We came here as it's a "Michelin bib gourmand" restaurant! My friend who has eaten at other Michelin star restaurants wasn't super impressed. She has had hunanese cuisine before and didn't think this was as authentic. However, we still quite enjoyed the food! Note that it is a bit on the pricier side. We had the chicken wit oyster mushroom and chives-- I loved the flavor and it had the perfect balance of gingery and chivy. The cold sesame noodles were soo good and definitely a hit! They were so creamy and tasty. I loved the Shaoshan cabbage, it was flavorful, crisp, and a bit vinegary and sour. They don't come with rice so we had to order a side of rice. The lychee drink was really good. The fizz from soda water was amazing and the pomegranate juice flavor really stood out. Overall it was a great meal and we had amazing service!!

Went for dinner and everything was good but we weren't really blown away for it having a bib gourmand award. The two mocktails we had were so so good loved the mango sticky rice drink definitely try that. The soup dumplings and the gyozas were good but not really different from any others I've had. The eggplant and string beans were okay I probably wouldn't order them again. And we also tried the spicy beef and crispy rice dish which was pretty good maybe my second favorite thing we had but it also didn't really seem that special.

Easy-to-access Kendall Square location, with a bright, modern feel, different sections, private rooms, and plenty of booths and tables, including a snaking curved table near the windows. Weekday lunch with a lunch special and an extra app. -- Nom Numb Wings: All flats, well covered in spicy red chile peppers, plus some peppercorns in the mix. Skins lightly crispy, interiors extremely tender and juicy. You can choose the spice level; I went with authentic spicy and found it challenging but delicious. Only negative was that the wings were on the small side, but they included 7 instead of 6. They also supplied plastic gloves to keep the chile pepper heat off the fingers (and indirectly elsewhere). Above average. -- Hot and Sour Soup (included with the weekday lunch special): Tasty broth, with the requisite spicy and sour flavors, plus a little something extra. I think there may have been some fermented vegetables in there; whatever it was made it refreshing. Light crunch to the vegetables. Not too oily. Well above average. -- Beef on Fire (weekday lunch special): The large bowl with enough meat to be an entree had tender slivers of beef studded with chile peppers, herbs, and greenery. Good feel, good taste, good slice, good balance. Simplicity let the ingredients shine with no need for sauce; it was still moist enough to work well with the white rice (not included but available for a surcharge). Well above average. Overall, solid across the board. Spicy. Generous. Polished. Some might think it too polished, but delicious is delicious, whether polished or not. In late 2025, Sumiao received Michelin recognition-- one of only two dozen restaurants in the Boston area. I can think of a few others that are just as deserving that didn't receive that accolade, but that takes nothing away from Sumiao. Friendly, professional service. Parking a little easier than you'd think. Don't go just because of the Michelin recognition. Go for the food. I'll be returning for sure.

I made a reservation at Sumiao Hunan Kitchen, but still ended up waiting about 20 minutes after arriving before being seated. Once we were at the table, service was a bit slow to start, though things eventually picked up. We ordered the scallion pancakes, spicy cucumbers, and the crunchy fried duck. The scallion pancakes were a little greasier than I would have liked, but they still delivered that familiar comfort-food flavor. The spicy cucumbers were the most surprising dish of the night. They were spicier than expected with a touch of sweetness, and ended up being a standout. The crunchy fried duck was crispy, flavorful, and very well executed. I highly recommend the duck! I went it expecting a lot given the Michelin bib. Overall, it was a good dinner, but not a great one. The food was solid without being exceptional, and the service matched that same middle-of-the-road feeling. Worth trying if you're curious, just go in with measured expectations.

Upscale but casual Chinese Cuisine. The interior is trendy and colorful. The prices are on the high end. The menu is massive and has so many tantalizing choices for drinks, appetizers, sweets, and entrees. We ordered more dishes than I could count or try. The apps were the winners for me. My favorite was the Five Spice Beef ($14). The scallion pancake ($14) was crispy and addicting and paired well with the beef. The Soup Dumplings ($17) came steaming hot and were super unique with a crispy skin on the bottom. The Crispy Cucumbers ($12) were also great. Out of all the entrees we ordered I tried the Crispy Duck ($42), Crispy Fish Fillet ($28, THIS was my favorite), and Lava Fish ($28). It's hard to explain but the dishes were lacking a certain "oomph", and the duck was too salty for me. You can choose mild to spicy for any of these dishes, we asked for "authentic spice" and the only one that had a kick to me was the Lava Fish. The staff were so nice and accommodating for our last minute large group, and didn't really even fuss around us staying around until closing time. Overall, we had a wonderful time here :) Though, I can see someone complaining about the over-pricedness of the menu.

