Normally we would drive to Lockhart to get Black's famous brisket but today we didn't want to drive an hour to get it. So we heard they opened in Austin and here we are. Parking here is trickier than in Lockhart. Once we found the free parking structure behind the Wild Wood Bake House we were in. We stopped in the bakery just to be sure parking there was free and available to all these local businesses and they confirmed it was. Awesome! This location is very nice, on the smaller side. Only complaint is the blaring TVs everywhere you look. I'm not a fan of having the TV on during a meal. I want to focus on my meal and the conversation. The food is great. Not as many side options as the original but just as tasty. We ordered 1/2 lb of both Turkey and Fatty Brisket. Both were incredibly juicy and flavorful. The sides we chose were green beans and potato salad. We loved both. They have a bar where you get your pickles, onions, & jalapeños. I picked up all three. The pickles were extra spicy to me. Now to be fair I added the habanero hot sauce to my BBQ sauce and I'm not sure if it was afterburn or the actual pickles. But I'm thinking their pickles are spicy. We really liked that we could bop over to Wild Wood Bake House for dessert after. Definitely a great place for BBQ. We will be back and you should try it too! read more

To be fair, we ordered this to go and ate it about an hour later, so the experience might have been my own dang fault. I wanted to try Black's because they have cheddar jalapeño sausage. Unfortunately, when we arrived to pick up our order, they gave us regular sausage because they were out of cheddar jalapeno. The sausage was really crumbly, which was interesting! It was also pretty fatty, but again - I might have just been pouty because the whole reason I wanted to try Black's was the cheddar jalapeno. I also tried a rib without sauce - the spice rub was really good! The rib was a little too fatty for my liking, but overall the dry ribs were pretty tasty. The Mac and Cheese was artificial orange and a little soupy, plus very peppery. It was not gooey and cheesy like I was hoping. The banana pudding tasted really heavy of artificial banana, which is honestly many people's preference! read more

Have seen this place advertised on the food channel and had to try it. We're pretty picky about barbecue, being from Chicago, originally, but this place knows what they're doing! Nice crisp edges on the giant beef ribs, but tender and juicy on the inside. And they're HUGE! Brisket is tender, as well. Sauce is eh..., a big tangy, but we never come to bbq joints for the sauce-it's all about the meat. Pretty good sides-the Mac 'n Cheese is creamy and cheesy, pretty good street corn and cole slaw; will have to try the green beans next time. Pretty pricey food, particularly the meat, at about $22/lb average, so sharing is good. My hubby and I should've ordered ONE GIANT BEEF RIB to share and 2 slices of brisket. I absolutely love this place and take all my visitors here for BBQ! My go to's are the giant beef ribs and fatty brisket. Talk about fall off the bone deliciousness! The flavors are always perfectly smoky and just so good. I've also had the jalapeño cheddar sausage, chopped beef, all the sides, and the peach cobbler. Everything has always been fantastic. OG Black's you're losing your edge or perhaps it was an off night for you. Let's hope the latter... I came in for dinner with a work colleague looking to get his Barbecue fix so naturally I figured we'd hit up Black's Barbecue. There wasn't a large line quite small but it was right after work so this played well for us. I order my usual: Brisket and a Sausage link (jalapeño this time) with some sides (Mac & Beans). The Brisket seemed off to me. I doused it in some sauce and it was ok. I started to realize my buddy was thinking that this is my idea of great Barbecue now. :( The Sausage link was a mess. It was tougher than a leather belt. I don't know why I didn't take it back up but I think I just wanted this to be over that this point. My colleague ate and really didn't have much to say so I laid it out there that "they are usually really good". Let's hope I redeem myself - I don't want to be known as a bad food guy. So why 3 stars for Blacks? Well I rounded out the many great times here and just chalked this up to a bad time however I can't let that slide either so a 3 is a balance for now. Good not great. The " fatty" brisket was moist and tender. It has a decent smoke ring and great taste BUT i would say it is lightly seasoned. So if your expecting to get that heavy seasoned Central Texas Style flavor you might be a little surprised when you eat the food here. We ordered a pound of brisket , one beef rib and a medium size of the street corn. The beef rib was monstrous in size and the first few bites were good but not great. I've definitely had better better beef ribs in Texas before. The rib meat was great tasting , moist and so tender you could cut it with a fork. I will say that as I got to taste different parts of the rib (closer to the bone) I did get a different but better taste. For what it's worth. I also found it interesting that they have salt and pepper shakers on the table. It's almost that they recognize some folks may want way more of that experience. For me personally, having it on the meat during the cooking process is best but maybe someone can prove me wrong. The medium size street corn was just not enough for two people because it was so darn delicious! Lol Just try it and you won't be disappointed. All in all we paid about $76 dollars after tax for all the food mentioned above with two soft drinks. We went on a Monday early afternoon and there was indoor seating available. Outdoor seating was an option but we didn't go that route. Service was good , layout of Resturant and condiments were good. No complaints there. They do have dedicated parking in the back but there's only a few spots that I saw. There is a security guard walking around making sure you are not taking other near by business spots. If you're looking for legit BBQ you have found your spot. The moment you walk in you can get a blast of the aroma of BBQ in your face. Most of the dishes are served and charged by the pound. The price was a little more on the expensive side but it was worth it Make sure to get a couple of sides to accompany your meal. The potato salad and the macaroni and cheese were good. Real cheese is used in the macaroni and not the fake cheese sauce. The beef rib and brisket are amazing! I would suggest the lean brisket and not the fatty. What I liked, the lean brisket and chicken. The beef rib looks amazing but the fat content is to high for me, and it's not like chunks of fat but delicious fat that is integrated into the beef. Many would like but just not for me. The lean brisket is moist and delicious. Price is about average at $12-25 per person. They have a few sides, the Mac and cheese seemed popular though I didn't try it. Overall, a decent spot. I would give it 3.5 stars if possible. read more

