The service here was good. Moderately nice dining area, though with nothing to break up the sound, even a 50% full room was excessively loud. However, the food was overpriced and edible at best. We ordered mixed dumplings and crab Rangoon appetizers. They were stolid but with small portions for the price. My daughter ordered shrimp with a nut sauce. When she broke through one of the overly breaded shrimp, she discovered that it hadn't even been de-veined. $28 bucks for 6 shrimp and some raw broccoli, someone is laughing all the way to the bank. My wife's chicken fried rice was a pale pile of rice with raw onions and a couple of desultory pieces of pale chicken. It had little to no flavor and there wasn't even soy sauce on the table to rescue it. I ordered the pork ribeye. Supposedly it had some sort of spice rub. The best I can say is that it had nice grill marks. It was sitting on a couple of raw pieces of bok-Choi and the small bowl of rice had more flavor than it. All in all, it was the most expensive, least flavorful, most underwhelming Chinese meal I have experienced since moving to Jacksonville. read more

Visited Blue Bamboo today for lunch for the first time in a very long time. The interior is completely remodeled and beautiful. It is modern and very open. They have a full bar, how great for a nice night out? Ok first things first, if you follow food events on IG you will recognize Chef Dennis as he is very involved in the community. We arrived right as they were opening and he was up front working. We introduced ourselves and enjoyed a few minutes of his time discussing the menu and restaraunt design. He was extremely pleasant and clearly loves what he does. We had no idea the restaurant had been open for over 12 years! Now to the food, we ordered the BBQ duck wonton and it was wonderful. Nicely spiced and surprisingly easy to pick up and eat (we were provided this tip from Holly our lovely server). Next I ordered the chicken katsu sandwich, which felt weird but Chef Dennis said it was very popular. Well he was right, of course, it was perfectly crunchy and huge. I requested the wasabi aioli, for the sandwich and fries, because it was so amazing. My husband ordered the sechzwan beef. He loved it! Huge portion, could have easily made two meals. My friend and I went here for lunch. This is the first time I've been to their new venue -- absolutely beautiful! There are rooms for private events that can be adjusted to accommodate various numbers of groups -- can't wait 'til Covid is over! Our waitress was very attentive. I had hot & sour soup (the broth was a bit too fatty for me, though my husband would have loved it!) and shared the classic lo mein (great noodles!) and crispy shrimp. Maybe it was our mistake for not ordering more unique meals with flare. But for example the dragon whiskers (fried zucchini strings)- was $10.50. Really? It was yummy, but a pile of batter with the faintest hint of zucchini should not be that expensive. I also strongly disliked my meal- I got the pan fried japanese noodles with bok choy, straw mushrooms, and shrimp. This dish was SWIMMING in sauce. Yuck. The shrimp were barely cooked. The soft verses crunchy noodles were good. But this dish was over $20- so not worth it. My friend got the shrimp fried rice, which was forgettable food court quality. My other friends got the crab rangoon, chicken and broccoli, and a chicken rice veggie dish. All underwhelming. Apparently their menu changes often- none of the online menus are the current one. As a pescatarian I like to look at the menu ahead of time and plan what I will eat, but yesterday my choices weren't even on the menu. First time visiting this "Asian" restaurant. Spacious interior, friendly. Service was unremarkable--it was a little difficult to find our waitress for a second round of drinks. Cocktails were pretty standard but beware, you will be charged $13.00 for a whiskey or vodka and an additional $3.00 to make each one into a cocktail. I've never encountered that before. My red curry chicken had no heat as Asian food usually does. I think the spring roll was from Costco. Also, I had to ask for chop sticks to eat my Asian food in this Asian restaurant. I had the pleasure of a private dining experience at Blue Bamboo with Chef, Dennis Chan. If you're like me and love being catered to, you'd love this experience. Chef Chan set out to cook this for us that I isn't on the everyday menu. Most notable was the Thai Pok Wings. I've never had them before from anywhere else, but I could imagine his are some of the best in town. Everyone was served his national award-winning orange cream cake and let me say, this dessert is well worth the drive from anywhere around town to enjoy. I've been curious about this restaurant, and what "hip Asian food" might mean, for a while now. When errands led me nearby tonight, I leapt at the chance to stop in. The inside is much different than I expected, in a good way. Instead of the standard Asian/Chinese themes, you have a clean, modern look. I started off with the Blue Ginger cocktail, which was REALLY good! Be careful with this one, as the alcohol isn't noticeable at all. I almost ordered a second one when I realized that a mild buzz had snuck in. If I wasn't traveling solo tonight... For appetizer, I opted for the Yelp recommended Dragon Whiskers, a take on fried zucchini. These are absolutely magical when they arrive! They are full of flavor, even without the dipping sauce, but so light (almost airy) they don't fill you up in advance of the entree. Devour these when they are warm. I found that when they cool, like Cinderella's carriage, they return to a more