This restaurant is fantastic with a very hipster-ish vibe, crowd, and decor, with a slight Middle Eastern feel, and very cool ambiance. The cocktails are unique- I had their Ultimate Clean, Green, Dirty Blue Cheese Martini, which had Icelandic vodka distilled from glaciers, using green hydro-power only, which was delicious, and my mom had the Bee's Knees, which she also really enjoyed. My parents had the crab bisque and my husband and I shared the Drunken Crab Soup which had one of their famous crab cakes on top and was light, flavorful, and very tasty. The pork belly Bao buns with pickled onions was also very good. For entrees, my husband had the Red Thai Shrimp curry which had unique vegetables in it, such as celery, that he really liked; and I had the hand cut ribbon pasta in a cream sauce with lump crab, shrimp, and gremolata bread crumbs that was wonderful. Other entrees included the braised short ribs with shrimp and grits that my mom found succulent and delightful and the cod and shrimp special that my dad also very much enjoyed. Dessert was also delicious- I had the fried banana cheesecake which was reminiscent of bananas foster; my husband had the bread pudding with caramel sauce and butterscotch whipped cream which he loved; and my mom had the Belgian Chocolate Mousse- rich and creamy. Overall, the experience was amazing and the food and drinks, unique and high-quality. Highly recommend if you are looking for a nicer, more indulgent place to eat or bring a date to! read more

Waited over 40 minutes for just two sandwiches (veggie burger and cheesesteak) because our order was clearly forgotten. A table that sat down after us got their food and was halfway through eating before ours even came out. When it finally arrived, it was wrong--my wife asked for no mushrooms on the cheesesteak and it came with mushrooms. The waitress said "that's my bad" but didn't offer to fix it or make it right. Portions were disappointing too--maybe 10 fries on the plate--and the cheesesteak alone was $32, which is honestly ridiculous for what we got. We paid, told the manager about the experience, and left. Save your time and money and go somewhere else. I spent 15 years in restaurant business and never write reviews, this experience is worth letting people know. read more

We waited nearly 45 minutes for just a salad and an appetizer, despite being one of only four tables seated indoors. The food was extremely overpriced, the service slow, and the kitchen's sanitary practices appeared questionable at best. On the way to the restroom--which requires passing the open-style kitchen--I couldn't help but notice how disorganized and unclean the kitchen looked. One cook was plating food with bare hands, while another was aggressively tossing ingredients into a salad bowl. To make matters worse, I overheard a server returning a dish to the kitchen because a customer found a hair in their food. While I understand that gloves aren't always required if proper handwashing is practiced, the overall appearance of the kitchen, combined with what I witnessed and overheard, suggests that hygiene may not be a priority here. To be fair, this is speculation--but as the saying goes, where there's smoke, there's usually fire. I wouldn't recommend this place. Save your time, your money, and your appetite--dine elsewhere. read more

The hot honey had just the right amount of spicy where my mouth had a constant warm but not overpowering the rest of the flavors. Blacksmith bar and grill has excellent vegan options. Their best ever double veggie burger patty tastes great with corn and carrots, and it comes with pickle tomato greens and a delicious sauce. The Seitan Bao buns have a soy ginger sauce and the taste exceeds greatness. Arrived for lunch well before the peak crowds and wait outside. Downside is the hostess stand is outside, and we arrived when the temperature was already at 97o. It was sooooo nice, we went twice! We spent 4 days in the adorable little town of Berlin, MD. It has more than its fair share of little gems, but among them, its crown jewel is Blacksmith! The ambiance, inside and out on the patio, are both casual and cool and deliver their own unique experience. The staff is professional, knowledgeable and attentive. We landed at Blacksmith because they offer a vegan/veg menu in addition to their regular menu and our party was a mix of plant based and traditional diners. Smart business catering to a variety of diets in an area that sees its fair share of tourism during the warmer months. The vegetarians in the group choose where to eat 90 percent of the time in a mixed party. Service & Ambiance The restaurant as a whole was very accommodating. We were a party of 4 adults and 4 kids and we were sat near immediately, which is a feat in and of itself on a Friday night. The food came out quickly, the drinks came out quickly, and the staff was attentive. We never really waited for anything or found ourselves 'needing' something to be able to enjoy our meal. The server could have been a little more pleasant, but likely her first table on a Friday night had 4 kids under 6, so I get it. I didn't expect to be greeted like we were going to spend any money. We were sat on the patio, which looks like a newer addition to the restaurant and is pretty well decorated and has a cozy, inviting, casual gastropub thing going on. Food Let me preface this with the fact that our party is not the easiest to please on this front. We spent most of our adult lives dining in the restaurants of NYC and the surrounding area and part of the family still lives overseas, so eating all over the EU is a yearly occurrence. That said, half of our party got their start in the restaurant industry, so we get it, and we get that Blacksmith wasn't going to be the French Laundry, but you do set a certain standard for yourself when a risotto dish without a protein is $30. The kids crushed their food. The amount of places that throw slop at a 5 year old because they are 5 is astounding, and here, the kid's dishes were actually very well done for what they were. The fries were very good as well. Hand cut, seasoned nicely, fried properly. The wine and beer lists were nothing to write home about, bigger brands, standard mark-ups, nothing special and exactly what I would expect from a spot that has a diverse demographic. The cocktails were fantastic though. My wife had the maple whiskey sour, and it was incredibly well balanced. One of the better cocktails I've had in the last 5-10 years. The carnivorous side of the family seemed to enjoy their crab cake and BLT Caesar. Crab cake was all meat, no filling, and the salad looked fresh and well made and warranted its compliments. The vegan/veg food was the big miss here. My wife and I have been eating this way for over 20 years, and although the flavor was there, the excessive amount of fats used in the cooking (cream, butter, oil) was completely unnecessary and truly saturated and masked what could have been explosive flavors. The grits and the risotto both had a ring of fats enclosing them when they were plated. I know it is a hard one to master, especially using vegan ingredients, but the risotto was not cooked through and for $30 a plate I expect it to be pretty spot on. The BBQ seitan was delicious however, and was enjoyed by the veg and non veg diets alike. This was our second time trying Blacksmith, as every place deserves another try, but I think this will be our last time indulging in the veg menu. We had a handful of the other items last year and they were equally as disappointing. Overall, our experience really wasn't terrible, and the beauty of the palate is its subjectivity, so please don't steer clear of Blacksmith because of this review. The veg/vegan food just didn't warrant the price point, despite the rising cost of ingredients. read more

