As a reflection of my last visit here, I have reduced stars from 5 to 3. While the owner and the manager on duty, as well as the waiter who took over, did make quite an effort to salvage the experience, I still have to acknowledge the catastrophe that put them in the position to do so. Arriving just 30 minutes after opening, we were approached by our waitress, Jessica. Under normal circumstances her coworkers say that she is quite the staff member however, in light of her dogs recent illness, so she decided to make her customers an outlet. Rather than getting into all of the nitty-gritty details, the last thing she said, in reference to our table was accompanied by profanity. In all my years I've never seen somebody be so bold and for the behavior to be reinforced without penalty, makes for an atmosphere less than comfortable. We did have an extraordinary individual take over on her behalf named Sean. This gentleman has exquisite food knowledge with tantalizing recommendations, and was able to assume our needs before having to request. He even ensured that Jessica remade our old fashions with a baller cube (like she had originally) rather than straining the cocktails that were sent back with chipped ice, into a new glass, watered down and adding a new cube. The beverage fiasco was what had us request a manager for the second time with the first being when she took offense to us asking for an entrée that had been described at the table next to us through the server who has described it. This review could quickly go into a novel however, I will leave it here and just say that I normally give out 4 to 5 star reviews, as long as each of the check boxes for food, service and ambience are professional. That is not what Jessica represents and I think she does a disservice to this restaurant. read more

First time here, wanted something Italian for an early dinner. We were seated right away in main hall (indoors) as it was ridiculously hot out. We ordered the calamari appetizer, linguine alle vongole, pappardelle ai funghi e oilio tartufato, and cioppino. We oddly had our entreés served before the appetizer, but that's OK. We all ate everything together anyway. The calamari was very salty and not as crispy. The linguine alle vongole was bland, very heavy on the wine taste. The pappardelle ai funghi was good though. My husband requested meatballs on his plate, which were just mediocre. Large in size though. Now the cioppino- this dish stole the show. It was delicious! The amount of seafood in it was also good. It comes with a side of bread (sourdough?), which was delish with the cioppino. It wasn't the best cioppino I've had, but it was still pretty delicious. The downside was it was HOT. We were seated by the door with intermittent breeze, but still... it felt humid and very warm inside the restaurant. Wish it were cooler inside, but it's just the restaurant itself. They tried by having the ceiling fans going. The interior is trendy. The service was overall good. Although it took awhile to request the check and to get it processed. I think they got busy so they forgot to stop by our table for some time. So we just grabbed a random employee to have our check processed. Then there was an older gentleman who stopped by to see how our time was at the restaurant (perhaps the manager vs owner?), which was nice. He was very pleasant. Overall, good dining experience. Nothing spectacular, but I appreciated the trendiness and the portions of the items. It satisfied my Italian craving regardless! read more

This place has been on my list for awhile. Excited to finally go. Service was really good. Our waitress was nice and gave food recommendations. We waited a bit longer than we would have liked for our check, but I understand staffing problems. My husband and I ordered the truffle pizza and the paparadelle bolognese with meatballs. The pizza was good- I loved the mushrooms, but it felt like it was missing something. Maybe a bit of salt? I couldn't put my finger on it. Also, the dough wasn't our favorite. It got soggy in the middle and burnt on the crust. The bolognese was delicious! Loved the cook on the pasta and I liked the meatballs a lot! My husband said the meatballs could be better, but hey! Here's a review based on your experience: --- I've visited this restaurant a few times and while the food is decent, my most recent experience was disappointing. Our group of six had a 20% tip automatically added to the bill, which totaled $45. On top of that, they charged us an extra $20 for cutting two pieces of cake that we brought from outside. What made it worse is that we weren't informed about this fee beforehand. We didn't even ask the waitress to cut the cake--she did it on her own and then added the charge. We would have been happy to cut the cake ourselves, but she insisted on doing it. I believe that if you're already adding a substantial tip to the bill, a cake-cutting fee is unnecessary. Unfortunately, this experience has really soured my opinion of the place, and I won't be returning anytime soon. