I don't even know where to begin. There are so many problems with restaurant. I have tried it a few times, trying to like it, because the menu is promising and the ambiance is upscale and lovely. However, tonight alone, I will never go back. To start, my mom arrived before us and got the wrong kind of table. When we asked to be moved outside, the host was visibly annoyed. There was every outdoor table available, but somehow we had to be sat at the only sunny table with glaring sun in our faces. It was annoying to say the least. Once at our table, our server was not very friendly. He eventually warmed up when he made mistakes, but to start he asked for drink orders and when we tried to place appetizers too he told us no, not yet. Then when he came back, he didn't even want our appetizer order. He was very confused about if our orders were entrees or appetizers. When our food came out, 3 out of 5 of the orders were wrong. The guys that brought out the food, didn't speak about English to understand who the food went to (which was fine), but we could communicate that the orders were wrong. When the server came over he was very nice about fixing things, adjusting the bill, and making the orders right, but we were just kind of over it by then. Overall, the food actually was good. The only thing that wasn't great was the flaming crab dip didn't flame. But it was still tasty. The mocktails were excellent. If I drank, I might consider going back just to sit at the bar. The service I got this night is not inconsistent with the other times I have been there. I feel like the staff treats you as a second class citizen. I'm unsure if it's because I have kids, I don't order drinks, or what their problem is, but I don't think I'll be returning. read more

Okay so July 3rd marks the day I went to this amazing establishment.. it was a Friday, live music, great staff, smiles laughs.. okay yeah you get the point. BUT!! The food was mouthwatering and tastefully amazing. I want to say a lot more but I'll tell you this i spent my birthday with these amazing folk at this restaurant and simply loved the start of my new year.. thank you for such a pleasant time.. pasta was top notch and of course a nice whiskey neat to compete.. 7/26/2025 This was a in a wim find for my sister and I so we did not have a reservation but it is recommended (try open table). This place was packed and popular with people filling the outside spaces and inside dining. We grabbed seats at the bar and were greeted by Zachery who gave us an excellent run down of the menu since it was our first time. Everything looked really good so we started with a peach and strawberry lemonade very flavorful( we're coming back for the mocktails they caught our eyes after we put these drinks in). The wait to put our order in was quite a while Zachery seemed to be spread quite thin running back and forth grabbing orders, finally a man in a suite was able to place an order for us. The duck fat fries weren't having that signature flavor or super crisp but we're still good. The short rib platter was absolutely out of this world and the spicy Italian pizza was loaded. Trying to get our check and head out was probably the hardest part of the evening everyone was super busy they were moving around like the flash! The place was big with private dining rooms and bathrooms at the end of a long hallway, think hunter meets private school. I recommend bring a jacket because they definitely pay for that ac. Blackwall barn and lodge in Columbia was an unexpected treat. We were attending a concert at Merriweather. Post and the restaurant is adjacent to the concert venue although only a brief walk. The menu offerings were varied and incredibly delicious. Those at our table ordered fried green tomatoes to start and then followed that with short rib sandwich, the snake bite pasta, which included a very nicely spiced sausage, the fried chicken sandwich, as well as the sushi grade tuna salad. Service was unintrusive yet attentive. Even though the space is large, it was warm and inviting. our party of four did not feel overwhelmed by some of the larger parties, and we felt as if we could carry on intimate conversation because of the noise levels, which were very tolerable. We are looking forward to our next visit to Blackwall barn and lodge. read more

I consider Blackwall Barn a hidden gem in Columbia town center because it's at such a great location with so many other options plus a kid friendly play area right next to it, and although we made a brunch reservation on Saturday the foot traffic seemed minimal. The interior looks so cozy but modern and there is ample seating options. I saw individuals of all ages so believe it caters to a wide range of people and interests. And there is a nice fire place area for picture moments. The food was really good. We had a selection of dishes ranging from shrimp and grits, branzino, and Chesapeake pasta all of which were very tasty. We also started with a nice white wine that hit the spot and our amazing waitress went above and beyond to provide us with the name and similar options to try on our own. There was also house made bread before the dishes which was tasty. Overall I had a great dining experience and would recommend for a date night, girls hangout, family lunch or dinner, or even a solo date. read more

