We went again on Saturday. WOW! Started with a Martini for my dining partner and iced tea for me. Both were great. The waiter (Josh, a five-star waiter if ever there was one) really knows how to take care of his customers. He really knows the menu, can explain the dishes along with their components and what makes them unique and paces each course perfectly. He even asked if we were BOTH done before any dishes were removed from the table. Nothing looks worse than one person still eating while the rest of the table has no plates in front of them. We started with the roasted carrot salad. The carrots were perfectly roasted and chilled with and amazing tahini "paste" and radicchio, perfectly dressed with a lemon vinaigrette. OUTSTANDING!!! Seriously, this could have been my entire meal! The tahini paste is great, and I made it once while making a tahini dressing for roasted Brussels sprouts. Tahini naturally gets thick (paste like) when liquid is added. To make the paste, just stop adding liquid to it and stop mixing until it gets smooth again. Seriously, delicious. We both ordered the chicken schnitzel for our entrees. It comes with a really nice side salad consisting of mixed greens, dressed again with a very mild vinaigrette. My only quibble (and it's a really small one) is I would have liked the schnitzel to be a bit thinner. That said, it was perfectly cooked, not at all dry and the thickness is up to the creator of the dish. I don't think there's a "standard" for this (ha, ha - get it!). Great breading and very tasty. The dessert... Again, had to go with the sticky toffee pudding! If this is on the menu, there's no way I'm not going to order it. GOD, it's just a perfect ending to a great meal, well, that along with a pot of French Press coffee. All in all, the meal came to $108.00 excluding the tip. Expensive, but WORTH EVERY PENNY! I spent that much a few weeks ago (maybe more) on a really awful meal/experience at a different place. You'll have to read my old reviews to figure that one out! Anyway, this place treats their employees like they actually appreciate them. They took them on a cruise! Of all the restaurants I used to work at, the best thing I ever received was a shift meal or maybe a cold beer because I was still at the place cooking apps at 1:00 in the morning and the manager wanted to go home but felt bad because I couldn't leave. Thanks for the glass of Miller Lite draft, Mr. Chi-Chi's manager guy! Everyone in the place, from the servers to the hostesses, to the bus folks and the floor manager had smiles and a sense of graciousness and appreciation to each and every customer. Try to find that at any other restaurant in Toledo. The food is top notch, made with very unique recipes and techniques you're not going to find anywhere else. The dining room and restrooms (at least the men's) are clean. I never had to ask for a refill on my iced tea or water. New silverware was brought before each course was served. The old plates were removed from the table after the staff asked if it was OK to do so. Proper training in procedure and etiquette is obvious. Again, just a great meal in every way - 10 out of 10! We loved the Standard after visit #1. Then, somehow, a year and a half passed before we returned. The reason was location, and the reason was atmosphere, but mostly it was atmosphere. After visit #2, I'm not sure there will be a visit #3 anytime soon. The consensus among friends -- confirmed now by our own table -- is that everything is too heavy. The first few bites bring the oohs and the ahhs. By halfway through the plate, the ughs and the oofs begin. The menu reads as thoughtful and dialed in. Our table of four ordered very different entrees -- seafood, steak, pasta, salad -- and somehow every plate arrived at the same destination: rich, savory, dense. No acid. No brightness. And strangely, blue cheese and garlic had crept into every single bite, as if the kitchen could not bear to let a dish leave without them. A meal that should have pleased everyone left most of us with a mild remorse. I felt surprisingly ill for hours afterward -- not because anything was unsafe, not because it wasn't delicious, but because it was simply too much. Too rich. Too savory. The body, it turns out, asks for contrast, and we had not been given any. The service, on the other hand, is STILL outrageously good. Without question some of the best in the region -- better than nearly every higher-end room in town. But the atmosphere is stuffy, the food is one-note, and high quality is not the same thing as good execution. My wife's "medium plus" steak arrived extremely rare. My salmon was undercooked. Came for a birthday so this was his choice. I did make a reservation and noted the celebration. Seated right away with the server verbally telling us the specials. I personally like to see it on paper so I can view ingredients but Im going with the flow. The service is a stand out here. Started with garlic bread bites. Server indicated there is a light blue cheese drizzle that they actually drizzle at the table. Neither of us are big fans of blue cheese and made sure to tell her when she started. She said its very mild n not overpowering. It was not mild n it was overpowering. I love love bread n I only ate one square. French onion soup was good per the man. I wanted the chicken special but when I said Ididn't care for peppers the server said