We popped in here for a family lunch prior to Christmas. Upon arrival the place was PACKED, but we were seated quickly. The volume was a little loud for a family conversation, especially with Grandma and her hearing aids, but food and service were great. We got the steak bites and cheese curds to start. Everything arrived hot and fresh, incredibly fast for how busy the place was. The steak had a kick but was delicious, and the cheese curds super light. I snagged the sunny sliders as a risk and was not disappointed. I haven't seen these on the menu anywhere else and loved the combo of the Hawaiian roll, crispy sunnies and the sauce. I would love to go back for more. My mom got something new and didn't love it. She didn't complain, it just wasn't what she expected. Our server noticed and asked about it, and when she realized mom didn't like it and didn't eat it, she took it off our bill without being asked. This was above and beyond what was expected! It certainly wasn't the restaurant's fault she didn't like it, and them taking that step of service in the moment, especially on a busy day went a long way with me. Blue heron offers a good variety! I love the chicken wild rice soup but also recently just had their cilantro chicken rice soup and it was really good! We love getting the steak bites each time we come! The mushroom pasta and the coconut chicken has been a personal fave of mine. The set up of the place is very simple but service has always been good and it's always nice to have a range of choices for both drinks and food. We also get to enjoy playing pull tabs! read more

We went to Blue Heron last night because I saw a post on their Facebook page of a candy cane infused vodka hot chocolate that looked amazing! It wasn't on the menu and our server said the bartender only had peppermint vodka. I showed her the picture and she said she would try to make it. I really appreciate her efforts, she was very nice. However it was too strong and I couldn't drink it - it looked nothing like the picture. I was so disappointed! Below is what I wanted, the one I received had a lot of peppermint vodka and plain whipped cream swirled on top. Again not the server's fault since she had no idea of what her restaurant was advertising. Overall our food was good, the service was great and I'd recommend Blue Heron. But avoid the drinks posted on Facebook because you will not get what you are hoping for. read more

Went in for breakfast before a ladies day out. Was pleasantly surprised that ot was hustling and bustling, even at an early hour. Our server took really good care of our party of 6. We were traveling north to Duluth and stopped here for lunch. It's a very nice place. I had the Greek salad with chicken. The chicken was grilled, moist and delicious. The salad was fresh Romain with Kalamata olives, a lovely feta, red onions small tomatoes and cucumbers. A sweet dressing came with it. (I would have had it less sweet.) Overall it was delicious! My girlfriend and I had dinner last Thursday. As always, the food was GREAT, but the manager Angie made the experience beyond exceptional. She made the rounds of the restaurant and introduced herself, and checked on how our meal, service, etc was. I have rarely ran into that kind of service in a LONG TIME! I went to the Blue Heron Grill for dinner with friends and we had a great experience! The lighting was dimmed in the whole restaurant which really set the mood for an intimate dinner. Ordered Blue Heron today through Door Dash and was pretty disappointed. Our burger came with no toppings even though we ordered bacon, lettuce, etc. Nachos just had toppings thrown on top, and no sauce for the walleye fingers which used to be really good but they changed them. These might be little things but when you pay over $70 you kind of expect things to be correct. I don't think we will be ordering from them again. read more

I loved the chicken coconut salad I had, very fruity with a tasty dressing. We also ordered the seared ahi. It was good , coming from Hawaii we know and love our fresh ahi. Only suggestion would be to serve it with a little soy sauce or ponzu sauce. We will be back to try some other food. It looks like a good place to watch a sporting event too. read more

As a vegatarian hanging out with a Vegan, finding food at bar restaurants in the suburbs is not easy. In fact, it's hard. Really hard. After a long gravel bike ride nearby, we were thrilled to stumble upon the Blue Heron. In fact, we're a little stunned it's only three stars. The ambience is a step above a typical suburban bar restuarant. It was a little too hot after a long ride to eat outside, but their two patios looked delightful. We ate in the bar area which was airy and spacious with lots of natural light. We appreciated the spacing between all the tables. Getting down to the beverages. They have a well curated cocktail menus as well as a good wine and beer selection. We were pleased that they allowed my friend to sample the cider they had on tap before committing to a glass. It's a Sunday, so of course a bloody Mary was in order. I was thrilled that not only did the waitress offer a beer chaser without me requesting it, but I could choose any beer on the menu. Many restaurants will charge for that privilege. The bloody itself was okay . . they need to put a little more pizzaz in the mix, but it was nothing a little tabasco could not cure. We both ordered the vegan mexi wraps and really, really liked them. As noted, it's hard to find vegan food at a bar restaurant, and especially food that is both healthy and tasty. The only thing I would have done differently with the wrap was add black beans and a side of salsa. My friend ordered a side salad - again, very impressive. Mixed greens, instead of iceburg, and fresh veggies on top. I ordered the steamed broccoli which was smple but hit the spot. The menu had some great options for meat eaters and fish eaters, but we did not try any. We are just so thrilled at the options they had for us. The service was great - friendly waitress who was attentive despite multiple tables. And as noted above, she let us sample before buying. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for lunch or dinner in the Hugo area. read more