squash-like state. For the entree, I ordered the Half Canton roast duck, which was almost tender enough to cut with a fork, and complemented with a light tangy sauce. The dressing on the side green salad was tangy and complimentary to the duck. Portion size was perfect. The service tonight was great also. First off, Holly answered my many questions with patience and grace. She even took the extra time to bring by both the bottle of ginger liqueur when I inquired about it, as well as allow me to peruse the cookbook. I'll start with what's best about Blue Bamboo. Everyone was very nice and attentive. We had an excellent waitress and the chef stopped by and checked in. He seemed like a kind, happy person. The space was clean and modern (if that's your thing) and certainly comfortable and not too loud. Now the less than good parts. The dish I ordered, a fried noodle dish with bok choy, scallions, and carrots plus a protein of your choice, was exceptionally bland--both lacking flavor and spice (even though I specially requested very spicy). The waitress was kind enough to check in about what I thought and even brought me some sriracha and what was likely Huy Fong chili paste to make up for it. I really do appreciate the thought; that was great service. But if I'm paying $21.50 for a noodle dish, I expect better ingredients and flavor than whatever I can pick up at Publix. An excellent noodle dish of this same ingredient list costs about $11 in a good restaurant. The one feature of the dish that was enjoyable was that some of the noodles had been wok-seared and had a bit of crispiness to them that added an appealing texture. So overall, my experience was the food was not worth returning for. Even if it were half the price I would not order it again. And I will point out, the entire menu is about double the price of a typical good to excellent asian restaurant. All that said, the folks here will likely give you good service and a comfortable place to rest your feet. I just hope over time they improve the food, and bring to it some of the deep, tangy, sour, succulent, sweet, and spicy flavors that asian cuisine is renown for. read more

Went for dim sum Sunday recently and the food was so delicious! I've been wanting to check out chef Dennis's monthly dim sum for a couple of years now and now that I have, I plan to go back every month from now on! I had the steamed BBQ pork buns which were so lite and fluffy like clouds of joy, curry beef buns which were fried and looked dense, but when I cut into it was surprised to see was a thin wrapped puff that also was light fluffy and unreal good!!!Also ordered the steamed taro buns and custard tarts, both of which were just light sweetness, not really a dessert but perfect ending to the meal. The decorations inside were simple and elegant. The waitress was perfect for fine dining, attentive and present! I always ask for recommendations, she suggested I get the lychee cocktail, and it was delicious! So fresh, so flavorful! Next was the appetizers, we ordered the crab wontons and the ahi tuna ceviche. The crab wontons weren't my favorite, but that ahi ceviche?! So flipping good! The tuna chunks where large and completely seasoned throughout, presented in a martini glass the size was good for us to share. I ordered the duck as my main course, get the duck if you are thinking about it. The portion was equal to the price, filling. The duck was pared with rice and the yummiest sauce I have ever had. I ordered the lycheetini and my husband, the old fashioned. My drink was creamy, sweet, and full of lychee flavor. As an appetizer, we ordered the fried dragon whiskers. It is a lightly battered fried zucchini with a ranch style sauce. It was so good we wanted to eat it all at once. It comes as a large order, so we took half of it home. As our main course, we ordered the classic lo mein. You can add a protein, but we kept it without. It was good as is. We also ordered the sichuan beef and four seasons chicken. The sichuan was our favorite. It has a slight kick to it from the sweet spicy sauce. The beef was tender and the veggies were slightly crisp and glazed with sauce. My friends and I were soo excited to try this new location after seeing so many good reviews. But, unfortunately we were quite disappointed. I expect a higher end meal to be more experiential with beautiful ambiance and great service. Both the interior and exterior leave a lot to be desired as far as decor and ambiance. As far as service, we had to get up to ask for a waiter to serve us. Our waiter was polite but really not knowledgeable about the menu. They were also out of a few kitchen/bar items even though the dinner shift had just began. We decided to order three appetizers to split between four people. The Classic 5 Sampler, Fried Pork Potstickers, and Hoisin Chicken Lettuce Wraps were all tasty, but the food is definitely not enough to ever want to come back. One important note, happy hour specials are only available if you sit at the bar. This was disappointing since we were looking forward to taking advantage of happy hour during dinner. The selection was nice and they allowed to sub any protein which was great for vegetarian, vegan and meat diets within our group. Will easily become our Family's favorite Asian restaurant, and it's not your typical Asian restaurant either. Instead of a everything tossed in a Wok fried up and just dumped over a pile of rice or noodles. You get fantastic food prepared to tender texture combined with exquisite flavoring placed on top of the sauce with rice or noodles on the outer edge of the plate. Asian fine dining is what I see, and it shows as Chef