The Blackwater Smokehouse Restaurant - pretty disappointing. We ordered beef brisket to go. When we got to our cabin, a five minute drive away, the brisket was room temperature and pretty flavorless. There was not even enough BBQ sauce on it to add any flavor. The corn muffin and cole slaw (very small side) were good. The tiny side of beans tasted a lot like canned Campbell's pork and beans. Positives: Room was small but clean and the beds were decent. Complimentary soaps and lotion were a nice touch in the bathroom. Parking was ample and just steps from the front door. Lodge itself is dated however appropriate for a state park / nature preserve. Love the hiking trails and wildlife (we explored three different trails and were blown away by the natural beauty of this place), and took amazing pictures. The restaurant in the lodge is clean but the coffee is like brown hot water; breakfast buffet bland at best. Waitress was actually sweet and refilled our coffee frequently; she got a fat tip ;-) Negative: My one issue is the unfriendliness of the people in this area West Virginia, which surprised my husband and I. One would think an area dedicated to tourism would do more to welcome outsiders with a smile, make eye contact, and warm small talk. We went to the same gas station twice during our visit and greeted the employees but each time were met with blank stares and no verbal response. And in the lodge, a forest ranger walked by us multiple times and never once made eye contact; is it wrong to expect some basic friendliness? Staff smiled once if I recall now, when it was time to check out and pay the bill (SMH); really? I would have loved a warmer welcome, an offer to go over the park map (which was not even offered to us), anything to make us want to stay or return for that matter...it's disheartening now that I am home and have this memory. I was stumbling through the woods after agreeing to being hunted for a day by a wealthy coal magnate and happened upon this delicious brunch spot. My clothing was tattered, and I was missing a toe, but I was still greeted with a friendly smile and a "how do you do." The sausage gravy was delicious, and the crispy bacon restored my faith in the god that I thought had abandoned me during the hunt. I will be coming back very soon. read more

Dated lodge that appears well maintained despite its age. Didn't stay in the lodge but rather came to check in here for a cabin. Most notable was the friendliness of the staff. There is a restaurant too which I didn't try and a gift shop that I visited selling souvenirs like t-shirts, postcards, books, ball caps etc. Plenty of parking in front and if you step outside in the back of the lodge their is a very nice view. read more

The restaurant at the lodge, now dubbed "The Smokehouse" has changed its genre with an updated menu to include a variety of barbecue items, and a solid menu of other offerings as well. The ribs were a bit small, but far better than what you'd expect from a hotel restaurant; they came with cole slaw, baked beans, and a cornbread muffin that were all a great complement to the meat. My wife had some sort of pasta, and was happy with it as well. Both of us got more food than we expected, but it was still a bit overpriced for what it was. Made a reservation online and paid for the room. Was charged half the cost. Said when you checked in that you'd be charged the balance. Paid the balance when I checked in and when I checked out the next day, they told me I owed the full amount! They made me pay the full amount again even though I had my receipts. That means a lot to me to be able to get out of Richmond for a week and go out to eat an not worry so much about my family's well being while eating out. This restaurant was uncommonly good for a restaurant in a state park. They have a good selection of different entrees (it's not all barbecue). Our party of 8 tried a variety of things on the menu, and nobody was disappointed. Beef pot roast is a best seller, for good reason. It wa tender and well seasoned, with very good mashed potatoes and gravy and well cooked vegetables. Comes with a salad bar (not many selections, but we got there just a few minutes before the 8 pm closing time) and rolls. Meatloaf wasn't at all greasy and also came with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. Vegetarian pasta got good reviews for being flavorful. Glazed salmon was also good. The only disappointing dish was the lasagna - I thought it had too much ricotta cheese and not enough meat. All in all, a very nice surprise! read more

