This was a popular brunch spot. We grabbed reservations for 10:15am on a Saturday and they open at 10. When we arrived they had seated us and our server came over with water and a call button on a lanyard. The button was to press when we wanted to order something, however we never got around to using it because we came over very shortly for our drink order and when delivering drinks took our food order. The service here was...fine but we felt extremely rushed the whole time and it ended up being pretty rude overall. We ordered the poutine appetizer and finished almost all of it between the table, but not all of it. We were clearly still working when the server came over and was clearing our plates and then asked if anyone was going to finish the shared plate....but we had no plates of our own anymore. The poutine was tasty. The potatoes could have been a bit crispier but all in all a good dish. I ordered the chilaquiles and they were fantastic. Perfectly crispy chips, well cooked eggs, great flavors- highly recommend. Here's the kicker. After we finished our dishes our server cleared them and immediately brought the check even though it's brunch and we may have wanted a few more mimosas. It was 11:09 and our hostess came over with the "I'm not trying to rush you but we have another reservation waiting for this table." That's the issue, I understand a time limit but you want to turn this table in UNDER an hour? I was annoyed because we all had drinks left to finish. I hadn't been to Black Sheep in awhile, but when a friend suggested it I was really excited to go back! I walked in to get a table and it was SO spread out. There are not many places that I think actually socially distance well with their inside tables, but a Black Sheep 100% does. I felt very far away from every other table. They also had outdoor seating available, it was just a little windy/chilly outside. We were looking to get drinks and apps and were immediately sold with the Monday special, which was a $10 cocktail flight with 4 different cocktails. It was a great deal and it was definitely nice to be able to try a couple different things. We also ordered three different appetizers. I definitely went out of my comfort zone and tried some pretty new things, but I definitely do not regret it. Overall, the food, drinks, and service were amazing. I also want to give a little shout-out for their call button, which was a button on a lanyard that you could push if you needed to speak to your server. I met a friend for lunch on $10.00 burger Wednesdays. Black Sheep, five minutes from my apartment on Freshwater, is a small, but attractive, bar/restaurant that always is packed with smiling people having a great time. This was my first time, and now I know why it's so popular. Not only were our burgers large and delicious, but Patrick our barkeep/server, was engaging and welcoming. He mixed me a wonderful expresso martini, and I didn't even know it's a Milwaukee trendoid cocktail. Patrick handled my musings with aplomb, and we left Black Sheep knowing we will return soon. Well I'm stuffed...with wonderful food and pleasantries! We were so thrilled to find this place for our anniversary. It was super close to our Airbnb and in a really eclectic neighborhood. Booking was easy, and they offered great communication right up to our reservation. Our reservations were for 6:30p on a Thursday night. Street parking was minimal but a few great spots available. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and quickly seated. Our server, Patrick N, was also the wine coordinator. Talk about knowledgeable without being pretentious. He offered us a great selection and proudly showed off their restaurant's newest edition: their state of the art wines on tap machine. Imagine a 7-11 fountain machine lineup but full of wines. He was super attentive to us the entirety of our visit while skillfully managing the other tables. His recommendations were superb and we left super happy. We ordered the Caesar Fried Brussel Sprouts to start. Good lord. I tell ya, you owe it to yourself to give these a try. Super crisp, flavorful and lacking the undesirable funk of a Brussel sprout. My husband ordered the Polenta and Meatballs. The texture of the polenta was incredible. Not mushy or overcooked. The meatballs were hefty and has the perfect about of herb and spice. I had the Orecchiette and wow. The white wine truffle cream sauce was delicate and along with mushrooms and onions really carried this dish. There were pops of lightly cooked spinach that offered a great briny, saltiness to cut the richness of the pasta and sauce. Came here for the Monday night special - $10 cocktail flights. You get to try four different cocktails for just $10! They were moderate in size, probably 7 oz each. Each one had a unique flavor and different alcohol; this is a special for you if you like to try new drinks. The ambience is very cool. Trendy posters line the wall and bathroom. Wine dispensers make the place unique and savvy. Street parking was available; it is free for 2 hrs. I did not try the food but from looking at the menu it seems like Black Sheep has a good variety but it is on the expensive side for an entree. Ok, Black Sheep brunch is KILLER, and I feel like I should have known this sooner?!? I've always known them to just be a wine bar, but was googling brunch spots, and it popped up. Walked in on a Sunday morning at 1145, and got a table for 4 right away, which was awesome, and frankly, hard to come by in Milwaukee. Atmosphere=A+! Super laid back and chill, with high tops, cafe tables, booth seating and bar seating options. Table ordered