Surprise surprise. My friend wanted to meet up here for lunch. I really thought this spot was out of business. On a Wednesday afternoon I figured the place would be empty. To my surprise the parking lot is packed and there's nowhere to park. No signs or anything indicating you can park around the back as I found out later so I ended up parking in the lot next door. They only have a few chicken items on the menu. One chicken sandwich and one roasted chicken dinner. I got the chicken sandwich which is the Hyde park. This is the same exact sandwich I've gotten every time I've ever been here which is why I really haven't come back because there's not a lot of selection for me. The other reason is they got rid of the croissants on the menu LOL. The service was fast and friendly and there was about a medium sized crowd inside despite the parking lot being full. They have kind of a dark semi romantic atmosphere I guess they're going for. The chicken sandwich was nice and tender. I'm not a fan of the shoe string fries because they remind me of Steak and Shake and at this price point I think they should have some good fries here. They actually had a few craft beers on tap but I thought the cocktail prices were a little extreme at 15 plus. My girl got the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and the potatoes were ice cold so they lose a star for that. Other than that I have no complaints except that the pricing for lunch. $20 for a chicken sandwich is a bit much to me.

I recently visited J Alexanders for my birthday while visiting my mom in the area. I was looking for a nice place to try and I was not disappointed. The food and wine options were amazing! I choose the filet and loaded baked potato. It was delicious and so flavorful! I tried some of my wife's prime rib. It was also amazing! You also must get the deviled eggs as they were delicious and flavorful. As it was my birthday they provided a large piece of carrot cake. It was delicious.

From out of state, but in Toledo for the afternoon. Knew nothing about Alexander's but explored the online menu and decided to give it a go. Walking in the 3 young female hostesses were chatting together and said it would be about 10 minutes. After 10, we approached host desk to inquire and one of three a bit sharply said "10 minutes " (there were empty tables, btw). We said "Oh! That's what we were told when we arrived!" The same person rolled her eyes and turned to make a somewhat sarcastic comment to her friend. We sat down and waited quietly. Had we let that deter us, which we considered, we would have missed an otherwise par excellence dining experience! Our server, Ava (pictured, with her permission), was fantastic! Knew the menu, acted as though it was a pleasure to serve us, answered questions, checked back, all with a joyful smile! Shared flame grilled artichoke app...superb! Hubs had a pre dinner IPA, and I had a pre dinner lightly dirty, really chilled martini w/bleu cheese olives. The great surprise was that instead of discarding what's left in the shaker, they pour it into a separate chilled glass set into a cup of icy water (pictured) to keep it cold until you replenish your martini glass. Hubby (also pictured bc he's the best dinner partner) had the baby back ribs. Ribs, country slaw, and perfectly roasted baked potato...He loved it all! I had the filet, which had their signature herb butter melting atop, and because I didn't want anything else that'd be heavy, chose the special sliced tomatoes (not cooked) and seasoned with skill. Perfect summer accompaniment! Great ambiance once we got past the lackluster hostesses. We will def return when in the Toledo area...might even make a special trip!

I went back and had just the smashed potatoes. There were chunks of undercooked potatoes in them. I understand chunky mashed potatoes, but I do not believe that means undercooked. The staff were nice and the bar top was clean so that's a plus.