We were excited to try this since we had hiked for the day. Wow it's a big dining room there was only one waitress working and she was obviously overwhelmed. When I asked for a glass of wine she said that they are completely out of wine and beer. I've never been to a place that this is happened. The pork sandwich was very good. We ended up going back to nights later and had to wait 40 minutes to get a table because there wasn't enough waitresses. It took 20 minutes for someone to wait on us and another 20 minutes to get water. This time they had one type of wine. It took a very long time for our food to come and it was cold and overcooked. Overall I think this could be a great place but they obviously need better staffing and better management. I believe the food would be very good if they could get those other things straightened out. This review is for the restaurant. We did not stay in the lodge but the restaurant was the best place we ate at when we visited. I believe this restaurant was just redone & revamped. The name is The Smokehouse. The first time we visited we ate on the lunch menu. I ordered a burger that you make how you wanted. I got Brioche bun, American cheese, & fried egg on my burger. It was by far one of the best burgers I have ever ate. It was amazing. We went back for dinner another night to check out the menu. Again we were seated immediately. We ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms and they were amazing. They came in a butter sauce that was to die for. I ordered the brisket and mu husband ordered the Alaskan Pollock. My brisket was perfect! It was so good & the portion was huge. I couldn't finish it all. My husband fish looked so good. The fish was over a foot long. It was cooked perfectly. We over heard people saying the restaurant hires at risk teens and adults who are trying to change their life for the better. On top of nice food they are also bettering others. read more

Server was very nice. However to call it The Smokehouse is incorrect. My husband and I got the half chicken dinner described as smoked and rubbed. It was not smoked it was baked with BBQ sauce on it. The closest smoke to the chicken was the campfire down the road. Cole slaw was weak with no dressing. Beans were pretty good. Corn bread very good. The French Onion soup was okay. Inexpensive furnishings when new, now worn, has an institutional feel, today dated looking and needs remodeling. My husband and I spent the night at Blackwater Lodge last night. The check in was very quick but when we were handed a 1950's room key I should have known it was a sign. Let me give the good things about the room first: the bed was very beautifully made and was very comfortable and the room was very clean. There was a large flatscreen TV mounted on the wall and the cable offering was fairly good. Beyond that there were no other positives. The bathroom was straight out of the '50's and looked like it had had no updating since it was built. The tile had been painted and it was peeling terribly. The tub was permanently stained and not very inviting for a bath at all. There were only towels for two people. Now we are only two people but the motels I frequent have 4 or more towels per room. The carpet was not very worn, however it was like indoor/outdoor carpet and not good quality. Except for the bed, the furniture was pathetic! The walls were old paneling and the wiring had been added on top of the paneling and covered with metal strips. The TV wiring was all down the side of the wall and plugged into a serger that hung down from the bottom of the TV. There was no microwave/refrigerator in the room and when my husband asked if he could use a microwave at the desk, they said they had no microwave! The overnight fee was not too much, however the accommodations weren't worth half of the fee. We were both so disappointed and will not be staying at the Blackwater Lodge until it is completely remodeled! We will be staying at Canaan Valley instead! read more

Someone needs to inform park superiors that the food has been going steadily downhill for the past 7 years! We finally gave up on the Lodge food 5 years ago, the cook even managed to mess up the hallmark bean soup, burnt it. How can you burn soup? They managed, The service is great, but their cooks cannot cook to save their lives, and it keeps getting worse every time we check to see if it still sucks, it does, big time! It is a real crime too, the dining room has the most awesome views of the valley, three glass walls with beautiful nature all around. I was told the park superintendent is in charge of the hiring here, he or she is a flaming idiot, they obviously have never eaten there own food. We stay at the cabins and cook ourselves, the food at the lodge could ruin an otherwise marvelous place otherwise! Frankly, it doesn't even rate one star, but Yelp doesn't have negative ratings. read more

The food is very good at this restaurant. This was the second year I have stayed at the lodge for a holiday weekend and I ate most of my meals in their restaurant. I particularly liked the country fried steak, the corn bread, and the weekend buffets are always a hit with our crowd. This year 11 friends joined me at the lodge and there were no complaints about the food! It was very convenient for a quiet weekend and the staff are very friendly and efficient. read more

The hotel is very well kept and clean. Most of the staff is friendly and helpful. I would advise checking to make sure they do not have any events going on here if you would like to have a large variety to pick from for dinner.
