Went to Black Sheep for brunch and was very impressed! Highly recommend a reservation, especially on a Saturday morning, we heard people being told the wait was over an hour. Every person I came into contact with was excellent, very joyful service. The vibe is very friendly and the menu has elevated fare without being fussy. While there is no kids menu or advertising of being family friendly, my kids loved the Nutella waffles and were treated with respect by the staff. The brunch risotto was very tasty, with a flavor reminiscent of pimiento cheese. My other fellow diners ordered chilaquiles, chicken & waffles, and biscuits and gravy. One week ago we ate brunch at Black Sheep for the first time. Today we visited for the third time in one week. The food is wonderful , do not skip the pancake battered cheese curds, but the staff and the welcoming, fun atmosphere is even better. Patrick was behind the bar for 2 of our 3 visits and answered our questions and gave suggestions while handling the crowd efficiently. We had Minmosas and Bloodies at our brunch And both were well balanced -boozy but still a day drink Our second visit was for Happy Hour and again, Patrick , Kerry Ann and Caitlyn were busy but keeping things moving behind the bar- all while being attentive and friendly. We had fried green tomatoes- perfectly crunchy and not oily , bacon wrapped dates and a perfect cheese board. Recently had their brunch recommended to me from a friend. Started my order off with a brewdriver (beer and OJ - tastes better than you'd think, haha). Our group split an order of the Nutella Puff Pastries and it was just as desirable as it sounds! As excited as I was to learn their chicken and waffles came with boneless chicken - I had my eye on the eggs benny (I'll have to come back for the chicken and waffles). The eggs Benedict were cooked nicely and oozed when cut into. The hollandaise sauce was flavorful as well! My friend got the breakfast burger and we'll, it looked very filling (and perfect for those recovering from the night before, in need of a little pick me up). Since we sat at the bar, we saw several other meals come out and not a single one looked unappealing. Wait time for a table was 20+ minutes, so we sat at the bar. Black Sheep has been a staple hot spot for me since I moved to Milwaukee. I always loved the tap wine concept, since I am a non-discriminatory wine drinker and love trying new ones. If you do come for wine, definitely get their cheese board, it is superb. I've been here for dinner once or twice and it's not my favorite part of the business, though I think many enjoy it. More recently I tried their brunch and WOW. The Chicken Littles (breaded chicken thigh on house-made buttermilk biscuits with honey butter) were some of the best brunch sandwiches I've ever had. I still dream about them. The staff obviously always changes, but I think it has been hit or miss in friendliness. We popped into Black Sheep on a girls night for some wine and and to just check out a new spot. We snagged a spot at the bar and checked out the menu and decided on a bottle of some red wine-honestly can't remember the name. It was okay, nothing to write home about. The bartender was pretty absent, I am used to a server refilling your glass at wine bars/checking in on if you like it/seeing if you are ready for more or want anything else perhaps. He was pretty chatty with the crowd down the bar but kind of avoided the three of us. Anyways we ended trying one additional glass of wine to try out the self serve station I got a malbec and was not a big fan of the one I chose sadly. Came here on a Tuesday night for the first time in over a year. This place is historically one of my favorite places to eat in MKE and considered a "treat". Unfortunately my entire party was very disappointed with their entrees. The brussels sprouts app was the best thing we had, the wine was good too, but our entrees were lackluster. Also, the menu was substantially cut down from a few months ago and most of our favorites were missing. We asked our server about it and he said this was their "summer menu" which was a huge miss in our opinion. Black Sheep continues to impress me. I've visited twice since my last update, once for brunch and again for dinner. For brunch, my friend and I started with the Pancake Battered Cheese Curds ($8) with maple dipping syrup because they were great the last time I had them. They were great on this visit, too! We ordered the Pork Belly Sandwich ($12) and Corned Beef Hash ($14) as our entrees. The pork belly was perfectly cooked with a great balance of meat and fat, served on grilled artisan bread and with a side of perfectly seasoned house cut fries. The corned beef hash was fantastic! The corned beef and potatoes were cut into large cubes and mixed with diced onions and peppers. A perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned sunnyside-up fried egg rested on top. I also ordered a Bloody Mary. It had a great spicy flavor to it and ample garnish (cheese, pickled green beans, sausage stick, pickled mushroom, pickle slice and asparagus), easily one of the best I've had in town. The service was also great, and I felt we received an appropriate amount of food for the prices. This brunch visit was perfect! Saturday, I went back for dinner with another Yelper. Again we started with the Pancake Battered Cheese Curds because I love them and she never had them. They were perfect again! I ordered the Pork Cheek ($15) and she ordered the Poutine ($14), and we exchanged bites of each. The pork cheek was incredibly tender and flavorful, served with a house made salsa verde and over Basmati rice, which was then served over a few thick cut plantain "fries." The dish was also garnished with thin cut strips of jicama and a little cilantro. The rice seemed slightly sweet, so the natural flavor of the plantain and jicama balanced out the sweet flavor I tasted, but the pork cheek was clearly the star. I loved this dish! The Poutine was served in a cast iron dish, and the serving was very generous. She took half home, even after sharing a bit of it with me. The house cut fries were nicely seasoned and the melted Clock Shadow Creamery cheese curds, house-made southern gravy and chunks of pork belly elevated this Poutine. I want to go back and order one for me, but I'll need someone to share it with since fries don't really reheat well. Who wants to