Excellent spot for a true restaurant meal. They have lunch and dinner and a very nice bar area. It was an open roomy restaurant with several larger rooms and comfortable looking tables and seats. All natural wood with a Barvarian lodge type feel. It reminded me of the family style places we would go as kids with the folks for a big night out. When we walked in the place was comfortably full with many large parties and couples seated around the restaurant. Pretty impressive for a Wednesday early evening. Even the bar had a nice crowd. Outside there is a very nice sized patio for dining right on the Fox River. We sat at a nice large table next to a window looking over the Fox River. They start you off with a basket of fresh buttered popcorn. A nice start. I really don't think there is a bad table in the house the way they have it set up. The ambiance is excellent, homey, warm, and welcoming. I can see this place being a total holiday scene. The menu has all the traditional American fare and a page dedicated to authentic Greek fare. Cuisine only true Greek restaurant would serve. They also had an excellent separate Octoberfest menu with all the traditional German fare. A great choice for a chilly fall evening. Several parties had pizza on the table which honestly looked excellent. I imagine it's a bit a a neighborhood spot for the kids too. Our server Lily knew her stuff, and seamlessly guided us through our ordering. She explained all the items we asked about and seemed to really enjoy being there. Lily knew it was a Greek owned restaurant which for me is a huge UPS! I'm not Greek but having been in the industry myself for some years I know the quality and high expectations of any Greek owned restaurant. We started with a bowl of French Onion soup and Cream of Chicken soup. Both truly excellent and the real deal. Two Iced teas that came in what seemed to be some cool repurposed jelly jars. Excellent touch in the comfy factor. We split and Octoberfest meal of german sausage combo with red cabbage and sour kraut and potato pancakes. It was a great choice and a truly authentic plate of three different sausages all cooked to perfection. Complete with sour cream and applesauce. I was pleasantly surprised, having seen the average review rating. I found it a nice atmosphere with natural wood and stone walls - like something out of the Medieval era. Even a fireplace. Our server was very respectful and encouraging. The Greek side adds a nice touch. We had spinach pie, for example. Besides standard fare sandwiches, there were gyros and vegetarian options. There was both inside and outside seating when we went. Prices are lowish for the amount of food you get. This place has been in the community for a long time. Newly renovated interior and it looks nice. We stopped in for a quick bite to eat. We find ourselves here every now and then for the quick bite. They have daily soup specials which I love. More importantly they have spanakopita (a light and fluffy pastry filled with spinach and cheese). We came here for "Grinch's Grotto" with our kids - the host tried to seat us in a non-decorated spot next to the kitchen and the door. We had to ask to go where it was decorated like the Grinch, mind you, there were TONS of tables open. We were seated and the waitress seemed irritated from the second we sat down. The place was filled with older, grumpy towneys who seemed disgusted with any families that entered. Food was good, the decor was okay and the drinks were overpriced. Additionally, they charge you a 3% credit card fee. My advice is don't advertise as a family friendly Christmas decor restaurant if you don't want families to come. read more

First off - it was our first time here. Loved the look, and it was right on the Fox River. Beautiful spring day. The ambience? He was charged for a full bowl of soup and not the 99 cent sub fee! The manager had to fix it up for us (to be fair, she did so, but the waiter had to be asked to get her - a bad sign). We had been here on their patio in the summer but this was our first time dining in. The fireplace, fresh popcorn and holiday decorations as well as live entertainment was just the cozy spot we were looking for to catch up with friends. Our server Monika was friendly and attentive and didn't mind that we were in no hurry. Our food came out hot and just as ordered. One complaint would be the Makers Old Fashioned our friend ordered. Never a big fan of this local chain, but their patio is quite nice, so we figured we would give it a shot. The most mediocre overpriced meal in the area. I ordered a Greek salad. Normally entree salads are large, this was medium at best. The 'Greek' dressing was thick and weird (not homemade). There was probably 2 tablespoons of CRUMBLED feta?! The rest of the salad was just run of the mill. Not even close to being worth $13.99. My husband got the Gyros 'platter' for $16.99 which was comical. One open faced pita with minimal meat (less than most sandwiches from fast food places) it was not spit cooked, probably warmed up on a griddle. Token amount of fries on the side. The only positives were the popcorn, the patio atmosphere (inside was dingy and claustrophobic), the drinks were fine and our server was nice and attentive. After a long day of packing and moving my boyfriend and I thought about ordering in, but instead I decided to call around to see if anyones kitchen was still open. The village squire in Dundee said their kitchen was open until 9:30. We arrived at 8:45 and were welcomed with grace. Once we sat down our server Sara was more than friendly and accommodating. Being in the service industry myself I know how the late night tables can be a drag but she was full of energy and gave us the best service I've had n a very long time. This place gives me a warm, nostalgic feeling anytime I walk in (generally once every few years). I lived in West Dundee for the first few years of my life, and this place has not changed at all since then as far as I can tell. Every time I walk in it is exactly as I remember. The food is nothing amazing. Instead of bread, they give you popcorn, which I think is a nice difference since most of the entrees involve bread. I'm personally not a popcorn fan, but I like the concept. The food here in general is nothing to write home about. We got the saganaki, which is good but not great. I got the veggie panini as my entree. I'm not sure if there was actually hummus on it, though on the menu it says that it includes hummus. It was overall quite forgettable. My girlfriend got the veggie burger, which the menu described as a garden burger. It is not, in fact, a garden burger, but a black bean burger. She said she liked it, though, which is saying something because she usually doesn't like black bean burgers. The service was the best thing about the place. Our server was super friendly and efficient. To be fair, we came for lunch and there were few other patrons in the restaurant, but I still think she did a great job. read more

