Eh. I had dinner here on Friday night and I don't know that I'd return. The restaurant is drop dead gorgeous-- exposed beams, large windows, well set and appointed tables. I saw another review that you could have a wedding here and I agree. The service was nice-- we had two servers-- one sister training the other? I attempted to order a drink twice-- they had neither in stock-- before getting a Diet Coke. The big area of opportunity here is the food. My husband ordered the scallop risotto, which came... wet. It looked like rice swimming in water-- the flavor was similar, unfortunately. The cook on the scallops ranged widely in the dish. I ordered the salmon-- the cook on the salmon was nice but the quinoa was inedible, as were the veggies it was served with. Our meal was late and it felt like the food was held over from earlier preparations. We got the bread pudding, which was fine-- but the proportion of ice cream to pudding ratio was way off. The restaurant has so much potential but the food is the big problem to solve for, in my opinion. read more

We'll preface this review by saying that an experience this poor usually starts with ownership or management and trickles down to the staff. Who knows what the employees have to deal with on a day-to-day basis to result in service this bad. We were extremely disappointed with our experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff came across as rude and unwelcoming. We asked if we could sit at one of the tables closest to the waterfall, and the response was simply, "Well, it's dirty." Mind you, about 90% of the restaurant was empty. We expected something like, "No problem, give us a moment to clean it off." We're very easygoing and would have completely understood waiting a few minutes. Instead, that interaction set the tone for the rest of the meal. We even pitched in to help the bussing staff. When our waitress finally returned, she immediately said, "Oh, you don't have menus? You forgot them. I know I already gave them to you along with your place settings." Apparently it was a set-your-own-table experience. At that point, it almost felt like we were expected to bring our own service as well. The food quality was underwhelming--We've had better charcuterie on a plane--especially considering the prices. Several ingredients that were listed as part of the dishes were missing. When we asked the busser about it, she said she would check with the kitchen, but she never returned with an answer or any follow-up. Honestly, we would have expected the server to check back regardless, but other than taking our initial order, she never returned to our table, even when we tried to wave her over. So yes no one came back after our food was served to ask how everything was, whether we needed anything, or to address the missing ingredients. Once our order was delivered, we were completely forgotten. Good service means checking on your guests, addressing concerns, and making sure they're enjoying their meal. None of that happened during our visit. When we finally approached the manager, the first response was, "Well, did you eat any of the food?" Yes--we each had a couple of bites of the kale Caesar because we were starving, despite it being served without the advertised pork belly, which was the main ingredient. We had already tried to address our concerns in real time, but no one ever followed up. We're far from people who leave negative reviews. In fact, we think this is only the second bad restaurant review we've ever written. The experience was simply that disappointing. Overall, the combination of rude service, poor management, disappointing food quality, missing ingredients, and a complete lack of follow-through made for an incredibly frustrating dining experience. Unfortunately, we can't recommend this restaurant, and we won't be returning. The view is absolutely gorgeous, but you're better off grabbing a sandwich somewhere else and enjoying it from the nearby bridge. read more

Came here to celebrate a birthday. Blackbarn Hudson Valley is a beautiful venue that has the potential to host weddings and great place for date nights and celebrations. Even though it is a classy setting with views of the dam in the outdoor seating area, they are also very family friendly. They have a kids menu and their drinks came with cute plastic cartoon straw cups. The $17 option comes with ice cream for the kids too. This place could have easily gotten 5 stars if the food wasn't all overly salty (even my kids didn't even eat their fries). It's a pity because everything was plated so beautifully. Their octopus appetizer was not fresh and their ahi tuna was overcooked. When our waiter took our order he didn't ask what our kids wanted to drink even though a drink came with the kids, and we were charged $4 for each when we ordered them drinks. They quickly corrected it when we pointed it out but we also had to remind them about the kids' ice cream (which they mixed up the kids' order too). They did waive the cake cutting fee as we had a party of 10. The only dish that was enjoyable was their roast chicken with black rice. Nevertheless, it is still a nice place to visit if you want a place to relax with a beautiful atmosphere and welcoming to families. The staff were all very friendly and kind. read more

