We celebrated a friend's birthday at J. Alexander's recently and had a wonderful experience. The service was very good, the food was delicious, and the drinks were great! The carrot cake is a must and I don't even love carrot cake. It's that good! I had the Trout Almondine and it was soooo good! I enjoyed my leftovers very much. 4/5 Stars We went to J. Alexander's as a party of four for a birthday dinner and had an excellent experience overall. The restaurant was clean, polished and completely dialed in. The atmosphere was upscale without feeling stuffy, and the service and timing throughout the meal were stellar. We started with the fire grilled artichokes, which were smoky, tender and served with a delicious dipping sauce. Everyone also had either a Caesar or house salad, and both were fresh and very good. For dinner, we ordered the mushroom meat loaf special, the 16 ounce New York strip, steak and fries, and the barbecue baby back ribs. Every dish was impressive. The mushroom meat loaf with mushroom gravy was awesome, especially with the roasted Brussels sprouts and their Not Your Ordinary Mac and Cheese. It was rich, flavorful and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The ribs were tender and flavorful, and the steaks looked and tasted great. The only issue was that my wife's steak came out quite a bit more undercooked than she ordered. Outside of that, everything was excellent, and the employees handled the entire evening professionally. Great food, outstanding service, cool ambience and a staff that clearly takes pride in the restaurant. We would absolutely come back. read more

Surprise surprise. My friend wanted to meet up here for lunch. I really thought this spot was out of business. On a Wednesday afternoon I figured the place would be empty. To my surprise the parking lot is packed and there's nowhere to park. No signs or anything indicating you can park around the back as I found out later so I ended up parking in the lot next door. They only have a few chicken items on the menu. One chicken sandwich and one roasted chicken dinner. I got the chicken sandwich which is the Hyde park. This is the same exact sandwich I've gotten every time I've ever been here which is why I really haven't come back because there's not a lot of selection for me. The other reason is they got rid of the croissants on the menu LOL. The service was fast and friendly and there was about a medium sized crowd inside despite the parking lot being full. They have kind of a dark semi romantic atmosphere I guess they're going for. The chicken sandwich was nice and tender. I'm not a fan of the shoe string fries because they remind me of Steak and Shake and at this price point I think they should have some good fries here. They actually had a few craft beers on tap but I thought the cocktail prices were a little extreme at 15 plus. My girl got the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and the potatoes were ice cold so they lose a star for that. Other than that I have no complaints except that the pricing for lunch. $20 for a chicken sandwich is a bit much to me. read more

Way! Overpriced! The steaks were basic! 48 dollars for a steak with pineapple and teriyaki sauce on it. Nothing You couldn't get at outback! And a lot less at outback! Service was good. I recently visited J Alexanders for my birthday while visiting my mom in the area. I was looking for a nice place to try and I was not disappointed. The food and wine options were amazing! I choose the filet and loaded baked potato. It was delicious and so flavorful! I tried some of my wife's prime rib. It was also amazing! You also must get the deviled eggs as they were delicious and flavorful. As it was my birthday they provided a large piece of carrot cake. It was delicious. read more

From out of state, but in Toledo for the afternoon. Knew nothing about Alexander's but explored the online menu and decided to give it a go. Walking in the 3 young female hostesses were chatting together and said it would be about 10 minutes. After 10, we approached host desk to inquire and one of three a bit sharply said "10 minutes " (there were empty tables, btw). We said "Oh! That's what we were told when we arrived!" The same person rolled her eyes and turned to make a somewhat sarcastic comment to her friend. We sat down and waited quietly. Had we let that deter us, which we considered, we would have missed an otherwise par excellence dining experience! Our server, Ava (pictured, with her permission), was fantastic! Knew the menu, acted as though it was a pleasure to serve us, answered questions, checked back, all with a joyful smile! Shared flame grilled artichoke app...superb! Hubs had a pre dinner IPA, and I had a pre dinner lightly dirty, really chilled martini w/bleu cheese olives. The great surprise was that instead of discarding what's left in the shaker, they pour it into a separate chilled glass set into a cup of icy water (pictured) to keep it cold until you replenish your martini glass. Hubby (also pictured bc he's the best dinner partner) had the baby back ribs. Ribs, country slaw, and perfectly roasted baked potato...He loved it all! I had the filet, which had their signature herb butter melting atop, and because I didn't want anything else that'd be heavy, chose the special sliced tomatoes (not cooked) and seasoned with skill. Perfect summer accompaniment! Great ambiance once we got past the lackluster hostesses. We will def return when in the Toledo area...might even make a special trip! read more

I went back and had just the smashed potatoes. There were chunks of undercooked potatoes in them. I understand chunky mashed potatoes, but I do not believe that means undercooked. The staff were nice and the bar top was clean so that's a plus. read more

