After reading some reviews of Blackwall, I was concerned about parking and the service. But our granddaughter wanted to celebrate her birthday there so Blackwall it was. It turned out there is a large, free, public parking lot less than half a block from the restaurant. Our reservations were for 3:00 which worked out perfectly. We missed the buffet crowd before us and the dinner crowd after. We checked in at the front desk and were lead to our booth, which was tucked away in a corner and so cozy and comfortable. Our waitress, Lori, came by to check on us and to see if we needed anything. She was wonderful our whole dining experience. The rest of our party soon arrived and we ordered drinks and some appetizers. When our granddaughter, Ashley, ordered an alcoholic drink our waitress carded her. While checking the ID the waitress' face lit up and she smiled as she realized it was a few days past Ashley's 21st birthday. For appetizers we ordered fried green tomatoes, fried lobster bites, and duck oil fries. It wasn't long before every bit of the appetizers were eaten. For our meals I ordered crab soup and an entree salad, Our daughter ordered onion soup and a hamburger. For the rest of our party there was another hamburgers ordered, a crab cake, a seafood dish, and a fried chicken sandwich. One down side to the meal was my crab soup was awful. It tasted like tomato juice with frozen vegetables and some crabmeat. (Awful crab soup? This is Maryland, it should be better than that.) I passed it down to Richard. My salad was very good, nothing outstanding, but fresh enough and quite generous. Everyone else was totally enjoying their food. Ashley only ate about half of her seafood stew, but since she had eaten over half of the lobster bites, that was not surprising. For dessert daughter ordered cheese cake to carryout. Ashley ordered some fancy piece of cake. Of course it came with Happy Birthday written in frosting across the bottom of dish. We had had requested not a big birthday fuss so that was perfect. All in all it was a nice birthday lunch. I think arriving mid day, having Lori for our waitress, and everyone if good spirits made it perfect. I visited for lunch today and unfortunately left disappointed. The service was attentive in the sense that our server checked on us frequently and was pleasant throughout the meal. However, there seemed to be a disconnect between checking in and following through. We had to remind our server about items we requested, including dressing and a Diet Coke, despite multiple visits to the table. The bigger issue was the food. I ordered the Caesar salad with salmon and the Chesapeake pasta. Neither dish had much flavor, and I found myself adding a significant amount of salt and pepper just to make them enjoyable. In fact, I overheard another guest expressing concerns about the lack of flavor in their sandwich, which made me intentionally avoid ordering it. When asked how everything was, I decided to provide honest feedback at the end of the meal. The server then asked that I tell the manager, Instead of approaching the conversation as feedback, the interaction felt awkward and somewhat dismissive. The manager's opening question was, "How can I help you?" when I wasn't seeking help or compensation--I was simply sharing my experience because I had been asked. When I mention the lack of flavor of the Caesar salad , Inwas question "even with the dressing it wasn't good?" To their credit, the pasta was removed from the bill. My dining companion enjoyed their meal, so others may have a different experience. For me, though, the combination of bland food and the uncomfortable management interaction means this isn't a place I'll be returning to. read more

Came for dinner Thursday night with a party of 11--got seated in a private room which was a pleasant surprise since we didn't request it. Our server Farah was great, friendly and attentive! Overall, food was okay. Started off with a bunch of appetizers: Barn Brussel Sprouts, Fried Green Tomatoes, Crispy Calamari, Duck Fat Fries and later got the Crispy Fried Lobster Tails. Entrees were mixed feelings. Scallop & Shrimp Risotto came with 3 med-size shrimps and 2 med-size scallops, not really worth the price. Also, the type of risotto available changes daily, was corn risotto that day--interesting taste but overall lacked flavor/was bland. Crab Cakes came in two, but the crabcake texture was very mushy, not too enjoyable. Their special, Ribeye, was flavorful and tender, but the New York Strip lacked flavor, all its flavor was only in the red wine jus sauce, not the steak itself. Branzino and Shrimp Scampi were good. For dessert, we wanted to try the Smith Island Cake in the traditional yellow cake/buttery frosting flavor but they only had a red velvet option. I went here last night to celebrate my wedding anniversary. I've been here a few times before with girlfriends and for brunch. But it's losing something now. First of all this restaurant is gorgeous inside. The set up is absolutely lovely! Our server, Kayla, was wonderful! She was friendly and intuitive. She checked in us often. The food was good but it could have been better. I had the Chesapeake pasta while my husband had a dinner salad (I can't recall the name). The pasta was delicious but it needed salt. I had a lemonade and ice tea with a $6 shot of vodka but I couldn't taste any liquor. I also ordered the Smith Island cake for dessert. It tasted dry. I could tell it had come from a refrigerator. That was disappointing. But overall I like this restaurant. I recommend you go and enjoy yourself. Skip dessert and the cocktail. read more

