We recently dined at Blackout Dining in Las Vegas and unfortunately left extremely disappointed. Before the experience even began, I signed a two-page waiver due to allergies and medical concerns. I am also handicapped and take multiple medications, so I made it very clear at check-in that I have a very sensitive stomach. I specifically shared that I don't tolerate fish well but do fine with chicken and steak. At no time did anyone inform me that this is an all-vegan restaurant. That lack of transparency was a huge issue. Soy does not mix well with my medications, and had I known that everything was plant-based and soy-derived, I absolutely would have made a different decision. Instead, I became extremely sick the entire evening once we got home and remained sick into the next day. Another major concern was the food temperature. Every course was served at essentially room temperature. From a basic food safety standpoint, hot food should be served hot and cold food served cold to help prevent bacteria growth. Everything felt like it was the exact same temperature, which was concerning and may have also contributed to how ill I became. The concept of dining in complete darkness is unique and well executed -- it's not something you normally get to do. But between the lack of clear communication about the fully vegan menu, my medical concerns not being properly addressed, and the food temperature issues, the overall experience left me very disappointed. Sara did a great job!! Food: I'm big on technique, without giving the secret menu away, I found myself extremely disappointed with temperature, fry technique, and a few other things. Items that were supposed to be served as hot food items were cold, not room temp, cold, no one wants to eat an entree style hot dish cold. Any item that is supposed to be fried should have a crispy texture, not be saturated in grease and if a finger food it should not fall apart from sogginess when picked up. We were also served a cold item, one that I happen to absolutely love it should be seasoned, and have a slight bite to it, it was complete bland mush in the mouth. These things made a huge difference in the enjoyability of the meal. Flavors: For the most part there was a balance of flavors using acid, fat, salt, and heat.. I always wanted to go here. My friend was grateful for my help so he took us out here, my husband and I. There were 3 of us. This restaurant is one of a kind here in Vegas. I do not know if another of this kind exist here in Vegas. This restaurant is only open limited hours at night. I was told that you need a reservation. They sometime has a discount in Groupon but my friend booked online and paid full price. We can only take picture outside. We are not allowed to take pictures or bring our phones inside. They have lockers outside before you enter their black out dark restaurant. Our waitress was super helpful Guiding us inside and outside the restaurant into the lobby waiting area. There were a couple of groups who were leaving before we enter and all of them enjoyed their experiences. There about 7 course meals. Staff will ask you for any allergies. All their dishes were flavorful. Supposedly they change their menu 3 times a year. I would want to go back again here when they change their menu. There are less than a handful of places in the world that do a blind/pitch black tasting (I can think of Pittsburgh, Paris, and London), so this is a very unique experience. We were intrigued but also a bit nervous, but the staff were very friendly and patient throughout the visit as they guided my friend and me in and out of the restaurant. I don't want to spoil too much, but it's truly so dark and you really hone in on your other 4 senses. The food was a diverse mix of things; some dishes we LOVED and others were mid. Everyone eats the same thing.Please know that the experience is absolutely pitch black, you cannot see anything which was very surprising to me. I've been wanting to try this forever, and it was such a cool and unique experience. Super intimate--no distractions, just pure conversation and connection. Loved that part, especially since I'm usually like a squirrel, all over the place! But honestly, I don't think I'd enjoy it as much with more than one other person. The cute girl outside gave us a tip, keep your eyes closed until you are seated! That really helped to have less anxiety. Our server was sweet, not super engaging which I thought was odd from the other reviews I read. Service seemed slow, and the server did tell us he had too many tables and while at our table called to the front to tell them to give people waiting to be sat to someone else. The wait was okay because I loved my company. Now, onto the food... 7 courses, all vegan (which was fine). The first three? Delicious and I was so excited. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. Courses four and five? Just okay. The sixth? Nope. And the seventh--dessert--was the biggest disappointment. Seriously, who messes up dessert?! That should've been the highlight! For $100 bucks per person, I expected more on the food front. One thing that was fun? The wine pairing with each course--definitely a great choice! I was looking for something kooky to do while in town and stumbled upon BLACKOUT on Yelp, located a bit further out from the strip. Worth the novelty! This was my first time trying this type of experience and would highly recommend to others. It might seem simple, but being in complete darkness felt oddly meditative and intensifying at the same time-- all while dining on mysterious dishes amidst a sea of voices. Very weird. They aren't joking when they say pitch-black-- you are literally in the void, with only the occasional tiny green light emanating from the servers' night vision goggles. I felt like a deep sea creature, observing bioluminescent flecks floating around me. I'm surprised at the reviews who were shocked their menu is plant-based-- this is plastered all over their website. In fact, it was one of the major draws for us (bf is pescatarian, I mostly avoid red meat). We reserved our time a day in advance. All dishes were unique in texture and taste-- my favorite had to be the dessert. When finally viewing the menu after returning to the lobby, we realized we correctly identified 4 of 7 courses (!!!). Very filling. TBH I think the food itself is ok (still tasty!), it's more so the gimmick that you're paying for. We loved Kristin, our server/guide :-) Her humor and enthusiasm made our whole experience so much more enjoyable. NOTE: Really disliked the outside setup. The location is already in a skeevy strip mall, and the signage font makes it look like some sort of arcade. The lobby is no help either-- instead of an upscale restaurant as advertised, it's quite sterile and cheap, more like the entrance to an office building or car rental. And there's cleaning fluid smell everywhere, likely wafting over from the bathrooms. Thankfully the bathrooms were clean, and there was no scent in the actual dining room, but the overwhelming scent while waiting was off-putting. My friends and I decided to come back almost a year later to celebrate my boyfriends birthday! We were excited to go since the menu had changed since the last time we visited. The first couple of minutes are the hardest to get through, as your eyes are adjusting to the darkest dark you've ever been in. So that was neat in itself. This is about the experience, you may not enjoy everything on your plate, but that creates the intimacy of talking with those that you came with and your thoughts on the food. It was definitely a unique experience! I first want to state this is an all VEGAN restaurant, I am not sure how I overlooked that. Nothing against Vegans , but I probably would have chosen a different restaurant had I paid more attention to that fact . Turned out that those beads were glow in the dark beads . So to not ruin the experience for others and or have myself removed from the establishment, my waiter suggested that I put something over my head and she then brought me a clean table cloth to place over my head. Lol Once sat at the table , we were given great direction and instructions to the things in front of us ; silverware to the right of us , and our glass of water being placed at the tip of our butter knives. It's a 7 course VEGAN meal , mostly finger foods that's served 1 item at a time, with the last item being a dessert. For me personally, i did not enjoy the food selection at all , maybe the dessert a little but for $100 a person, I really do wish there were more food options. My favorite part of my/our experience, is all 3 of my daughters saying that they were all freezing cold and our server bringing over 3 more table cloths for them to wrap themselves in . The sight that was seen of all of us wrapped in table cloths , oh how I wished there were a way to capture it or even have seen it . The Concept /experience including our server was a 10/10. Food for me 2/10.
