Don't get me wrong, the pizza is good here and my wife like their sours, but over $100 for two small pizzas and two four packs of canned beer is ridiculous. And with the way-too-many employees working, it shouldn't have taken a half hour to check and see if there was particular beer left. Stopped in for lunch and was very glad we did! Blaze has several locations and so I had great expectations for the food and service. I was not disappointed. Ordered a beer and the bar tender was very helpful in finding a beer I would enjoy - a larger, reasonably priced especially for Bar Harbor. We ordered lunch, the fish and chips with coleslaw. I have started asking for the fries on the side as restaurants place the fish on top of the "chips" - fries here and then they are soggy. Not sure why all the restaurants do this but I am particular about my fries and the server was happy to place my request with the kitchen. The fish and chips arrived - huge pieces of fish cooked to perfection and a huge plate of fries, nice and crispy with a side of coleslaw! We enjoyed our meals and cannot wait to go back and try other items on the menu. The burgers coming out of the kitchen were generous and looked delicious. Blaze is a comfortable, casual restaurant (don't worry that you spent the day at the beach) that has great background music that allows for a conversation at your table. I consider the prices of the food and drink to be on par with other restaurants with similar offerings. The restaurant area and restrooms were clean and comfortable. My wife and I had a disappointing experience at Blaze. First, my wife's lobster dish was unavailable because the restaurant had no lobster (in Maine? Really?). Then, a few minutes after ordering the server returned to the table to tell me the item I'd ordered was no longer available for ordering - but the menu hadn't been updated to reflect this. Finally, when our meals arrived my food was barely warm, as if it had been cooked in advance, refrigerated, then not fully heated up before being served. My wife's meal was good. When my replacement food arrived it was very good, and I'd like to compliment our server - she was very apologetic, my meal was removed from the bill, and her patience with the restaurant errors during the meal was excellent. But we are unlikely to visit Blaze again in the future. read more

Trendy place in downtown Bangor. There was a group of us and we got a nice seat by the window. I ordered the Oak Grilled Duck Breast and it was deliciously tender and juicy. The potato hash was so petite and flavorful. They also have plenty of unique craft beer selections. But I had my all time favorite beer cider - Strongbow. A good friend and I came to Blaze to sample the tap takeover (Fogtown Brewing in Ellsworth). Our waitress was lovely. She checked in on us, but didn't pressure us to order food. (We just wanted to sample the drinks.) It was a little frustrating for a pint to be $7.50 and a flight to be almost $20. I knew the food was pricey, but I didn't think it translated to the beer prices. I was glad to get to sample a local Maine brew, but I wish the prices weren't so dramatic. read more

A friend and I went to Blaze (first time for me) on a bitterly cold Saturday night in February. There were only two of us, so we had to call 30 minutes ahead, which we did, and we were there at the time we had scheduled. When we arrived there was quite a line. We were told it would be about 15-20 minutes before we were seated. The time ticked by, and each time the door opened we froze, because a big crowd of us who were waiting had nowhere to go. About a half-hour went by, as we watched larger parties who came in after us (I'm assuming they had reservations..?) seated ahead of us. The hostess came to us and said it would be about 10-15 minutes more. You see where this is going. In about 15 minutes, we were told "you have a table, but it's not ready yet." We were finally seated about ten minutes after that. Frozen and hungry. They definitely need a better seating system. I must say, though, that the staff was friendly and appropriately sympathetic to the wait. In any case, once we were seated things went pretty quickly. Before I say anything else - if you are there on a cold day or night (and are seated in the main area near the bar), you will need something to warm you up. I had to use my coat as a blanket the entire time I was there, and my feet were still freezing. Glogg to the rescue! Heated mulled red wine served with sliced almonds and raisins was just what I needed. It didn't really warm me up comfortably, but who cares - it was wonderful to hold in my hands and felt great going down, as well as being delicious. My friend and I each ordered our own wild mushroom pizza; mine was gluten-free, hers was not. It was really delicious. I would have loved more spinach, but the sweet balsamic drizzle on the top took my mind off of that. We had plenty for breakfast and lunch the next day. Oh, yes I did. Because we took home most of the pizzas, we had room for dessert. It really wasn't the time of year for ice cream, but it was the only gf option and, what the heck. We ordered the peanut butter gelato - three scoops with whipped cream, and enough to share. WOW was it good! Huge chunks of peanut butter and really creamy chewy wonderful gelato texture. They don't make it on site (I had to ask), but they chose wisely. If I were to go back, I'd choose a time that wasn't so crowded, or so cold. But definitely worth going back. read more