Came for dinner Thursday night with a party of 11--got seated in a private room which was a pleasant surprise since we didn't request it. Our server Farah was great, friendly and attentive! Overall, food was okay. Started off with a bunch of appetizers: Barn Brussel Sprouts, Fried Green Tomatoes, Crispy Calamari, Duck Fat Fries and later got the Crispy Fried Lobster Tails. Entrees were mixed feelings. Scallop & Shrimp Risotto came with 3 med-size shrimps and 2 med-size scallops, not really worth the price. Also, the type of risotto available changes daily, was corn risotto that day--interesting taste but overall lacked flavor/was bland. Crab Cakes came in two, but the crabcake texture was very mushy, not too enjoyable. Their special, Ribeye, was flavorful and tender, but the New York Strip lacked flavor, all its flavor was only in the red wine jus sauce, not the steak itself. Branzino and Shrimp Scampi were good. For dessert, we wanted to try the Smith Island Cake in the traditional yellow cake/buttery frosting flavor but they only had a red velvet option. So we got the Berry Cobbler & Decadent Chocolate Cake instead, both pretty good. Cocktails were okay--they messed up my first drink and had to remake it but it was fine after. read more

A great experience all around. We were there for a celebratory dinner and the waitress made us feel extremely special. She was able to recommend certain dishes for us that were all hits. Restaurant was busy but not too loud and didnt feel strained trying to have a conversation. Food was absolutely amazing with very large portions. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants to have wedding reception there. The lack of communication and on-site coordination was a major drawback. Maybe more on site staffing would have prevented the issues we faced. I didn't see or noticed a venue coordinator present on the day of the reception which probably caused delays in set up and coordination. However, the ambiance was very beautiful and lovely. Love this restaurant! The decor and the food are equally matched in awesomeness!!! I love the barn chique it has going. Like a Colorado hunting lodge meets modern design. The food was very flavorful, get the flaming carb dip for a table side show! Plus it's the best crab dip in town. The ambiance of the atmosphere is outmatched by the foods taste and that's saying something because I love the way the place is designed. We all share food so I tried the steak, a crab pasta dish, the pot pie and the duck fries rocked! But the pièce de résistance was the Risotto! Wow that's yummy. I visited for lunch today and unfortunately left disappointed. The service was attentive in the sense that our server checked on us frequently and was pleasant throughout the meal. However, there seemed to be a disconnect between checking in and following through. We had to remind our server about items we requested, including dressing and a Diet Coke, despite multiple visits to the table. The bigger issue was the food. I ordered the Caesar salad with salmon and the Chesapeake pasta. Neither dish had much flavor, and I found myself adding a significant amount of salt and pepper just to make them enjoyable. In fact, I overheard another guest expressing concerns about the lack of flavor in their sandwich, which made me intentionally avoid ordering it. When asked how everything was, I decided to provide honest feedback at the end of the meal. The server then asked that I tell the manager, Instead of approaching the conversation as feedback, the interaction felt awkward and somewhat dismissive. The manager's opening question was, "How can I help you?" when I wasn't seeking help or compensation--I was simply sharing my experience because I had been asked. When I mention the lack of flavor of the Caesar salad , Inwas question "even with the dressing it wasn't good?" To their credit, the pasta was removed from the bill. My dining companion enjoyed their meal, so others may have a different experience. For me, though, the combination of bland food and the uncomfortable management interaction means this isn't a place I'll be returning to. read more

I went here last night to celebrate my wedding anniversary. I've been here a few times before with girlfriends and for brunch. But it's losing something now. First of all this restaurant is gorgeous inside. The set up is absolutely lovely! Our server, Kayla, was wonderful! She was friendly and intuitive. She checked in us often. The food was good but it could have been better. I had the Chesapeake pasta while my husband had a dinner salad (I can't recall the name). The pasta was delicious but it needed salt. I had a lemonade and ice tea with a $6 shot of vodka but I couldn't taste any liquor. I also ordered the Smith Island cake for dessert. It tasted dry. I could tell it had come from a refrigerator. That was disappointing. But overall I like this restaurant. I recommend you go and enjoy yourself. Skip dessert and the cocktail. read more

