The food is mediocre. Years ago the food was amazing! The menu has changed and so has the food.

I've been to Blue Bonnet twice now and both were great experiences! The first was on a double date & I remember my food being very delicious - generous portions! (No photo of that one - sorry!) The only downside was the runny salsa - I'm very particular about my salsa and would have liked it to be chunkier, but that's just me! The second time, my boyfriend and I went for their 50th anniversary celebration, in which they were offering different 50% off discounts all week - so awesome! We both got the Carne Asada Burrito for $7 each. Such large portions and tasty - only thing that was missing was cheese, but oh well. I also sipped on a marg, which was a little too sweet for my liking but still a tasty treat. Would definitely come back to try their marg flight! This place is definitely unique and I think it's pretty difficult to go wrong with Mexican food so I'd say, give Blue Bonnet a try! read more

(Review based on delivery via Uber Eats) To start - get the chips. They're fresh and homemade and some of the best I've had. The food ... I got a combo, that comes with rice and beans, with 3 things to try a variety: a guac taco (anyone that knows me knows I usually steer clear of guac but wanted to try it), a bean tostada, and a cheese enchilada. The bean tostada was tasty and had their good refried beans with plenty of toppings... a bit soggy but to be expected since it was take out. Guac taco was odd. The cheese enchilada had decent flavor but the cheese wasn't melted somehow all the way through. Rice and beans were pretty standard. Overall, this place is fine. Nothing extraordinary but works for your Mexican food craving. read more

LOUSY!!! Their supposed "Perfect" Margarita, is a lot of things, but perfect ain't one of them. The Tequila went through that drink, ON STILTS! LOUSY!!! 8 bucks for a lemonade. This is a nostalgic restaurant! I was excited to come back here today for a late lunch. There were 4 tables sat, so quiet and during a lull for sure. I ordered a swirl margarita. The glass was much smaller than I remembered from the last time and the beverage was runny and cool- not cold or frozen. Based on the amount of sugar and lack/luster from the first beverage I ordered another margarita that was a step above their house... this is what EVERY margarita should be made like... hand-shaken and not sugar ridden with a hint of wells. My guest and I were starving so each ordered a plate. I had the chile rellenos with shredded chicken. The food was luke warm and the cheese inside the relleno was still shredded/not melted. I could only take one bite. After my personal bill was over $50 for 2 margs and a plate of food I was regretting coming here for the lack of love, warmth and excitement this place used to hold. read more