I really liked my visit here! The food tasted really fresh and flavorful, while not being oily which is hard to find usually!! Our server Sofia was awesome and so helpful to us. We really liked the cumin-scented mini potatoes and the cocktails. The restaurant was very clean, spacious, and cool inside. I also loved the secret drink menu (iykyk ). Can't wait to come back and try more stuff!

We were excited to try this newly minted Michelin Bib Gourmand Chinese restaurant in Cambridge. The service was nice, space clean, and vibe was chill. We love their fish in foil, duck egg yolk coated shrimp, and beef on fire. Their tieguanyin tea was whole tea leaves so it helped cleanse the palette between bites very well. Highly recommend this place!

Birthday dinner at Sumiao = 10/10 Great vibes, amazing food, and the sweetest surprise dessert on the house! Shoutout to Manish for being the most attentive server Get the peach nigori and thank me later! (Pork belly could be a touch more tender, but still a solid pick.)

    Yellow river beef (4/5)

Yellow river beef with authentic spicy (4/5): this was more sour than spicy. As a spicy food lover, I'd say the spicy level was 4/10. Broth wasn't bad but it didn't have an in-depth flavor. Portion was small (chopsticks for scale), especially for the price but they didn't skimp on beef. It had (I think) thin sliced brisket meat and it was tender and flavorful. Rice needs to be ordered separately. One strange thing to note, the hostess asked for my phone number for check-in even though the restaurant was empty and I got seated right away.

Stopped in to try for a lunch. First visit. The owner or maître d' at entrance asked if my first visit. Single diner, then seats me at small table by good window by kitchen utensils, storage? Many empty other tables with no visitors? And slow late lunch timeframe. Well ordered the ginger scallion chicken lunch special, the num chicken wings appetizer. Rice was an extra charge for a small bowl. Hot and sour or pumpkin soup was included. Well, listened to someone over ware wing , stacking, plates stacking as my seating location... walking back and forth to a hidden behind curtain where looks like staff was back there coming and going with food for their lunch...no ambiance to be had here at this table ? Pumpkin soup was unusual but was good ... I would have made it pumpkin egg drop soup. Entree shows and small in size, was reheated and could tell from the cold taste. It had a nice ginger flavor . I wouldn't reorder as wax not freshly prepared. The wings were very small in size, 6 flats small . These tasted reheated as well. They had a strong flavor and were just ok. Brown rice add on was needed as didn't come with the lunch special. I don't see returning again. Wasn't a 46 dollar lunch with tip and water as beverage.

Sumiao Hunan Kitchen well done! We got there before the dinner rush today. Our server Charlie was amazing, she gave recommendations and was personable, attentive and got us refills etc. we checked out the dine out Boston menu but opted to order from their regular menu instead. The food on the list today: Fish fillet in fiery broth - regular spice had a flavorful kick, fish fillets tender and was super enjoyable. You get plenty of fish, bean sprouts and fish tofu? Tiger skin pork belly with crispy pickled cabbage - our highlight, though i would have put a tad more salt in the brine or however they prep it, this was our favorite. The fatty pork belly was so tender on inside, juicy and the outside crispy!! This portion will knock you on your behind, def shareable with 4+ people! Apparently newish to their menu! Beef sizzling plate with chili and onions my least favorite of the bunch but still good, beef cooked well, has that peppercorn flavor, chilis weren't too spicy at all. Ginger ale - Fizzyyyyyy let's go White rice great with the dishes we ordered Guava mango sorbet nice refreshing desert to our full stomach's before headed out on the rode! Coming back again soon for a bday dinner in the family! If you are reserving for a party, they require a CC on file and if you have no shows you'll be charged $25/pp missing so any changes or cancellations need to be done 24hr in advance! This spot food wise kicks some high end buts over in seaport, yes I'm looking at you Mr.H! Haha great lighting and we was in and out before the dinner rush and booked tables piled in!