Had always been curious about this place and really wanted to love it because it's so pretty from the outside. Loved the artwork and decor of the inside of the restaurant. Overall, the food was fine but very salty and heavy. The portions are large. Peach lemonade is sweet. Though the cheese used on the French onion soup was melty and hot, it tasted off - similar to a mozzarella cheese rather than a Gruyère. Meal was too expensive for what you get. Service is friendly but not the above and beyond for what you'd expect at the price range (e.g. brushing crumbs mid meal). We ordered appetizers and entrees, but they delivered everything at once. Would have appreciated more staggered delivery (appetizers first, and then entrees after we finish). We were celebrating a wedding anniversary and there was verbal acknowledgment of "congratulations" whereas other restaurants may have comped a dessert. read more

Came here for a birthday dinner with a friend and when I say I've had this restaurant on my list for yearsss! So glad I was able to finally make it here. I only knew of the location in Gambrills so I didn't know they had one in Columbia. We had a delightful time and the food was fantastic. Totally worth the hype! We got an appetizer, entree and dessert. The decor is very chic and our waitress was very attentive. We got the duck fat fries (still thinking about them, absolutely delicious!!), I got the Chesapeake pasta and my friend got the Caprese Canoe with Salmon. We both got the apple bread pudding which leaves my mouth watering to this day with the memory of eating it lol. All the food was absolutely delicious. Bathrooms were clean, and for a weekday it wasn't too crowded with the option to sit outside. I would recommend reservations and parking was super easy with plenty of open spots. I took off one star because our waitress asked if we had any dietary restrictions and we both mentioned dairy, but then my friend's apple bread pudding had whipped cream on it. Went here last year and had a very positive experience. My parents were meeting my boyfriend for the first time formally and this restaurant did a wonderful job having the whole experience come together. Food was exceptional and they offered good portion sizes. Service was also outstanding as they checked on my family and I regularly. It's a semi-casual vibe but there's definitely a possibility to make it more formal. I would happily return back here just to have a casual night out with friends or family. Everything was delish! We came to celebrate our anniversary and had a table reservation, but ended up just staying at the bar (World Cup game was too good to leave). The bartenders were very attentive and gave us great suggestions when we couldn't decide on which pizza to get (which are half off during happy hour!). The happy hour specials are pretty decent- can't beat $5 glasses of wine these days. There is also plenty of seating at the bar and high tops to enjoy these specials. We came on a Wednesday which also happened to be pasta night (half off). The snake bite was delish- uniquely formed pasta with rich sauce and plenty of toppings (5 shrimp, chicken, sausage). We also opted for some brussel sprouts to add some veggies to our carbs- the white sauce drizzled over it was perfection! Came here with my family on a weekday afternoon. We wanted to take advantage of Blackwall's happy hour deals with half price pizza, so we got a caprese, shrimp scampi (odd to have shrimp on pizza, prob never again), and short rib (like French onion soup w/a ton of meat) pizzas. The caprese and shrimp pizzas had globs of cheese... so heavy. The short rib was not bad, but all of them were oily. The pizza was better after taking it home and air frying it, and removing some of the cheese. But I wouldn't get any of them for takeout. I also got a strawberry hibiscus mocktail - a little on the sweet side, was $8, ok but not mind blowing to be paying $8 for a drink like this. The decor was quite nice and I could see it as a good space for gatherings, but the floor was super slippery - very odd. Was a scary walk to the bathroom because of the slipperiness. Overall, like 3/5 stars. Servers and ambiance weren't bad. Just was not great food or drink. Or walking around. Didn't make me want to come back. read more