Let me start by saying we have been visiting this restaurant for the past 6 or 7 years. Our earlier experiences were so fantastic, we knew we found our favorite eatery. Over time we have noticed a steady decline in food quality. Our most recent visit, last evening 12/13/19, for a birthday celebration, was likely the most disappointing one thus far. The service, food arrival, seating, drinks, were outstanding, however, 2 of the 4 meals received were mediocre and the birthday carrot cake my son ordered, was awful. Ironically, the 2 entrees (Hangar steak and Potato crusted Haddock) were the mediocre meals and higher priced than the other 2 ordered (burger and pizza). The hangar steak entree, although cooked as ordered, was lukewarm, the bed of vegetables was bland, under-salted and the plate was smudgy w/fingerprints. Not a clean plating by the chef! The haddock was dry, lukewarm and looked similar to a frozen breaded machine formed piece of fish rather than an actual filet placed on top of mashed potatoes. A mostly colorless, unappealing presentation. The purple sprouts were lovely, but that's where it ended. The Blaze burger w/duck fries was enjoyed as was the When Pigs Fly pizza. Also, the pork belly lollipops, as usual, were fantastic however, we usually get 6 and only received 5. We were disappointed the Tiramisu was removed from the menu as this was our 1st choice since it is our guest of honor's favorite. He ordered the carrot cake instead. I could tell it was not a high-quality cake in the least just by the look of it. The taste of it confirmed it and couldn't even be finished. I mentioned the disappointment of the cake to our waiter, he graciously apologized. We were still charged, albeit half price, for the lousy cake anyway. You may be wondering why we didn't address the issue of the entrees at the time. The reason was we didn't want to insert a negative situation into the celebration by complaining. So, my husband and I, who paid a little over $200 for this meal, and who happened to receive the most disappointing half of it, decided to just enjoy the company of our adult sons and the occasion. We are thinking Blaze may be best for the tavern type foods offered such as apps, burgers, panini's and pizzas rather than the pricier entrees and low-quality desserts. I sent this to the manager directly through their website giving them 3 days to respond hoping they would. They haven't as of yet. read more

Undecided about whether to give this restaurant three or four stars. I really wanted to give it four, however, the atmosphere was severely lacking, noisy and the acoustics and lighting upstairs were unenjoyable, during what we were hoping would be a fun and pleasurable weekend dinner in downtown Bangor. The food itself would have kicked it up into four star rating. We enjoyed the fish and chips and pork chops. Both were flavorful and somewhat unique. Fish and chips offering could have done better with one more piece of fish and fewer french fries. The room upstairs feels like an empty ski chalet. There is nothing to soften the acoustics, and the large table sitting behind us sounded noisy and intrusive into our own conversation, as a result. Plants, pictures, music and other accoutrements to a pleasurable dinner experience were sorely lacking. We couldn't wait to finish eating and get out of there. The LED bulb above our table was flickering and very distracting. Warmer, more convivial lighting would go a long way in creating a nicer experience. Our waitress, though very kind, didn't know much about the drinks or food menu and didn't have much to offer in response to some of our questions. I see this as a management issue, as she should have been better trained. She admitted that she isn't of legal drinking age and that was her excuse for not knowing much about the drinks menu. That's understandable, however, she's in a position whereby she should know at least what they have to offer. Again, she's not at fault; it's her training that was lacking. I would like to see this restaurant, make some improvements, and I think that they could draw more patrons, with some effort. Until then, it will not be our first choice, but we remain hopeful. read more