she didn't recommend it then. Not sure why peppers couldn't be removed? but I took her advice and chose shrimp instead. Shrimp n mashed potatoes for me. Lamb chops n some type of potatoes for him. It was fine. At the price point($200 for 2) I was expecting more than fine. They did bring him a bday dessert but as she stated they don't sing happy birthday. Ok then. Only my second time here- always good food. Our waitress was nice. Staff are always friendly but not too professional / friendly where it seems fake which i find refreshing. Gave a 4 star because my food wasn't that hot coming out- seems like it sat for a tad before getting brought out. Also lacked any flavor definitely needed some salt / seasoning. Still good even with not being hot! Also the table next to us had their phone propped up on FaceTime out loud so that did take away from my experience not that the restaurant is at fault for that. Would definitely be back but this is higher scale so pricing reflects that expect to spend $50+ a person depending what you get! read more

This was my second visit to The Standard, this time for an early Holiday meal. We had reservations for two and were promptly seated in a booth as requested. I hadn't realized before that there is a large room to the right of the bar area. We were there for a somewhat early dinner at 6pm on a Saturday and the place was bustling! Definitely make a reservation. (I used Open Table online two or three weeks in advance and it was very easy.) We were greeted shortly after being seated and our server advised us of the special entrees after taking our drink orders. We decided to split the roasted beet salad which also came with herbed goat cheese. Our server brought the salad on two plates- already divided. The salad was absolutely amazing!! I am seriously still craving it and the portion was so large that I couldn't even finish my half. Our server promptly boxed it up before our entrees were served. For the main course, I ordered one of the specials- scallops with rice sauteed with spinach. My friend had pork roast with carrots, which was a large portion - no complaints and she took home leftovers for another meal. I'll speak to my scallops... They were perfectly prepared, but there were only three scallops and a plentiful serving of rice and spinach. I love spinach and this side was very well seasoned. It didn't take long to eat the three scallops and the spinach pieces in the rice. I definitely enjoyed my meal, but wished for even one more scallop. Since my entree was a special that was verbally announced, I didn't know the price until I saw the bill. While it was delicious, I found the $41 charge a bit steep. The Standard is exceptional in almost every way- service was impeccable, amazing food, lovely ambiance- but be prepared for a pricey evening. My friend and I had a very enjoyable time and I definitely recommend this restaurant. I will say, however, that it can be difficult to talk because it is so busy. While back in town visiting family and some old friends, we made a reservation for dinner on a Tuesday night at The Standard restaurant. There were three of us, and we were seated at one of the high tops near the kitchen. Our waitress was extremely kind and attentive without being overbearing. To start, my two friends ordered cocktails, while I ordered a glass of wine. I took a sip of each of their cocktails, and both were absolutely delicious. We decided to start with the whipped feta appetizer to share. It was divine - I could have easily eaten two orders of it. For our entrées, my friend and I decided to split the beet salad and then each get our own entree. The beet salad was tasty and actually quite filling. I ended up ordering a small fillet with sautéed mushrooms and onions. We also shared a side of cheddar grits and creamed corn. Everything was delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the steak. Unfortunately, between the appetizer, salad and entrée, in addition to the side dishes, we had no room left for dessert. We ended up talking for quite some time, but we're never rushed or pressured to vacate our table, which we appreciated. read more

We arrived to find the place absolutely packed--turns out it was prom night, and the wait time was three hours. Thankfully, John, the General Manager, went above and beyond to accommodate us. He managed to work us in within 10 minutes by rearranging a few things. We let him know we'd be done in an hour, and he agreed. Just five minutes later, he came back over and told us to take our time, which we really appreciated. The food? Absolutely incredible. Chef Jeff clearly has a deep passion for his craft--you can taste it in every bite. The portions were generous (some of the best we've seen in years) and the price points were more than fair. The entire staff was friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better. Highlights of the night: The best pasta I've ever had--shrimp, fresh tomato, garlic butter, and a panko crust topped with a rich butter sauce. A perfectly cooked pork chop with mushrooms and collard greens. A refreshing raspberry mocktail. A classic, delicious dirty Shirley--simple and tasty. Went here for a birthday celebration and everyone was so nice. They all signed a birthday card that was on the table when we got there. Got there a little early so we started with a drink at the bar. The smoked olive is a