This was our first visit to celebrate an anniversary on a Sunday evening, which was not crowded. The restaurant is large and decorated like a lodge, which is similar to Clyde's Tower Oaks Lodge in Rockville. It is a farm direct restaurant so food served is fresh. Our server was Kayla who was very helpful. She told us the best dishes to try on the menu. Due to food allergies, she checked with the kitchen staff on substitutions and if additional fees would be charged. We ordered the braised beef short ribs and Chesapeake pasta. The entrees were large. I enjoyed the beef short ribs which was flavorful and came with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes. However, my spouse had the Chesapeake house made pasta that came with 4 shrimps and crabmeat. There was very little crabmeat on it for $36 so not worth getting. We were seated in a small dining room away from the main dining room. It was difficult to get WiFi service on our phones. Country vocal music played throughout the meal. But it would have been better if contemporary music was played as well. Overall, a nice dining experience for special occasions. read more

We came here for date night. This was our first visit to this location. We have dined at the Gambrills location years ago and thought this spot would be just as nice as the other location. I tried to book a reservation, which is probably suggested and could not and took a chance that we will be seated. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted and asked if we had a reservation, but we advised them we did not have a reservation but would like a table for two. We were advised to wait for the hostess and as soon as she returned, we were able to be seated. This location is not as big as the Gambrills location, but plenty of space to host a big party, which we noticed that was being set up for a 25th birthday party. We were advised that our server would be with us shortly and given menus. When our server arrived, she immediately walked us through the menu and specials. She gave us a moment to look over the menu while she got us water. Upon her return, we placed our order. Hubby had the Chesapeake pasta, and I had the Lemon Chicken Linguine. After a few minutes, our food was served. We got to taste each other's food. I really liked hubby choice. However, I was not that thrilled with mine, but I did eat it- it was kind of watery, I thought the sauce would be creamy like hubby's dish. After dinner,we ordered dessert, hubby had the cinnamon bread pudding, where I had the berry cobbler. Both were good in my eyes. Now, this is where I was a little taken aback once the check came. There is a extra charge of you pay using your card vs paying with cash. The unchanged left a sour taste in my mouth. But what can you do ‍. Overall, the dining experience was fair. read more

