I had gone so long without a mate. But when I saw Margie, I felt like an oyster. Margie died of botulism in the fall but that spring we had a ball every Tuesday night, we ate fried scallops and made loving incantations at other--the wind blowing in the sheer curtains. Classic seafood joint on the beach. It's one of those "tried & true" places that has been around forever. My husband and I came in for dinner and sat at the bar. We started with a cup of clam chowder and it was lovely; not too thick, not too thin and great seafood flavor! For my entree, I ordered the haddock au gratin with veggies & coleslaw. I came to Schooner's for my first lobster roll, and it was the perfect choice! It was recommended by a local as being a slightly more affordable but still delicious option for seafood. I loved the slightly dive-y but still clean and cute atmosphere and the food was absolutely delicious! The service was fast and friendly too. Have been to Hull, Mass every year to visit family for the last 20+ years, and while I've been to Schooner's several times to have an occasional drink or two, I believe I've only eaten here once prior to this years visit (maybe there's a reason for that...). Same look, nothing about the place has changed or been updated in all those years. Our family decided to place an order for takeout this past Thursday evening, thinking it might be slower than the coming weekend- we were wrong...but hey, that's usually a good sign!! We ordered two cups of the clam chowder (heard it was well known and famous for), two steak tip meals, buffalo chicken tenders (choice of hot), one fried clams meal and one haddock meal. Staff who we placed our order with over the phone was SUPER friendly and helpful- and did let us know it would be a wait. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the same friendly host that took the order and said it would be about another 10-15 minutes- no big deal, said I'd get a drink at the bar and wait. Bar area was pretty full but it seemed as though there were at least two (if not three) bartenders working the bar area. Waited patiently for some time over hearing a very annoyed customer next to me saying to her acquaintance that she had been waiting at least 10 minutes for a drink- needless to say, the food came out and I never was even approached by one of the bartenders- but either was the other patron. Chowder was ok, not to the point of what I would think an establishment would be known for- but ok. Steak tip dinners, were very small in portion for paying $25 each meal and sides were limited offerings (told it was due to it being a Thursday evening). Fish dinner was excellent. No complaints. Clam dinner was good, but not great, especially for being in a seafood area. Chicken tenders were good- but how can you go wrong with chicken tenders? Was in town visiting friends and I recall we had went to this place about 8 years ago, but i could't remember what we had back then. It was a little busy but we were able to sit down right away without a reservation. They were short staffed so the wait to order was a little longer than normal hence the busyness. We ordered drinks first which were a couple mimosa's and a bloody mare. The drinks were delicious and plenty of drink (meaning the perfect size). We ordered some cups of clam chowder before our meal and for our entrees we ordered the lobster roll, beef tips, and the haddock au gratin. The clam chowder is one of the best I've ever had, the perfect amount of clam taste and clams in it, right amount of potatoes and spices. The beef tips were cooked perfect med rare, the fries were cooked nice and crisp, and the veggies had just enough crunch to it. The haddock was so delicious, cooked perfectly as well, the au gratin is what sets this off. The crunch with some melted cheese to go along with the fish that was tender. The lobster roll had plenty of lobster and the roll was very soft, but could've used some seasoning or a better dressing for it. They were short staffed but they still did a good job with getting us the food in a good amount of time and seeing that we had everything. read more

Went to have lunch this afternoon with my daughter and cousin, and while the food itself was ok, the service was absolutely unacceptable. Our server was blatantly rude almost from the moment we sat down. Plates were never placed in front of us--always off to the side like we were being deliberately dismissed. We counted--she walked past our table 13 times without once acknowledging our presence or checking in to see if we "were we ok" or "did we need anything". We asked for water three times. On the third request, she finally brought it out in tiny glass cups, while everyone else in the restaurant had standard fine dining glasses for their water. The message was clear: we were being treated differently, and not in a good way. It was humiliating, infuriating, and deeply disappointing. We came to enjoy a nice afternoon out and left feeling disrespected and devalued. Yes, the food was enjoyable, but service matters, and this was an experience I wouldn't wish on anyone. Instead of a monetary tip, I left a tip on how not to treat paying customers. Do better. read more

