Very small donut shop next to Target. This is a grab and go place. There are no tables or seating inside. There's barely any room to stand in line to order. The donut flavors are very unique and a lot of them look tasty. Purple Cow is soo good! The raspberry glaze is a perfect pairing to the chocolate cake donut. It reminds me of the Purple Cow ice cream from Richardson's farm but in donut form! This is a must! I also tried the Cookie Milk which was kinda dry and was average. I would come back and definitely get the Purple Cow again! And maybe be adventurous and try another specialty donut. read more

Super cute and unique donuts! When I was here there was an Ube coconut Bismark donut. It was REALLY good. It was big, and it had Ube on the inside, and was coconuty on top. LOVED it. That being said, Blackbird can be a big and wide hit or miss, depending on a few factors. First and foremost, only visit during the morning or before noon. They make a certain amount of donuts for the day, flavors will go fast, and as you can see from many of the reviews here, you'll also want to get them in their prime (when they're still fresh). Choosing your flavor can be a nuisance, as they reserve a visual of each donut in a very small case within the counter that you can only see if you're next in line (a lot of pressure in a short second!). Lines will get out the door during busy hours, so patience is a virtue! Got two doughnuts both different flavors and both purchased at 8am, so relatively early for them...i.e. the doughnuts should have been fresh. I brought home a few cake donuts to take back to Hawaii with me, and granted I was on a plane for 11 hours, I think I'll pass on the cake donuts the next time I'm in Boston. The Everything Bagel Donut was an amazingly soft, savory yeast donut with cream cheese in the middle, and I'm so happy I got to savor it during my time in Boston. The Chocolate Old Fashion was probably our favorite from the three cake donuts that we got. It wasn't too chocolatey and held up the best in terms of moistness and softness. The mango chili and lime poppy seed flavors were not super amazing. They tasted as they were supposed to, but they weren't anything special. I loveeee apple fritters so I was ecstatic to se the orange and cranberry fritter here. Logistically I hit up Blackbird last because it was on the way back to my apartment but having now read other reviews, seems like I should've visited Blackbird first if I wanted a shot at the Boston Cream. Nonetheless, I picked out 4-5 donuts for The Boy and I to sample and doubled down on the Everything Bagel Doughnut - which I'm glad I did because it was so good that I was so happy we didn't have to share. The Raised Doughnuts and Cake Doughnuts are all sinfully delicious. While Union Square remains my favorite in flavor, density, texture, Blackbird comes up as a close second. Starting the morning with some Blackbird donuts The donuts I had are the blackbird and ruby chocolate and lavender! The coffee and the donuts were a great to start the day. I went to the store in Fenway, Boston and even though it was really small they did a good job keeping the covid restrictions visible to all customers. There is no place to sit, making it a great drop in, pick up, and enjoy on the go kinda doughnut. I got two donuts - chocolate chip cookie donut (literally a chocolate chip cookie in a donut format) and sweet corn (never heard of a sweet corn donut before). The sweet corn wasn't bad. I was told it would taste like a cornbread with some caramel glaze. Not sure if I can taste either to be honest. However, my husband and I did quite enjoy the chocolate chip cookie donut. I, personally, am a fan of lighter donuts but I think that Blackbird is still worth a try if you're in the area. The storefront is pretty small, so you won't be able to sit inside and eat but there are a couple of cute benches outside. I loveeeeeee doughnuts and question the morality of anyone who doesn't. What's not to love about sugary fried dough filled with or topped with even more sweet goodness? I wanted to love Blackbird because it's such a cute little place, but I thought the doughnuts were just decent. The Cran Grape Doughnut was a classy jelly-filled doughnut. The doughnut was light and fluffy and covered in sugar. But you gotta work pretty hard to get to the chunky jam center. I'm a huge jam-lover and wasn't wowed by the jam here. The Pumpkin Boston Cream was slightly better, but still not amazing. The chocolatey layer was a bit too sweet for my taste, but the Pumpkin cream was awesome! It was the perfect texture and had subtle layers of spices for complexity. Too bad there was so little filling! Overall both doughnuts were good, not great. Of course, being so late in the day, Boston Cream had already been devoured by the lucky/smart people who came early, as had the Marshmallow. I came here with the intention of getting the pumpkin Boston cream and the everything bagel doughnuts, but ended up walking away with cinnamon roll and salted toffee doughnuts. I guess 2 pm was too late for me to get my