude and laughed at our complaints. He never once apologized for our horrible dining experience nor offered us any alternatives. Everything was very expensive for the quality we were given. We waited an hour to get salads and soup. Then another half an hour for steaks that we had to cook ourselves (they didn't have to do anything as the meat is cooked at the table on the rock). Drink refills were a rarity and when bringing out food there were items missing. The best part of the meal was the side. The meat we ordered that was cooked in the kitchen had no flavor at all and I was charged extra for having butter and bacon on a baked potato (not sure what the business thinks comes on a baked potato). Our appetizer was brought out cold, our dinner had cold rocks which had to be replaced and our fries and potatoes were ice cold. When our soup was brought out our waitress put the hot soup right in front of our baby daughter which she could have grabbed/touched and seriously hurt herself. Our waitress was cold to us the entire night and rarely checked on us. We had to ask another waitress to get our waters refilled. To top it all off while we were still eating she brought us boxes and the check and didn't say anything our ask for dessert. Just an overall awful experience at a restaurant we love to visit.
