We stopped at Blue Bat after a boat ride on the river to grab a small bite and it was a wonderful experience. Most notably, the waitstaff was so gracious; we sat outside despite impending rain but they kept checking the weather for us and moved us inside before we got drenched. The atmosphere is so bright and fun with multiple floors that are very open and then patio seating as well. I got the mule to drink and it was actually one of the best mules I've had (I'm a mule connoisseur). The table got some chips and salsa/queso, the chips were really great with a unique seasoning on them that I had never experienced elsewhere. I dunno, I really wanted to like this place, but left feeling underwhelmed. First, the pros: Great location right on the river with awesome views if you happen to snag a table outside -- there's patio and/or sidewalk seating. Also, they do happy hour, though it's mostly for discounted drinks and light side dishes. The space inside is cool, airy and modern, with a full bar and lots of seating. Also -- service is delightful. My food options though, I would not order again. Maybe I just chose wrong, but the Tandoori 'handheld' - basically marinated chicken and yogurt with parsley on flatbread - suffered from being almost suffocated by its wrapper. The flatbread (practically naan) was way too dense and thick, making it hard to get a sense of the flavors within. The 'Baja' taco - or handheld, if you like, since it did not resemble a Baja style fish taco - was a saucy mess, with the tempura batter coming apart in a river of chipotle aioli and a heavy topping of onions. The batter served no purpose - under the aioli it just turned soft and cold, as did the cod underneath. I give them props for trying something interesting but the results need refining. I've always been a fan of their margs because they're not too sweet, like so many others around town. It was a Monday night and not too busy, but service was still on the slower side. After a few disappointing visits the last few years, we thought we'd try again to see if there was improvement. We sadly confirmed another disappointment, with oxidized guacamole and woefully undercooked chicken that was dismissed when we brought it to the server's attention. We ordered the hot honey bao chicken bowl (which came out deconstructed onto a plate surprisingly) and the thai peanut salad, with a side of the bag chips with salsa and guac. The guac, although decently tasty, had some mystery dark spots in it. The thai peanut salad was zesty and very appropriately dressed, it was delicious but lacked substance since there were only leaves and a dusting of quinoa. The bao chicken was the worst offender, we told the server it looked like the chicken was still raw, and they told us that chicken thigh is supposed to be pink still. Ours was pink, rubbery, and definitely still raw. The sauteed veggies on the plate were unappetizing and almost inedible. We paid and left, don't think we'll be back. read more

Look, if you want good food for this price point, just go to Milwaukee's South Side. Everything here tastes like it's met flavor one time while very, very drunk at a house party. Mid at best. Some of the servers are good people, so I'll give them that. I've also heard through the restaurant grapevine that the sous chef (who decides all the specials for events and things) stole all their best ideas from their ex partner and talks trash about all the people who work for them, which might explain why nobody wants to work there and there's a high turnover rate.