Pros: Beautiful venue, amazing view of the little waterfall outside, great service from the staff. If you stay at the hotel you get a little voucher for a free wine for dinner or cocktail for brunch (per guest). I thought, wow what a great deal! It gets you in the door. Cons: Food. The meal fell short. Management didn't train staff on menu details, not blaming the server but if I ask details like the brand of ice cream or about the coffee I'd hope they knew where things were sourced from. (This is coming from someone who was a server and had to know these details, so don't come for me!) We ordered the charcuterie board which was pretty good. Then it kinda went downhill. My vegetable lasagna was...strange. Some bites were good, then after a while I thought...is this even pasta? The dough was thick like baked pizza bread with chunks of vegetables loaded in layers. Was it homemade pasta? If so, it was awful. The sauce for the crispy salsa verde half chicken was too vinegar-y. The black bean salsa was black beans with mashed avocado? Like a guacamole sauce? Big sigh. Next, dessert--even though the server recommended the peachy empanadas we chose the ice cream sandwich flight. It arrived, 3 ugly little sandwiches. I thought, maybe it'll taste deliciously homemade! Hopeful, I took a bite of the middle one and gagged. I said, maybe it's not my flavor. Next sandwich. Took a bite, discreetly spat it out. The server apologized profusely when we told her it was no good--I did feel bad. She didn't make it, not her fault. So she offered us something else. We chose her recommendation--the peachy empanadas. Oh boy! Listen...Peaches are in season, why are the peaches in this empanada crunchy??? The empanada dough was crispy outside and raw and doughy inside. When you bite it it stretches. The ice cream was great though. Tasted like vanilla haagen-dazs. I asked, is this haagen-dazs? She wasn't sure. Ayiyay, this is a note for management. Anyway, empanadas were also a bust. I was ready to leave so we paid and left. The chef and pastry chef attended CIA, I had high hopes for this beautiful restaurant. If I ever come back it will be for a cocktail and the view. Maybe brunch. Maybe not. Just left this nightmare of an experience at this location on August 16th 2026. I took my wife here for her birthday dinner. The crab cakes were cold and tasteless and my wife's chicken sandwich was freezing. We had the waiter return the sandwich to the kitchen only to have it returned to us 5 minutes later. The chicken sandwich had been placed in the microwave resulting in boiling hot coleslaw and a scalding plate. Sent it back and asked for the check. I have dined at the Blackbarn location in the city and thought the Hudson Valley location would be great to dine for our 10 year wedding anniversary, but i was truly wrong! -When entering the space the smell was not pleasant. -While standing at the hostess stand (which was messy/disorganized) was passed by a waitstaff 2x and was never acknowledge, by this time a few minutes have passed. -Reservations not found in system though I had confirmation on my phone -1st table the manager wanted to seat us was next to a fireplace with no fire and it was chilly -2nd table option from the manager was next to a large party with multiple children under the age of 10. ***Manager totally clueless*** -3rd table finally was proper! -My cocktail from the bar was poorly made...there was more ice vs. liquid. When the manager had them to remake, the bartender DID NOT only added more bitters that made it worse. I would NOT recommend this location to anyone who wants to celebrate a special moment with someone. I would also recommend this location come to the city to shadow the staff of the NOMAD location to learn what dinning experiences should look like! read more

The food was SO fresh and beautifully prepared. Everything we ate was exceptional . The grilled octopus was lick your plate good as was the mushroom toast. I had an amazing sweet potato salad , honestly flavorful. Everything top to bottom ( cake too) was over the top in taste. This used to be the Diamond Mills tavern, where my wife and I got married. After a partnership with a restaurant in the city, they now rethemed it as Blackbarn; I don't really understand why as the place was always crowded, and they kept the same chef, but I digress. As the name suggests, they painted a bunch of shit black. I would say it's generally a decor upgrade, although I will always have nostalgia for the previous style for obvious reasons. Went out to try the new place recently. Service is still very good as was in the old days. Also still can't eat outside after dark otherwise you'll get eaten alive by bugs. It's funny how little some things changed, like tables and chairs. Drinks still very good (and strong) too. I got their take on an old fashioned coffee which was heavy on the bourbon however very good. Food came out super quick. I got the scallops with risotto. I would've preferred 5 or 6 scallops instead of 4, however they were good quality and well seared. The risotto was great, and it also came with a chunk of bacon and chunk of mushroom. The bacon was excellent, the mushroom ok but not my favorite. My wife enjoyed her food too. Was it better than the original restaurant? Not really, just different. Would not put it ahead of Miss Lucy's for a nice restaurant in town however would put it ahead Salt and Fire. Likely to be back either way; again, nostalgia. read more