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in to Blade 1936 on a whim, looking for somewhere nice on a Monday. Nicole immediately started off our night amazingly, we had Cabernet Sauvignon on happy hour! (btw happy hour is all night on monday & tuesday!) Service was very impressive, food was amazing. We loved our meals, ended our night with a cannoli ( my absolute favorite.) Atmosphere was comfortable, we sat in the back room which I enjoyed, it felt more personal. Being in the service industry the last 6 years it's hard to find a place with great service and great food. 10/10 recommend this spot. We came to Blade 1936 for a long overdue date night. The venue is in a historic building and looked fun and lively from the outside. Once inside, the restaurant has a strange ambiance with a mix between a higher-end Italian restaurant merged with a sports bar. In my opinion, there were way too many TVs inside for this to be a serious date night place. The menu was a bit too large in my opinion. Usually, the greater the number of menu items, the worse the restaurant from my experience. We tried two of their cocktails right after sitting down: the Buona & Basito ($13), which is 5-year aged white rum, ginger, Luxardo liqueur, lime, mint, and Pellegrino; and the Donnnaiolo ($13), which is gin, orange Curacao, fresh grapefruit, agave, sea salt, rosemary. Both drinks were served in bizarre glassware with way too much regular bar ice (not any particular ice that would be appropriate for these cocktails). For such fancy, upscale-looking cocktails from the way they were presented on the menu, the presentation was more like a dive bar. We had to send them back and ask for them to be redone with half the ice - still served in the wrong glassware but way better tasting. For the food, we went with the Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina + Shrimp ($31.50) and Brasato Di Manzo Al Vino Rosso, which is short rib with gnocchi ($34). The Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina had a pretty nice presentation and the flavor was good but not outstanding. The short rib with gnocchi had awful presentation like salisbury steak with drippy, watery sauce moving around the plate and mixing with the butter on the gnocchi - ick. The flavor was hilariously bad. The entire point of short rib is to braise it so that it is moist and falls off the bone. This short rib was rubbery and tasted like it had been microwaved. The portion was also skimpy, which was a ripoff for a $34 dish. Overall, Blade 1936 somewhat presented itself from the exterior and from its menu as a fine dining restaurant. But in reality, the cocktail program and the food were poor. read more

This place seemed upscale online, but it's not. It's fairly casual, just modern and by the beach. The sangria was great! But the plate (chicken) I had was not. I came here on a whim with my partner after our planned date-night restaurant was closed! I have been trying to make a point to come here ever for like, 2 years, and luckily I finally got around to it. While I was under the impression the restaurant was a bit more upscale, that's no problem at all. We came inside and really were digging the decor. I am sure the natural lighting during the day comes through perfectly through the large statement windows they have. I got the Pappardelle Ai Funghi E Olio Tartufato...it was absolutely delicious. The umami flavors really popped, and I loved the texture of the pasta. You can really tell it was made fresh. It has the perfect chew to it...whew. It was delightful!! My only suggestion would maybe be a bit less mushroom, by the time I was done, I had so much mushroom leftover! And I took some with every bite of pasta! But I know some people LOVE mushrooms like that so maybe keep it as is, who knows. Our server was kind and so was the hostess. Very standard! I hope in the future they add more pasta dishes without a tomato-base. I know so many sauces are, but all my favorites aren't tomato-based (hence why I got this dish, and I did see a couple others as well). A mushroom gnocchi would be delicious! Conveniently located right by the transit station in Oceanside is Blade1936. We had a group of 12 and they were able to accommodate us with a reservation and place us in the back room. They even offered to store our cake, cut it, and serve it after dinner. There is a large menu with plenty of great options. I tried several appetizers including the bruschetta but I ordered the Caprese salad, and the pesto pasta with chicken. All were delicious. I also got to try some of the pizza. I was very happy with all of the food, everything was great. My only complaint was the noise. It was incredibly loud in the back room but it was a Saturday night, it was fully packed, the world series and football were on the TVs. We had to scream across the table at each other to be able to hear each other. The room was sparse, all concrete and wood, no carpet, so lots of echoes and noise in that room. But it was able to accommodate all the age ranges in our party including little ones. We came here several weeks ago to celebrate my husband's birthday! SERVICE - The waiter that helped us was nice but he seemed distracted. The football game was on and every time he stopped by, he would watch the games a bit before actually saying anything to us. It was a big odd. There was also another waiter that came by to clear our plates and he did not make eye contact when asking if we needed boxes. He spoke very quickly as if he was reading from a script and hurried away. The best part of the service was when the owner walked around to tables to ask how the food was. He was a sweet older man who seemed very passionate about his restaurant. That was a nice touch. FOOD Calamari - Never again. They were so soggy. It was like they threw it in the fryer to see the breading brown and then left it soaking in oil. I don't know, it was not crispy at all. Truffle Fries - Just like the calamari, these were so soggy! It was almost undercooked as well. The potatoes were not fluffy and soft inside. Rigatoni con Salsiccia e Funghi - My husband got this one and enjoyed it but preferred mine more. Pappardelle ai Funghi con Olio Tartufato - I got this was added sausage and it was so good! The pasta was perfectly al dente. The sauce was creamy. The sausage gave it the nice meaty addition. Oh my goodness, just wrapped up