join me? We received great service again, this time from Ashley. I ran into other Yelp friends having pre-dinner birthday drinks, and other friends were there having dinner for a birthday in that group. By the time we left, the place was hopping! Change is good because Black Sheep did a major one and it is awesome! I have always wanted this to be a great restaurant and now I can firmly state that I will recommend them and their updated menu. A group went for brunch and the menu is varied from some traditional items to more trendier ones like the pork belly sandwich. The pork belly sandwich was perfectly seasoned with the right texture....my only complaint is that I wanted more pork belly and a little less slaw. My hubby had the eggs benedict and the hollandaise sauce is probably one of the best I have ever tasted. His comment was "do they put crack in that sauce"? Our friends had the burger and could not stop raving about it. Everything we had was extremely delicious. The service was great with beverage refills but the wait to get the food was a little on the longer side but not horrible. If you look in the dictionary for hipster you will probably find a photo of Black Sheep in there. They have "unisex" bathrooms and the crowd is definitely rockin' the skinny jeans and beard protocol. We also ordered a chicken sandwich that was way over cooked and extremely salty. Definitely over priced for pretty poor quality food. Drinks were decent although I did pay 12 dollars for a 3/4 filled espresso martini. I did like it's black bean appearance. And to include Saturday 4-7 in the happy hour is pretty cool. The menu, I pondered last night, has mostly deep fried stuff. I hope when the menu changes (as I was told by the staff) that they include some lighter options that don't bathe in a deep fryer. Especially on the happy hour stuff. Gave this place 3 tries before I was ready to submit. This is my most favorite place to go in the city in terms of atmosphere. It has the vibe of a much larger city with dim lighting, a long bar, and gigantic windows. However, their food leaves much to be desired based on how much it costs. After eating the hummus plate, pretzels, cauliflower, and burger (not all at once), the best thing on their menu is the late night snack dessert and their drinks. It's a tap wine bar. So says the logo. Black Sheep is all around funky. They've got a great drink menu along with self-pour wine. The server said the apps are not really portioned for sharing and I would agree. Components of the apps are then shared across the hot dogs and other items on the menu so there's not a huge variety to pick from. Two bathrooms are marked as unisex but seem to be men or women inside. It's got a great atmosphere and would make for a great date spot for drinks and chat. That said, I did try some of the food. The standout for me was the short rib. The polenta was way good and went well with the braised meat. The greens that came along with it were exactly the same greens from something else. The website title is named "temp home" and it talks about what it's going to be - a tap wine bar. Come for the drinks, try some eats. read more

I was bummed that this place has lower ratings, because it's an amazing place for happy hour or girls night, but then we ate dinner here last night and I get it. The food just wasn't that great. I'll start with the positives: they have great happy hour and nightly specials. They have amazing atmosphere, with a large bar and upscale seating area. Our service here has always been great, and our service last night was fantastic. Our drinks took awhile to come out and came out after dinner, and we were given free drink coupons to compensate. However, the food itself was mostly just okay, and in the case of our $35 filet entree, SO salty. That's really saying something for me, because I love salt and I put it on everything, health be damned. Really, this was just insanely salty and kind of ruined what would have otherwise been a great dish. Our other small plates were bacon crusted scallops - again, salty! We also had the beef risotto, which was good, but barely had any beef. I'll be back for the drink deals, but it would take a lot to get me to try dinner again after that experience. read more

We came here for lunch on a tuesday(half price apps were nice). It was pretty dead but we had never been here so I did make a reservation online and let the server know when we walked in. Appreciate that they had already set up waters at a table by the window. I can't remember the servers name but he was very nice and did a good job. My partners burger was was good. He asked for medium but there wasn't really any pink, didn't say anything because it was still incredibly juicy and tasted just fine. His side salad was a little lackluster. I think it was just lettuce, tomatoes, and some dressing. I had biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were a tad dense and dry but to be honest I feel like they're like that at a lot of places. The flavor was still great and the sausage gravy on top was fantastic so I enjoyed them. Unfortunately the truffle fries didn't do much for me, the truffle flavor was there but the actual fries just seemed so bland. And I did not like that they used lettuce as a garnish/base, it just got soggy and stuck to the fries. aïoli didn't have much taste to it, seemed more like dipping fries in plain mayo. The wine tap is not over the top: There aren't too many so that it's hard to decide, but they have a good array of choices. This place is great for after dinner cocktails or pre-going out appetizers. Their take-out food is also so great. A lot of dine-in only places have had a hard transition to takeout in quarantine, and their food is soggy and gross by the time it gets home. First off, I know....avocado toast....why would anyone order something they can simply make at home? Well, they got me with pickled shallots and the deep fried coriander seeds. We started with the pancake bartered cheese curds, which sound crazy, but are some of my favorite curds in the city! I'm interested in trying the truffle curds as well. I then got the mushroom melt which was delicious; even my boyfriend who doesn't love mushrooms enjoyed it. The side salad was great as well; the dressing was a lot better than most restaurants house dressings. The outside is dog friendly, so I recommend bringing your dog as well.