We had stopped here a couple years ago when it was the Diamond Mill Tavern, and loved the setting. We came back this Fall with out daughter's family for a Sunday Brunch before visiting the Suagerties Lighthouse again, and taking a hike on the Esopus Bend Presere The setting is fabulous - overlooking the falls. And it was a warm gorgeous October day. I was a little alarmed at how empty the place was at noon, but by the time we left at 1:30, it had picked up. The food is actually very good., and brunch is not cheap but given the massive size of the portions price-conscious folks could easily share. The starter of Egg and Chese sliders was terrific, and THREE mini English muffins stacked with scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese would make a full meal for any normal person. The edges were well-cooked, the bacon crisp and smoked - amid the sliders didn't disassemble when you bite into them, a pet peeve. The pumpkin toast was a bit less wonderful - the large slice of sourdough bread spread with our plain butter, and brie, with arugula and beets was a bit soggy - the bread needed more time in the toaster. My Huevos Rancheros main was enough to feed an entire hungry Mexican farm crew. Three large crispy tortillas, loaded down with 3 fried eggs, cheese, piled pork, refried beans, cheese, pico de gallo.... I barely made it through one third. It was absolutely delicious, though the crispy tortillas were impossible to cut. Ultimate messy finger food!! The Waffle. & Fried chicken was a hefty portion... the waffle semi-savory with a lovely scent of rosemary.. covered with syrup and the accompaniments, it was a good sharing dish and immensely satisfying. The Shrimp & Grits were likewise weel-prepared. The grits cheesy and creamy, the shrimp smoky and the perfect foil. A hefty serving for one hungry person. The only negative was a carryover from our earlier visit. We love sitting outside on the terrace to gaze at the falls and absord the sound of falling water. Unfortunately the resident Yellowjacket's love to nibble on outr mimosas and whatever else if available. Sitting inside would solve this problem, but the deck is the point!! The owners need to make some effort to control the stinging insect problem - no one got stung, but it is very disconcerting and I am allergic, so outright panic-inducing at moments. If not for the Yellowjacket's, I would give this 5-stars... remember it is in Saugerties, not Manhattan, and the standard of food is outstanding for the location. Service was friendly, and the place kept clean and all around a fine spot for brunch before of after a hike. I'm sire dinner is good - the ikitchen knows what it is doing!! read more

The main attraction is their gorgeous outdoor deck overlooking a waterfall on the Esopus Creek. Truly lovely spot for a drink or a meal. We had stopped by for a drink many years ago when it was under different management, and decided to come back for lunch. You expect the food to be solidly mediocre at a place like this, and I'd say this was a step above that. In fact I'd say it was good, although not anything I'd seek out based on food alone -- you're here for the view. My favorite dish was the wild mushroom toast. We also had the spicy watermelon salad -- actually spicy! -- and a chicken sandwich served on a nice sourdough bread. Good mocktails. After our spa day at Waterside Spa, we treated ourselves to a date night at BLACKBARN Hudson Valley which is a farm to table restaurant located at Diamond Mills Hotel. Their food and drinks were SO tasty. Trust me and order the homemade bread to start. We shared the Crispy Seared Octopus and I needed to try the Butternut Squash Ravioli because they have a chef who focuses just on ravioli. My boyfriend got the Eight-Hour BBQ Beef Ribs which were fall off the bone, and of course we had to try the Truffle Ricotta Gnocchi which was super creamy and delicious. I cannot understand the lukewarm reviews. We are a very food focused large family and everyone from grandpa to our 20 month old loves it. This restaurant is wonderful, we eat here pretty much every weekend during ski season. The food is excellent, varied menu, something for everyone. Vegetarian options, gluten-free options, children's menu are all included and with delicious and varied choices. Everything is always prepared perfectly. The room is huge, comfortable and spacious and beautiful. More importantly, the service is never less than stellar, so lovely and friendly. I strongly encourage dining here anytime. read more

My wife's birthday is 12/24 so it's always a challenge to find a nice place to go to celebrate. Blackbarn was open on Christmas Eve and did not disappoint! This isn't a jeans and sneakers kind of place and is certainly not inexpensive, but the food, ambiance and service were excellent! I'd put it on the same level as a a nice steakhouse like Ruth's chris downstate. My wife had the scallops and I went with the Faroe island salmon. Both were prepared perfectly. Only reason for less than 5 stars was the lack of options for the teenage set. Not quite an adult palate but too old for chicken fingers. Definitely recommend. One last note, it's a bit dark and while the street signage is adequate for the hotel finding the entrance for the restaurant was a little tricky. read more