Went here last year and had a very positive experience. My parents were meeting my boyfriend for the first time formally and this restaurant did a wonderful job having the whole experience come together. Food was exceptional and they offered good portion sizes. Service was also outstanding as they checked on my family and I regularly. It's a semi-casual vibe but there's definitely a possibility to make it more formal. I would happily return back here just to have a casual night out with friends or family. Had always been curious about this place and really wanted to love it because it's so pretty from the outside. Loved the artwork and decor of the inside of the restaurant. Overall, the food was fine but very salty and heavy. The portions are large. Peach lemonade is sweet. Though the cheese used on the French onion soup was melty and hot, it tasted off - similar to a mozzarella cheese rather than a Gruyère. Meal was too expensive for what you get. Service is friendly but not the above and beyond for what you'd expect at the price range (e.g. brushing crumbs mid meal). We ordered appetizers and entrees, but they delivered everything at once. Would have appreciated more staggered delivery (appetizers first, and then entrees after we finish). We were celebrating a wedding anniversary and there was verbal acknowledgment of "congratulations" whereas other restaurants may have comped a dessert. read more

This was my first time at Blackwall Barn & Lodge and I was a bit disappointed. We were a larger group of 12 and we waited for about an hour for our order to be taken. I never got a refill nor did anybody come by to get anybody more water. I ordered the french onion soup and the vegan pasta. The soup had almost no liquid in it but tasted good and the pasta was doused in pepper. I liked it but if you are sensitive to spices, that could be an issue. We came here for date night. This was our first visit to this location. We have dined at the Gambrills location years ago and thought this spot would be just as nice as the other location. I tried to book a reservation, which is probably suggested and could not and took a chance that we will be seated. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted and asked if we had a reservation, but we advised them we did not have a reservation but would like a table for two. We were advised to wait for the hostess and as soon as she returned, we were able to be seated. This location is not as big as the Gambrills location, but plenty of space to host a big party, which we noticed that was being set up for a 25th birthday party. We were advised that our server would be with us shortly and given menus. When our server arrived, she immediately walked us through the menu and specials. She gave us a moment to look over the menu while she got us water. Upon her return, we placed our order. Hubby had the Chesapeake pasta, and I had the Lemon Chicken Linguine. After a few minutes, our food was served. We got to taste each other's food. I really liked hubby choice. However, I was not that thrilled with mine, but I did eat it- it was kind of watery, I thought the sauce would be creamy like hubby's dish. After dinner,we ordered dessert, hubby had the cinnamon bread pudding, where I had the berry cobbler. Both were good in my eyes. Now, this is where I was a little taken aback once the check came. This was my third visit here, and I have never although given less than four stars, today I have to go with three, mainly because of the food service. My daughter and I came for dinner (our second visit together). I ordered the Original Greek Salad and added salmon for an additional $14 (I'll get to that in a moment). My daughter ordered the French onion soup and the Chesapeake. Unfortunately, by 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday, they were out of all appetizers except the wings ‍. We sat at the bar at 7:27 p.m. and placed our full order with Zack, who was great. However, we didn't receive our meals until 8:40 p.m., and that was only after I asked about it. I was starving and honestly confused about how a salad with salmon and a seafood pasta dish could take that long. There were no apologies offered, which was disappointing. As for the food itself, my daughter enjoyed her meal, and I did enjoy mine as well. The salmon was seasoned nicely and cooked to my requested medium temperature. However, the portion size for a $14 add on was, quite frankly, insulting. It was extremely small and not proportionate to the cost. Overall, this visit felt subpar and