The Austin outpost of a Lockhart institution - the place doesn't disappoint. The brisket is stellar (the fatty stuff is brilliant, and the lean stuff is equally but differently good), the beef ribs are *outstanding*, and the sauce is addictive. The coleslaw and pickles are highly acidic, which - significantly - helps cut the fat. All in all, well worth the line you end up standing in. Note - the line is basically you waiting to get served - once you do, there is usually plenty of space to sit... There weren't many sides that looked appealing to this gf girl but I chose the pinto beans. They were delicious and just like granny used to make. Much better than Terry Blacks beans IMHO ( read my TB review for more) . I ordered pork ribs and thought they were up to par and flavorful. I gave 1 to the hubby and he said they were tender with a nice fatty flavor, cooked to perfection. Hubby got lean and fatty brisket. The brisket was about 3' think and cooked to perfection. Hubby says Blacks brisket beats the brisket at Terry Blacks, easy. That said, the jalapeño and cheese sausages were dry and all the cheese had been cooked away. He was disappointed. read more

Its quite a good bbq place. The parking is a small lot across from the restaurant and it can get busy during regular hours, but I've always been able to find a spot so far. My favorite thing on their menu is the fatty brisket. Juicy, tender, and ole lord that beautiful smoky crust sends me right to heaven! They really know how to smoke that brisket. Their other options are good, but you should really come here for the brisket. The cheddar mac is dope and has an awesome kick to it and the bbq sauce they have in house is decent. I would have to say, this is probably the best bbq place nearby campus. If you drive out more, you can probably find a better option but this does the job. They have shared seating inside and patio seating outside. Lots of tvs are located around so you don't have to miss your favorite college game. read more

Short version - disappointing because the meat was not all that good and the small restaurant was super smoky. Not sure how this is related to Black's on Barton Springs but the Barton Springs restaurant was much better. We went into Black's about 5pm on a Sunday for an early dinner before a show at Hogg Auditorium. We got there just in time to beat the rush (the line was out the door 10 minutes after we sat down). It's not a very big restaurant indoors and it's super smoky. I like the smoke on my BBQ but not so much soaked into my clothes. There is outdoor seating but it was a chilly day. We ordered cole slaw and beans for sides. My wife wanted chicken but they didn't have any. It was early in the day so not sure why but we didn't get any explanation. She ended up getting some turkey and a couple of pork ribs. I got a big slice of fatty brisket and a couple of pork ribs, too. I was pretty disappointed in the meat. The brisket was fairly moist but not very smoky and not much bark. The ribs were cut from the end so didn't have much meat and were pretty dry. The best meat was the turkey - very moist and fairly smoky. The sides were generic in a good way. The beans were heavy on the chili powder. The slaw had something on the spicy side, maybe horseradish, that was very good. I went back for some dessert because the peach cobbler was calling me. It was pretty disappointing. I got the tail end of the batch and got a lot of crust and not much peach. I should have just asked for a pull from a new batch but it had gotten really busy and had already taken me almost 15 minutes to get the cobbler. Our meal was pretty cheap, about $30 total because we didn't get much food and no alcohol. But even then, it was pretty disappointing. read more

We were near The University yesterday, our go-to place (Stiles Switch) was closed and we wanted some barbecue. The went back to the Austin location of the world renown Black's Barbecue in Lockhart. We have had trouble at this location mainly associated with the personnel. Today, the problem was with the lean brisket. It was overcook, dry and near flavorless. We assume the brisket gets impair during its transport from Lockhart. If you are having a problem with lean brisket as a Texas barbecue restaurant, you have problems. This was my mistake, and they were extremely friendly and helpful even though it was most likely an inconvenience for them.