I recently went to JA's to celebrate a birthday and an engagement. We were a party of four and had made a reservation a week beforehand for a Saturday evening. Our table was ready on time. While JA's is a chain restaurant, it's an upscale chain with a sophisticated ambiance that can generally be expected to deliver good quality food and service. I've been here many times over the years and have had some varying experiences. Fortunately, I can report that everything was five stars for my most recent visit. Our server, MJ, exceeded all expectations for service. He was extremely personable as he interacted with us and took an interest in the occasions we were celebrating. He also had a great sense of humor. When he was busy, other servers were attentive to us in a team like and friendly manner. Service was outstanding. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I ordered the Rattlesnake Pasta with chicken and shrimp. It was absolutely delicious! (See picture posted below.) Another person in our party ordered the same entree and also loved it. Since I had inquired about spiciness of the southwestern seasonings in the dish, MJ offered to bring seasoning on the side so I could add as much or as little as I wanted. The two others in our group ordered a steak entree and an ahi tuna dish. No complaints from either of them. (Pictures also posted.) After dinner, MJ served four plates so we could all taste the birthday girl's scrumptious carrot cake that is complimentary for all birthdays. It's beyond decadent and worth every calorie. We lingered talking after dinner and dessert and never felt pressured to leave after approximately three hours. Our experience was definitely amazing in every way due to the excellent service and food, in addition to enjoying the festivity of our celebration. Highly recommend this restaurant! read more

This was our first time eating here. And now we are mad at ourselves for not going sooner. Stephanie was our waitress and she was phenomenal. We actually split a couple entrees. She was amazing putting our entrées on separate plates and bringing enough dressings out for our salads. She then recommended the carrot cake. Did not get a picture of it, but it was amazing. The frosting...chefs kiss! Atmosphere was very warm and cozy. Not noisy at all. This will probably be one of our very favorite places that we will put in our rotation of dining out . I had some good food here. They had a good wine list as well. The food was so good, I felt like we were on a cruise ship. I got the ribeye with smashed potatoes and it was phenomenal. The meat was aged, tender, and had an amazing flavor. My husband got an espresso martini which was great as well! I loved how creamy it was. Since we were celebrating his birthday, they gave him a piece of carrot cake - that was probably some of the best carrot cake I have had! It tasted so fresh and was smothered in this cream cheese frosting, and it wasn't too sweet. I came here for my anniversary a while ago and I haven't been back since because the food was not good. There were so many people that recommended this place because of the food and I thought it was subpar at best. The steak was overcooked, the sides had no flavor, and the drinks were just okay. Excellent food, excellent staff, excellent service. Going to a chain restaurant in another state can be a gamble. Not here, parking lot was full so I expected a wait. I did not have to wait. The service was Johnny on the spot with the table service. I didn't sit down to a half wiped table with dirty dish water. My server was knowledgeable about the menu and was able to answer any question put to her. My steak was cooked perfect medium. Mac and cheese was also delicious. The most important thing is that the food was delicious! The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is quiet and a bit more serious than your usual family restaurant. (Which is what we ladies had hoped for.) The price was a bit high, but I checked the menu before going, so was prepared. Wish the lighting was better. (I always feel a bit unsure of the restaurant when you can't see the corners of the room.) Really nice for a special occasion. Or just to treat yourself. I really want to like this place... It has great ambiance. So, the drinks are never any good and they are expensive. Everything is made in a shaker. I've commented on my disdain for shakers. Imagine if the chef used the deep fryer to make everything. A bartender always using a shaker is kind of the same thing. One wouldn't sauté spinach in the deep fryer, would they? Proper tools need to be used for their proper applications. Anyway, I've learned my lesson at this place and ordered an iced tea when we were at the bar waiting for our table. Kind of hard to screw that up and amazingly, they didn't shake it! When we were summoned to our table, I brought my tea with me. The waiter took another drink order, and I requested a refill for my tea. He brought me a new glass and after reviewing the final bill, he charged me for it too, nice... I'm guessing he was trying to pad the bill. Appetizer - Spin dip to start. Always a hit and no exceptions this time. Plenty of chips, plenty of dip. A nice start to the meal. This came out within a reasonable amount of time, but the entrees took FOREVER - probably 40 minutes. The waiter even acknowledged it was taking a long time. The entrees are usually kind of hit or miss and like the drinks, always expensive. I ordered the French Dip this time. Amazingly stingy with the meat, the jus was tasteless, and the roll wasn't the usual French roll, but something more like a ciabatta roll (and maybe from the previous day?). No grilled onions and not sure there was any cheese. That said, the fries were on target - GREAT fries! That said, not worth the $21.00, no way. The wait staff is always kind of pretentious and full of themselves. That said, they're usually efficient and I really didn't want for anything, but the attitude was always there. Maybe I was just in a mood that night, but I was picking up on some type of excess "tude." Could be I felt I was being looked down upon because I wasn't drinking and I only ordered a sandwich. Whatever... In summation, I haven't been here in several years - probably pre covid. Really, nothing's changed. Mediocre, overpriced food, very slow service and lots of attitude. There are much better places within a few miles of this place, but I'm sure we'll be back at some point. I'll just make sure I eat first and order some water and Spin dip on my next visit. read more

The cheeseburger was average (similar to Applebees quality), the ahi salad lacked flavor, the mashed potatoes weren't anything special, and the steak salad was grisly. For the price, disappointing. We reserved a table at Alexander's for a dinner for 4 over 2 weeks ago. Everything went well at first. When dinner arrived I decided to take mine to go. Was told the ribs were the best. When I opened the takeout box at home, the ribs were BEYOND burnt to a crisp. How the kitchen let something like this out is crazy.