I recently went to JA's to celebrate a birthday and an engagement. We were a party of four and had made a reservation a week beforehand for a Saturday evening. Our table was ready on time. While JA's is a chain restaurant, it's an upscale chain with a sophisticated ambiance that can generally be expected to deliver good quality food and service. I've been here many times over the years and have had some varying experiences. Fortunately, I can report that everything was five stars for my most recent visit. Our server, MJ, exceeded all expectations for service. He was extremely personable as he interacted with us and took an interest in the occasions we were celebrating. He also had a great sense of humor. When he was busy, other servers were attentive to us in a team like and friendly manner. Service was outstanding. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I ordered the Rattlesnake Pasta with chicken and shrimp. It was absolutely delicious! (See picture posted below.) Another person in our party ordered the same entree and also loved it. Since I had inquired about spiciness of the southwestern seasonings in the dish, MJ offered to bring seasoning on the side so I could add as much or as little as I wanted. The two others in our group ordered a steak entree and an ahi tuna dish. No complaints from either of them. (Pictures also posted.) After dinner, MJ served four plates so we could all taste the birthday girl's scrumptious carrot cake that is complimentary for all birthdays. It's beyond decadent and worth every calorie. We lingered talking after dinner and dessert and never felt pressured to leave after approximately three hours. Our experience was definitely amazing in every way due to the excellent service and food, in addition to enjoying the festivity of our celebration. Highly recommend this restaurant!

This was our first time eating here. And now we are mad at ourselves for not going sooner. Stephanie was our waitress and she was phenomenal. We actually split a couple entrees. She was amazing putting our entrées on separate plates and bringing enough dressings out for our salads. She then recommended the carrot cake. Did not get a picture of it, but it was amazing. The frosting...chefs kiss! Atmosphere was very warm and cozy. Not noisy at all. This will probably be one of our very favorite places that we will put in our rotation of dining out . Highly recommend!!!

I keep falling in love with this place. Over and over again. I go years in between visits and it manages to maintain the quality of service and food. The atmosphere is very chill with low lighting and comfortable seats. The timing of food delivery and drink delivery is perfect.

We ordered the soup and salad as I always do. They are both really good and just the right amount of food. The staff were great even though we walked in the door 30 minutes before closing time. Everything was great.

Always great food! Tried the Hong Kong shrimp for the first time & it was delicious. A little spice to it but not bad. They also have the best ranch. Queso & pasta are staples we always order.

Excellent food, excellent staff, excellent service. Going to a chain restaurant in another state can be a gamble. Not here, parking lot was full so I expected a wait. I did not have to wait. The service was Johnny on the spot with the table service. I didn't sit down to a half wiped table with dirty dish water. My server was knowledgeable about the menu and was able to answer any question put to her. My steak was cooked perfect medium. Mac and cheese was also delicious. Next time I'm in Ohio, I won't hesitate to return.

This was my first time back to J. Alexander's in over 20 years after returning to Toledo and I loved every moment! The waitress was extremely nice, helpful, and accommodating. The drinks were delicious. The calamari was very good. The steak brazzo was flavor-overload and I loved it! My daughter loved her seafood Alfredo, and also the key lime pie was really good. I had absolutely no complaints-perfecto!

    Lemon drop. Sooo good!

Tonight the food was so good, fillet cooked perfectly, Mac and cheese so amazing, drinks were perfect. And to top it off our waitress Brooke was top notch! She was friendly, helpful and attentive. It was a perfect meal.

