Just had dinner here and in the back of my mind I felt that Blakemans is trying to be THE neighborhood summer gem. I have eaten here in the past for take out but there is a inside dining section which serves seafood and other items beach fast food items like quesadillas, sandwiches fries, etc. This time we actually sat inside which was primarily to be in the shade since it's been really hot out... 95°. Personally I wanted to eat outside but the hubby insisted. So the ambiance is shack casual... so casual where you have random fishing net lights, photos and signs that cover the walls with picnic tables, sandy sub flooring and humongous trash barrels between picnic tables and plastic pool chairs. We sat on plastic chairs in the square picnic table by the door to get some sea breeze. They have ceiling fans and screen porch windows in the front. Their silverware was plastic and take out paper plates. Now that I confirmed the beach shanty ambiance, here's the hilarious part.. Blakemans is literally on the beach that shares the changing room on the other side of building by the parking lot. Indoor showers are out of order and zero outside shower to rinse off. So, I am still wearing my beachwear which consists of a well padded bikini top and a fully covered bottom wrap. The host who seated us inside never mentions a dress code but once we ordered our food, our server sublimly said "do you have a shirt you could put on"...lol!!!! Look, I completely respect and understand what an appropriate dress code for dining in but if you looked at this place without any exaggeration, what I wore was completely fitting! Then again, I can understand that this is a private restaurant with dresscode but a) it was practically empty b) the families with babies are way in the back just in case they might have thought a bikini top was distracting ( I don't have huge boobs either) c) it's a beach shack...with plastic ware!!! Did I mention the gigantic trash barrels right next to us?? This is such a joke! Without hesitation I of course complied...I respectfully get it. I changed and wore a crochet netted long sleeve shirt over a bralette...hmmm. Now to the food... I ordered Pinot Grigio wine that arrived in a small bottle with a plastic dental cup hanging over on top that you get on airlines, hubby ordered beer and my daughter ordered a very sugary bottled lemonade...the one that you can dilute with a bottle of water and have two lemonades. We ordered the dozen oysters, a crab cake and the lobster rolls. The Powderpoint oysters were good except I'm surprised it wasn't Island Creek oysters which are actually close by and delicious... Figured they might do business with them. The lobster rolls were just okay. The portions were generous but the flavor was a little off for me. As much as I preferred melted butter on a lobster roll, these were traditionally made with mayo with pieces of celery but they had additional spices which isn't completely necessary if the meat is good and sweet. I eat a lot of lobster rolls and I found that this particular lobster meat on the dryer side with a lite chipotle sauce after taste. Our entrees were served with one small coleslaw which was absolutely horrible and tasted like tartar sauce and their curly fries which were ok. The crab cakes were pretty good and plumpy and I think they mixed a little corn in them. There was no dessert available to order in this fine establishment so no comment there. The service was a bit scattered. I thought we had only one server but they were various servers bringing our food and throwing away our leftovers to the arm length trash barrel. Everyone seem to be relatively polite and the majority of them were recent college students. The only time we saw our original server was at the end when she brought our bill. The eatery have only one unisex bathroom that is handicap accessible..no lock...only a hook...some kid tried to open the door after I yelled "there's somebody in here"...Can this moment get any better? So in conclusion I don't know if I would come come back for a dining experience. It's just not that "wait in line around the corner" place that it could potentially be. There needs to be a lot of changes with everything. I understand that this place has been here historically but things could use a wake up call and "get real" to bring more business...the place was practically empty inside. read more

Amazing casual seafood shack on Duxbury Beach. They have indoor and outdoor/ patio seating with great views. We got the loaded clam chowder to start, which is a must try. The lobster roll was massive and very fresh. Great local beer selection as well (Scituate's own Untold brewing). Highly recommend! read more

Poor service - inexperienced staff seating people. We arrived at 6pm sat at a high top- 25 min and now waitstaff. We talked to the host they said someone would be there soon. Several tables sat after us had been served btw. 15 min still no waitstaff - so we unfortunately had to leave. Mentioned again on our way out to host stand and their response was "thank you have a good night" - not sure they even listened to me. Hosts are very young and have no clue what's going on. Very disappointed will not return. read more