not up to the standard I've come to expect from Blackwall Barn & Lodge Columbia. The restaurant also didn't appear as clean as I've seen it in the past. We have been back a few times over the last year, and the food and service were okay. Our last visit was for dinner around 7 pm on a Wednesday night, and we were seated quickly since we had a reservation, but that was the only good part of the evening. The restaurant wasn't busy, and we ordered drinks right away, but they took forever to be served to us. The food was horrible. The lemon chicken linguine consisted of hundreds of small pieces of broken overcooked pasta, swimming in a pool of butter sauce like a soup, with a very small serving of chopped chicken, and the chef used the bottoms of the asparagus stalks in the pasta which were so hard and stringy that they could not be chewed. The crab cake was very wet and mushy, and tasted more like fish than crab, sort of as if a watery crab dip with too much filler was used to make the crab cake, just a very strange consistency for a crab cake. The pickle served alongside the crab cake was not edible, because the skin on the pickle was very thick and plastic-like, not even able to be cut with a knife. The only items that were okay were the kids cheese pizza and the fries. We let the server know about the issues with the food, even noting that we could not eat most of it, showing her the broken pasta soup, un-chewable food, and watery crab cake, and she did not seem to care at all - just said "oh okay", took the uneaten food away, and left. I was fully expecting her to send a manager over, but that never happened. I was shocked at the horrible food and poor service, especially given the amount we paid and tipped for the meal. read more

Came here with my family on a weekday afternoon. We wanted to take advantage of Blackwall's happy hour deals with half price pizza, so we got a caprese, shrimp scampi (odd to have shrimp on pizza, prob never again), and short rib (like French onion soup w/a ton of meat) pizzas. The caprese and shrimp pizzas had globs of cheese... so heavy. The short rib was not bad, but all of them were oily. The pizza was better after taking it home and air frying it, and removing some of the cheese. But I wouldn't get any of them for takeout. I also got a strawberry hibiscus mocktail - a little on the sweet side, was $8, ok but not mind blowing to be paying $8 for a drink like this. The decor was quite nice and I could see it as a good space for gatherings, but the floor was super slippery - very odd. Was a scary walk to the bathroom because of the slipperiness. I came here for a belated bday lunch with a gf. This was my first visit and a pleasant experience. Our server, Crystal (fire red hair) gave us excellent service. This is a relaxed, yet refined environment - pretty quiet. We had espresso martinis and sparkling lemon water to start. My gf's Caesar salad was a great size and we both enjoyed the Brussels (hers had bacon, mine did not). I recommend you try the Grilled branzino, Braised Short Ribs and the French onion soup. This was our first visit to celebrate an anniversary on a Sunday evening, which was not crowded. The restaurant is large and decorated like a lodge, which is similar to Clyde's Tower Oaks Lodge in Rockville. It is a farm direct restaurant so food served is fresh. Our server was Kayla who was very helpful. She told us the best dishes to try on the menu. Due to food allergies, she checked with the kitchen staff on substitutions and if additional fees would be charged. We ordered the braised beef short ribs and Chesapeake pasta. The entrees were large. I enjoyed the beef short ribs which was flavorful and came with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes. However, my spouse had the Chesapeake house made pasta that came with 4 shrimps and crabmeat. There was very little crabmeat on it for $36 so not worth getting. We were seated in a small dining room away from the main dining room. It was difficult to get WiFi service on our phones. Country vocal music played throughout the meal. Located right on the plaza, we stepped into the Blackwall barn & lodge on a Sunday evening. The interior is relaxed with lodge-like vibes. They have ample amount of bar seats as well as interior dining tables and seating out on their patio. The plating and prices are on the fancy side, but I liked the laid back feel of the restaurant. I've tried many of their cocktails and you can't go wrong with any of them! They are also presented beautifully. The bartenders are always super attentive and our food was brought out quick. We were given cheese biscuits at the beginning of the meal and they were so delicious I'm still thinking about them to this day! Their menu is filled with rustic eats, I found the red brick chicken to be absolutely delicious. It was a very generous serving of chicken on top of creamy mashed potatoes and squash. The whole meal was seasoned quite well (I'm someone who douses everything in salt). My partners crab cake sandwich was standard, he likes it with lots of plain old lump crab, and