dinner and the service was god awful. I love the apps and pasta here but the servers and bartenders lack training... For example, we ordered a scotch on the rocks with a soda water on the side and it was served to us combined with a salt rim? What? And then the second time it was still a scotch and soda combined, no salt rim. Then the third time it was just scotch, no rocks smh. Not sure if the bartender doesn't know what "on the rocks" mean? Plus, no water refills, dirty dishes piling up on our table, etc. Other than that, it was 15 min after we were seated before we were acknowledged, and it took a while to get the check even though our waitress was just standing by the register. The table next to us was also struggling to be noticed. Better off at allmine next door, and maybe better service coming when the new amalfi restaurant opens up. Blade 1936 hosted a fantastic milestone birthday for our boisterous group of 30 people. We reserved the back room in a custom table configuration. It wasn't a typical layout but they were accommodating and happy to try our approach. There is nothing more they could have done to make such a great night possible. The cocktails were excellent. We enjoyed Lisa Bella's, Manhattans, and other cocktails, and wine. The food was outstanding. Starters were Bruschetta, Pizza Margherita, and Pappardelle Alla Bolognese. Main courses were Bistecca Di Manzo Alla Brace (ribeye steak) and Salmone Alla Griglia Con Erbette (salmon) and both were excellent. Our friends are still talking about the food. Best of all, our server Sean was pulled in a dozen different directions throughout the night and never missed an opportunity to take great care of our friends. He was diligent, friendly, and responsive. He and his team worked hard to serve our loud and enthusiastic crowd. The service made the night for us. Of note, we also dined there before and after the party with the same high quality experiences. We live in Austin but I'd be tempted to make some trips just to go back. Food came out so quickly, we weren't even there for an hour... I requested a pesto gnocchi, not on the menu and they were more than willing to accommodate which I appreciated very much. One big con...no complimentary bread...they have garlic knots on the menu but I mean who doesn't love getting a little complimentary bread before the real thing... All in all, good place. The hubby and I dined outside at Blade 1936 and had a lovely time. The company was wonderful and the staff was superb, friendly, attentive and made you feel welcome. We started with the fried calamari that was served with a really nice marinara. The batter was light and calamari fried to perfection. We then ordered the mushroom risotto which was the best dish of the night. Salted perfectly, Arborio was al dente, mushrooms were cooked down to a nice texture and added a woody taste which was brought home by the cheese laced throughout. My husband ordered the ribeye. The steak was cooked nicely but the sides were very under seasoned. We added the focaccia after we ordered dinner because everyone kept ordering their pizza and we had to try the dough. We were stuffed but still kept going by ending the night with tiramisu, gelato and coffee. The gelato was just okay but coffee was very strong and delightful. All in all, I was pleased with the service and meal and recommend Blade if you're in north county and looking for a solid meal. I think I'd get the carbonara pizza next time because it came highly recommended. read more

For having one inch and another larger rock in my niece's food on 6/10/2024 for dinner. She could have chocked or broken a tooth on not one, but two rocks in her food. Unacceptable. Ruined our celebration. The waiter was apologetic, but no manager came and spoke with us either. The seafood spaghetti is dangerous and kitchen staff is irresponsible to let such a thing happen. Save the cost of this pricey meal that may also cost you a hospital bill. Blade is easily our favorite restaurant in downtown oside.. and probably one of our favorites in all of San Diego County! It's pretty cool that it is a historic building and was previously home to "Blade Tribune" it is not at all "sketchy" as another review said. The food is perfect every single time (I highly recommend the octopus and I don't even care for seafood in general!) The service is phenomenal, and the entire staff is incredibly kind and hard-working! We have had several different servers over the many times we have been there and every single one is knowledgeable, attentive, and accommodating! Evan and Nicole are 2 of our favorite servers, Angelo the chef is amazing and really puts his heart into the food Thomas is one of the bartenders we are familiar with he is also very kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. Kim the owner is such an amazing human, he's always on the floor helping out so the staff can take breaks, I've seen him seating customers, taking orders, or simply being personable talking to tables to see how they are enjoying themselves or need anything. I had my birthday dinner there a few weeks ago... they were very thoughtful to give me a complimentary tiramisu complete with a candle... we had a party of 8 so our table sang happy birthday, not the staff. Personally, I see how busy the servers are I would never ask them to take attention away from other guests to sing (isn't that a chain restaurant thing anyways?) And, if someone doesn't want happy birthday sung to them why force it? I think the staff made the right choice when it came to Kiara's situation with her fiancé. And don't worry Kiara, we took care of Evan for you. Leaving a $1.35 tip says more about your character than it does the service. read more