The Blacksmith Bar & Restaurant is not to be missed if you are visiting Berlin, Delaware. A historical building, it is now a very nice restaurant serving a great menu of seafood and other savories. Our party started with the Crispy Lump Crab Deviled Eggs, which are a combination of deviled eggs and Scotch eggs with crab (think battered and deep-fried deviled eggs). While there were only four (two whole eggs), they are very tasty and very filling as an appetizer. I and two of my dining partners then moved onto the crab bisque which was absolutely delicious. The flavor profile needed nothing. It was the perfect combination of umami, savory and rich I chose the curried chicken salad as my main: very juicy spiced chicken with plenty of sultanas and craisins for a hint of sweetness, served on a bed of mixed greens, including peppery arugula. Absolutely delicious. Service was, to say the least, extremely attentive. Our server checked on us frequently to make sure beverages were re-filled and plates moved. Let me make my case by saying that I love to cook, have worked in a lot of smaller cafés as well as the banquet kitchen at the Ritz Carlton Washington DC. I am not salt adverse or sensitive. But I met someone that I barely know there and we both agreed that the salt was overwhelming. We had different soups and both had the Caesar salad. The soup and the dressing was very over salted. For old Rehoboth folks, this is the home of the beloved Planet X folks. Truly the best veggie burger around. Pretty side patio and funky decor keeps this place busy. The outside porch was home to a four top with a magnificent Great Pyrenees at their feet- a sign of the accommodative nature of the owner/chef. Equally accommodative was a separate menu, highlighting all the vegan vegetarian elements called out specifically, but hiding within a broader well constructed main offerings . Our visit included specials of seafood, fritters, meatballs, and other worldly porcini mushroom soup. The theory goes like this, if they can knock it out of the park on soups, imagine what they can do on entrees. The hostess was on her game as she managed the walk-ins, as reservations are not accepted. After a short wait and some well executed cocktails, we were seated, taking in the view of a busy dining room in mid service. Flank steak with some well controlled heat from hot honey and chill crisp was a recipe worth stealing. Another diner enjoyed a rockfish topped with enough crab meat for two entrées. My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a windy Friday afternoon. We sat outside and it was perfect . No problem with the service- waitress was very attentive . I got a Fried fish sandwich- coated in panko - it was crispy and large - really quite good. Husband got a shrimp Poboy that was equally large and delicious. I found this place on YELP!! I was on my way to Virginia Beach for the weekend to attend a relatives birthday party and after researching my drive from Brooklyn NY and Berlin, Maryland seemed to be a good sort of half way point. It's only about 8 miles from Ocean City Maryland. The town of Berlin is very quaint and I was pleasantly surprised how nice it was. Everyone in the restaurant was super nice. Our waitress Jeanette was AWESOME! Great recommendations, extremely attentive, couldn't ask for a nicer person who felt like a friend. Food was great, the salads are extremely large and priced well. We started with the shrimps tacos which were great, we had the shrimp Po Boy sandwich with hand cut fries, and the curried chicken salad. This was large enough for 2 people to share and was super fresh. The restaurant is farm to table, has a nice menu selection and a full bar. They have really nice outside seating, parking and is within a block of the main streets in Berlin. The restaurant is very clean, spacious seating, a parking lot and a very nice staff . I would highly recommend them and may stop by for lunch on my drive beck to Nee York City. read more