a round of bloody Mary's, and they did NOT disappoint! Perfect amount of vodka to tomato to spice. The garnish and beer chaser made it well worth $9(see pic for proof!). Menu was hard to pick from! Alot of good options. Table orders consisted of breakfast risotto, classic eggs benedict, a croque madame and breakfast tacos. The poached eggs in the risotto and benedict dishes were absolutely perfect. Risotto was creamy and everything you wanted it to be! Croque was certainly messy, and a good option of you want to split a dish with a friend :) Croque came with really good side sauce...a garlicly mustard aioli that had us all dipping our breakfast fries!! While we didn't order it, we might come back to do the Mimosa Table Service for $25- one bottle of champagne and OJ, can't go wrong there. Service was great, our waitress was friendly and helpful, not pushy at all. Kitchen staff was quick, and all food came out hot and plated beautifully. We saw many mimosas and bloody Mary's out which made for an easy drink choice from our very attentive server. (Also, I'm a fan of the new push call buttons that restaurants are making available, and our server was great about responding to it when we were taking our time deciding what to eat.) We tried the Brunch Poutine for our savory with the Pancaked Cheese Curds and Caramel Apple Puff Pastry for sweets and they were all delicious. I believe it does slightly change seasonally but every time I've had it the risotto has been so, so good! I wanted to like this place, but between the bland and over cooked brunch food and a fairly inattentive waitstaff, it was not the best experience. I want to start off by saying that both the atmosphere and friendliness of Black Sheep and it's employees were great, and it was mostly the meal that left me disappointed. Lately when I've been going to brunch I've been ordering something sweet and something savory. I'm quite thankful I did, because the sweet thing savor(ied) me from having a slightly more disappointing experience. I know Black Sheep has some unique brunch offerings, but this day I was feeling a classic breakfast. Called the "White Sheep," it's your usual eggs, meat, potatoes, and toast. The eggs were over cooked, the potatoes were bland, and the dry toast came with no butter or jam. The egg part I'm a bit more understanding of because I like mine over-medium, and it's real easy to cross over into over-hard. But by the time I was able to get butter for my toast and salt/pepper for the potatoes things had started to get cold overall was not the best meal. The waffle, thankfully, was quite delicious! They use cornmeal to make their waffles and it adds more texture and a unique flavor that paired well with the fruit and syrup. This was the redeeming part of my experience. As for the waitstaff, that may have been partially my fault. I got there after my friends who were given a buzzer to hit when we were ready to order. They didn't seem to understand if it was just for taking our initial order or for follow-up requests like coffee and condiments. I erred on the side of not being an annoyance and waited for our server to come around, which was rarely. After they reversed my coffee order of sugar, no cream, it took a while to get what I had asked for. While my waitstaff woes may have been self imposed, there was nothing I could do about the lack-luster meal. BUT, with such a great atmosphere and unique meal options, I will definitely be back to try something else and will update this when I do! read more

Visited Black Sheep MKE last night for the first time and glad we did. I had heard quite a bit about Black Sheep so I was very glad we could make it here finally. The ambience is amazing and the bar space is huge. The seating is very cool too. We went there just for drinks so say at the bar and our bartender attended to us immediately. They have a cool Wine machine (for lack of a better word I will call it a Wine Vending Machine) which pours you wine based on the ones you chose. The bar tender gives you a card and you can fill in different types of wine using the WVM. There are different sizes of pours you can do but almost all the pours are very expensive for the size. For half a glass it's $12!! For the smallest pour (it's about $3-$5). Unfortunately there wasn't any tasting pours for you to do so that you can finally get the one you actually like. The ambience was so amazing that I am already looking forward to coming back next time for dinner. Parking is a hit or a miss depending on when you go there. Came on a Friday evening and was immediately charmed by the wide windowed and candle lit interior. Our server was prompt and lovely in every way. We began our evening with Manhattans, which came on the rocks. A traditional Manhattan is served up (which is how I prefer it) and I honestly didn't think to make the distinction when ordering (my bad). I will do so next time. Beyond the unusual presentation, it was a well made cocktail with quality ingredients. We ordered their hummus for our starter, which was lick-the-plate delicious (I mean, I didn't actually lick the plate, my people...but, you know what I mean. The sort of hummus than when you've run out of veggies and pita to dip in it, you're left wondering if it would be entirely inappropriate to take to it with your spoon? Seriously. That good.). A couple of us then opted for their Friday night fish fry, which was solid. Another in our party went for their cheeseburger, which she quite enjoyed (it looked fantastic!). Went to Black Sheep for brunch and was very impressed! Highly recommend a reservation, especially on a Saturday morning, we