Well this is like my 4 time here. Granted it's always a blessing leaving Michigan and coming into Ohio. The roads are just better here and the ribs here are tasty and passable. The biscuits here well just bite into a pillow same effect. The sides are plain in taste but I will say the ribs are worth the drive. First time into shortys and was amazingly surprised!! The menu options were fabulous and I loved the amount of variety they had. I got the triple meat platter and it was awesome!!!! I'd say my brisket was on the dryer side however the sauces were great! All the meats were incredible and the cornbread and onion rings were a showstopper for sure. Definitely some of the best I've had around and it is tough to find huge onion rings! Our waitress was fantastic and incredibly patient and kind as we waited on one more of our party. First time trying this BBQ spot in Toledo. Came here with my classmates after clinicals because we were all craving BBQ. I ordered the Texas brisket platter and added a 1/3 rack of pork ribs. For my two sides, I got mac n cheese and fries. The brisket was a little on the dry side but the sweet and spicy sauce on the side helped a lot. The ribs were good too, not the fall off the bone type but still tasty. The fries and mac n cheese were solid! The cornbread was just okay. It kind of tasted like one of those box cake mixes from Safeway. Nothing special but not terrible either. Our server Marlene was super friendly and kept checking in on us. Incredible , melt in your mouth ribs. Enjoyed a half rack with fries (crisp outside and soft inside) and scrumpsious cole slaw. I didn't have the ribs with added sauce. There were 2 containers on table with a sweet one and a spicy one. I used both together. It would be nice if the containers were labeled because I couldn't remember which was which. I went here for my boyfriend's 30th birthday because he really likes this place and was gifted a gift card. To start, our waitress was nice but acted oddly using an exaggerated high-pitched customer service voice that didn't feel genuine. As a server myself, I can tell when someone's just "putting it on." Still, she was polite overall. She forgot our cornbread to start, which was disappointing since my boyfriend used to come here often and always starts with that. We had to ask another passing server for it. We both ordered cocktails. I got a traditional Old Fashioned ,usually my favorite ...but I didn't like theirs at all. It tasted like straight rubbing alcohol, harsh and unpleasant. I had my boyfriend try it, and he agreed. Even though it seemed strong, I didn't feel the slightest buzz after finishing it, and I rarely drink except on special occasions. That made me think it was made with bottom-shelf liquor--strong-tasting but ineffective. I was disappointed, especially since I only ordered it to share a drink with him for his birthday. It felt like a waste of $8.99. As a bartender myself, I know what a good Old Fashioned should taste like, and this was not it. Moving on to the food it was subpar. Not terrible, but not great barbecue either, especially for the price. My family's from Texas, so my standards for BBQ are high, but I still think the flavor didn't match the cost. The potato salad was tasty but had too many raw onions and no egg, and I had to add salt and pepper. The "deluxe" mac and cheese cost extra, which seemed odd since mac and cheese is a classic BBQ side. So instead, I chose potato salad and something called "onion straws." When the food arrived, I was confused as these weren't a real side dish at all, just tiny fried onion bits like the kind used as a garnish in fine dining. I've worked in restaurants long enough to know that shouldn't even be listed as a side option. For dessert, we told the waitress it was his birthday. She said they offer one scoop of ice cream with a choice of topping (caramel, strawberry, or chocolate). Honestly, that felt pretty minimal for a place that charges what they do, but I figured we'd be grateful for anything free. Unfortunately, it came out completely melted and warm like soup. When we told her, she apologized and explained that it was the end of the night and the kitchen staff had already shut down the ice cream machine, so that was the last of it. It seemed like the ice cream had been sitting out while we ate, which really ruined the ending of his birthday dinner. We didn't complain we just let her know politely that it was fine, but he couldn't eat it since it was melted. A few minutes later, she returned and said, "My manager said he's really sorry and apologizes." That was it , no offer to remake it, comp something, or make it right. As someone who's worked in restaurants for years, I found that unprofessional. It definitely left a bad impression, and I wouldn't choose to come here again for a birthday or possibly at all. Toward the end, as we were finishing our drinks, she mentioned that they close at 9 and subtly started rushing us. That wasn't necessary; we knew the time and weren't planning to linger. We also didn't want to chug our drinks before driving. Plus, there was still a large table of about 10 people paying out, so they'd be there cleaning anyway. As a server, I'd never tell a table what time we close unless asked , it's unprofessional and can make guests feel unwelcome. And trying to rush people drinking alcohol can even be unsafe if they feel pressured to finish too quickly before driving. Overall, the experience was just okay. The food was mediocre, the service unprofessional at times, and the prices too high for the quality. Between the forgotten cornbread, poor cocktail, melted ice cream, and rushed service, it wasn't worth the money especially for a special occasion. Working in the food industry and running my own business for over 12+ years, I always give fair, honest feedback, and this just didn't meet expectations. Swung in after seeing some review photos. Atmosphere was cool, we had to wait for a table for 20 min but it was okay. No crayons for the kids menu.. bummer. Brisket was nothing to write home about, but the pulled pork was a table fave. Loved that!! Bbq sauce was great per my hubby. And the chicken tenders were real good. Same with fries YUM! Overall it was good. The place was packed, so I'm sure it's a staple in the area. It was a short 5 min drive from our hotel. This place is a solid BBQ joint that isn't a typical chain restaurant though it seems that this place is one of many restaurants in the Mancy's Restaurant Group. Service was good, friendly when I stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner, so the place wasn't busy but there were a few other folks in the joint. I read a previous review about the place smelling like "sewage," so I was curious to see if I had a similar experience. I didn't smell sewage, but I definitely smelled something that wasn't just the pleasant smell of barbecue and smoked meats. The best approximation of what I smelled was bug spray, the old school kind. And truth be told, barbecue and bug spray are outdoorsy smells so I wasn't entirely turned off. It definitely is odd though. It would probably smell different to others. The pulled Pork Eggrolls were tasty. Very crispy on the outside. Pork was tasty on the inside. I do wish that the coleslaw inside the rolls was served on the side to provide a cool, fresh crunch alongside the warm eggrolls. That's why I love Memphis-style pulled pork sandwiches; the warm pulled pork contrasts nicely with cool, creamy slaw. Obviously, that'd be a big change, but perhaps serving pickles on the side would be a nice alternative. The cornbread muffins served gratis reminded me of corn cupcakes; they were too sweet and didn't have the grainy cornmeal texture that I'm used to eating. Serving them with a sweet cinnamon butter on the side instead of baking the muffins with too much sugar in them would be better in my opinion. This is just a personal opinion and anyone else may love these as they are. The brisket I was served was a bit dry but the smoked chicken I had was great. Also the beans and coleslaw were above average, in my opinion. The coleslaw is a creamy version, so FYI, in case you prefer a vinegar-based slaw. Lastly, I enjoyed their bbq sauces; there were two of them. One was a bit spicier than the other but not by much. Was this the best bbq you'll ever get? Nah, but I think it's a place worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

This was my first visit to Shorty's in a while. I have to admit being vegetarian does not avail itself to many options at a BBQ establishment. I had the Honey BBQ Salmon dinner and it was probably some of the best grilled salmon I have ever eaten! Done just to my liking. The Christmas decorations also made it feel homey as the restaurant was very tastefully decorated. Hoping next time we get seated closer to the awesome fireplace in the main dining area. The capper to our meal was the Bourbon Bread Pudding that was probably enough for 3 people, but I took one for the team and devoured the portion of our generous section of yumminess!