Absolutely terrible experience at this restaurant tonight. It was very disappointing. We came in with high expectations since we enjoy farm to table restaurants along the Delmarva coast, and we left with a sour taste in our mouth. It's sad because it was definitely on our list of places to try and now we won't be going back. A few things to note: 1. When we came to the hostess booth to be seated, the hostess seemed very frantic and mistakenly thought my husband was "the kid who lives next door to her" which was odd, since my husband isn't a kid and clearly doesn't live near the coast, but she said it would be a 15 minute wait. It was a 25 minute wait and then we were finally seated at a small table near the door that slams shut and allowed flies to waft in every time the door was opened. 2. The air conditioning was absolutely not on. 3. Our waitress was extremely disorganized. She was a Latina girl with a ponytail and glasses and press on nails. Not sure of her name but her comments and lack of service are one of the main reasons we won't be back. She took way too long to come to the table, got frustrated when I asked her questions about the specialty cocktails as if she was a cashier at a 7-11 waiting for a customer fumbling for change in their purse, rather than a customer at a fine dining establishment that has a supposedly great reputation in Berlin. 4. During our first few minutes we noticed the table was extremely sticky and gross. Not sure if it was wiped prior to us sitting down. 5. The hostess (blonde, bun with some fly away layers in the back and glasses) kept coming in and complaining to the waitstaff about how she's "so done here tonight"... that was a little unsettling. It made me feel like the owner and management have a toxic reputation. 6. A couple was sat at a larger table next to us, immediately tended to because they were regulars, and the same waitress we had offered them salt and pepper with their appetizer and did not even offer us salt and pepper until the main courses came out. 7. When we were finished with our lentil salad (terribly disappointing since it was a garden salad with a few lentils thrown on top) I gave the waitress my utensils and requested new ones for my dinner entree. She rolled her eyes, went in the back and started complaining to the kitchen staff. My husband saw this happen when he went to use the bathroom. The kitchen staff and this waitress were going back and forth really loudly saying "I can't understand why someone wants a second set of utensils, her entree is a burger! I've never heard of someone wanting utensils with a burger"... well I guess this isn't a 5 star establishment but when a customer asks for a second set of utensils, even if my entree was a burger, I expect a clean set of utensils. What I don't expect is for the kitchen staff and waitress to discuss this in front of my husband as he's waiting to use the restroom, right in front of us. The same waitress with the ponytail and glasses and press on nails came back with the second set of utensils and slammed it at my table. It was unsettling again. My burger was also raw in the middle and the cheese and bun were burnt on the inside, and the fries were flavorless and brown and soggy. Lost my appetite throughout dinner. The only thing I liked was my strawberry sangria. Another thing this same Latina waitress did that was disgusting was when I saw her pick her nose with her press on nails and then proceed to yell "omg where are the limes I need a lime!!" And grab a lime slice with the same finger that was just up her nose, and shoved it on my husband's drink. He didn't touch his drink because we witnessed this. Mind you, we did not act funny at all toward anyone at the restaurant. We were friendly the entire time but the vibe was off due to the disgusting and disgruntled employees. Another thing that was really ghetto was when these three gentlemen that work there walked in and took over the bar and the waitstaff including our waitress were just entertaining them at the bar rather than serving customers who were dining. I really wanted to like this place but our ghetto waitress with lack of hygiene, manners, and common sense, and the disgruntled anxiety-driven hostess were a trip and the ambiance was definitely left to be desired. When we paid the check I even said to our waitress "thank you for the extra set of utensils". Beautiful decor that is super boho/Buddhist/hippie and cute, and a fun cocktail menu, but that's about all there is. To add insult to injury, they charge for bread for the table ($3 for a tiny hoagie roll you could get at Wawa, with some parsley and butter slapped on it) and the entire meal was $100 which included 1 appetizer shared, bread, 2 drinks total, 2 entrees total, we did not get dessert. Overpriced for the service we received and it sounds like it's a toxic work environment. read more

We had a bit of a small wait and there's some benches out front to wait but not too much shade. Unfortunately, there's no way to go explore or sit in your car since they don't text you to notify you. They only come out the waiting area to call your name. Small draft list but they do have cocktails which it seemed like most people ordered. We had the Crispy Lump Crab Deviled Eggs which were very good but they do only come with 3 so quite pricey for the quantity. For our entrees, we ordered the Famous Plany X Crab Cake Sandwich and the Eastern Shore Bahn Mi. Both were very good and great flavors.