Food was bland and margarita didn't have any alcohol in it (and I'm a lightweight). My goddaughter is a pescatarian and ordered fish tacos. As she began to eat, she noticed a few chunks of beef. Very good Mexican food in Denver. One of my favorite places when I lived here, as well as when I visit now. The hot sauce is amazing. Lots of texture to it. Good taste. Enchiladas were very tasty. Green chili soup is legitimate and very good. Tacos Al Carbon are very tasty. Classic place in Denver to eat Mexican food. I always love the owner of the place walking around and checking on every table seeing how you liked your food. When I asked about him this time, I was told that he passed away last year. His wife and daughter now run the place. He was always an example to me of the way a business owner should run a business: simply checking with customers constantly to see how well they are liking the product or service that is being delivered. Back again August 14 2019: not sure why this place is only rated three stars. The food is very good. The chips were just OK. I would rate the food a five star! My wife and I both had salads that were fantastic. The hot sauce and the warm bean dip sauce is very tasty. Check out the two photos of the salads that we had for lunch! I have been dining here since I was ordering off their kids menu. Literally. If you want real Mexican food in Denver, this is it. Their new murals on the outside are arguably the most questionable business decision I've seen a restaurant in Denver make recently, but don't judge a book by it's *new cover. The most hidden gem on the menu that I'm here to self promote is their Steak Chimichanga. Trust me. Blue Bonnet doesn't deep fry their chimi & people tend to overlook that mentioned on it's description. Their loss. It's a massive flour tortilla stuffed with SO. MANY. hearty steak cubes... then smothered in amazing pork green chili. Some may call that burrito, but don't discredit the greatness alright. No matter what you are ordering - this place has a serious pot of gold with their indoor/outdoor seating section. It's pretty much indoors with no walls. Our waitress Celine was outstanding!! When we arrived it was full, but they opened a new section to get us in without a wait. My 4 year old daughter was treated like a queen. She frozen margarita with salt, just liked she asked!! The kids meal comes with flan, our daughter tried it and didn't like it. The adults loved it! Celine brought out sopapillas instead which were perfectly soft, lots of cinnamon and sugar and a little honey! Lunch highlights included green chile with huge hunks of pork that melted in your mouth and seafood enchiladas that were creamy and very flavorful. Visiting DEN after years away, and our favorite Mexican restaurant was closed. We recalled BB was solid, so we came for lunch w/ friends who were traveling with us. Regrettably, all four of us left disappointed in the food: most agreed it was generally bland; the quality of the ingredients implied cheap, bulk buy; the salsa was more like a runny sauce; the queso had the consistency of post-molten lava, such that an attempt to scoop with a chip lifted most of the cheese from the bowl. . . the best part of the meal was our friendly/efficient server, so the 2d star is for him. BEST SERVICE & BEST FOOD!!! Firstly, Mona is the sweetest hostess on earth. Within 5 minutes of walking In we felt like we were her most favorite people ever. She even gave us hugs on our way out. Service was the best I've ever had. The owner even came by to ask us how things were. Secondly, their food is fantastic. Their enchiladas have FEELING, their Mole is the real deal, and their salsa is perfection. We even ordered an entire QUART of that salsa to take home with us and they gave us an enormous paper bag FILLED with chips (they lasted us three weeks!!!). Thirdly, I had the perfect date so how could it have have been anything but excellent. (Sorry ladies, so good I snagged him!) We went to Blue Bonnet for the first time since the pandemic. I've lived in Denver for most of my life and this is not the Blue Bonnet I remember. The menu is much smaller than in the past and everything is pretty expensive. I ordered the Chili Lime Chicken tacos. The chicken was cold and nothing had much flavor or spice. My husband ordered the Chicken Chimi Changa and he liked it. His meal was warm so I assume my tacos were prepared before his Chimi Changa. We also order the queso. It was ok. It wasn't very spicy and the way they serve it, the queso got cool pretty quickly. There are a number of really good Mexican restaurants in Denver. Too bad Blue Bonnet is no longer one of them. read more

Not elegant dining whatsoever. I wanted to like this place, but it falls short of a good experience at a restaurant. It has a large outdoor seating area, but it was 90* today and I wanted A/C inside. Total Fail. It wasn't air conditioned and the lightbulb over our table was burnt out! Why the heck was this place crowded? The bar tender made us his version of a "flavored" margarita with cucumber and roasted jalapeño. Probably the nastiest drink I've ever had in a restaurant. We asked him to replace them for The Perfect Margarita and it was decent (for $11, I should hope so!) Chips the size of my hand and two tiny bowls of watery salsa were put on our table along with napkin-wrapped utensils. I felt like we were in a cafeteria! Surprisingly the salsa was tasty and the chips were fresh, but we had to break the chips into more manageable sizes and the watery salsa dripped all over the table and our clothes. Not good. Not at all classy. Upon viewing the menu options, we decided that this type of Tex-Mex wasn't to our liking. We ordered the appetizer of chili con queso and it was just okay. Not spicy at all. I gave it one star because you have to in order to post. All the food was WAY too salty, my lips are burned from the salt on the chips and everything else! Ordered two combo plates, each with a beef taco and one with cheese enchilada and the other with chicken enchilada. Plating was a mess. Couldn't tell what was what and actually looked like barf on the plate! No attention to detail at all, they must think just slop it on the plate, cover it with cheese and all is good? Very frustrated with our last experience at Blue Bonnet. We Attempted to use the Denver Dining Out Passbook - coupon book. Which distinctly says BOGO entree w/ purchase of beverage. It does not say, the beverage must be alcoholic. The server refused to honor the coupon because we ordered Sprite. I'm rating based on this particular experience. Also, I'm disappointed in the updated menu. We went specifically for mashed potato tacos, which were unique and weirdly good. The updated menu is boring. Probably the most Stale chips I've ever had that have been stacked and left out in the open on the patio. I observed flies landing on them and it almost immediately made me sick to my stomach. Looks like these have been sitting out all week. I ate much less than half my food and normally take the rest to go. I did not because I believe the food would have made me sick. The patio looks nice with beautiful artwork. We had average service. The server took my plate before I was finished. Then when I wanted to use my fork for the appetizer I could not because it was gone. The prices are higher than average for food that is below. It seems to me this place cares more about quantity than quality. The server should have asked if I was done first. I will not be back again. I expected more for my first experience here. read more

