I'm shocked I have never heard of this place! Absolutely INCREDIBLE meal. Farm to table? Supporting local? On the river? YES! YES! YES! The charcuterie board was to die for, maple bourbon goat cheese, was delicious with the salty meats. My filet was cooked to perfection and the garlicky seasonal veggies were out of this world. I was given a gift card to the Bleuroot and was excited to try out this restaurant. My partner and I arrived at dinner time. I was surprised to see the inside so plain and cold feeling. No accent lights or decorations, just a lot of tall plain walls. The items on the menu were very expensive, but since we had the gift card, we thought we'd indulge in a nice meal. Our server was polite, helpful and prompt in the beginning. I ordered a margarita and it came in an ice tea glass with 3/4 ice. For the price of it, I was disappointed it was so plain Jane and watered down. When it came time to order, I specifically asked for no pink to be seen on my prime rib. It arrived with a light pink throughout the entire serving. I didn't complain when she asked how our meal was. I simply asked for a take home container. I ate none of the prime rib. The potatoes were heavily over spiced. I could only take but a couple bites. Very disappointing. I thought I'd order dessert to pick my spirit up, but when the banana foster came, it looked like over ripe bananas in a bowl of liquid. They were slimy. I couldn't finish that either. The hefty bill came; for 2 entrees, 2 drinks and 2 desserts, it was $145. Wow!! At this point, our waitress Sarah never came back. She avoided us or any eye contact, so we had to take care of the bill at the bar. I stopped to use the restroom before heading home and half way down the stairs, there was an awful stench. Once I opened the door to the bathroom, the smell was overpowering. It smelled like backed up sewage. So, needless to say our first visit to Bleuroot was not a good one. My advice to you is save your money and find a less expensive restaurant with a cozy aura to it. read more

I was eyeing the short rib poutine and ravioli and was sad that they were out. They had a lot of specials that looked delicious like arancini. I started with corn and poblano soup. It was pretty good but needed a little more seasoning. For dinner I had the Mac n cheese with bbq pork. It was pretty good! The portion was gigantic. I appreciated having leftovers. Love the idea of farm to table and fresh seasonal food! We had hoped to sit outdoors but it was too chilly. We were seated upstairs with a view of the river. It really is beautiful if you can sit outside. Fresh flowers on the table were a nice touch. My husband and both enjoyed steak salad the last time we were there, so we both ordered that and my husband ordered an iced tea. When our salads came, we were a little surprised the steak was cold. I could have sworn it was heated the last time I had it. I asked for a sharp knife so I could cut it. I did not remember the steak being so tough. The greens were delicious and are some of the best I've had. The veggies were good and the toasted garbanzo beans melted in my mouth. The size of the salad was ample served in a cool bowl with a deep well. The balsamic vinegar was delicious. Service was average at best and they were not busy. I did not enjoy the salad as much as I did the last time, but it was still delicious and the ingredients tasted fresh. When I got home I rechecked the menu which is a Grilled Steak Salad. So why it was not heated I can't say, but if that is what it is called, it seems like the steak should be warm, or the person should be asked if they want it cold. Not sure how the steak can be medium and than be cold. The iced tea my husband had was delicious. There is such a great ambiance at this restaurant, I would like to see a little more attention to detail and service but would still try this place again, because it is a beautiful space and I love the concept. read more

Came in for an early dinner Friday night. We walked in (no reservation), were seated right away and were one of the first tables in the place. After we were seated, the place started to fill in for the night. The server was insanely slow and uninformed. I have a dietary restriction to gluten and want to feel safe eating at restaurants. He didn't seem to have any awareness of gluten and how dangerous it can be for some people. So that was disappointing and nerve wracking. Ordered food right away, took 20+ minutes to come out. I got the vegan burger with a gluten free bun and fries. My husband got the steak salad. The gf bun certainly looked unappealing, but it was actually amazing. The whole burger and fry plate was amazing actually. Very pleased with that meal. Now the salad, that's a different story. It was absolutely drenched in vinegar making it so tart and inedible. My husband eat the steak off the top and that was pretty much it. He felt horrible leaving all that food on his plate, but it was ruined. And of course he was left hungry. Overall, feels like this place is trying to be something it's not. We won't be back. read more

We loved this place when they used to have brunch on the river. Tried their dinner. The short rib poutine is top tier, like nearing Montreal level, which is refreshing for the area. My actual entree was a little underwhelming, the vodka arrabiata, but could I simply have poorly selected. Classy cocktail menu and drink selection. Though disappointed by the entrees the poutine made the trip worth it to us. Perhaps only a place for small plates if we choose to come back. What I'd love to see this place do is keep doubling down on their small plates selection, maybe get a couple more "flagship" items in the same stream of thought to the poutine, like an elevated cheese curds or Pao de queijo variation, and potentially trim down less popular entrees. Overall solid service and solid ambiance/location. This place has oodles of potential if they keep working on their menu! read more