The food is right on time after a day on the beach. I love the fried clams and oysters. The shrimp are huge. We've been told at varying times they are out of lobster or oysters. Older woman approached my daughter with "put a top on" which upset & embarrassed my daughter. Regardless of the lack of tact in how that was said, we adore this place and will come every time we go to beach. Ya, I would rate this place 3 stars. The food was ok, you get a sandwich and a HUGH side of coleslaw. I mean hugh. Kind of weird. As my husband said it's very inexpensive to make coleslaw. It's all about the view I would guess. We almost went somewhere else and I wish we did because they didn't sit us with a view at all and then the food was just a.o.k. The waitress as nice as she was never came over to ask how the food was. I would have liked some ketchup with my meal but I ate it without it because nobody asked...... Oh well, live and learn. Loaded Clam Chowder!!! That alone was worth the price of admission! Was at the beach with friends and were getting hungry and walked over to check it out. Service was great, food is excellent and this hidden gem needs to be visited more frequently now. Did I mention the Loaded Clam Chowder??? Meal in itself and the chowder was thick & creamy and without a doubt, the best clam strips I've ever had!! These strips we're almost as big as some of the area clams with bellies. Jeff's wife Natasha arrived without a reservation and after creating a scene was offered solutions that did not rise to her level of convenience. I am in the band (Jeff's now former band thanks in large part to these reviews) and Jeff didn't even have the time to introduce his wife to us before he was trying to calm her down, it was sad to watch. I arrived at Blakemans at 3:45 that day. I listened as the staff prepared for a huge night. I watched as they set up a makeshift "beer garden" so people would have a place to relax while they waited for their reserved table. I watched the staff run around (literally run) to accommodate their happy patrons. There aren't enough people leaving good honest reviews, just disgruntled malcontents who are never going to be satisfied unless they're at the Ritz. Blakemans, if you read this? You're amazing. Keep doing what you do. Your food is delicious, you work hard and you provide an atmosphere to locals that they would only otherwise find on vacation. Thanks for all you do. Such a short walk from the beach, Less than 50 Yards from the middle point of Duxbury beach. I've been going to Duxbury beach for 43 years; I remember one of my best friend's s Mother drove us to Duxbury on a Saturday, (Thanks Mrs Cookman)! We visited the restaurant and it was special that it kept me thinking about it since then. Over those years I've introduced my beautiful wife, my kids, my Grandson and some relatives to Blakeman's , always hearing wonderful praises of the food and the Aviance. Over those years it has changed only for the better. It's a Restuarant worth visiting... I hope you read this and decide to visit and have the same impact on you as it has in my life. This place is decent if you want fried seafood. They have GREAT taco options with fish and shrimp, but unfortunately those are no longer available at lunch. The Lunch menu is almost sad. A local beach side shack at the end of Gurnet Rd to grab a few beers/wine and some fried apps/seafood. Not overly big but a cozy little spot to relax in for a bit. Few small tables and booths and some high tops. Nothing but seafood (lobster rolls, fishermans platters, raw bar etc) and some apps like french fries, mozz sticks, onion rings, chicken fingers etc. Stuff you want when you're at the beach and on vacation. Few beers on draft, Cape Cod/Cisco and bottles of Corona/bud light/ sam summer. Nice little spot for when the sun is setting and you want something simple and on the beach. Lines form so get there early or be prepared to wait. Not for large groups but up to roughly 5/6 people. Staff working are young, attentive, and nice. You need to ignore those negative reviews. I don't know if they just went on a bad night or what but I can tell you without a doubt that this place is spectacular. The food and environment is what you pay for. And both are wonderful. There is really nothing better than being so close to the beach. The shack itself is very festive and fun. All the decorations are from the beach. The food is absolutely phenomenal and this year they added a new chef to their staff and have weekly specials to add to the menu. Not only is the food and the atmosphere absolutely wonderful, but the staff Blakemans is absolutely amazing. It's a very friendly group of people who are sure to take care of you. Somethings to try are definitely the clam chowder and the fishermans platter. Compared to most other restaurants, Blakemans platter; you really get your bang for your buck. Blakeman's I appreciate the response. I understand the parking fee and menu. However this experience was embarrassing to my company and a poor reflection of the establishment and Duxbury beach. I would suggest improvements to your customer service, as I am sure visitors would not appreciate the tone, etc as I and company were spoken to. Should not be this uninviting to go to a restaurant. Especially being a Duxbury resident, I could have expected a more appropriate response when they were addressed at the restaurant. read more