We are frequent flyers at Heron and just wanted to share our latest experience. We were attending a seminar in the dining room. Our table setting had water carafes but no glasses. Though I had requested a glass late into the meal service also while the host was presenting, it was never delivered to our table. Upon leaving though, our waitress was waiting for us as we exited the room expressing regret for the lack of service. She explained that the host presenter requested 'no admittance' by wait staff after serving the main course. The perfect place to meet on a bicycle ride: close to the trails with great lunch options (including some in the group who have different dietary restrictions). Since I was biking back to our original spot, I took a pass at the alcohol offerings...instead just lusting after lunch mates had great beers (16 oz Schools Octoberfest $6.25) and interesting cocktails (Razzatini was "amazing"). My French Onion Soup was delicious (not too salty/weak) topped with French bread cubes & melted Swiss cheese. The "Pick 2 Combo" was perfect for me: not too much food and reasonable price ($11.00). Just meh. Super disappointed today. All kids meals we so over seasoned the kids didn't eat it. I was hoping to get my favorite beef stroganoff, but they took it off the menu. Opted for the chicken Alfredo instead. It looked pretty but was so bland, and the little bits of chicken were so dry. Thankfully the French Onion soup was good. Otherwise I would have been leaving hungry. I'll probably still have to feed the kids a second dinner though. read more

Just traveling through here to Duluth after a flight into MSP. So hungry that I forgot to take pics. We had the ham and bean soup and the French onion. Both amazing. So good that I took some home. I got the house heron salad with blue cheese. Also, amazing. Ha! Ha! See a trend here? :) BF had the coconut chicken bowl and he said it was great! Service was quick and friendly. DISAPPOINTING AGAIN Got down this way again, and thought it would be a good place for an early dinner. I found a good spot at the bar, and got comfortable. I could view 5 tvs from my seat, and every single one was on the same station. Why do that? Never understood that train of thought. Non of the salads sounded like what I was in the mood for, except the steak salad. I can get that exact salad near my house for $12, and it is consistently perfect. So $18 on a hit or miss seemed excessive. Although the Coconut Chicken Salad was enticing, coconut doesn't always agree with me. Must have something to do with that pina colada night........ So to the burger menu! Now, when you promote "hand pattied " burgers, you set the bar pretty high. Add bacon, cheese sauce, and a pretzel bun, and that should be a slice of heaven. Plus, cooked to temp!!!! Bingo! Let's see Bacon Burnt Bun was all flattened (bottom of the bag) Lukewarm at best Cole Slaw barely over room temperature Sat in the window and died??? Favorite place around- large menu and the patio seating in the summer is wonderful. I've had several items off the menu and all were good. The chimichanga is delicious and the portion is overly generous. The Texas Patty melt was very tasty and it came with waffle fries that I dipped in their seasoned sour cream dip- so good. We've always like the food & service at the Blue Herron but today's visit was not acceptable. The server was inattentive. We were practically done eating when our first beverage arrived. There was no acknowledgment at all. We asked for the check when our beverage arrived--only to wait & finally went in to get our bill. No one was at the front--our server was talking at a table & noticed me. She did apologize only to say just leave the bill there & walked away. I was a little worried with only 3 stars, but glad I had dinner here. I was blown away and think the atmosphere was so beautiful, and that was only the start. Once I got my Cubano (Cuban) I was even more blown away. I live in Florida and have had many Cuban sandwiches so I know what good Cuban sandwich is, but honestly this was the best Cuban I have ever ate. Kudos to their chef! Who would have thought finding an incredible Cuba sandwich in Minnesota. I am so sorry I didn't take a photo because I was too eager to eat it. But I did take a photo of the grand finale, the Carrot Cake! It beeps when it backs up. WOW! Do not order this unless you have 4 friends or family to share. It is not only incredible tasting, you could hide behind. I did take a photo and placed a one dollar bill next to it to show the scale. Also the service and staff were outstanding. We ate on a Friday evening and everyone was busy as bees running around yet all the staff worked like a team taking orders. Some brought food out as quickly as possible, and our waitress was on point making sure we got attention without getting to much attention. She was incredible and I wish I would have got her name because I wanted to give credit where credit is due, but in all every staff member was incredible. The Blue Heron must have a great manager. This place needs to be upgraded to 5 stars, it is totally worth coming and more than once. Thank you for being such a great restaurant especially in these crazy times trying to deal with this corona virus, which brings me to the final comment. It was spring greens with strawberry's, pineapple and blue berries along with chicken breast coated with a coconut batter. The dressing was a sweet lemon poppy seed. I really enjoyed it. I ordered through door dash last night. I ordered a Cubano sandwich, cheese curds and cheesecake. 1 of each. when my order arrived there were 3 boxes all of which were written on saying what they were. I went to open the box that was for my sandwich only to find cheese cake. so i thought it was an honest mistake of mislabeling. i opened the one that said cheesecake only to find another cheesecake. I opened the cheese curds only to find out most them were just deep fried batter with nothing inside of them. I tried to contact the restaurant last night with no answer, no voicemail. so i let pictures and a review on door dash. I have ordered from here before and it was on my favorites list. Super yummy! We ordered for delivery and the food was delivered promptly, still hot, and delicious. The husband really enjoyed their Cubano and I LOVED the sunfish sliders! Nothing was overly greasy, and they seem to use great quality ingredients! They were also super responsive when I emailed regarding allergens on their menu. Totally love that! The Blue Heron is a great local grill, work a visit. I have eaten here a few times. The staff is always friendly and gives plenty of attention to the tables. They have a great patio out back, which overlooks a small pond and fountain. It's a great surrounding on a summer evening. They have great walleye bites and their burgers are filled with flavor and worth a try. This establishment is well worth your support and worthy of giving them a try. read more

Went here for lunch the other day. Nice waiters, but slow service. We had the chicken fajitas and the grilled chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli. The fajitas came with lots of toppings and you could choose between tortillas and lettuce wraps. I chose the lettuce wraps for a gluten free option and was happy I did! The chicken was very tender and seasoned and the garlic mashed potatoes were full of flavor. Big portions so we both had leftovers. Wasn't too busy around lunch time and they have indoor and outdoor seating and a bar. Prices were more on the spendy side for a grill so we were happy to have a $10 coupon. read more