~First Impressions~ The inside of the restaurant has a lot of character! Some of the tables are weirdly shaped (kind of like a wave of water) but it really gives the room character. The decorations are beautiful and it feels very modern. This is my second time here and both times have been great even after a year or two of missing out. ~The Food~ We had the string bean with eggplant, fish fillet in fiery broth, and grandma's pork. The fish fillet is always a go to dish for me to try at any Chinese restaurant I go to. Although it was a bit milder than I expected and was hoping for a bit spicier, but the fish was soft and plenty of veggies to mix with and eat with rice. The soup is always great on a cold day. The grandma's pork looked unassuming but was delicious. Not too chewy and the scallions and peppers really balanced out the meatiness of the dish. The eggplant and string beans was a strange combo. I felt like the string bean crunch and soft eggplant didn't really go together as textures, but the taste was great. ~The Logistics~ This place can definitely accommodate large parties, especially in that strangely shaped wave table. There are also plenty of seats for smaller parties and I haven't had to wait for a seat yet. The staff is super friendly and will give great recommendations. Definitely coming back!

The fish was called something like Yellow fish, but the flavor of the dish was quite unusual.

The restaurant décor and service were excellent, but the food flavors were just okay.

Not spicy. Not too saucy, so you can "feel" the noodle, but I would have liked more vegetables. -- Yibin Fiery Noodles: Warm and similarly al dente, these were manageably spicy. Meat crumble, seeds or nuts, scallions, and heat. -- Red and Green Pepper Chicken: Batterless but crisp, tender, and not boneless. Relentlessly spicy from several heat sources and kaleidoscopically delicious. The closest comparison is dry hot chicken that also goes by a few other names, but this was better. Elite, and the best thing I ate in all of 2025, but sadly no longer on the menu. -- Stone Pot Tofu: Billed as Ma Po Tofu sizzling in a stone pot, but no sizzle and no stone pot. Identified as very spicy but minimally spicy and more numbing (more "ma" than "la"). I enjoyed the overall flavor (heavily seasoned) and the saltiness of the fermented black beans. Crisp, beefy, and chili sauce on the side added contrast. Solid, but boring, more typical of an Americanized offering, and a waste of an opportunity given Too Hot's killer menu. -- Pork Belly with Fermented Beans: Superb rendition, not drastically different from twice cooked pork, but much more flavor and giant pieces. *Limited Street Parking (Resident Pass Required)…read more The vibes is here are great, it has dim lighting and is pretty busy but small so I would recommend getting a reservation. They have a limited menu with some items being seasonal but the waiters are very helpful and will let you know. I strongly recommend the toro, it is on the pricey side for $55 but it is one of their most popular dishes and I would say it's worth it. One dish that was recommended by everyone that I was a little disappointed about was the lobster roe pasta. It was good but I didn't enjoy it as much as expected and it started become gummy like so if you don't eat it quickly, it may become like this. It is a little plain without the lobster meat but there is an additional $15 charge so that is up to you. We also got another dish, I forget the name I think it was some black bean octopus over rice. But this dish was great with a little spice to it. Enjoyed the sake flight as well, the menu is pretty descriptive so you can pick and choose which ones that look good to you.

We started with the temaki sushi ($32) which came with two handrolls that had a good balance of rice and fish. They weren't super large but were fresh and had good flavor. We then got the miso-braised pork shoulder ($18), which was a larger portion than expected. This was our favorite dish, as the pork was very tender and flavorful. The dish had pieces of cabbage which were soft, naturally sweet, and soaked up all the flavor of the sauce. I would get this again, but with some rice because it was seasoned strongly. As this seems to be one of their most popular dishes, we also ordered the lobster roe pasta ($34). While the noodles were creamy and tasty, I think this dish is more worthwhile if you add the lobster (+$15). It does become even pricier at that point, but the noodles on their own were not super memorable. At the end we had some stomach space left and were still curious about the menu so we ordered the monkfish katsu ($25). I regretted getting this! The breading and fish basically tasted like the frozen fish fingers you can buy from the grocery store. While the yuzu tartar sauce was tasty, the rest of the dish was just not worth it. Overall, I thought the fish was good quality and really loved the pork shoulder. I would definitely eat here again, but would do more research on different menu items ahead of time.

