    Nonna Maria Slice
    Jesse Y.

Can't believe one of the best pizzeria in NY is in Roosevelt Mall. Aside from the city location's vibe, this pizza is identical without having to venture into Manhattan. All the slices are top notch made with fresh ingredients however their famous"Nonna Maria" slice is still king. Super quick service and all slices are very reasonably priced.

After more than forty pilgrimages to Grimaldi's, the baseline truth remains unshakeable: that…read moreblistered, black-spotted crust is a direct line back to the old country. The strategy here is simple. You order a pie--half pepperoni, half prosciutto. The prosciutto does exactly what it needs to do, but the pepperoni is the real headline act. It curls, it crisps, and it pools just enough oil to marry perfectly with a crust that achieves that rare, holy grail combination of thin, crispy, and subtly chewy. Dozens of pies later, it's still a ritual worth repeating. Food (4/5): The thin, crispy crust is the star of the show, and the pepperoni is dialed in to perfection every single time. Customer Service (4.25/5): Sharp and efficient. Decor (3.5/5): Unpretentious and classic. It carries that timeless, red-and-white checked tablecloth energy that focuses your attention exactly where it belongs: on the pie. Price: Around $17.50 per person. For a wonderful, sit-down brick oven pizza experience, it remains an absolute steal.

There's also "one hour parking" in the front on the street but I didn't see any meters so I'm not sure how they're enforcing the one hour so I just parked in the back lot to be safe. The restaurant has indoor seating as well as outdoor seating both in the front (3 tables) and back. Separate men and women single bathrooms were in the back as well. My friends and I opted to sit inside with the air conditioning because outside seating was still a bit toasty due to the weather that day. We met up around 12:30PM and the restaurant was pretty empty at that time. I ordered their Lunch Special which was a 12 inch personal pie with a 16 Oz soda ($15.60). I got a sweetened iced tea instead of the soda. I wanted a topping (mushroom) so that was an additional $5. The iced tea was wayyy too sweet for my taste and the pizza wasn't that great either. Too much crust, not enough sauce and barely any mushroom topping. The 12 inch size though was filling and I didn't have any leftover. Due to the restaurant being pretty empty the time we were there, it was nice to be able to chat with my friends and we weren't rushed. I'm not sure if I would return as the food did not stand out at all.

It was loaded with onions, but it was missing the umami flavor that would have made it taste robust. Perhaps an infusion of white truffle oil would have done the trick. I also ordered a Zeppole, which was dry inside. I did not like it. I like mine moist and recently baked. Mine tasted like it had been sitting on the counter for hours. Milton took my order, and he seemed friendly. The interior was reasonably clean, so I ate inside. I am so turned off by what I had that I might not give this place another try.

My cousin and I went inside and were greeted by a nice fellow behind the counter who patiently explained the difference between Grandma pizza and Sicilian pizza to her. The pizza looked really good. It was. The Grandma was very good, and crispy. The spinach pizza was so full of cheese and spinach, I couldn't even finish it, because I had already finished the other two slices... one of which was the best... an olive slice from a small pie that had a few whole (pitted) green olives and a little roasted red pepper on it. The slice had the distinct flavor of olive even when you weren't biting into one of the olives. LOVED IT. We say at a high-top table, enjoyed the atmosphere there and I had no complaints. Should I find myself back in the area looking for a decent pizza meal, this will be the spot.

On Pi Day celebrated annually on March 14, I ordered from Toskana Pizzeria Restaurant directly through the website: http://www.ToskanaPizzaToGo.com/. The system was very easy to use. I ordered Mozzarella Sticks (6) for $11.95, Country Style Greek Salad (small) for $14.95, and the 14" Toskana Special Pizza for $24.95. There is a credit card processing fee. The mozzarella sticks were crispy and the marinara sauce was very good. I enjoyed the Country Style Greek Salad. The 14" Toskana Special Pizza had mushrooms, peppers, onions, pepperoni, and sausage. It had very good flavor and fresh ingredients. They also included a complimentary bag of bread which was nice and warm. Toskana Pizzeria Restaurant is my new to go to for an Italian meal.