must get. The olives were the best I've ever had. Still thinking about them. We got seated in a room that looks like it could hold a private dinner party. For dinner we got the mussels for an app. So good. Dipped the bread in the sauce. Comes with a lot. A good shareable. Since it was a first time we wanted to try the steaks. We got the filet with butter add on. We also added on brussel sprouts and polenta. Filet was cooked to perfection. Polenta was creamy and sprouts had a good char. The food is certainly outstanding and they have a signature crabcake that cannot be beaten. But prior restaurants in that location have had good food. It's the People. All of the staff seem to have wonderful energy. They are positive, engaging and seems like they really want to serve and give a great customer experience. They do that. Very well. The owners are very hands-on as are the managers. They take a lot of pride in the work that they're doing, and it shows in their social media marketing and in the food that they present. The Standard in Toledo ended up being the perfect place for a date night. The vibe is such a nice mix of romantic and cozy, but still modern enough that it feels fun and current. It was lively the entire time we were there. Even the bar was completely packed so I'd recommend grabbing a reservation if you're thinking about going. The service really added to the experience. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and actually helpful when it came to recommending drinks and dishes. I ordered their old fashioned, and it was genuinely one of the best I've had in a long time, smooth, well-balanced, and clearly made by someone who knows what they're doing. And the food... amazing. The French onion soup was exceptional and exactly what you hope for when you order one. Everything else we had was delicious too, and it all came out at a good pace despite how busy the place was. Overall, The Standard delivered on everything: atmosphere, food, drinks, and service. It's one of those spots you leave already talking about when you're going to come back. I sat at the bar and ordered the Trophy Wife featured cocktail. The taste was fruity and balanced perfectly. For food I ordered the mussels and the beet salad. Both were absolutely devine. The flavor of the mussels were perfect and the bread it came with had the perfect crunch to soak in the sauce. The beet salad came with rock course salt, balsamic, pomegranate seeds and whipped goat cheese. It has every flavor needed to make his dish a great salad. For dessert, I ordered an affogato of course. If anyplace offers an affogato, I order it. But this one came with an orange liquor/digestif. The meal was amazing. It was our first time visiting The Standard and we loved it! We sat at the bar with a friend as we didn't have reservations. It was a busy Wednesday night during the holidays! We ordered the pan fried feta cheese that comes with garlic bread. It was amazing flavors and the garlic bread is perfectly crunchy. For dinner, my husband had the shrimp which he devoured. All the flavors worked well together. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs which come with 3 good sized meatballs separately in a bowl and then the spaghetti twirled about in a long plate, love a good presentation! It was spicy but delicious. The bartenders provided excellent service and even though they were busy, we didn't have to wait long for anything. Our reservation was at 5p, and it was relatively busy. We split a Wedge salad. It was excellent. We both had petit filets. Also excellent. My wife had mashed potatoes as a side. I had polenta. You would never guess this gem is hidden in the places it's in. Great location though right in the center of it all in Toledo. I came here for my birthday and was greeted with a table set for my party and a card from the staff! (Not to mention a free dessert, yum! All of the food was delectable. The steak is a la carte so beware of pricing but worth it. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny. My only complaint/ suggestion is that the volume in there is really high, felt like I had to tell to the people at my table, maybe something to help with that would make a huge difference in my experience. read more

We had the following: whipped feta Lamb chops Salmon Spaghetti and Meatballs French onion soup and House salad EVERYTHING was amazing It came out perfect my husband and I split the salad, soup and spaghetti and they perfectly split and made the experience amazing Cocktails were amazing Smoked Dirty Martini was NEXT LEVEL!!!! Also tried the Empress Cocktail and Old Fashioned. The rosemary blush was ok but the pulp was a bit much (personal preference) Dessert affogato and cheesecake - amazing loved the affogato look. Our party of 3 had the Miso Seabass x 2 & Swordfish as well as the pan fried feta cheese dip appetizer, crèmebrule, sticky toffee desserts, Smoked Olive martini & Rosemary's Blush and I cannot say how pleased we all were with everything!! An absolute bonus was our server Samantha. She was fantastic! Knowledgeable, helpful, made suggestions, & was super sweet. We had a delicious meal at The Standard last night. Make a reservation! We did but the people asking for a table a would have had about an hour or so wait on the weekend. Regardless, it would be worth the wait anyway. The restaurant is smaller inside than you would think but the atmosphere is swanky and fun. Low lighting , but not dark. Very cool vibe and you can even see the kitchen work depending on which side you are on. It was very cool to see. Clean and precise, they definitely know what they're doing. Our waiter was Jake and he was promptly at our table pouring us water and asking for our drink order. Super friendly and so helpful. I had a specialty cocktail and the fiancé had a standard (see what I did there) rum and Coke. Drinks were delicious. We started with the fried feta appetizer with hot honey. 