Huge shoutout to Eduardo, the manager, who went above and beyond to make our sisters holiday outing feel special and intentional, and to our server Paulina, who was attentive, warm, and truly wanted everything to be perfect. And it was. Let's talk ambiance first because whew. Chic. Stylish. Aesthetic on aesthetic. Even the walk to the bathroom felt curated. Ladies... the mirror alone deserves a moment. Full body selfie approved. Now the drinks. The mocktail I had was SO good. Balanced, flavorful, refreshing. I like a mocktail that has flavor and layers without being super sweet. The apps thoughhhhhh! They deserve their own paragraph because baby... The crab rangoon was TO DIE FOR. That old school wrap dough situation? I have been hunting for that exact texture and flavor forever. My fave restaurant switched dough and I haven't had a good Rangoon since then until now. It was crispy, nostalgic, and perfect. The fried egg rolls? Delicious. The pickled cucumbers? Bright and refreshing and er literally ate every drop, lol. But the WINNER... those fall off the bone ribs. I might have made a sound when I bit into them. Cooked to perfection. A full blown flavor party in my mouth. The scallion pancakes were the only thing that did not hit for me. The dough was thicker and heavier than I prefer. I love mine light and airy like traditional scallion pancakes. If they leaned that way I would have been obsessed. Our main courses... baybeeee The Dan Dan noodles... I did not even get a bite. I went to ask my sister for a taste and they were GONE. All of them. That says everything. My other sister loved the dumplings and even more that they fried them for her instead of serving them traditionally. And the sauce with those dumplings... Let me tell you about the sauce. I am OBSESSED. I took some home and Eduardo generously gave me more to take. That is top tier service and an at home sauce party, lol. My fried house rice was excellent. The mix of veggies and flavors was perfection. With everything else we ordered I could not even finish it. And then... dessert. Eduardo and Paulina surprised us with a complimentary cheesecake that was so light and decadent, topped with fruit and homemade whipped cream. Next time I am absolutely saving space for that. The customer service was truly top tier. The decor, the food, the staff, the background music. Everything PERFECT. My sisters and I sat for hours. We laughed. We ate. We shared emotions. We were present. That alone tells you how comfortable and welcoming this space is. I would go back today. I cannot wait to bring my husband and some of my fellow foodies. Yelp Elite gang... this place is officially five star approved. GOO!

Trendy downtempo/chill-out music, showy decor, and a clean modern appearance, yet there were only two other patrons on a Saturday evening. But the food is where the rubber meets the road, and the food here was mediocre. Ordered the sushi bites and tuna tacos and everything was slathered in sauces that were over-flavored and not prepared with any sort of light touch. The place is trying hard to be hip, trendy, and fancy, but is somehow out of touch with that subtle X-factor that makes a restaurant stand out. The kicker was that I got food poisoning within an hour of eating. Maybe the tiger was lucky, but I was not so lucky.

Staff was very knowledgeable about each entree, and provided information about how entrees were cooked and served. They also had a "halvsies" menu of half-size portions (ideal portions for one or two diners). Started with the Mama Chang Pork Dumplings, which were excellent, and the cauliflower appetizer (a little spicy, but very good). Liked the udon noodles with chicken and bok choy, although a little less red chili pepper would have suited my tastes better (good for those who like a bit of zing to their food). The lettuce wrap chicken was well worth the 20-minute wait. Finished with the lemon ginger mousse, which was very light. The fortune cookie on the mousse was fresh and crisp, so good that some thought it might have been baked at Joanne Chang's Flour Cafe and Bakery. The finish was extra nice, with a red lucky envelope with chocolates accompanying the check, an orange at each table (signs for good fortune in the New Year), and red decorations hanging in the restaurant to create a festive setting. Good choice for the start of the New Lunar Year of the Fire Horse!