Totally disappointing, hair in the lobster roll, no dressing on the salad, loaded tater tot's, not loaded. I understand an imperfect service but this was so sub par, snotty attitude, had to be " coursed out" which really just means- we want to obligate you to buy an entree. She helped with giving us some great recommendations and she kept us laughing the entire night! The atmosphere at black barn is not what one would expect for a farm to table Hudson valley experience. The service was slow, so slow that 3 out of the 6 guests had to go to the bar to order their own drinks. It took over an 1 hour to get entrees in a not so busy restaurant. We had to ask for bread for the table, which turned out to be the better part of the meal. The scallops arrived swimming in oil, lacked basic seasoning and overall were not flavorful. When the bill came they charged us for things we did not ask for and did not accept, as well as a drink that the waitress said she would take off the bill. When this information was brought to the manager she questioned our integrity by saying she would verify that we did not receive the items we were billed for. We have eaten at black barn with previous positive experiences so this was extremely surprising . The manager went as far to say we should never come back again. We stopped here just for drinks as we had already eaten, and because the place looked very cool. They have a large bar, a large open dining area, and a very large beautiful outdoor seating area overlooking Esopus Creek and a very large group of conjoined waterfalls. I had a Bloody Mary and the wife had a Vodka and grapefruit juice. Both drinks were presented beautifully, with several types of garnishes in the Bloody, including celery, olives, peppers, and a specially flavored salt on the rim - fantastic! The vodka & grapefruit included some fresh violets floating in the glass (edible) adding a dash of wonderful color and whimsy to the drink. Both drinks were skillfully crafted by our bartender "Hawaiian Brian", a refreshingly friendly and attentive server. One of the big draws to this area is the almost constant horse riding activities (English) that are occurring around the immediate area. The venue itself is a beautifully designed space, with killer views overlooking the river from the very large dining room and outdoor deck. This place would be wonderful for a wedding or other big event for up to about 100 people. The menu is widely varied, and fairly unusual. We went for Thanksgiving 2023. The room is beautiful and host and waitstaff were okay (except for a manager reaming out some rookies within six feet of our table, not welcome). Let me cut to the chase, though--the food was as if they had purchased dozens of "party style" entrees, appetizers, side dishes and desserts and served everyone everything. I mean, each individual received a plate with prime rib, gravy, turkey, stuffing, pasta, tomato sauce, fish with its own stuffing...and the worst possible quality of everything. You couldn't see what was on the plate, much less get a forkful without making a mess. The breads also seemed to be from Costco. The charcuterie board had been pre-assembled and stored in the chill blaster. I mean, the board itself was cold enough to serve ice cream. There weren't any fresh fruits or vegetables. Now, maybe this sounds like heaven to you, but you won't want to pay the prices we did. And, honestly, If you're not a Great Dane you won't like being served this way. I don't know if they thought the beauty of the room would make people forget what they were eating, but it didn't do so for me. I'd like to point out here that Costco sells many yummy things, but none of them were involved in this dinner. I can't believe Blackbarn Hudson is still in business. read more

Other than that, the brunch was a huge disappointment. my husband had eggs Benedict which was burnt so much that a steak knife could t cut through it to eat it. I ordered hueveros rancheros which were described as fried eggs. the yolks weren't cooked at all and the egg whites were runny - I cannot eat eggs under cooked. I had not even a quarter of the meal. there was no seasoning in the pico de gallo, absolutely no taste to the food at all. so terribly disappointed. we have eaten at this restaurant at least 50 times when it was Diamond Mills and it never disappointed. we will not visit again. My wife and I love coming up to the Hudson Valley Area. We have been looking for a place to take monthly date nights to and came upon Blackbarn. We started our meal at the bar with cocktails. Marquerite who is now our favorite bartender made my wife and I the perfect Manhattan. My wife and I come up from the Bronx and even in that area, you can't find a Manhattan made so perfectly. Our WONDERFUL bartender made some suggestions for what to eat and she absolutely nailed it. We love the Sea Bass,. Now we have returned about 5 more times except we now come up with our good friends who also come up for Marquerite's Manhattan. We love the food. We love the waterfalls. The staff is so attentive. But most of all, we love your bartender. She keeps us laughing and makes everyone feel so at home. Our friends and I will continue coming up for our monthly visist religiously. Today (Mother's Day) was our first time here. Our server was very kind, but our food was quite awful. Avocado toast was on very dry and thick bread that was impossible to cut through. French toast was stale and cold. Eggs Benedict was cold and not really edible. For the first time in my life, we took our dessert to go because everything else was so disappointing. $30 for 4 chicken fingers, water and two tiny scoops of ice cream for children. $65 per person for each adult who couldn't finish any part of their meal. One of the worst meals I've had in a long time. To start w/ , the waiter walked away while I was speaking to him. There was a bus person who only poured water and another who only turned tables. Between courses, we sat w/ dirty plates for too ling until w/ flagged a competent bus person (who was great-the star is for him and him only). Our food was so salty that my lips were burning. The black barn is a beautiful restaurant and has the most amazing outdoor patio. The food was excellent. I had the black Seabass, and my wife and her parents had the grilled scallops over risotto. My son and I attempted to dine here recently one late Sunday afternoon. We waited by the hostess desk for a while, watching two staff members talking as one customer was sitting at the bar. A young man came out and lead us to a table eventually. My son said he had looked at us as we stood waiting but continued talking until he casually strolled over without any urgency. This should have been my first warning things might not go well. We were seated inside near the doors to the outside patio. We were told our server would be over. There were 2 occupied tables outside, one inside and one leaving. We waited and looked over the menu. Long story short we waited 15 minutes without any acknowledgment from anyone. We left.