9/10 for sure. Absolutely delicious. I wish it was a little warmer but feta doesn't hold its heat super well anyway. Still top notch and highly recommend. The garlic bread it comes with was also delicious. Ask the waitstaff for recommendations on food. I am so glad we did. Jake was right, one of the best meals we have ever had. He explained everything thoroughly and I ended up with the seared scallops with a butternut puree, cremini mushroom and Brussels sprouts. I'm not normally a scallops person but he said if you want good ones this is the place to try. They were on special so also not always going to be around. I felt like I had to try and I am so glad I did. Same with the fiancé. He's never had swordfish, and Jake said go for it. So he did. Absolutely delicious. The pasta with his was cooked to perfection and had a caper and garlic butter sauce that was just perfect. Sometimes capers can be overpowering but these were absolutely perfect. 10/10 on both our main dishes. The owner or GM came over and laid out all the deserts for us and asked how our meal was and was also incredibly friendly. It definitely made the experience feel homey and welcome. While all the desserts sounded delicious, we ended with the cheesecake, because that's my standard, and not something I can easily pass up. It was creamy and not too sweet. The crust was delicious and the berry toppings were very good but a little much for me. 9/10. Overall, if you're looking for a nice night out in Toledo give The Standard a try. We definitely will be back to try more on the menu. This place is good at everything, and great at nothing. The food was good. The drinks good. The service good. All around a good time, but not great. Nothing stood out or felt like it was better than any other $80 steak or $15 cocktail. The seafood was even good, but not great. The salad seems as if it's bagged shredded lettuce and the table bread tastes like frozen Texas toast. If you're going to have high end ambiance with high end prices then I'd want something better than a $56 choice ribeye that I could buy at Kroger for $12. That being said, the service was excellent and I did try the lamb chops that were excellent as well. read more

Complimentary champagne toast for celebrating a special occasion! Wow! However, regardless of if you have a reservation, no one has very much privacy in their seating arrangements. Hope you're okay with the table next to you sharing your bench seat. Steak was cooked to order (perfect mid-rare) and the cheddar grits are fantastic. We were surprised to see a credit card fee on our bill. We don't carry or use cash. It was lucky I happened to have my debit card, but otherwise, the restaurant expects guests to eat the processing fee for credit card transactions. Meanwhile, none of the steaks come with sides. Made reservations for birthday party. Restaurant was out of chicken, 2 people ordered spaghetti and meatballs. One of the orders the noodles were like mush. We contacted the waitress who said they would remake it and agreed that it wasn't like the other. Replacement was brought to table after everyone was done eating . She said she would ask manager to remove charge. Man comes to table and asked how that spaghetti was and we told him better. He left not stating who he was. I brought a homemade cheesecake per request of birthday boy. So waitress asked if we needed plates and forks and she brought them. Got the bill ,spaghetti was not removed from bill. When I inquired she told me they waived the 25.00 bring your desert fee. No where on website or did the waitress mention a fee for this and never at any other restaurant have I heard of this. After talking again about the remade food coming after the meal she asked the manager if she could take the meal off. Anyway restaurant expensive ,everything ala Carte and very disappointing especially since it was to celebrate a birthday. Don't waste a lot of money here. Never again! read more

Our first time visit certainly will not be our last! Our server Christina was delightful. The food (spare rib and filet mignon) was outstanding, beautifully prepared and served hot and decorative. We were surprised as we were leaving when Christina brought us a large tiramisu to take home in honor of our 63rd early Valentine's Day together. The service here was amazing. The waiter was the kindest waiter I have ever had, he made sure the experience was personal and was accommodating to everything we needed. The inside of the restroom is very nice. There is beautiful decor and a low lighting, nice vibe. The food is where this place lost their starts for me. Everything my partner and I had was so bland. Nothing we ordered seemed like it had been seasoned with anything, not even salt. When as establishment is charging $36+ for a single meal, I personally except the flavors to be amazing.