After reading some reviews of Blackwall, I was concerned about parking and the service. But our granddaughter wanted to celebrate her birthday there so Blackwall it was. It turned out there is a large, free, public parking lot less than half a block from the restaurant. Our reservations were for 3:00 which worked out perfectly. We missed the buffet crowd before us and the dinner crowd after. We checked in at the front desk and were lead to our booth, which was tucked away in a corner and so cozy and comfortable. Our waitress, Lori, came by to check on us and to see if we needed anything. She was wonderful our whole dining experience. The rest of our party soon arrived and we ordered drinks and some appetizers. When our granddaughter, Ashley, ordered an alcoholic drink our waitress carded her. While checking the ID the waitress' face lit up and she smiled as she realized it was a few days past Ashley's 21st birthday. For appetizers we ordered fried green tomatoes, fried lobster bites, and duck oil fries. It wasn't long before every bit of the appetizers were eaten. For our meals I ordered crab soup and an entree salad, Our daughter ordered onion soup and a hamburger. For the rest of our party there was another hamburgers ordered, a crab cake, a seafood dish, and a fried chicken sandwich. One down side to the meal was my crab soup was awful. It tasted like tomato juice with frozen vegetables and some crabmeat. (Awful crab soup? This is Maryland, it should be better than that.) I passed it down to Richard. My salad was very good, nothing outstanding, but fresh enough and quite generous. Everyone else was totally enjoying their food. Ashley only ate about half of her seafood stew, but since she had eaten over half of the lobster bites, that was not surprising. For dessert daughter ordered cheese cake to carryout. Ashley ordered some fancy piece of cake. Of course it came with Happy Birthday written in frosting across the bottom of dish. We had had requested not a big birthday fuss so that was perfect. All in all it was a nice birthday lunch. I think arriving mid day, having Lori for our waitress, and everyone if good spirits made it perfect. Located right on the plaza, we stepped into the Blackwall barn & lodge on a Sunday evening. The interior is relaxed with lodge-like vibes. They have ample amount of bar seats as well as interior dining tables and seating out on their patio. The plating and prices are on the fancy side, but I liked the laid back feel of the restaurant. I've tried many of their cocktails and you can't go wrong with any of them! They are also presented beautifully. The bartenders are always super attentive and our food was brought out quick. We were given cheese biscuits at the beginning of the meal and they were so delicious I'm still thinking about them to this day! Their menu is filled with rustic eats, I found the red brick chicken to be absolutely delicious. It was a very generous serving of chicken on top of creamy mashed potatoes and squash. The whole meal was seasoned quite well (I'm someone who douses everything in salt). My partners crab cake sandwich was standard, he likes it with lots of plain old lump crab, and this one had a bit too much filler for his liking. The fries however got demolished. This was my third visit here, and I have never although given less than four stars, today I have to go with three, mainly because of the food service. My daughter and I came for dinner (our second visit together). I ordered the Original Greek Salad and added salmon for an additional $14 (I'll get to that in a moment). My daughter ordered the French onion soup and the Chesapeake. Unfortunately, by 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday, they were out of all appetizers except the wings ‍. We sat at the bar at 7:27 p.m. and placed our full order with Zack, who was great. However, we didn't receive our meals until 8:40 p.m., and that was only after I asked about it. I was starving and honestly confused about how a salad with salmon and a seafood pasta dish could take that long. There were no apologies offered, which was disappointing. As for the food itself, my daughter enjoyed her meal, and I did enjoy mine as well. The salmon was seasoned nicely and cooked to my requested medium temperature. However, the portion size for a $14 add on was, quite frankly, insulting. It was extremely small and not proportionate to the cost. Overall, this visit felt subpar and not up to the standard I've come to expect from Blackwall Barn & Lodge Columbia. The restaurant also didn't appear as clean as I've seen it in the past. I came here for a belated bday lunch with a gf. This was my first visit and a pleasant experience. Our server, Crystal (fire red hair) gave us excellent service. This is a relaxed, yet refined environment - pretty quiet. We had espresso martinis and sparkling lemon water to start. My gf's Caesar salad was a great size and we both enjoyed the Brussels (hers had bacon, mine did not). I recommend you try the Grilled branzino, Braised Short Ribs and the French onion soup. Make sure to pay attention to their brunch availability! Brunch was the initial reason we were coming here, but it was a Saturday. I'm glad we stayed. How cute is my birthday dessert? Things started off SO strong. We got the Brussels sprouts as a starter (which were fantastic) along with the lychee margarita and an espresso martini which were also both pretty good. Service started out great too, our server gave us plenty of recommendations and went over specials for us. For mains, we got shrimp and grits and the short rib pizza. Those were both great too, however after our food was delivered our waiter didn't show up again for a while to check on us while we sat there with empty drinks and when he finally did, we ordered another round of drinks and had to ask for more water. Took 20 minutes for the drinks to get back to us despite an almost empty bar and three bartenders (one of which was working her a** off, another who was rearranging salt shakers and doing his end of shift work, and the third who was just talking to her friends the whole time) and once we got the drinks, they were nothing like the first round and not good at all. Like I said, this started out SO strong and the food was actually really good, but the experience really fell flat service wise during the second half of our time there. read more

Blackwall Barn and Lodge was such a treat! Came here with one of my friends for her birthday and she loved it. I love the look of this restaurant. It has an elevated rustic look to it and ample seating. I saved up an appetite for this place because I had it in my bookmarks for a while. So we were bought some table biscuits, which were served with chive butter. The biscuits were soft and were served warm. I couldn't tell if it was jalapeño pieces baked into them but they were delicious with the chive butter. I ordered the Chesapeake pasta and my friend ordered the snake bite pasta. The Chesapeake pasta was a nice serving of lump crab, shrimp, asparagus, heirloom, tomatoes, and a lobster cream sauce. It was so flavorful and had a slight smoky flavor to it that made me enjoy the dish even more. Because it was a large serving I was able to take half of it home. I ordered the berry cobbler for dessert. Just seemed like more of a cake that wasn't cooked enough topped off with warm fruits and whipped cream. I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have wanted to, but the ambience, the service, and the main dish made up for that. My friend enjoyed her food and her chocolate cake. It was a very rich.
