Fabulous hostess/server! Knowledge, friendly, attentive. The atmosphere is inviting and comfortable, we did not feel rushed. The music was perfect, the coat hook on the booth was another nice touch not over looked. The lighting wasn't too dim to read the menu, and the hat/lampshades were cute! Now the food...amazing! The bread with the dipping oil was first, best I've ever tried! We had the couscous, lamb and chicken with the delicious salad topped with feta. The spices were not hot spicy but very flavorful. The meat was cooked to perfection, loved the lamb! The Moroccan mint tea was served into glasses, again, delicious! For dessert, I had the Moroccan dates. Typically, I don't order desserts, but am so happy that I didnt pass this time! Outstanding restaurant! Looking forward to my return to try a few more dishes!! read more

This place has amazing food, a great vibe, and a tentative waiter named (I believe) Eduardo!! They were so short staffed and he was the only server, bless his heart, taking care of 5+ tables. He is running around like crazy and making sure every table has what they need! The food - spectacular. The tea was amazing and the presentation was beautiful. I hope they can find the help they need because one waiter on a Friday night isn't enough and I feel for that waiter who might get rude customers when it's really not his fault. Overall 11/10 and my mouth won't stop watering at the thought of grape leaves. read more

I'd give Blue Fez 4 stars for the food. It's flavorful and abundant, but our Restaurant Week service was sadly lacking. Two in our party had serious food prohibitions, and the server, pleasant enough, seemed surprised that we would ask her to check on ingredients. We dined early, and yet one of the restaurant week entrees was unavailable, which we didn't learn until long after the order had been taken. The final straw was that the only gluten-free dessert on the prix fixe menu, from which we had all ordered, was also out, and the server refused to substitute a coffee for the dessert because "it's not on the restaurant week menu". We'll give this place another chance because we want to encourage a wider array of restaurants in Salem. The service issues are all fixable, if the management is willing to do the training. I hope they care enough to bring the service up to the level of their food. read more

Food: the mosaic plate was ok but the grape leaves did not taste homemade but rather from a can which is a big no no for any Middle Eastern restaurant. The bread with garlic spiced olive oil was excellent. The Fouscous was not what I expected to be. It wasn't seasoned enough and the spices were raw and bland at the same. Ambiance: the minimal Morrocan decor was ok. There was a TV screen that showed some pictures that seemed to be from Morroco, but other poor quality photos of food and random pictures of memes and other internet photos as if connected to someone's personal cell phone photo gallery. These don't belong in any restaurant. The music was also all over the place - more suited for a bar than a restaurant. Staff: excellent, hard-working. Price: expensive for what you get. read more

Solid Moroccan inspired fare that is a nice addition to the Salem dining scene. The place itself is well decorated - modern but homey and comfortable. We have been just once (a busy Friday night) and ordered only 2 mains and wine, so perhaps it is unfair to fully judge the food on that limited sample... but I will anyway of course. Frankly one hit and one miss. The chicken fassi was tremendous. Silken chicken breasts, delicious exotic sauce of fruits and Moroccan spices over wonderful yellow (saffron?) rice. The other dish however, was an overcooked salmon topped with chopped vegetables - a bit bland with no real identity. Staff was warm and friendly, but could perhaps familiarize themselves a bit more with the food. When we asked what the bread was (a warm and delicious loaf right from the oven) the chap said -- "some kinda corn bread" -- which it wasn't. Waitress also undersold the rice in the chicken dish by saying it was "plain white rice" -- which again, it was not. Overall though, a nice experience and I'll definitely be back to give it another try. read more

Four of us just had Sunday lunch at Blue Fez. The service was great; the food beautifully presented; and the taste excellent. On the server's recommendation I ordered the lamb, eggplant, and couscous special. The choice was delicious. However, I expected more than three pieces of lamb and when the bill arrived, I had "sticker shock." The luncheon special apparently was $26, while all the other entrees were in the $15 range. Even the lamb on a pita bread was in the same $15 range, so the choice of meat could not have been an issue. I think I was charged a dinner price for the luncheon special. Nothing else was $26. The server made no mention of the price and when questioned, simply stated, "it was a special." More honesty would have been appreciated. Thus a bitter taste was left on an excellent meal. read more