It has been here for a long as I can remember. Food is reliable. Located near the intersection of Broadway and Alameda...kmart is gone but the bonnet remains . Small lot but overflow in Costco. A tented patio, next to a open sided room. Then bar and dining room The chips and salsa good. We had chili rellanos and a chimi. Although we live out of state...on the other side of the country, really, there are a select few places that the hubs and I make a special trip to when we're in Denver visiting family. Blue Bonnet is one of them. This last time, though presented a new challenge. I had recently become aware of a gluten allergy and was excited to see the dedicated gluten free menu online. Questions swirled in my head about how good it would be, how knowledgeable the servers and staff were, etc. Well, I had no reason to wonder, they (as usual) did not let me down! I requested a GF menu as we were being seated and was asked if I had an allergy (yes) and was told that he would bring me out my own chips l, which were delicious btw. In addition to the salsa, there was a new (to us at least) bean dip that was pretty tasty. I had been delighted to see my favorite dish, the Blue Bonnet Chimichanga on the GF menu, and of course had to order it. Delicious marinated steak wrapped in a corn tortilla, smothered in green chili and cheese with sour cream, guacamole, lettuce and tomato on the side, all combine for a delicious dance of flavor on my tongue. The combination of the house margarita, however they marinate the wonderfully delicious steak, their green chili, each on their own are good, but oh, sweet mama! The combination of everything, wow. I've only been brought to euphoric tears by a meal three times in my life, with two of them being at Blue Bonnet, the most recent being this past trip. (The third case doesn't count cuz it was my own homemade sauce that came out extra amazing for some reason) I can't vouch for everything on the menu since I only ever get the same thing since I love it so much, BUT I will say, gluten or gluten free, you cannot go wrong with the steak Chimichanga and best margarita in Denver. Add to that the open air patio, and you have the makings of one amazing meal. I don't normally throw out the five star rating all the time, but every time I have been, my experience has been amazing and even with my new diet restrictions, I was not disappointed. To my dear Blue Bonnet, although it's only once every year or two I can enter your hallowed doors, I love you and thank you. Thank you for being my favorite restaurant, thank you for your recognition of allergies and dedication to finding ways to still give us the meals we fell in love with you for. Thank you for being in my favorite city, Denver, thank you for your open air patio, thank you for the friendly and knowledgeable staff, thank you for being so wonderful!!! I hate to say this but this was not a good experience. To begin the review on a positive note, our waitress was very friendly and kind. That's all I can say that is good. The food was awful - my girlfriend ordered the seafood enchiladas and couldn't eat more than half of one. There was a pink sauce on top that taste off and it was slathered over everything including the rice and beans. I ordered a three combo plate. I ordered ground beef enchiladas and it came out with a wet shredded beef. The beans in my burrito were so bland. Overall very bad tasting food. read more

I used to LOVE this restaurant. Being a Denver native I've been coming here for years. The past five years or so I have seen the food quality and service slip a lot. Today my husband and I decided we wanted to treat ourselves to some Mexican food and we drove all the way over to the Blue Bonnet. The first table they wanted to seat us at was located directly next to the service station where they fill chips and ice in glasses on a constant basis. We requested a quieter table and were abruptly served chips and salsa. After that point we were not acknowledged at all. No one even looked in our direction, and the restaurant was not busy. We sat there for about 20 minutes before I remembered that the last time we came here about two years ago the same thing happened. We won't be coming back. read more

Chips are stale, salsa tastes old, taquitos taste like they came from a bulk box picked up at sams club next door, and burrito was similar to Casa Bonita. Don't bother going to this place. It really is that bad. Service was equally as bad. We had to wave down our server to get drinks, order, and to pay.