Dennis takes pride in his work. He takes things to a whole new level, so much that the wife and I ate there Tuesday and Thursday and plan of going again Saturday. We will try something different every night till we decide our favorites. Which will probably be most of Chef Dennis's menu. My wife wanted Chinese food for dinner, we went to several places looking for a Chinese restaurant with a dining room, this was the only place we located near our hotel. The atmosphere was definitely not Chinese and I doubt they even had a Chinese cook working the kitchen. The food was disgusting Their General Tao's chicken was a fried Macdonald's chicken breast with oyster sauce poured over it. Their Chicken Lomein was all noodle no chicken or vegetables. The only entertaining part of our visit is that a robot bought the dinners to the table. My advice look for an authentic Chinese restaurant or settle for take out. Went there for a ladies night. I will admit that the curb appeal was a little off but don't let that deter you. Once inside you are welcomed with a very nice atmosphere and the customer service was outstanding. We loved our instructor, Dennis did an amazing job teaching us how to make dumplings and kept our glasses full. We took the waitress's recommendations for a cocktail and main dish - she recommended the blue ginger and some sort of beef noodle dish (I do not recall the exact name). The cocktail was pretty basic and the beef noodle dish was essentially a huge plate of flavorless broad noodles with some sautéed onions and about 5 small pieces of beef. The quality of the beef itself was decent, but we were underwhelmed considering the menu seemed impressive and the atmosphere/decor looked thoughtful and tasteful. We were impressed upon entering the restaurant but dissatisfied upon leaving with a belly full of mostly carbs. Okay, so I am updating my review for these guys after friends of ours inspired me to go back this weekend. I was impressed to see a few changes to their menu, tastes changed in the food, and happy to see they kept the edamame spread with flax crackers. I went for a totally different entree and got the short ribs with fries and slaw. Mike had the honey tuna ahi with rice and veg. We shared dragon whiskers as an app. The dragon whiskers are just as solid as they used to be, lightly fried, airy, crispy and they were sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. The dipping sauce was the same , and still delish with Sriracha oils Ontop. The ribs were hot, fresh, and cooked to perfection. They were like candied meat but could use a tiiiiny bit more sauce of some kind with them. The fries were your standard salt and peppered fries, needless to say I just ate the napa cabbage, carrot, fennel slaw but even asked for a second side of it and left the fries. The ahi tuna was beautiful, decently portioned, topped with a light drizzle of creamy wasabi sauce, and came with a book Choy, fennel, carrot celery mix and two tiny scoops of white rice. The rice could've used a little something but was still tasty all the same. My fave part was having their Thai tea creme brûlée for dessert. Delish!! Needless to say, I liked the menu changes, the tea cubes for my iced tea, and will so be going back! read more

When I said how bland the meal was, they all started talking about the Sous Chef, and how they as the staff, do not eat his food! Before I write another word, I want to let everyone know Blue Bamboo is NOT your "typical" Chinese restaurant. Their tagline is "Hip Asian Comfort Food." ' While they do offer traditional Asian dishes like chicken stir fry, egg rolls, lo mien with shrimp, rice noodles with beef, etc. Chef Dennis Chan puts his unique spin on Southern-faves like chicken pot pie with panko breaded chicken and a puff pastry lattice crust (definitely different but my fave pot pie in town). Service is EXCELLENT! Matt is especially awesome. And Dennis ALWAYS makes time to come out and say hi to diners, which is a nice touch. Also, Dim Sum Sundays once a month: June 15 is next. After a very long work week , the hubby & I decided to check out blue bamboos Asian fusion cuisine. The dinning area was small & hip in decor. We were seated in a socially distanced manner which was pleasing. The menu was extensive, so I decided to go with a simple entree since it was my first time dining there. I choose red curry shrimp & grits, which was said to be a favorite. My husband chose the half canton roast duck. We had a couple mixed drinks- which were were tasty and the chefs orange cake was a nice light finish. I wasn't impressed with the curry shrimp dish- it reminded me of shrimp tossed in a mild Louisiana hot sauce, I but attempted to eat it anyway since I don't like to send food back to the kitchen. My husband called our waiter over & Explained my dilemma. The situation was made right by replacing my meh shrimp dish with a more flavorful general's shrimp dish- yay! My husband enjoyed his duck dish which as expected due to the higher price point. After an amazing yelp event here a year or two ago I had high hopes but was sadly disappointed. Our server was nice and friendly but inconsistent throughout the dinner. The cucumber drink I started out with was just overwhelmingly alcohol forward and unbalanced. We chose the short rib tacos for an appetizer and they were a bit boring and chewy. I did like the edamame spread, however. The real disappointment was my main dish. I got a tempeh noodle entree and it was dry, dry, dry, dry. My kingdom for a sauce on this thing. We were in a little bit of a hurry otherwise I would've asked for some kind of sauce or anything to save the dish.
