Finally getting a chance to review this place. I've passed by it for a few years, but finally wanted a simple, no frills burger. Ordered the hamburger with fries and got a small drink as well. It was just under $13 which isn't terrible in this neighborhood. The people were very nice, no line, and my food was ready in under 5 minutes. The inside is like the food: simple and no frills. After passing by for years I finally noticed their open sign was on early in the morning before I got to work so this day I was a hangree and I stopped. A local favorite - Goal Post does excellent renditions of all the Jax classic sandwiches. The key is the excellent tabouli, a key component of the veggie and desert riders. The steak in a sack is ground beef-based, with plenty of punchy banana peppers.l, and the Goal Post Special is like a steak in a sack on steroids. Goal Post is my favorite go to for a breakfast sandwich. My favorite is the bacon, egg & cheese in a pita. The bacon is cooked perfectly with the melted cheese all over. So delicious. I usually order ahead for pick up on my way to work. Their taboulli is their specialty so good, any sandwich with it is delicious. I like that it's so close and I can walk to the shop. With it being just across from Fishweir Elementary parking can be a challenge in the morning when parents are dropping off their kids. The couple who own the shop are very nice and pleasant to talk to. They keep the restaurant clean. Goal Post only serves breakfast & lunch. The busiest time is lunch so get there early. I've been meaning to swing by this little deli for a long while, but every time that I have tried they were closed. This morning, I dropped my niece off to school nearby and headed over here to grab some breakfast before heading to my fellowship. I'm that person who, instead of getting a breakfast sandwich, orders a BLT and some tabouli. Yes, Goal Post Sandwich Shop is yet another deli in town run by a family of Middle Eastern descent. Please don't take this as a bad thing because it isn't. I *LOVE* being able to walk into, almost, any deli in Jax and have the ability to order some tabouli. It makes me a very happy camper. This particular deli puts their tabouli in a drink cup and you can order from 4 oz to 32 oz of it, if your heart wishes for that much. I ended up getting 8 oz, which came in a cup equivalent to that of a small coffee. That's quite a bit of tabouli if you think about it. Just like any Italian restaurant will cook their pizza or pasta differently, every person who makes tabouli makes theirs a little different. Goal Post's tabouli has no cucumbers and is mostly parsley, mint, with a bit of tomatoes, and of course, bulgur, but not as much as other taboulis that I've had. However, it's still delish! I have no qualms with my BLT either. Let me give some major props to Goal Post for being one of the first delis to not mistakenly put mayo on my sandwich, even after I asked for none. I lived in the Avondale area 10 years ago and was close enough to walk to this place. Which I did. An embarrassing number of times for breakfast and lunch. I'm 40 now and have moved away from Jax, but whenever I get back I bend over backwards to come back to this place. It's still my favorite sandwich shop in the known world and I'll never get over the nostalgia of the little "community hub" cafe it provides. You're constantly running into neighbors and coworkers, grandparents with the grandkids...basically every good citizen under the sun. Always happy and stuffing their face as they show pictures on their phones and catch up on life. I've eaten most of the menu but their Camel Rider pita w/fries (seriously the best fries) is still my fave. Can't say enough about how much I love this place and the owners. I really hoped this was going to be our NEW go-to spot for sandwiches and Camel Riders but their Steak-in-a-Sack was really lackluster. It wasn't bad by any means but when The Sheik is a little bit farther down the road, you really have to up your game! We also tried their Falafel stuffed pita which was also rather forgettable. The quality of the pita was very soft and chewy! It was probably the best thing we tried there. We DID appreciate the fact that we made an order right before closing, but no negative feelings were felt. In fact, the owners threw in an EXTRA piece of baklava at no extra charge! I've been here twice. The first time for a gyro, that I was craving and referred by a friend. The gyro meat was pre-sliced lunch meat style gyro meat, and as the heart of the gyro, this was a fail for me. However, the french fries were nice and crispy, which I'm a big fan of! My second visit was because I was craving those crispy fries. I stayed away from the gyro and ordered a cheeseburger. I sat in horror as I watched the cook press down on my patty dozens of time while it was cooking, forcing any chance of juiciness out and banishing it the grease trap. Still, the burger was acceptable even if dry and those fries hit the spot. The prices here are decent too. It's a bit family run and divey, but the food is simple and except for the cardinal sin of pressing the crap out of a burger while cooking, it meets expectations. Y'know, this place hasn't changed AT ALL in like 35+ years. That is a good/bad thing. Though the "Gobbler" is now just a turkey sandwich, it is good and the Combo is a classic. Fries are institutional but ok. Tabouli is good. The bad? The owners have not upgraded ANYTHING with exception to maybe seating upholstery and that was probably because they were ripped and there was no way around it. I also feel sorry for the people who work here - they have to work in silence and the owner's wife hovers over them like she is going to beat them if they mess something up.