The feeling of the room is a romantic Irish pub with the movie Dodgeball playing in the background on the four TVs along the bar. I'm celebrating getting my taste back after having Covid, luckily loosing my ability to taste only lasted a couple of days. It was a cold winter night, and the beef stroganoff sounded like just the right remedy. Its warmth spread throughout my body and the added sour cream on top sent it over the edge to extraordinary. Our cool as hell waiter, Simon, suggested the Pistachio Almond Cream or the Lemon Blueberry Crumble Cheesecake for dessert. Tried this for the first time a week or so ago. Nice place, large bar and dining area. Service was good. The Prime Rib sandwich was the 'special' that day. It seems like restaurants are trying to pass off a basic beef sandwich as prime rib. The bun tasted like a store bought bun. Apologies if this was baked in house. Plus they put the sandwich in a pool of au jus, so it just fell apart when I picked it up. The other sandwich we ordered was a the hot honey chicken. Nothing special here either. There were less than 12 people in the restaurant at the time. And two sandwiches took a solid 30 minutes to come out. Not sure what the experience is for folks when the place is crowded. read more

First time I ordered the sweet pea toast vegan (which is explicitly stated as an option) it had feta; I decided to try it again figuring it was a one time mistake but it happened again. Food and service were excellent! We had a reservation for 12 for a rehearsal dinner and we were so glad we chose Blueroot! Simon was our waiter and he took fantastic care of us! We had flatbread caprese, lamb lolipops and crabcakes for our appetizers. I had the house salad, chicken pesto, ravioli, and my daughter had grilled cheese with a side of mac & cheese. We ate it all! My husband couldn't make it to dinner and we got him the beef tenderloin to go and he ate it all as well! I had a couple of watermelon cocktails and they were delicious! We had a birthday to celebrate and they brought out a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. We absolutely love that local small businesses provide the food for this establishment! Average food and don't let them seat you upstairs! This is the second time I've been here and the food is just okay. I had the arancini appetizer which was good and the short rib ravioli that was okay. The service was great and the downstairs room is nice. However, my group was put upstairs with a large party nearby that was so loud that my group could hardly hear each other. That larger party should've had that whole upstairs area to themselves since that room wasn't big to begin with. I felt bad for the party of 4 sitting there too. read more

My friend was excited to take me here for a nice friend date because the patio sits above the river and it is really lovely. Which might be why I had an easier time with the at least 10 minutes it took for a server to come to our table. We ordered right away and everything else was pretty smooth from there on out. I ordered 2 house Sav Blancs and the pasta Fresca with shrimp (it was fine). I vaguely noticed the shrimp seemed not as fresh as I'm used to (what? I like shrimp). Then the bill came and there was a discrepancy between what was on the menu and what we were charged. But overall, it was an all nice experience, which mostly had to do with the company. 3 Stars. Today around 11am I became very suddenly ill: there was a sharp pain in my upper abdomen and I ended up vomiting about 6 times in as many hours. I couldn't keep a lot of water down. I looked up the symptoms to stomach flu and assumed it was that. Long story long, it's been 11 hours since I first felt sick and I am eating and drinking again, so nope, it was food poisoning. Was hoping for more from our first visit to Bleuroot. We were seated in what I'm assuming is the main dining room (about six or so stairs up from the entrance), and the room was pretty boring with not much going on. The main floor, maybe what they consider the bar area, seemed much cooler with better ambiance. So if we come back I would want to sit down there. Our server must have been brand new, for a few things we ordered she had to look at the menu to confirm what it came with. I understand every restaurant is going to have new employees, but maybe make sure they know the menu completely before they start? Service was also very slow. I will say, the food was pretty good. The cauliflower app and caprese flatbread were the best things we ate, but the salmon dish was also very good. The above average food might have us coming back, but I'll still be worried about the slow service and potential lack of knowledge from the servers. read more

