Some restaurants survive for decades because of nostalgia. Others survive because they continue making food worth coming back for. Blue Boy Sandwich Shop has been doing both since 1962. I stopped by for lunch after being invited to try their Cuban sandwich, a fitting challenge for a shop that has built its reputation on oversized portions and doing things the old fashioned way. The bread is baked in house, the mojo marinade is made from scratch, and that attention to detail shows up in every bite. Calling this sandwich "large" doesn't quite capture it. It's enormous. Thick enough to make you question your strategy before the first bite, and easily enough food for two, maybe even four lighter eaters. Inside the soft house-made bread is a generous stack of mojo marinated pulled pork, thick slices of ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard. It's substantial without feeling sloppy, every ingredient has a purpose. The timing of this visit couldn't have been better. I had just returned from two weeks in Miami, where Cuban sandwiches and Medianoches were part of my regular diet. Those flavors were still fresh in my memory. Blue Boy isn't trying to recreate Little Havana. This isn't served on traditional crusty Cuban bread, and that's perfectly fine. This is Jacksonville's interpretation, a Duval Cuban that respects the original while confidently doing its own thing. The pork is juicy and packed with citrus and garlic from the mojo. The ham adds saltiness, the Swiss melts into every layer, and the mustard and pickles provide the sharp, tangy contrast that every great Cuban needs. It checks every box while carving out its own identity. Some sandwiches are lunch. This one is lunch, dinner, and maybe tomorrow's snack if you somehow manage not to finish it all. I stopped by here for a sandwich on my way out of town. They take your order at the register when you walk in. They fill your drink for you while you are there. The turnover was pretty quick, even with a couple of online pickups showing up when I did and a big family at the register when I got there. I ordered my all-time favorite Reuben sub with 1000 Island dressing. The sub was very tasty and filling. The size of the sub did have me expecting a little more corned beef, though. One thing I noticed is that they move fast and swiftly to make sure everyone is getting served in a proper time. I had the chicken Philly with peppers and it was delectable. You have to try this place! First time visiting and it was everything was delicious. We ordered the #8 steak and cheese with onions and the buttermilk fried chicken bacon ranch sandwich. Make it a meal to add fries and a drink. The sandwiches reasonably priced and are HUGE!!! If you eat the entire thing you will be in an all day food coma. You'll eat half for lunch and have the rest for dinner. Karen took our order she was nice and efficient. I don't remember the guy's name in the back but he was super as he thanked us for waiting and asked how everything was. The food is worth the wait. If you're in a hurry this is probably not the place for you. It took a while but we didn't mind, we were not in a hurry and we could smell the goodness being made. It's an older place but has character. Old various photos, plenty of room for seating. It seemed like more people were taking their food to go. We sat and enjoyed our meal. Walking in the place it feels like its just one of those long time, institution spot that delivers on high quality food and excessive portions. I went in right at lunch and they had at least 10 - 12 customers in there waiting ahead of me. 1 cashier and 2 in the kitchen throwing down. It was a bit of a wait, but when it comes to good, no GREAT, quality food (and the insane portion size), it's WORTH IT. When my name was called and my order came up, I went to grab it off the counter and that thang felt like it weighed 10 lbs (I'm exaggerating of course) but it had some weight to it and I immediately knew... this was STACKED. I opened it up, gave it a good glance over to think about how I wanted to tackle this thing and dove in. This was one of the best Cuban sandwiches I've had in a long time. Not a traditional Cuban by means, because they do put it on their big bread they're famous for and they're not pressed on the grill, but, boooiiiiii... it was not lacking in anything. The Customer Service and the quality of food is always great. They do make everything in the house so everything is fresh. Just in my personal opinion when I get a sandwich, it just has too much bread/it's super thick. Everything can't be perfect. They also have a game you can play in the meantime, such as like Pac-Man. I love to support small business. Today they failed it took 32 minutes to get 1 half sandwich combo. They had 5 tables occupied and 3 already had their food. There were 2 call in orders. I have never waited but 5-10 minutes the 2 times I had been there before. No real explanation or apology. If I had t asked about my fries I would not gotten them. If the place was pretty full and people constantly picking up orders then you would expect to wait longer. This was not the case. Get your act in gear or you will go out of business. read more

OMG these sandwiches are off the chain big and delish. I ordered the chicken salad round with lettuce tomato and whatever else they put on it. Good gosh was it huge and delicious. There is a wall of fame for all the big boys that have eaten their weight in subs and burgers. The seating area is adequate for sitting down and pigging on your behemoth meal. If you get a round and have a friend, think about getting one and spitting it, unless you're saving it for dinner. Service was amazing with the ladies up front having this whole ordering and feeding hungry folks down to a science. I was really frustrated with coming here. I used to frequent the one in Arlington and I've honestly never had an experience like the one I had today. I placed my order online before I even got there and as soon as I walked in, there was a family behind me. the person did not even acknowledge me, and then just straight up, looked at the family and tried to take their order which fine. Maybe she thought I was with them or whatever so I ignored that. She finally came up to me and I told her I placed an order online. She said OK it's working, Go sit in the dining room so I did. And when I saw five other tables that came in and ordered after me all get their food and some even finish their food before I got mine I was frustrated. This is about 35 minutes after I had placed my order so I went up and checked again, and the woman behind the counter just looked at me and said it's working, no estimate or acknowledgment of a long wait time or anything. I know I ordered the super club, but I literally ordered one sandwich. I came back up to check two more times then finally at about 55 minutes. My order was ready. There was no communication about it needing to take that long no communication if they lost my order or what but I was so hungry and it was so hot in there because I don't think there's AC in the building I literally started to feel faint. Waiting an hour for one sandwich is insane. I will say the bread is just how I remember and it was delicious. The sandwich was also delicious. However, after waiting for an hour for my sandwich, they also got it wrong so that was also very frustrating. The only reason I got the super club was to share with my husband I ordered without mayonnaise and there's mayo all over the sandwich so honestly, I should've just got the half portion because I am wasting over half of the sandwich. It was the best thing in the sandwich business. I had wanted to go to this one for quite sometime since the other one closed. There was no one in the dining area at all, so we figured we would be served quickly. That's where it was a terrible experience. We sat down and waited nearly 45 minutes for our sandwich. We ordered fries with cheese and bacon that came out after we had eaten half our sub. The sandwich, I got the chicken Philly. The bread was just as delicious as I remember. Homemade!! There was very little filling though even though what was in there was good. It's still seems to be the same size as back in the day, so you still get basically two subs out of one. My husband got the turkey, bacon, ranch. He said he was impressed after us being there for what seemed like an extremely long time. The fries came out and were not worth what we paid for them. The place itself could be more inviting and the decor updated. I don't know that I will be back as now I know how much it has changed and the service just wasn't there.
