Blue Fish is like home to me. It's the first place I ever tried sushi and I absolutely fell in love. This was many many moons ago but I've been consistently coming to Blue Fish for over 15 years. Yes the owners have changed and the restaurant has made some changes over the years but the food has stayed consistently solid. I was reading some of the reviews about rude wait staff but I have always been greeted warmly when coming here. The restaurant is a bit small and can get very cramped during the busy peek hours. You can call ahead of time and they will be more than happy to tell you how long the wait is. Put your name down and walk along Montrose it's nice little street. read more

Great service, good rolls but not great. I tried the thai shrimp roll. Great in theory, but they used chunky peanut butter which was way too sticky and dry. I'd suggest using creamy peanut butter and mixing it with peanut oil to make more of a sauce. The coconut shrimp was also burnt and the tails were still in it, meaning I had to take them out of the roll which made it fall apart. Not user friendly! Honestly, we used to love this place. Years ago. Every year we try to give it another chance and every time it disappoints worse than the time before. Just disgusting. The quality of the food is terrible! The rice has so much sugar in it that when you bite into a piece, it's like syrup seeping into your mouth! The fish felt watery and not fresh one bit. Very expensive, but I keep coming back because their food is pretty decent and they have variety. From the many items on the menu that I have tried, my favorite was probably the kushi-yaki. They bring a grill over so that you can warm up the kushi-yaki over the grill. (see picture) Pricey but worth it and you can't find something like this around the area. I have also tried the eel bowl, which is more like eel over rice. I have to say that it is pretty good, but I think $17 for it is a bit too overpriced. Yellow tail collar is also pretty good here and the quality of the sashimi and sushi is probably the best in the area. The reason why I can't quite give this place over 3 stars is because of their price. Some dishes, I understand, but there are just some dishes that are questionable. The service here is always a hit or a miss as well. But if you are looking for a nice Japanese restaurant/ Izakaya around the area, Blue Fish isn't so bad~! read more

My only disappointment is not going to this place sooner, and it right under my nose. My friend and I were craving sushi last Saturday, and decided to give this place a try since it's so close to my house. As we walked in, they sat us right away. We went to the Izakaya section, and not to the regular restaurant. They're next door, separated by a wall anyway. We ordered edamame and miso soup as starters. The waiter also recommended the crispy rice tuna so we ordered that. Since I love spicy tuna we ordered the Anush Roll which had fresh spicy tuna over small California rolls along with fresh tomatoes cut on top. Then we ordered the Special Library Roll which has fresh albacore on top with small amount of caviar. And last but not least, we ordered the Fire Roll - I think that's what it was called. But it literally was on fire! They had a small amount of small on the side of the plate which was on fire. The presentation of their dishes were very neat, organized, and very appealing. The waiters could not have been more sweet. They checked on us often to make sure we were taken care of. One of them even spent some time with us saying some jokes and making us laugh. Typically this place puts out pretty good sushi, with the service pretty good as well but tonight I was really shocked after they made a mistake and instead of making it right they cut corners making our sushi. We ordered, over the phone, 3 lobster cut rolls and 2 crispy rice spicy tuna items. The lady on the phone was difficult to understand so we said it 3 times "cut rolls cut rolls cut rolls please" for the lobster rolls. When we finally felt comfortable she understood we said thank you and she told us how long and hung up. Then I arrive to pick up and she immediately takes my card and charges it and doesn't bring back an itemized receipt. I the. Asked for it and she brought the food out and I got to my car and before I left I checked to make sure it was right, unfortunately the was not. They gave us 3 hand rolls. So I walked back and she took the 3 hand rolls back and I watched her bring to the sushi chefs. Then they passed off to someone in the back. And I could tell they were having the person in the back make them which isn't a problem since they were probably more prepared to expedite. The problem was my concern was they would take apart the 3 hand rolls to make the cut rolls. And I was right. The 3 cut rolls I ended up getting back were an absolute mess. Every one of them fell apart. Couldn't pick up a single one without the paper falling apart. And I'd say about 25% of the rolls didn't have any lobster in them, and some had half of little pieces. We ordered a Bulgogi/Chicken combo, on the plate was a giant whole RAW mushroom and two large thick cut RAW carrot pieces (are these for the horses? Are they even washed?). What a horrible experience and disappointment. Will never come back and don't recommend you do either. First of all, food was blah at most, to say it was nothing impressive is a compliment, it was actually not good and to think that for that they charge actually pretty medium high prices, it's not worth it at all. When we came in, there was no one waiting, they still made us check in on an iPad and then wait for 5 minutes outside even when the iPad said we are the only party there. All this is happening while there are 5 empty tables outside and 4 inside. Finally when we are seated, they bring the food wrong. We had ordered regular edamame and they brought Chili. Refused to take it back giving an excuse of Covid. I'm not sure how their mistake is our fault and how Covid impacts them taking their food back and not charging for something we didn't eat. And final straw that made me write this review is them coming and basically kicking us out. The food was still unfinished and they came asking us if we are ok, we said yes, less than one minute later they bring the check without us asking with an attitude. Chicken teriyaki, yaki soba, and udon with a couple of standard rolls. The cooked stuff was nothing to write home about. It was pretty run of the mill stuff. I was more disappointed with the sushi. Had to ask for wasabi since it didn't come with any of the rolls. The texture of the rolls was not what I am used to. The sushi rice tasted very stoggy and old. Great place to have sushi with a wide variety of rolls and specials. Food is consistently good and the service is excellent. Happy to see they are doing business in these still challenging times. They have definitely taken safety of guest and staff above and beyond what is required and I can understand what some people are saying regarding their complaints but come on people they are doing what they can to make sure everyone feels safe. Dined here last week for lunch after visiting Descanso Gardens and man was this a huge mistake. The fish was not fresh and the rice tasted old. It didn't even taste like sushi rice. The tuna I got from my 5 piece sushi and sushi rolls combo was brownish. For $22.95, this has to be at a good level but it looked like there was no quality control at all and they were just selling leftover old fish. SMH.