Everything was very under seasoned, regular fries, sweet potato fries, and the panko mushrooms were all bland. Poor, slow service. They delivered a gluten filled dish to a celiac patron who specifically ordered gf. Only when the person questioned whether the dish was gf did they admit that it was not. 1/2 hour later, they delivered the correct dish but only after the other three in the party had finished eating and the plates had already been cleared. This little gem is adjacent to the river visible from the upstairs balcony. We at first were seated at the far end of the balcony next to the railing, which allowed for a nice view of the river. However, we quickly realized that the smell of the garbage dumpster outside on the lower level would be overwhelming so we changed tables to the other end. We chose the special for that day which was an excellent price, and provided a glass of wine, a choice of 3 entrees, and dessert. Some will say the service might be a little slow but consider they are running up and down a flight of stairs to the upper level (actually a delightful pace for the type of restaurant). Busy Friday night at BluRoot. Good atmosphere and live music. Drinks and Crab appetizer and Chicken Wing appetizer was excellent. Main entry was a Beef Filet sandwich with good flavor and cooked to medium correctly, but it arrived very luke warm with the brioche buns that were quite chilly. Fries were also a disappointment as they were dry and quite cool. I was told that this dish is served at room temp (which I am skeptical, do you really want filet minion to resemble left on the counter next day leftovers). Can't say I am impressed and won't be ordering this again. I usually have really excellent meals here, and I am wondering if it's due to the busy evening that this meal was less than impressive. A cute little gem in downtown Dundee. Gentle jazz, calming river views, and patio lights made for a relaxing experience. Our server, Kim, was an absolute dream and so kind and attentive to our needs! The Homemade Vegan Burger was very tasty! Bean-based and very hearty in size with a fresh, fluffy bun and crisp lettuce and tomato. Additional toppings like red onion or a vegan aioli/house sauce would have been nice to see, as it was a tiny bit dry from the millet and grains. The sweet potato fries were immaculate--I devoured these! My friend also ordered the Not Your Mom's Mac & Cheese and said it was tasty but nothing amazing. Found this little treasure while on a bike ride and was pleasantly surprised to find a place that truly has many healthy options. My favorite restaurant in the suburbs. Amazing food, services is always fantastic, the drinks are well made too! Chef Maria is the best and will come around asking each table if they are enjoying their meal. Kevin, the bartender makes the best smoked old fashions. The ambiance is perfect- inside and out! They have a big patio space during summer months that's right along the river. You can also have events there on the second and third floor. We continue to use this space for special occasions and events. Space is beautiful. You can't go wrong with spending an evening at Bleuroot. read more

This was our first visit and we hope to return often. The staff greet you warmly as you pass through the restaurant on your way to the totally groovy patio. A nice mix of shade with some sunny areas. They have made great use of the space they have. Our servers were so prompt and knowledgable, friendly and efficient. Beautiful restaurant and bar. My friend and I met for lunch on Saturday. We were greeted and seated right away. We had good service from the bartender. The mushroom soup with Brie was amazing. Lots of fresh mushrooms with chunks of Brie in a creamy sauce. I also got the portobello mushroom fries. Hand breaded with herbs sprinkled on top with a yummy dipping sauce. Really good! When you hear about farm to table cuisine, you automatically think fresh and vibrant flavors. I have to say, this place really misses the mark on many aspects. When we arrived we were taken upstairs to a smaller dining room. After about a minute up there, we realized this was not the area of the restaurant we wanted to be, as it had absolutely no ambiance. We quickly asked to be moved to the bar area that seemed much more lively. The decor of the place seems to be missing a lot in my opinion. Not quite sure the look they are going for, but it really does need some improvement. The food itself was good, but not great. And it nowhere justified the prices. For an appetizer we had the spicy shrimp and grits. At this price point, the shrimp should have been bigger. It also came out only lukewarm and we both thought the dish was on the blander side. The short rib ravioli and adult Mac and cheese were both just alright. There was no wow moment, and like I said earlier, prices seemed high for what you got. The lack of ambiance and just alright food, won't be getting us back here sadly. read more

First, I have yet to eat here. I HAVE tried a few times but there were always some sort of problem. At this point too many red flags and too many indications its not going to be a good experience. Today, it went like this, called at 7:45pm as there doesn't appear to be online reservations. Website "says" they are open to 10pm. (here says 9pm) Asked if I could get a reservation at 8:15pm. Answer... I'll try. No, we close our kitchen at 8:30pm. WHAT?! * Even if that was true, I would expect to be able to come in at 8:15 * Update your hours of operation listings so I don't waste my time. * For a restaurant, your kitchen should at least be open during that time; example, if open to 9:00PM I would expect to be able to come in at 8:45 PM. * I suggest getting on the online reservations program; especially if you have these early hours and the next point. * Work on your customer facing... I had to call in. The interaction was not that of a highly trained staff. I was left feeling that you don't care at all about your customers. This point is not about the person I spoke with as this was clearly a management/training/operational issue. Choice of words are everything and showing some empathy go a long way especially when you are unable to accommodate requests typical for the business you are in. read more