Place is very beachy, cute theme. Food was great, service was just as good. We had the clam strips, two cups of chowder & a couple beers. Terrible experience last night! We went to Blakeman's last night after an afternoon at the beach. We knew it was greasy, overpriced beach food from previous experience, but they upped the gross factor and added in a ridiculous wait on the food. Biting flies EVERYWHERE did not help. We will not be back again. 30-ish minute wait, livable. Clams were good ($9.25). Onion rings were pretty good ($7). Beer was lukewarm. The wait for entrees was horrendous, and it wasn't even very busy anymore by the time they came. This was made even worse by the waitress hollering to us THREE times times that "Your food will be out Any Minute Now!" My hot lobster roll was soo lame. Cheap mushy bread, piece of lettuce, and decent lobster meat. NO other garnishments or anything. No flavor really, 19 bucks sheesh. Never got my coleslaw or pickle. Hubby got pan seared haddock. Fish was burnt & chewy on edges. Veggies consisted of chewy gross (pan fried?) snow peas and squash, done in soy sauce or something. Neat in concept, but not in reality. $17 Child #1's grilled cheese was "fine." Didn't receive her pickle or coleslaw. $7.75 (adult order) Child #2's hamburger was as expected, pretty good for beach fare. $5.75 Stuff listed above, plus 2 beers, 2 waters, 1 soda, & 1 juice box was $87, plus tip. If it was an awesome beach night experience, like it was on our previous visit, then it probably would've been worth it. But it was tense and a bit baffling (the wait time for food was just weird and awkward), and we left wishing we'd had Duxbury Pizza or just about anything else. A 2 & 1/2 hour meal with 2 kids after a long day at the beach was NOT the way to finish off the day! read more

Unfortunately the prices are very high for a "beach shack" type of establishment, but what you get is good. It is a shame that the use of disposable plates, plastic flatware, and other waste is rampant. No recycling bin for all the plastic bottles brought to the table? My husband enjoyed the Fish and Chips for about $17 - a huge chunk of fish well seasoned and LOTS (too many) of homemade potato chips (sliced deep fried potatoes). They quickly turned soggy. A tiny cup of coleslaw was also included I had clam chowder which is not made by Blakeman's but it was good. The service has always been good - courteous local high school and college students Guests sit at picnic tables and a few regular tables with plastic chairs. You cannot beat the view, though. went to grab some lunch for the family and i while they were on the beach and am surprised to learn that seafood is sit down only... no takeout. the funny thing is that there were only handful of people getting lunch as we were unaware that this beach frankly sucks (all rocks and neglect and $20 parking), and when i ask why not i'm told that the kitchen gets "overwhelmed"... it's the same kitchen for both restaurant and takeout, so what difference does it make if i sit down to eat in or get it to go. and so in the end instead of getting x3 lobster rolls and food for the kids i got a burger, hot dog and chicken fingers. great business model. i certainly wouldn't expect or want the entire seafood menu available as takeout but can't believe that nothing is available. others were surprised by this policy as well. insert sound clip: entry of the gladiators read more

Went last Summer. Will NEVER go back. Overpriced small portions of seafood. Soggy coleslaw and the clams and fish were basic. Have eaten better fish n chips at Friendly's. I agree with the poster below, way overpriced for a beach shack. And for the prices they charge I was given a paper plate ?? Don't even get my started talking about the flies. The waitstaff , oh my gosh, horrible. They are a bunch of high school / college kids who spend more time chatting with each other, The girl we had was rude and very loud. She never offered us any extra's or any compensation when we said we were not happy. Just "oh that's too bad" when we told her. Just awful I don't mind spending money on seafood, I know it can be expensive but this place is just not worth my money. Going to Marshfield this year for my seafood dinners. Haddad's or the Fairview Inn will be my destination. I will probably pay the same price for better service and a much better meal. read more