We went again on Saturday. WOW!…read more Started with a Martini for my dining partner and iced tea for me. Both were great. The waiter (Josh, a five-star waiter if ever there was one) really knows how to take care of his customers. He really knows the menu, can explain the dishes along with their components and what makes them unique and paces each course perfectly. He even asked if we were BOTH done before any dishes were removed from the table. Nothing looks worse than one person still eating while the rest of the table has no plates in front of them. We started with the roasted carrot salad. The carrots were perfectly roasted and chilled with and amazing tahini "paste" and radicchio, perfectly dressed with a lemon vinaigrette. OUTSTANDING!!! Seriously, this could have been my entire meal! The tahini paste is great, and I made it once while making a tahini dressing for roasted Brussels sprouts. Tahini naturally gets thick (paste like) when liquid is added. To make the paste, just stop adding liquid to it and stop mixing until it gets smooth again. Seriously, delicious. We both ordered the chicken schnitzel for our entrees. It comes with a really nice side salad consisting of mixed greens, dressed again with a very mild vinaigrette. My only quibble (and it's a really small one) is I would have liked the schnitzel to be a bit thinner. That said, it was perfectly cooked, not at all dry and the thickness is up to the creator of the dish. I don't think there's a "standard" for this (ha, ha - get it!). Great breading and very tasty. The dessert... Again, had to go with the sticky toffee pudding! If this is on the menu, there's no way I'm not going to order it. GOD, it's just a perfect ending to a great meal, well, that along with a pot of French Press coffee. All in all, the meal came to $108.00 excluding the tip. Expensive, but WORTH EVERY PENNY! I spent that much a few weeks ago (maybe more) on a really awful meal/experience at a different place. You'll have to read my old reviews to figure that one out! Anyway, this place treats their employees like they actually appreciate them. They took them on a cruise! Of all the restaurants I used to work at, the best thing I ever received was a shift meal or maybe a cold beer because I was still at the place cooking apps at 1:00 in the morning and the manager wanted to go home but felt bad because I couldn't leave. Thanks for the glass of Miller Lite draft, Mr. Chi-Chi's manager guy! Everyone in the place, from the servers to the hostesses, to the bus folks and the floor manager had smiles and a sense of graciousness and appreciation to each and every customer. Try to find that at any other restaurant in Toledo. The food is top notch, made with very unique recipes and techniques you're not going to find anywhere else. The dining room and restrooms (at least the men's) are clean. I never had to ask for a refill on my iced tea or water. New silverware was brought before each course was served. The old plates were removed from the table after the staff asked if it was OK to do so. Proper training in procedure and etiquette is obvious. Again, just a great meal in every way - 10 out of 10! Can't wait to go back.

We loved the Standard after visit #1. Then, somehow, a year and a half passed before we returned…read more The reason was location, and the reason was atmosphere, but mostly it was atmosphere. After visit #2, I'm not sure there will be a visit #3 anytime soon. The consensus among friends -- confirmed now by our own table -- is that everything is too heavy. The first few bites bring the oohs and the ahhs. By halfway through the plate, the ughs and the oofs begin. The menu reads as thoughtful and dialed in. Our table of four ordered very different entrees -- seafood, steak, pasta, salad -- and somehow every plate arrived at the same destination: rich, savory, dense. No acid. No brightness. And strangely, blue cheese and garlic had crept into every single bite, as if the kitchen could not bear to let a dish leave without them. A meal that should have pleased everyone left most of us with a mild remorse. I felt surprisingly ill for hours afterward -- not because anything was unsafe, not because it wasn't delicious, but because it was simply too much. Too rich. Too savory. The body, it turns out, asks for contrast, and we had not been given any. The service, on the other hand, is STILL outrageously good. Without question some of the best in the region -- better than nearly every higher-end room in town. But the atmosphere is stuffy, the food is one-note, and high quality is not the same thing as good execution. My wife's "medium plus" steak arrived extremely rare. My salmon was undercooked. At this price, that is inexcusable. Still -- the service. The service is something to behold.

I decided to try the Spinach dip which was highly recommended by a fellow Yelper. I'm so glad I tried it because it was delicious! It's the best appetizer I had: Ever! It was hot and cheesy with bold delicious flavors and the pita was large and perfectly fried and crispy. I will order this every time we go! I decided on a burger because I was craving one. I opted for the salad instead of fries with their delicious homemade ranch dressing. My burger was so big, I could barely take a bite. I ate half and took the rest home. It was cooked to my liking: medium well and was good, no complaints. My husband's steak was the winner. He gave me a small bite and I started to regret my choices. I think I will get the steak next time. It was to die for. We had another wonderful dinner here. Our waitress was great! Our food was great. The price was great! The waitress brought them out a few minutes later but they were a bit overdone. My real issue came with paying the bill. I used the Ziosk to pay by credit card and noticed the suggested tips by percentage were grossly off in calculation by several dollars. When I alerted a manager to the issue, she said it was a third party device out of their control. I began snapping pictures of the miscalculations and then she told me "Pictures aren't necessary." That made me very suspicious because this restaurant serves alcohol and customers may not be paying attention to the calculations. Overall, my concern with the financial integrity of this restaurant will make my unlikely to return, although the chicken fingers are quite good.