this one had a bit too much filler for his liking. The fries however got demolished. Came here to dine one night and had the beef & barley soup, Chesapeake Pasta, and Smith Island cake. The Barley soup was average nothing amazing. The server informed me over half an hour later that the order for pasta didn't make it to the kitchen and put in a rush order, came out within 10 minutes and I think the manager served it. Chesapeake pasta was really delicious, the shrimp was well cooked, but sadly not a lot of crab, but overall good. The Smith Island cake was also good, it was the red velvet flavor, not too dry but wasn't as moist as I'd hope it'd be. The cake wasn't overly sweet which I've enjoyed immensely, hate overly sweetened cake/frosting. Blackwall Barn and Lodge was such a treat! Came here with one of my friends for her birthday and she loved it. I love the look of this restaurant. It has an elevated rustic look to it and ample seating. I saved up an appetite for this place because I had it in my bookmarks for a while. So we were bought some table biscuits, which were served with chive butter. The biscuits were soft and were served warm. I couldn't tell if it was jalapeño pieces baked into them but they were delicious with the chive butter. I ordered the Chesapeake pasta and my friend ordered the snake bite pasta. The Chesapeake pasta was a nice serving of lump crab, shrimp, asparagus, heirloom, tomatoes, and a lobster cream sauce. It was so flavorful and had a slight smoky flavor to it that made me enjoy the dish even more. Because it was a large serving I was able to take half of it home. I ordered the berry cobbler for dessert. Just seemed like more of a cake that wasn't cooked enough topped off with warm fruits and whipped cream. I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have wanted to, but the ambience, the service, and the main dish made up for that. My friend enjoyed her food and her chocolate cake. It was a very rich. It's been awhile since I've been here. My recent experience was much better than my previous visits in their early days. I met some friends for happy hour (aka gathering hour) yesterday and our server/bartender, Natasha was great. Thank you for your great customer service. The happy hour ends at 6 and is only at the bar and in the bar area. Not sure if it's extended to the patio but it doesn't hurt to ask. A few of us ordered pizzas, which were half off. It's large enough to share. We got the short rib and buffalo chicken (half bacon on one side since i don't eat pork). They were very nice about making the accommodation. A high end restaurant with rustic charm. Blackwall Barn & Lodge serves up American food via high dining. It's a steakhouse that serves so much more with beautiful decor featuring scenes of nature, animals, and art made from wood and antlers. The food and vibe are cozy and you'll feel utterly relaxed by the time you leave. Our server was extremely knowledgeable of the menu. He had to explain half of it to me and the other guests at our table, which he did so expertly. He made great recommendations including drink pairing suggestions. Blackwall offers traditional dinner meals, but also a weekend brunch and super late night exclusive meal. While I haven't enjoyed these yet, they are on my must-try list. My favorite appetizer I had was their crab dip. It's a bubbling bowl of melted cheeses and local crab, heavily seasoned with garlic, and served on fire with brandy so it's EXTRA melty when they first serve it. The fried green tomatoes were also quite good, being very crispy and cut extra thin to allow more bread coating per tomato. For my main course, I enjoyed the beef short ribs. The meat was so tender and juicy, and served with fresh vegetables. It was extremely satisfying. My wife enjoyed fish and grits. Her fish was flaky and juicy, and her grits were some of the best either of us have had. Blackwall has an extensive wine and liquor list as well as excellent cocktails that I recommend if you don't plan on driving because they hit hard. Blackwall's pricey, but excellent meals make it a great spot for a treat-your-self occasion. read more

We went here for a quick bite before the Sturgill Simpson show at Merriweather. The service was great, we were able to sit right away and they had a nice outdoor space which was great for how lovely the day was. We ordered fairly quickly and they were very accommodating. The old fashioned I really enjoyed, they muddle the cherry and orange before adding the whiskey so the flavors all mix nicely. I got the Mahi Mahi dish which was good, but I would have preferred a different sauce and side. Hubby's Waldorf salad was average. We were psyched for the berry cobbler because it presented sooo well, but were disappointed that it was mostly dough and very little berry underneath. Had a great dinner - the service is attentive and knowledgeable -(thanks Riley!) - the ambiance is nice we were in a room off to the side so it did not feel so open to all the hustle and bustle and was quoted as there were quite a few parties happening at the same