I have have been going to Blakeman's for many years now and up until this year it has always been a family favorite during the summer. This year they have decided to gouge their customers with prices that you would not pay at Grill 23. Almost every thing on the menu is Market price. This means you will be surprised to find that you have just paid $21.00 for a clam basket, $21.00 for fish and chips....I think you get the idea. This is now the biggest rip off on the South Shore...STAY AWAY....You can always pay $13.50 for a hamburger which used to cost $6.00....I will NEVER go back after my experience read more

not a fan. steamers weren't purged and insanely overcooked, served with hot water (not broth), and the butter had a weird taste. lobster roll was bland and for some reason tasted like they tried to add mustard to the scant aioli. can anyone confirm? it was strange. fries were soggy. every burger that came to the table was black. maybe its the seasoning? either way nobody at the table got the doneness they wanted unless it was medium-well. because they were all pretty much medium well. service was good and the atmosphere is great if you like the beach. i'm going to chalk it up to the young seasonal help in the kitchen prob probably little to no actual kitchen experience. read more

The place starts of great with a little shack with fishnets on the ceiling and memorabilia on the walls and pick nick tables and chairs to enjoy your feast. We immediately think of Woodman's up in Essex and are looking forward to our meal. We order an Ice Tea and Lemonade, the waitress brings us bottled drinks and a cup of lemons. A cup with ice in it would have been good, but we'll survive. We ordered the "Steamers". I've never had steamers worse than these. They used the local Duxbury whole belly clams for steamers. The clams were slimy and soggy in your mouth. The owner admitted they used whole belly clam as "steamers" and says she tried them and thought they were great. Don't get the "steamers", unless you like raw whole belly clams. False advertisement. I'm all for them deep fried, but most New Englanders know you don't use Whole Belly clams as "Steamers". We also ordered what the waitress called a 1.5lb Lobster for $21.00 It was more like a 1lb lobster and they didn't bring a separate bowl to put the shells in. It did come with an ear of corn which was good. The Lobster was overcooked causing the meat inside to shrink and become rubbery. Didn't have that sweat taste. The clam chowder is respectable. Our Waitress wasn't the brightest, but I can' t knock the entire place for that. read more

The Boss Lady and I go a few times every summer. Casual is an understatement. The food is about the best I've ever had in a beach shack, I'd almost call it excellent. I've had my first fish tacos at Blakeman's, they've set my standard. Excellent local craft brews from a plastic "glass" finish the beach experience. Tomorrow, we're going again. Realized and went back less than 5 minutes later (glasses were tucked in back corner of booth) every little 16-18 y/o employee played dumb. My bad for leaving the glasses but I'm 40 now . 2013 was a much better year for Blakeman's. Food quality and service has declined significantly over the past year. . Milk is never fresh and often served spoiled. It has such potential, however, I'm reluctant to go back anytime soon. Best for grilled cheese and onion rings. Go elsewhere for fresh seafood. read more

So happy that Blakeman's is open again for the season!!! Went to supper with friends opening weekend, and it was sold out, but after a 20 minute wait, were able to get a table in a quiet corner and could sit back and enjoy ourselves! Service was sweet, not overly attentive, and we got our fix of fried clams and beer - and delicious spiral fries. Can't wait to go back. The prices were good, not cheap but not high, just about what you'd expect. The chowder is great - flavorful and full of clams! I'd recommend Blakeman's to any clam shack fans. read more

Outstanding! A great night out with friends, followed by take out with my kids the next week! Sampled several items from the menu, the mussels, clam chowder, chicken fingers, burgers and those amazing fish taco's & lobster rolls!! My 13 y/o also said he would walk from the 2nd cross over to get an order (or 5 !) of Blakeman's onion rings!!! Great Great experience, very friendly staff, not to mention the sunset was beautiful and the food was just awesome!! I grew up on the beaches of Hampton Beach and Salisbury Beach, and those beach restuarants were nothing like Blakeman's!! We can't wait to go back!! read more

I am giving two stars because we had a great waitress. I really wanted to love it but, I can't say anything nice about the rest of our night here. We ordered a basket of beer battered onion rings and mussels for appetizers. The onion rings were previously frozen and not that good. The mussels were good, but the broth was nothing but hot water. 1 in the party ordered a grilled chicken salad. $5.50 more for 5 little slices of chicken, which weren't good. Very expensive for a salad. Over $15.00. Another ordered pan seared scallops. They were not pan seared. I'm not sure exactly how they were cooked. They were served w/summer vegetables. The vegetables were fresh, but left a lot of water on the plate, which the scallops sat in. YUCK! Fish tacos were edible. Lots of filler and just a little fish. 2 tacos, were over $18.00. We probably will not be back, unless we go just for a beer. read more