I have really tried to support Schooner's, through the ups and downs over the years. It know the restaurant business has always been tough, and is getting tougher. But some really do not themselves any favors. The last few visits have been a disaster -- both in terms of service, and there was something wrong with every meal served. I'm the one who did what I could to make excuses for it -- trying to convince both failing numbers and friends (from the different visits) this is an institution in the area that we need to support. But the support has been really one sided. Then tonight I call An after about an hour of either being on hold for 15 minutes or no answer -- Finally get through to somebody and I'm placing a fairly large order. Again, I'm the one advocating for scooters, I convinced the group that this will be great -- tonight was takeout, although I know it puts pressure on the kitchen, I always tip the same with takeout, we couldn't otherwise dine there tonight. What about halfway through the order -- again I've got my own name on the line here having myself insisted that we ordering from Schooners -- and when I get to prime rib the answer is "We won't do prime rib with take out." What? I can't even imagine the logic here. I didn't order Baked Alaska to go. I ordered literally the only thing on their menu that's not made to order and that travels well. So I had to once again fall on my sword and apologize on Schooner's behalf. I still want there to be a Schooners and want three to be successful. But as restaurants are closing up and down Nantasket, I can guarantee they will be next read more

Probably the best Prime Rib I've had in awhile. GIANT slab of meat, maybe an inch and a half thick, super tender, very flavorful, melted in my mouth On the specials menu only $31.99 after 6pm Guess it sells out quick and I can see why. (We sat down at 5:55) The table next to us was asking for it as soon as they sat down. Our waitress Patty was amazing, she hooked it up with a container of their delicious Au jus to take home since we couldn't finish everything at the restaurant.. She is rude, yells and treats customers like dirt. if you want a table you have to deal with her, and...It's ALMOST worth it. Last week I got their fried chicken plate with butternut squash and mashed potatoes for take out. It was delicious along with the cup of chowder I ordered. Large portions and enough for 2 meals. Yesterday my sister and I went for our annual St. Patrick's Day meal. I had a mix of red and grey corned beef and cabbage with boiled carrots, turnips and potato. Vegetables were perfectly cooked but red corned beef was tough and grey was bland. My sister had smoked shoulder and said the meat was mostly fat and tough. Irish nachos were fries with some sour cream, scallions, and bacon bits. Fries were not completely cooked. Irish coffee and brownie with mint ice cream and chocolate sauce was the best part of the meal. The meat portions were small. Matt our server was terrific! read more

Schooner's has the best Clam Chowder on the East Coast. You've got to give it a try. Everything we've had from here has been fantastic. Today there were 4 of us. First I want to say that I have been here numerous times and each time I've had excellent experiences with both their food and service...until tonight. This review is entirely based on service...or the lack thereof! First time in the bar and I waited briefly for a seat. Here's the problem... once I sat I waited for nearly 10 minutes before even being acknowledged. It was as if the bartender just did not want to look at me. Now, keep in mind there are only about 12 seats at the bar and they weren't lined up at the bar. In fact, as I sat down, there were three seats that opened up. Once the bartender finally acknowledged me, and, thankfully wiped down the bar in front of me and gave me a menu, I waited another 10 minutes before I called it quits and left. I mentioned this to the hostess on the way out and she apologized, but, seriously, no need for anything like this. Is it too much to say,,"Hi. Be right with you."? Part of me wants to say "meh" because we don't want to lose our Sunday afternoon spot from overcrowding! But this place is a gem! Mike is the bartender on Sundays and he is fabulous - so witty and great at his service. Two weeks ago, we got to "hang with the locals" and learned so much about the place and Hull in general. Such a wonderful group of folks! Being from New England originally and living the last five years in Colorado, we couldn't wait to enjoy some great seafood again. This place does not disappoint! My mom got a pizza, and I had the baked haddock which was super French, tasty and a large serving. 2 beers, 1 glass of wine 3 entrees, with baked bread for less than $90???