I had tried to make a reservation for a party of two, but was told they only take reservations for larger groups. I was advised to arrive between 5pm-5:30pm on a Saturday evening to avoid a wait. We arrived at 5:30pm and were promptly seated. The ambiance here is very casual and comfortable. Our server promptly came by to take our drink orders and give us menus. We were also provided with complimentary biscuits that were very good, though not as warm as we would have liked. I ordered the honey-BBQ salmon with green beans and mac 'n cheese. My friend ordered a burger. Food was served in an appropriate amount of time. My salmon was perfectly grilled and seasoned. The green beans were plentiful and deliciously fresh. The macaroni and cheese was a bit disappointing but not bad. It came in a small container and all I could see initially was a cream sauce; once I put my fork in, I discovered the macaroni. We had a nice evening and service was casually excellent- which is the vibe of the restaurant. I would definitely return and recommend Shorty's True American Roadhouse!

The biscuits here well just bite into a pillow same effect. The sides are plain in taste but I will say the ribs are worth the drive. They have a nice smoke flavor and a lite bark but tender.Their brisket a little bit better than last time so it gets a 2. The bake beans are a must taste they are awesome. So romantic and a great touch to the atmosphere. The food was great. I came with friends and I hope to come back soon with my husband and parents! The service was decent. The only negative is bathrooms are in a weird place and are completely in need of a renovation. It's too nice of a space to have bathrooms like that!

3.25 I've dined at this restaurant many times over the years…read more- the last time was over a year ago. I still find the retro historic ambiance charming- with its over-the-top velvet wallpaper, ornate chandeliers, and white tablecloths on each table. I don't believe any decor changes have been made over the decades. It's part of the restaurant's signature charm and I love it. It was a rather hot and humid day in Michigan and I immediately noticed that the AC wasn't keeping up with the heat. Still, it wasn't overly uncomfortable. Even with a 6pm reservation, the restaurant was very crowded, so I attributed the heat to the crowd and some of the sizzling plates, in addition to lack of adequate AC. . Our server greeted us promptly and told us about the specials of the night. She took our drink orders and came back to take our food orders. My friend ordered filet mignon with a baked potato, with a beef vegetable soup. I ordered the Halibut Special, broiled in butter with shiitake mushrooms and a baked potato plus a side of steamed asparagus to share. While awaiting our orders, we were served exactly two pieces of bread ("dirty bread"?!) and a basket of bread or pretzel sticks. The bread wasn't even warm and I didn't eat it further after one bite. That was okay because I was saving myself for the entree'. When our entrees arrived, they looked appetizing. Upon taking a bite of my Halibut, however,I was underwhelmed. It wasn't horrible in any way but didn't impress me as anything amazing or crave-worthy. The asparagus, imo, should have had the stalks cut down further to cut off the yellow parts of the bottoms. It was a decent sized portion though. My friend's filet mignon was "good" according to her, though no further enthusiasm. It was a pleasant enough dinner though it was rather loud and difficult to converse at times. Our server was polite, pleasant and efficient. Upon being served the check, (I was treating for my friend's birthday), I glanced at it but didn't study it. Later, I was surprised to see a petty surcharge of .50 each for sour cream for the two baked potatoes that were included in the entrees. There was also an upcharge I didn't recognize for some type of cheese? I just don't like being nickled and dimed, so it irritated me. I left the restaurant thinking that I wouldn't hurry back and that I would order a pasta dish. However, it's definitely worth checking out for the experience if you haven't tried this spot. It's very close to Toledo and there's plenty of free parking. Check out pics below!