heard people being told the wait was over an hour. Every person I came into contact with was excellent, very joyful service. The vibe is very friendly and the menu has elevated fare without being fussy. While there is no kids menu or advertising of being family friendly, my kids loved the Nutella waffles and were treated with respect by the staff. The brunch risotto was very tasty, with a flavor reminiscent of pimiento cheese. My other fellow diners ordered chilaquiles, chicken & waffles, and biscuits and gravy. I've been here twice and both times the food has been...ok. Today I came in with a friend for lunch. We were greeted promptly by a friendly waiter who seated us. Atmosphere is very nice, cool decor. The menu looked really delicious, as did the drinks menu. We both ordered mimosas and enjoyed them. Our food was average. I had a bacon/egg/cheese bagel sandwich with potatoes on the side. The sandwich was mid. The potatoes were way too seasoned and super salty. My friend ordered the chilaques and I think she thought they were ok. No raving from either of us about the food. We didn't have many demands of the waiter. He did a great job filling our water, etc. we definitely weren't demanding customers and we appreciated that we were able to sit and eat and talk for a while and we weren't interrupted or neglected. We got our bill and we were a little surprised that a 20% tip had been added. We paid it, kind of a bummer because the waiter probably would have gotten more than $9 if he had taken his chances....I'm super curious if this is just what black sheep does or if the waiter has the option to allow customers to tip based on service. Either way, it was a bummer. I wouldn't have minded going back to the restaurant, even though it's definitely not outstanding, but a fun place. The four of us all got different entrees and drinks and enjoyed them all. The bistro steak was good, and the Chef's Burger I ordered was tasty though a bit dry. It came with crispy onions, mushrooms, maybe something else (I forget) and that seemed to be about it; some type of sauce, or more of it if it did have some, would have been welcomed. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was tasty. Seems everyone has a version of this nowadays and I usually like them, never thought I'd be into Brussels sprouts! The bacon wrapped dates were great, I love dates and I love bacon, so bringing the two together is something you know I'll love! My wife got the elote risotto substituted with chicken for salmon and liked it, but I wouldn't say loved it. The "winner winner" chicken dinner was ok, though my friend didn't rave about it. Nothing was "wrong" with it but the chicken didn't seem to be a huge winner for him. We didn't try using it, but they have an interesting "serve yourself" wine bar that takes a credit card and then you select your own wine. Might be neat to try someday. I forget the name of a cocktail I had that everyone who sipped it really liked. It had passion fruit and bourbon in it and was a big hit. Three stars is generous for Black Sheep, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. A friend suggested this place, so three of us went and sat out on one of the patio tables in front. I'd say we got there at 7:15 and finished at 8:45 so that gives you a timeline of how long things took. First impressions of Black Sheep were positive. The host was friendly and accommodating. Black Sheep relies on QR codes, so you scan the code and look at the menu on your smartphone. Honestly, I'm not a fan of this, but it seems to be the trend everywhere--it served its purpose. What I didn't like was the funky (and limited) menu. You have a chicken sandwich or burger option for $15, two salad options at about $21 when you add protein, and the other dishes were $21-$29. This alone would have been fine, but the menu "updates" in real time. Let me explain this: when a dish "sells out" it is no longer available and "SOLD OUT" appears next to the menu item. By the time the waiter got back to us (sloooooow), BOTH options in which I was remotely interested, sold out, which was rather disappointing since the menu was so limited in the first place. One of the sold out items was one of the two salads--the good option. The other salad was a mushroom salad with smatterings of odd things in it. Hard pass. So two of us ordered the densely breaded fried chicken sandwich which came with some pickled onions, ranch dressing, and a very sloppy, soggy brioche bun. I had to cut it with a knife and eat with with a fork, because there was no way to pick up this wet sock of a sandwich. I had the dressing on the side, and it was still sopping wet. The flavor was "just okay" for me; nothing that "wowed" me. I honestly would have preferred a Chick-Fil-A sandwich to this, and no, I'm not kidding. You could opt to get it with fries or a small misto side salad, and I opted for the salad--it had a nice, light citrusy flavor. Our friend had a pasta dish with a cream sauce. He said it was rich, and described it as "good" but he didn't finish it. It was $24. His Tom Collins was $11. My soda was $3, my bf's beer was $7. The waiter was friendly. Before we even asked, he explained that the loooooong wait was because they had a large party inside that had finally just finished. We realize that an establishment cannot predict when they will have a large party, and on a Monday night nonetheless. While unfortunate, this is forgivable. Dinner for three. Two sandwiches, one plate of pasta, a soda, a beer, and an alcoholic beverage: $85 with tip for a pretty mundane, slightly bland meal. It wasn't a disaster, but it wasn't great.