hands on some of their more popular flavors. The cinnamon roll doughnut and salted toffee doughnut were $3 each. Pretty pricey but somehow still cheaper than other artisanal doughnut shops in the Boston area. The cinnamon roll doughnut bore very little resemblance to an actual cinnamon roll - it's a vanilla cake doughnut with buttercream frosting and dusted with cinnamon sugar. Although I usually like cake doughnuts, this one didn't have any flavor, other than being cloyingly sweet. The salted toffee doughnut is a brioche yeast doughnut with brown butter glaze and flakes of sea salt. I enjoyed the fluffy dough, but the glaze seemed a little off to me. It had almost no sea salt flavor and a weird aftertaste. Overall, I think Blackbird doughnuts are pretty average, especially considering their price tag. A small little walk through shop in Fenway next to Target, my experience here was just a-ok. First of all, it seems like unless you are a morning doughnut person, they are ALWAYS out of the best doughnuts (like the cream filled ones ... my, and I guess everyone else's, favorite... The location is so ideal! Within walking distance of Fenway! I'm always on the lookout for gourmet donut shops when I'm traveling so I was very pleased that Blackbird was just a few blocks away from our Airbnb. We went around 10 o'clock in the morning and there was a line out the door. Thankfully it doesn't take too long to order donuts so we only had to wait about 20 minutes or so. Blackbird Doughnuts specializes in Raised Doughnuts (made with a brioche dough, topped with a variety of house-made glazes, frostings, toppings) and Cake Doughnuts (traditional cake batter with butter, sugar, eggs, buttermilk, sour cream). We ordered one from each category. The Blackbird (vanilla bean old fashioned with vanilla glaze) which is their signature flavor fell a little short for me. I really expected more moisture (tad dry) but the flavor was pretty good. The vanilla flavor really came through. We also ordered their Apple Pie a la Mode Doughnut which was decorated to look like a baseball! (ode to the Red Sox). This doughnut was so cute to look at and filled with an apple pie filling. We didn't care too much for the filling though. We actually only ate half of this doughnut and ended up tossing it because it was overwhelmingly sweet. The cold brew really wasn't much better. It was VERY sour which told me that they are under extracting. My brother makes cold brew regularly at home for me so it's always disappointing when I actually PAY for coffee and end up being disappointed. As far as doughnuts go, I've tasted much better. It was a little on the expensive side also so I would never go out of my way for Blackbird Doughnuts. I also wish they had a better menu board because the shop is very small and the only menu they have is at the front of the line. So you basically have to wait until you're at the front to see what donuts are available for purchase that day. A little inefficient in my opinion. Probably won't be back! Walking around the Fenway area, I noticed that Blackbird Doughnuts had opened another location right next to Target off Boylston. I can't resist a good doughnut (donut?) so I went in. They offered a nice variety of doughnut but I finally settled on the lemon poppy doughnut. The doughnut was rich and dense, but not overwhelmingly so. It was moist and the lemon icing wasn't too sweet or too tart. The perfect balance. My friend ordered the salted caramel toffee (I believe that was the name) and loved it as well. I really wanted to like this place. I heard about how great their donuts were and had high high hopes... that just weren't met. I was crushed. I got the Lemon Poppyseed, Boston Cream, Everything Bagel, and Salted Toffee to split with my friend. Since there weren't tables and chairs inside the store, we took them "to-go" to a coffee shop nearby. Lemon Poppyseed: I could barely taste the lemon flavor and thus didn't think it was tarty enough. This was probably my least favorite out of the four we got. Boston Cream: okay donut. It's basically a Boston Cream cake in donut form! The custard inside was sweet, and the chocolate + custard combo was delicious. I just wish there was more chocolate. Everything Bagel: my favorite! It's really savory just like its bagel doppelgänger. I like the donut form more so than the bagel form though. It was soft with a cream cheese filling rather than chewy like a bagel. Lastly, the Salted Toffee: it was incredibly sweet and not so salty. We actually thought the donuts might've tasted better if they were warmed up a bit but ended up eating them "cold" since we're tourists and didn't have access to a microwave. Summary: nothing special. The Everything Bagel flavor was unique but I could've done without the others. Maybe I got the wrong flavors but I tried a diversity and wasn't impressed. It's like taking a bite into a cloud -Purple Cow - this was the right amount of chocolate. It wasn't too sweet, and the raspberry glaze was a nice complement -Vegan Blackbird - this tasted just like the classic vanilla glazed.
