I spent a summer working in Valpo, and one thing I needed was a good coffee shop in which to spend a few hours on my day off. I found this place with a maps search and was really happy with my toasted 4-grain bagel and hummus. The coffee was great--reasonably priced, free first refill, and most importantly IN A REAL MUG. I can't tell you how much I appreciate drinking my coffee out of a mug. Disposable cups stink for environmental and experience-related reasons, and a mug of coffee just makes me smile. I ended up coming back four or five more times, bringing friends in different combinations to try different sandwiches and soups and to drink a bunch more coffee. I even stopped in Valpo on my way home from the dunes to have one last bagel. A lovely place! read more

Folks, the iced latte is seriously on par with what I get in New York City. Roundness, dimension, strong espresso, and they use a vanilla unsweetened almond milk which adds a lovely touch. The baked goods are consistently good as well (and I'm both a dedicated home baker and worked at a bakery in the city), fresh and simple. The appeal is in the no fru-fru theme. The quality of service at Blackbird is a crapshoot at any given time. I've had baristas be super friendly and efficient on one day and the same ones not even acknowledge my presence for 10 minutes when I was the only person in line on another day. That being said, it's a hip, versatile joint that attracts all sorts; a typical indie coffee shop atmosphere. Every drink and meal I've had here has been savory and enjoyable. It feels a bit roomier than it's neighbor, Cornucopia, but I imagine it's about the same amount of space. I enjoy sitting at the bar facing the window, allowing me to people watch as the town strolls by. Sometimes it's noisy, other times it's peaceful. Either way, on a rainy day like today, its coffee coated scent draws you in like a siren and you're immediately comforted by the warmth when you walk in. They have a great display of various delicious teas on the shelves near the board games. Read the description, grab a jar of your choosing and make sure to take it with you to the counter. Wi-Fi available, and for those anti Internet, the shelving lining the walls are filled with books. Check out local art circulating on the walls, take a peak at the local happenings on the announcement board, forget your bad attitude at the door, open your mind and relax. It's a "not your mother" type of place, so drop your dirty plates in the bin as you walk out the door. Not a totally unclean establishment, but definitely worn in. I really wanted to love this place and will give it another chance. I went in yesterday and the first thing that hit me was the stale air. I guess the air has been broken for at least a couple of weeks and it was waaaay too stuffy. I was meeting a friend so I stuck it out. I had the "Thai" chicken soup and thought it was a good soup but I'm not sure where the Thai came in. There was no spice, no fish sauce and no lemongrass to taste. If there was curry in there it was faint. It was more like a minestrone with flaked coconut. But like I said, it was a good bowl of soup just didn't fit the description. With all that said, I like the old school coffee shop vibe so I will give it another try. I wanted to try the coffee but once again...it was too hot in there for soup and coffee. My only recommendation would be to clean up the book wall a little bit and invest in some fans if your air is going to be off for more than a day or two. read more

The atmosphere is fantastic (music every Monday, artist exhibitions on the walls, fragrant tea, comfy couches), the food is amazing (the pear, ham, smoked gouda, and honey mustard panini is my favourite), and the staff is incredibly welcoming. Let's start w the good stuff. Coffee and desserts are exceptional. But that's where it ends. We order soup, 3 sandwiches and other misc. None of the sandwiches were good. One had old guacamole. My ham and apple sandwich was saturated in yellow mustard. And I really like yellow mustard but the apples had zero flavor and the ham was drowning in yellow. And the worst part was the service. As a business owner, I know that's the most important part. The service was poor and unfriendly. What a major major disappointment. read more

Second time here and it was great both times. My first visit I had an amazing vegetarian soup and hot apple chai drink. It was my first time trying a flavored chai such as apple and I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth and delicious it was. The soup was full of flavor like it had been cooking all day long. On my second visit, I tried another hot chai with almond milk and the vegan 'b'LT. wow! Two more great options. The sandwich had wonderful flavor. This is our second favorite place for coffee and snacks - sandwiches or pies! Fabulous pies! Not so much with regard to their cookies - they are good, but their other baked items are good. Their mixed coffees and frappes are great. Their regular coffee is also great - and tea is fine. The environment, when its not peak time, is relaxed and casual. Like the coffee houses in Chicago used to be when I was in college the first time... long before starbucks. Absolutely love to stop in this place - and great place to do your work if it's not peak hours. Not a family place, but friendly to well behaved children and youth. Major college hangout nowadays. I don't come to Blackbird very often, but I guess I can say I'm happy when I do. It's one of the very few places I can go to get lox on a bagel and it's definitely GOOD, too. I'm not a coffee drinker, but they've got a massive selection of drinks to choose from, so I've never been unhappy in that respect. I like the way it's set up, that you can sit down anywhere and have your food brought to you, but I don't like most of the people behind the counter. Some of the girls are awfully rude. I know it's a hip coffee place and all, but there's no reason to act so pretentious towards people who are giving you work in the first place. read more

During my short trip in Indiana, I swear I got myself something from Blackbird Cafe almost everyday! Everytime I walked in there, I was immediately welcomed with a diverse environment, and an excellent atmosphere. The lighting was dim but also bright enough to clearly see. There were people ranging from high school students to college kids doing whatever they had to do for their classes. I would look over to my right, and there would be books there for anyone to grab and read! There were comfortable couches available for anyone to sit on with a laptop or a book to read. The bathroom was clean and free to use for the public. Don't even get me started on how great the food was! They had sandwiches, delicious soups, and all meals came with a side of chips! However, it took at least 25 minutes to get our food which is the only downside ordering food here. The nice worker apologized for the wait which made the costumer service even better. The coffee and tea were amazing as well, which is why I purchased my own coffee bag with their own product. Not only that, but I also bought a cute coffee mug as well. The town of Valparaiso is lucky to have this cafe shop right in downtown! read more