time - we got the flaming crab dip to start which was good and seems special but is not that different from any other crab dip - my son actually did not like the hint of brandy that flavored the dip after the flames died down- we got the spicy Italian pizza which was too spicy for my son but not at all spicy to me but the sausage seemed a little porky- we finished it though - son had a burger which was perfectly cooked - I had chicken Cobb salad which was good but a little too salty - hubby had scallop and shrimp risotto which also was good but a little too salty. Some girlfriends and I had a long overdue dinner planned and we chose Blackwall Barn & Lodge. It was our first time there. The ambience was really cool. The outside was like a country barn. The inside is definitely a lodge setting. Very cool. Two friends split a bottle of wine and the other two had the peach iced teas. Very tasty. The food was really good. The brussel sprouts were a great way to start the meal. The apple salads were delicious! We also ordered different pizzas. The mushroom and arugula was a hit. Just wished the bottom was cooked a bit longer. One friend had the french onion soup but said it was "okay." From the look of it, the soup sat under the broiler too long as parts of the cheese were clearly burnt. The chocolate peanut butter pie was a great way to end the evening. We highly recommend making a reservation to dine here. One of our friends wouldn't be seated because she couldn't remember the name the reservation was under. The hostesses were not too nice with her. The service was rather slow but there was plenty of staff. We saw other servers far more often than we saw our own. He would take a lot of time to take our drink and appetizer orders. Then take a long time to return with water. The staff also wasn't great about pulling plates and glasses away to make room for the salads and entrees. Our biggest issue was the bill. Watch for it. If you use a credit card, you will pay extra. So plan on taking cash if additional charges bother you. We used debit cards and they put an additional charge on the receipt. My receipt specifically said that it was a debit charge and the additional fee was added. What irked me the most was that I specifically asked the server to make sure a debit card was going to ring up as a cash payment. I told him that I'd pay cash if the charge was added to debit purchases. He said he would come back to let us know so I could give him cash. He took so long and didn't come back until the charges were on out receipts. He never came back to tell us about the additional charges. We were very disappointed with that. We went for my wife's birthday dinner. She really hoped for French Onion soup to celebrate on a cold night. I searched and found Blackwall had good reviews AND had the soup. The high ceilings and decor really made it feel like we were in a National Park lodge in the middle of Columbia MD. Our server, Azarea, was a tremendous help. She made food recommendations based on answers to good questions. To make sure the best wine was selected, she brought over the bartender, Mike. He offered some suggest and gave her a few sample tastings. In the end, the wine went perfectly with her food. They made a special dessert cake for her! Azarea and I did our best singing (without too much embarrassment). All in all it was a delicious and fun experience. We will be back soon! read more

Can't remember if I've left a review for this place from our last experience. We've been here a few times. Very good food. Nice atmosphere, especially if you can get a table further back near the wall. They often have some live acoustic entertainment which we enjoy. It's been very crowded during all of our visits. I dined at BB & L on a Saturday afternoon with a large dinner party in a private room. The restaurant is very nice with modern touches. The service was outstanding. Shout out to Ethan and another server who were assigned to our party. The food was excellent in taste and presentation. We had a wonderful time. I had the blackened pasta with shrimp, sausage and chicken. My hubby ordered the braised short rib. My son ordered the kids pizza, which was huge, and my mom ordered the New York strip. My wife and I went today for Valentine's Day lunch (dinner service was booked/unavailable weeks ago) for the first time and we THOROUGHLY enjoyed the food, ambiance, and service. My wife ordered the seafood risotto and I had the lodge salad and both were tasty and plentiful (I don't know what the reviewers who complained about portion size are talking about), so much so we have leftovers for dinner tonight. Stop in today literally around 215pm. The restaurant not full. With a friend and my wheel chair bound mother. The hostess looked at us and offered a hi tip table. I advised her that my mother is whee chair bound cannot sit in a high top. She said well without a reservation they were full for the rest of the day. For reference the restaurant is no where near full. We went across the way to smashing grapes. We Were immediately seated. For kicks and giggles I decided to check the reservations online and there were several available for today. We never got the opportunity to try the food. And never will. read more