The interior is very cool, cozy, and the cool red paint design on the glass windows makes it all feel very charming and comfortable. We did have a bit of a wait for our table despite having reservations. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share between the 4 of us - scallion pancake, bourbon chicken wings, spicy salmon rolls, pork belly buns, sliced beef, eggplant, hot n sour soup, golden potato and lemongrass soup. I think my favorite of those was the eggplant dish - perfectly cooked and flavorful with ginger and soy. Wings were good too. The soups were nice I liked the hot n sour one. The lemongrass soup was a creamy one quite tasty but also quite filling and rich. For entrees, we ordered the roasted soy glazed salmon, the Indonesian fried rice, bok choy and surf and turf noodles. Everything was good. We were all so full and also had leftovers. But decided to order dessert too - everyone loved the vanilla bean ice cream (the menu described it as a parfait) with orange granita - really generous too - 3 scoops of ice cream and the orange sorbet which was more granular than a sorbet more like very finely crushed ice. Very refreshing! The banana caramel crème brûlée was really good too - nice and creamy. The lemon ginger mousse was very creamy but I thought had a bit too much of ginger. I think the deserts were hands down everyone's favorite part of the meal despite everyone pretty much denying they wanted any! Service was very friendly by our server Julie who was delightful! Lovely young lady. Overall great experience!!

There was a great singer, pianist, and sax player to really set the mood. They were super fun, especially when a couple got engaged! To start, I got their ginger martini and while my friend went with a Do-er neat (not a whiskey drinker myself, lol). He tried to order 2 of their beers but they were out of both. My drink came after 15 mins and then we had to remind the waiter about his whiskey. That took another 10. We started with the chicken bao buns and the samosas. Both spectacular! My only complaint is the little size for the samosa size. For our mains we got the short rib and the white butter chicken. The butter chicken could've used a bit more chicken for the price and was frankly a bit tough. The sauce was great. The short rib was flavorful and packed the perfect punch. Dipping the garlic naan in both sauces was my fav part!! Overall an ok experience. I want to give the restaurant grace because it was very packed but service was poor. I think we had 4 different staff members help us total which probably led to lots of miscommunication.

The restaurant was buzzing when we arrived, but we were seated right away at the last available table. The space felt both lively and cozy, perfect for a date night. Service started a bit slow, but once it picked up, the pacing was excellent. Our server was more hands off, which worked well, letting us settle in and enjoy the night without feeling rushed. We started with the Larb Pork Dumplings, which were beautifully presented with chili lime mayo, fresh herbs, and crispy greens. They were fried perfectly, packed with bright Thai flavors, and the added crunch from the greens made the dish even better. With five dumplings, it was a great portion to share. The one and only bone I have to pick with Black Ruby is that the service, while very attentive, is almost TOO fast. I get that they want to turn tables over efficiently, but the last couple of times I've come, I kind of felt like they were rushing me out. I came here to catch up with a couple friends and our food came almost instantly, before our drinks, and the waitress seemed eager to keep us moving. I think our entire meal was less than 50 minutes. While I'll definitely be back, I think it won't be somewhere I'd bring friends anymore since it's just not enough time for a full conversation.

One of us has a nut and shellfish allergy and they were able to accommodate as best as they could, which I appreciate for an Asian restaurant. We ordered tea, which I enjoyed. We were started off with a cold cabbage in chili sauce and I was pleasantly surprised. It's got vinegar and chili oil, so you have the mix of tangy, spicy, and add to the crunch- Wow. I went home and tried to look up a recipe because I loved it so much. We also shared the wonton with chili sauce which was delicious as well. The boiled chicken wasn't bad but it is a simple cold dish- so don't expect boiled chicken to be a warm dish. The sweet and sour pork was good. Next time, I'd like to try the steam egg and truffle. I probably wouldn't order the chicken again, but give me the cabbage starter and wonton in chili sauce all day, everyday.

The menu is entirely online but food came out quickly after we ordered. Dishes we got: - beef laghman: spiced well and chewy noodles! I liked it, although I was a bit confused if it was Uyghur or Chinese because it tasted very similar to Chinese food to me - Pork dumplings: delicious, you have to get these. They look so boring. They're SO good and there's so many. - Mapo tofu: my mouth was very numb eating this but the tofu was silky smooth. I can only assume it was good but I didn't have much spice tolerance left in me after the laghman.

My favorite dish was the duck noodles. I liked the freshness of the basil in the pesto, and the tenderness and juiciness of the duck. The coconut eggplant was a close second favorite. The coconut flavor was delicious, and I liked the nuts on top for crunch. I also found the ginger cabbage salad to be yummy, but not as much as a standout as the other two dishes.
