During my short trip in Indiana, I swear I got myself something from Blackbird Cafe almost everyday! Everytime I walked in there, I was immediately welcomed with a diverse environment, and an excellent atmosphere. The lighting was dim but also bright enough to clearly see. There were people ranging from high school students to college kids doing whatever they had to do for their classes. I would look over to my right, and there would be books there for anyone to grab and read! There were comfortable couches available for anyone to sit on with a laptop or a book to read. The bathroom was clean and free to use for the public. Don't even get me started on how great the food was! They had sandwiches, delicious soups, and all meals came with a side of chips! However, it took at least 25 minutes to get our food which is the only downside ordering food here. The nice worker apologized for the wait which made the costumer service even better. The coffee and tea were amazing as well, which is why I purchased my own coffee bag with their own product. Not only that, but I also bought a cute coffee mug as well. I heard amazing things about this place and read the reviews, so I was excited to finally try it. The barista was wearing SWEATS and when she grabbed my scone I saw a dozen gnats fly around the display case. There were flies all above the register around the light fixtures and flying around the café and they didn't clean the tables unless specifically asked. The couches are covered in stains, and crumbs. The syrup they used came from a paper carton and was so overpowering that I couldn't taste my coffee. I'm so unbelievably disappointed in this place and as a coffee lover I'm never coming back. Its fresh coffee, but pretty basic stuff you can buy from any gas station (French Vanilla, Columbian, Kona, Highlander Grogg, decaf) The fresh quiche is what you should stick with because the rest of the food you can make better yourself at home. There is no service, only rude cashiers. You do everything yourself. You even fill up your own coffe, just like at a gas station. The cashiers just hand you an empty cup. You clean up after yourself, or just throw your garbage everywhere because the inside of this place is run down AF. I keep seeing the description "cozy"? They're politely saying the furniture and decor was acquired via dumpster diving 25 years ago. There are bite/chew marks on the tables, I imagine from raccoons or opossums gnawing at it in the dumpster, and a bunch of the chairs are held together with tape. read more

I have gone here several times over the past few years. My friend also used to be neighbors with the owners. I like the rough brick interior and set up. Although sometimes it's hard to find a space to work in if all the tables are taken. The baked items are always great and I like the big selection of flavors for drinks. The food I've had has been okay good for an occasional lunch or quick dinner. The downside is Valpo parking. Super busy when I walked in to pick up my carry out order (good sign). I got the pastrami Reuben with a side salad and a homemade Oreo. So good! Staff at register seemed inexperienced. We were not asked if we were a rewards member and it had to be entered after the fact and was only given credit for one drink. Order came out in a timely fashion; however, we had to ask at least twice for one of the drinks. What was more disturbing was what was witnessed while there. One couple left because the line wasn't moving. One person ordered and after waiting for too long had to leave and said he would come back later to pick up his drink. We are pretty sure a man came in a filled his own large cup without paying. We told at least two people the highlander grog was out and there was no effort to replenish it while we were there. We thought there were only two staff when we came in but came to realize there were actually 4 at some point but service did not seem to improve. Staff didn't seem to work well as a team. I love this place. I always get the cobb salad and I get it at least once a week. The balsamic glazed pecans are addictive and their balsamic vinaigrette is amazing. Nice atmosphere. Had the chili and the smoked salmon wrap. Both were very good. Chili tasted a bit like Cinnimon which I liked a lot and the corn bread that came with it may have been my favorite part of the meal. This was my go to restaurant that I told all my friends about, except lately the staff has been rude. I took a girlfriend there about 2 months ago and she bought an Americano and she wanted to buy some ground coffee, I said go try the hazelnut I think you will like it. And went to put like 1/2 inch of coffee in her cup to taste and the employee, before asking any questions, told her loudly, she could not have a refill on her coffee since she bought an Americano. She walked away dumped out her 1/2 inch of coffee and said to me, please do not bring me here again. I was so embarrassed. I haven't seen the girl since and I forgot her name. Dark hair, darker complexion and a bit chubby (in my opinion, and looked alittle older than the other gals. Then at the popcorn fest the girl taking orders from everyone was also very stern and made you feel very rushed and she was NOT friendly at all. A lady asked her why they were closing at noon and she relied "we, as employees want to get out of here" "The owners had nothing to do with it!" Thought that was abrupt. I know good help is hard to find but this happens with the girls that are taking orders too many times. The girls making the food have been delightful. I like the one with the dark hair that wears a ponytail.. real nice person. Been going more to Uptown Cafe, such nice people and great food. The employees at Backbird should check it out!! read more

So, I'm new to Yelp, but I use it so often I figured I'd go ahead and start reviewing! So, here it goes, I come in for my monday coffee every week for the past year or so, TRY THE HAZELNUT! Its maybe the best I've ever had! Their brand is roasted with real hazelnuts, so it does't taste too sweet or syrupy. BBC also serves up freshly baked, amazing, scones. A warm cinnamon scone really makes my morning! Every week I stop in their morning girl is there, and its really nice and refreshing how it seems she knows everyone by name and takes the time to be friendly and talk to each and everyone who stops in. other pros +HUGE bagels, with amazing homemade veggie cream cheese +If you have time, you get a free refill! no where else does that anymore! Their competition down the road charges a whole dollar! NO WAY! + It always smells like cookies, who doesn't love that! read more

My wife and sister in law love their food especially their sandwiches and pastries. Apparently they also make a mean Mocha frapp. It is, however, usually occupied by hipster D-bags so beware of that if you venture in. You will likely hear some local hipster talking about his drawing folder he carries everywhere or how people that sit around starbucks are slaves to a capitalist machine. Went to Blackbird today and was I ever impressed with the quality of the food. Had a potato and chick pea soup which on paper doesn't sound great, but was fantastic. Had the artichoke, goat cheese and sun-dried tomato panini which was great as well. The servers are friendly and accomodating, but unfortunately it's slow to get your food here if you go during lunch hour. It is warm and inviting and looks like they have yummy dessertss as well.