We've been here a few times but this visit was not as good as our previous visits. Plus side was the service. Other than a longer wait our server was very friendly. We also had multiple managers check on us which was different from prior visits. The food wasn't at the same level as prior visits. I had mahi which had little flavor. Overall - 3.5/5 Service (1/1) - Wife and I went in for a lunch date and found the service to be very pleasant. Crowd was low but the server was very attentive either ways. I let her know we are vegetarians and she explained through the vegan menu but also other vegetarian friendly items from the main menu. She also helped us understand Blackwall's mission, explanation of farm to table and local sourcing. She had regular check ins with us as well. Setting (1/1) - Blackwall is located in the new complex with many great restaurants such as Dok Khao and Tostique. However, Blackwall provides its own unique experience. They have well decorated outdoor sitting but even bigger inside. Setting allows you to come for work, friends outing, or dates. Only issue I had was with the booths, table legs are awkwardly positioned, coming in way going in and out. Drinks (0.5/1) - with trying only two drinks, we had a mix experience. One was overly sweet while the other was overly sour. Balance was off on both such that I ended up ordering a coke. Concepts of the drinks are great but execution could be better. Food (1/2) - Now to the food, food was really great for the most part. Quality of the ingredients were top notch. Started with Caprese Canoe with a nice sweet and tangy dressing accompanied by olives, cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, and fresh mozzarella. This was definitely our favorite dish out of all we tried. The Brussel sprouts were well cooked and tasted decent but lacked crispness for me. Side of asparagus was average. For main course the pizza was average as well with the crust a bit on the chewy side. It also seemed the pizza was dunked in oil, with all that cheese releasing tons of it, partly the reason of the dough loosing its crunch. Lastly the risotto for me was the biggest let down. Under seasoned, undercooked, and missing flavor. I love a good risotto but this let me down. Harissa did bring a hint of spiciness but that was it. The dish was only taking one direction. I had to pack it and asked my wife to help me redress it at home. Overall, the vibes are great and some of the dishes had decent flavors but I felt wanting more, expecting even better next time. read more

Review Blackwall Barn and Lodge Columbia Nice to get out from these freezing temperatures and celebrate a birthday. This restaurant is well appointed with a Wild Western country home feel to it. But it's all about the food today. We had their popular Flaming Crab Dip with its entertaining presentation of flambé at the tableside. Creamy cheese with crab dip was tasteful served with several finger sized naan pieces to dip. We also enjoyed the Fried Green Tomatoes with Cherry Peppers and Garlic Crab Remoulade that added an additional kick. Lunch selections: Chicken Pot Pie- served hot with the a generous filling of chicken peas, carrots, mushrooms and other veggies blended with what I had hoped would be a thicker herbed sauce. It was tasty and very filling, I could not finish the whole thing. Lodge Burger- is what I have enjoyed before. It Valooks fully loaded with cheddar cheese, nice thick pieces of bacon, onions and the other fixings. My husband did not want the fries (but they are nice and crispy) so it can be replaced with a side dish. We went with the roasted Brussels sprouts that had a huge mound of crispy bits of bacon and shallots with a honey Dijon mustard sauce that he appreciated. Lemon Chicken Linguine- they make their own house- made pasta daily. So the birthday girl enjoyed her dish. Desserts: Sorry no pictures were taken. I wasn't fast enough. But found the Decadent Chocolate Cake, moist and not too sweet. Peanut Butter Cake- was a bit heavier and sweeter but easily demolished by our group. Wait staff person was very helpful and gave us nice explanations of the days specials. He was attentive in the beginning but then we didn't see him for longer periods as the restaurant got busier. A nice place today come and celebrate a special occasion or to just have a break from your own kitchen. Food is tasteful, well presented and satisfyingly tasty and filling. read more

I have visited this restaurant's Gambrills location several times and decided to try this location out while visiting the area. I love the look and feel inside of this establishment. The lighting, tone, textures, and overall design is identical to its other restaurant but felt even more cozy. My waiter/bartender was excellent. He was extremely nice and personable and he made me the best lemon drop martini and purple rain drink. I can't wait to return in the near future. read more