Placed call to Blaze at 4:30pm asking for a reservation for tonight at 6:30 for 5 people. I was told I could only make a reservation for 6 people. I asked to make it for 6 people. I was then told "we cannot do that tonight because we are short-staffed on Monday. But, if you call ahead at 5:45 you will be okay". Placed called at 5:45. The "manager on-duty" who initially denied being the manager, said she could not accommodate us at 6:30 because they already have reservations for that time. When I questioned why I was experiencing this she replied "we are not short-staffed, the manager would do the same thing". Three years ago while in Bangor from Texas I loved this restaurant and wanted to have my family experience it. Amazing eatery! Very diverse menu. The wood fired grill really enhances the flavor of the food. We ordered food to share and chose a bacon burger cooked a perfect medium. The burger was juicy, flavorful, and succulent. The fries were sooo delicious, perfectly crisp, hot and fresh. Cooked in duck fat that is beyond Yummy! We also ordered a BBQ chicken jalapeño and red onion pizza that was to die for. The crust crispy with the perfect chew. Toppings were on point. We started with their wood fired wings and they did not disappoint. They were some of the most tender wings I've had in a while and their size was not lacking either. Even better were the pizza options---the one we settled on was chorizo and a host of other flavorful goodies and it was seriously one of the best pizzas we've ever had. Luck of Blaze been following us around for months now. I mean every place we went to in past two months had something to relate to fire, flames & blaze - and they all been incredible adventures. Blaze in Bandor was no exception. Listen, we liked it so much, we came back again next day - it is impressive. Drinks menu is nicely done, there are definitely some gems there worth trying - Slainte was darn good! Now, to the food. Appetizers menu is one I wanted to try every single item on. Roasted bone marrow was yummy - rich, fatty goodness. Duck Fat Fries seemed disappear quickly between two of us - so, so, so good! My personal favorite, tho, goes to raw bar and their topped oysters. Now, this is work of art. Both Cali & New England toppings were incredible pairing. Those mustard seeds work so well with oysters! Wow. There are plenty of main entrees to choose from as well. Scallop tacos were perfect - very flavorful. Pizza - it was fun make your own and pick your own ingredients, just a way you like it. Went this afternoon for lunch. Waited quite a while just for the hostess to come back and seat us. Our waitress was nice but waited over a hour for our meals just for mine to come out first then another half hour for our second meal then at least another 20 mins for our third meal. Meanwhile the restaurant is just about empty with maybe a total of 10 tables with people seated who were all eating and arrived much later then us. The waitress kept apologizing for the extended wait and offered a discount which ended up only being half off two the the three meals. Not worth the $100 bill for a pizza, sandwich, and burger with one cocktail and a appetizer. And that was with the discount. Never will return. Not worth it. My family and I absolutely loved our meal from Blaze. The service was very good, outdoor seating was excellent, our food arrived in a timely manner and everything was excellent. The duck fat fried poutine was amazing. Never tried poutine, so I have no reference as to authenticity, but it tasted great. Very disappointing. We went here based on the 4 star rating...not at all what our experience was. The service, host excluded, was marginal and disinterested. They were out of the beer we wanted, no problem, but she did not then suggest others or show any interest in helping. The menu looked great! The food however was tasteless. I do not salt my food, but I salted this meal. The bun on the sandwich was flavorless and gummy, and there was no acidic bite from the coleslaw or what was supposed to be a lemon aoli...there was no flavor. Sadly, I left feeling unsatisfied. I knew calorically I had eaten a big meal, but was wanting something else after that disappointment. The service continued to be poor in terms of the time it took to pay. Will not return. read more