Really don't want to knock a place especially in these kind of times with all these shutdowns...etc. Ordered food for pickup. Requeated it to be ready at 5:15 as we were out and about and would be there by then. We arrived just after 5:15 and it wasn't ready yet. It is now 5:44 and it still isn't ready. We had our staff Christmas party here this past Saturday in their private dining room. It was PERFECT...decorated with holiday sparkle and piped-in holiday music. Amber was our lead server and she was FANTASTIC! We decided to do a Buffett with pizzas, Italian beef sandwiches, pasta, garlic bread, Cesar salad and ice cream. Drinks were by request. We've been wanting to try this place out for a long time, and now that we tried it we're probably not going back. There was absolutely no flavor in anything we ordered. I went with my family and all 4 of us ordered something different and nobody's food was good. I got a salad, somehow my salad tasted so bland, it actually tasted like water somehow. My husband got the brisket Mac, it's way overpriced for what it is. It tasted like a tv dinner that you pop into the microwave. I have been going to this location since I was a kid and have always loved the food and ambiance. It has been a while since I've been to this location (we typically go to the one in South Elgin since it's closer to where we now live) and it is completely different. Walking in to a nearly empty restaurant on a Saturday night at 7:30 should have been my first indication to leave. Employees were sitting on the stage where the musician normally plays looking at their phones. They have painted the wood walls and put signs up all over to not mark on the walls (that was always a "thing" when you were there). They have atrociously cheap looking red vinyl booth seats and bright LED lighting. The food was not good at all. I ordered a burger. It was not seasoned, dry and it was for sure not fresh. I'm guessing it was a frozen patty. The bun was dry. The fries were not hand-cut or homemade. My daughter had chicken tenders and she said they were "gross". The waitress seemed confused as to whether or not we were in her section and had three different people come to take our order and bring our drinks. I am shocked how different the West Dundee location is than the South Elgin location. The South Elgin location is so much better. read more

Found a nice table outside on a hot day after walking around town and the waitress brought us our menus and water. We picked out what we wanted to eat and drink and were just about to order when another waitress comes out and says " you can't have dogs out here!". Apparently there was a sign, but we hadn't come in that way. We have two mini dachshunds, they were laying in the shade totally out of the way. Sporting an English pub decor, the Village Squire is a mini chain with four locations in the W / NW Suburbs of Chicago. They've been around since 1958. It's casual dining, with an extensive menu as well as daily specials. Special kid's menu has more options than you're used to seeing at fast casual restaurants. The menu includes quite a few small plates that you could share (but you don't have to!), burgers, sandwiches, salads, pizza, steak, chicken, fish, and pastas. We happened to land on Tuesday, which is half-price burger day, any burger on the menu, and there are a lot of combinations to choose from. They start with a half pound of beef, served with pickle, lettuce, tomato and any other toppings you choose, with side options including steak fries, house made chips, cottage cheese, cole slaw, rice, baked potato, sweet potato fries, rings, fruit, or soup. (the last four require a slight up charge, but less than you're used to seeing!). I zeroed in on the bacon/bleu burgers with rings. Superb. Tasty meat patty, good grind, substantial bun. Full bar, occasional live music, sports tvs, video gaming, nooks and crannies for tables. And like most places, the thing that made the experience was the deft handling by server Jackie F. She was not only affable and menu knowledgeable, she asked questions above and beyond standard service expectations. A simple example, we asked for glasses of water, and she asked if we'd like lemons with it. YES! So she brought a small dish. And like that. So, two burgers, sides, drinks, $14. I'll be back. Often. I am sorry to write this review as my friends and I have been long time patrons and we remember the "good ole days" when it was "the" place to go and be seen. Back when George and then Paul (brothers) ran the place, you could always count on good home made food and a great drink. The atmosphere was warming and eclectic and fun. My father even helped the Karas brothers design the interior and furnish the kitchen and bar equipment. Now I'm assuming it's being run by one of the nephews or kids and it has slipped terribly. The food seems all out of a box and reheated. Burgers are bland and the help seems to accept the restaurants demise. The help congregate around the table where the food pickups are and kibitz. No manager seems to be present. We complained about the food and the server took the food off of the bill which was nice and she was personable but we never saw a manager appear. Theres no pride of ownership any longer. Very sad since we have been going there since the 70's. Rumor has it that they are going to make it a Rookies which is one of the families other chains. There are a few Village Squires, but the one in West Dundee on The Fox River is the coolest. It's a great place to go on a cold night because there are fireplaces warming the restaurant.