Some of my favorite slices are the mushroom, meatball slice, and they do seasonal veggie slices that are great. Their dough is chewy and crispy while not being too heavy or oily feeling. I really like that they have a flavor for everyone, no matter what you're feeling! My only gripe is with their sandwiches. They look a lot better than they actually taste. They're a huge portion that makes the price tag fair (which is really hard to find lately). It looks super flavorful but it really doesn't taste like much. Their focaccia bread is good, but the homemade semolina for the meatball parm was disappointing.. it was mushy and dense. Overall, I would stick to their pizzas because they clearly do it well.

Sorry I won't sound that way in this review. I don't jump on YELP to review right away unless something's really got me irritated and fed-up. The Ambiance is basic pizza place IMHO.. Plenty of tables and space. I've eaten pizza and pasta dishes for at least 65 of my 70+ years on this earth and worked in a pizza place during the late 70s-early 80's and I KNOW my pizza AND pasta, especially the sauce. Today's baked ziti and baked stuffed shells was literally out of this world, meaning it tasted like it came from an alien, possibly one of those we've been hearing about on the MSM news. It Was HORRIBLE! No, I don't have pictures because I do NOT have a cell phone or a cam. My wife does but she is not home today. Trust me, I do NOT knock pizza places unless it is well deserved, like this place. This was the 3rd time I've tried this place. The 1st time I ordered the same as today. It was delicious. The 2nd time I ordered a round cheeses pie which was a bit too well done for me, so not satisfied. The very 1st time I had just a slice or 2 and was very satisfied, which is why I went back. Today, I'm sorry I decided to stop there. It's a total waste of $27 as I can't even eat this. It looks and tasted like leftover food from last night. The stuffed shells were way overcooked. So soft that when I attempted to transfer to a big bowl, they fell apart. Too soft and the "ricotta" was not creamy or melted. It looked like ricotta does when it's gone bad. I was afraid to eat it, THAT'S how bad it looked. I did TRY it along with the baked ziti, but not good at all. So, you might wonder how the baked ziti was? HA! NOT GOOD AT ALL! The ziti tasted as it looked. Overcooked. Some brown "burn" spots on the mozz, (very little cheese) and the same "expired looking" ricotta. I tried a couple fork fulls but it tasted burnt to me. well done, burnt and dry. Sorry guys but this was horrible and unacceptable. This was to be for my wife and me tonight. Now I'll just make my own, which I'm quite capable of and KNOW it will be edible and much much better than the garbage I was given today. I would call but the convo would not be pretty since I'm in a rotten mood, so I am just writing it here. I won't waste my time or gas in bringing it back. This place is NOT around the corner. I was just passing by again so I figured I'd get some hot food. I should've stuck with the pizza. I mean really; how do you screw up baked ziti and shells? There's 3 ingredients plus the pasta. The Ricotta HAD to be bad to begin with and then the overcooking it compounded it - or vice-versa. I hate throwing away food but this is going in the garbage AFTER I get my wife to take a couple pics. Both meals are in a big bowl, mixed together since the shells fell apart and I THOUGHT maybe the ziti could be salvaged using some of the sauce from the shells but even then, it tasted horrible. Obviously, Enzo's is off my fav. places to eat pizza/pasta list. It does take the #1 worst ziti and shells spot though. So bad I wouldn't even want another order if offered. I'll take the loss. It's not the first time I've wasted cash. Live and learn. Calda, Positano's, Sbarro's, Gino's and a couple other places nearer to me have yet to disappoint, so I'll stay with them. So now, having just wasted $27 and annoyed at that thoughh it could've been worse, I'm going to drink my blues away with a beer or 3 and then I'll feel better - or fall asleep in front of the TV. If my wife takes a picture and we can figured out how the heck to upload it from her phone, I'll do that as soon as possible. EDIT: The bread given with the meal was also hard and cold as if ( again ) it was leftover from yesterday or even before then. But from what I recall about the bread, it looks a lot better than it tastes. I'll be throwing that out too.