Highly recommend this place. Recently stopped here over Columbus Day weekend, which is probably the busiest weekend in Salem. The restaurant was obviously busy and waitstaff were working their butts off. The food took a tad longer than one might expect to come out. However, the owner and waiter were absolutely lovely about it. Not to mention this was one of the best falafel I've ever tasted. We had a delightful meal at Blue Fez. Noel was an attentive and knowledgeable server. The food was delicious and a nice change from the seafood and American restaurants that dominate Salem. Highly recommend this wonderful restaurant. Our fifth time here. Love sitting outside as well as inside. Central location perfect for Salem people watching. Our favorite dishes are the Mosaic plate and the vegetarian tajine with couscous and now their crab cakes! The crab cakes ate an original interpretation and the best we have found anywhere! Very moist because made in filo pastry to hold them together instead of the usual breadcrumbs and fillers. The chef uses lots of fresh ingredients in all the dishes, which is hard to find these days. Experienced Blue Fez for the first time last night, and sorry that I waited so long before trying it. A warm summer night and sat outside at the suggestion of Cody, the server who happily greeted us. That was the first of many great suggestions. Being a Blue Fez virgin I wanted/needed lots of direction, and Cody was a great guide. From the Cigar Sampler starter with three different offerings, to one of the night's specials of Lamb and Chicken over couscous, along with fantastic wine pairings, I am considering the evening a success. A stellar Mediterranean menu with no misses. The specials always look and taste deserving of having their own status as specials. The appetizers taste like they were prepared fresh on the other side of the wall and are the perfect portion for splitting and sharing with friends. We came here on a whim after finding our original option unexpectedly closed. Boy are we so glad we did. We all shared the array of vegetarian entrees (rfissa, vegetarian couscous and the vegetarian paella) as well as appetizers of the falafel and grape leaves. The food was impeccably prepared, very generous portions and so tasty. We kept sharing dishes with the delicious hot mint tea. We will definitely be back often. After hearing all the buzz about this restaurant we were anxious to try it. It must have been an off night. Although we didn't have a reservation (this is 6pm on a Friday night in Salem after all!) the waiter sat us with out any fuss. Our evening went downhill fast after that. Clearly, not enough staff to handle the number of patrons - as far as I could tell there was exactly one waiter, one bartender, and one busboy. Not a manager in sight. We were quickly brought two complimentary dinner rolls and some olive oil - huh? A nice enough dinner roll to be sure, but how about some pita and hummus - just sayin'. We finally ordered two cocktails, reasonably priced but utterly uninspiring. We also ordered the falafel appetizer and our entrees the lamb "tagine" and the duck. Then we waited...and waited...and waited. When our falafel came out it was OK, heavy on mint, and maybe a tad overfried. After even more waiting, we finally asked our waiter about our entrees, and given that the kitchen was completely slammed, we offered to settle up if our orders hadn't gone in yet. A few minutes later, the entrees appeared. The "tagine" consisted of a lamb shank (not at traditional stew), atop large couscous. Although the shank was nicely prepared it could have used a bit more seasoning, and without the stew gravy not sure I'd call it a tagine. The duck was nicely cooked, but only a few slices of breast meat atop the aforementioned couscous. Again, there was not much of a flavor profile. Since we'd been here for almost almost 2 1/2 hours we passed on dessert and paid our check. This is pretty pricey dining for Salem, (although drinks seem like a bargain!) so not sure it is worth it just yet. Again, maybe this was an off night, but I probably won't be back until the novelty wears off - if this place is still around. read more

Excellent! Really, I'll share this is my first review in years and although I have had good intentions in the past, never got around to reviewing a restaurant. Ok, so I promised myself after enjoying an outstanding dinner at Blue Fez - I would write a review. Now that that is out of the way, I'll start by saying the chef really is amazing. He graciously came out to say hello after we complimented his food. As a vegan I appreciate that he offers an amazing variety of options and for the meat eaters at our table, they loved the lamb shank, meatballs, and other dishes. The Mosaic Platter appetizer was exception, beautifully presented, and really filling. We ordered an extra side of homemade pita that came out fresh baked and steaming hot. I believe the pita side was less that a few dollars and well with it. Portions are generous, which we all appreciated. Both my friends, fiancé, and I have traveled to Israel numerous times and enjoyed amazing food. One person in my group grew up there and is RARELY happy with this type of cuisine here in the states.....Well, no more! Blu Fez is authentic with the right amount of flavor and spice and was way past our expectations. Also the hostess (I think Lauren???) was beyond welcoming and accommodating and our server was excellent. We will be back very soon. I also believe they have delivery service. also, the Mosaic Platter and a few sides along wine would be a perfect Friday night treat at home! read more
