HORRIBLE SERVICE ALL OF THE TIME!!! we have lived less than 1 mile away from this restaurant for ~5 years and are so disappointed - we have been here NUMEROUS times!!! This is the only "American" restaurant in Hugo and the service is horrendous. "Management" has excused terrible service due to servers at customer tables having "potty breaks." - WOW!!! The most recent encounter resulted in quick drinks right away and then ZERO attention/service and part of our bill being taken care of by the restaurant due to horrible service. We must have changed into camo gear, because no one even looked at us or cared we were there from the restaurant. It's sad when our 8 year old has noticed and inquires about the level of service. Hopefully management from Blue Heron can fix this problem, as we have heard the same feedback from friends and family that have been at the restaurant. Enough is enough!!!!!! read more

I'm a vegetarian, last time I came I got Mac and cheese which I didn't care for at all. This time I got a super tasty portobello mushroom burger that was amazing! Melted cheese with lettuce and a tomato hit the spot. It came with your choice of a side and I choose french fries. They gave me a lot of food which I loved considering I can eat as much as a cow! The only thing about this place I don't love is it has very loud music. Also they have very limited options for vegetarians and probably about zero for a vegan. It's mostly seafood and meat, which makes sense I suppose considering the name. read more

We have been very careful with Covid precautions because we are older and our daughter was pregnant and did not have the vaccine yet. Well daughter has now been vaccinated and we went out last night 7/16/21 with friends to Blue Heron that we have been to before Covid. Now I understand the restaurants have been under a lot of financial stress and lots of turnover in employees but last night takes the cake. I like to order bone-in wings buffalo style. I ordered and received my wings and when I go to pick up the first wing the bone is stone cold. I mean colder than my fingers temp cold. I am not going to eat chicken that has not been fully cooked (I do not need to get sick) so I finally get the attention of someone and its the manager who had been walking around. Now I am not one to make a scene and her solution was to re-cook the wings.... RECOOK THEM! She said they will "wash" off the sauce and re-cook the wings and put new sauce on them! Now I probably should have insisted that they make new ones but like I said I am not one to make a scene and went...okay, lets see how this comes out. Well they did just that but now the wings were overcooked in spots and just not good. While I did eat them (I was pretty hungry) they have lost my business in the future. This saving of the cost of the wings lost them a customer. I tipped the waitress well (not her problem) but come on.....don't be cheap with your solution to the problem - it tells me that you are cutting corners in many other ways. Not sure I will be sprinting back to this place in the near future which is too bad since it's one of my parents favorite places to dine. Pros: Patio- nice patio, but would be even better without all of the smokers smoke wafting over , but they need a place to go. Dining room or bar area to sit. Decent size menu with a decent variety to choose from. Decent food. My sandwich was good, the fries were syscoesque. Cons: The service on the patio stunk. We sat there for about 15-20 min while nobody came. Another table came in way after us and got served right away. We were told ours would be by in a few min. We finally had to go flag someone down to send her out. We were told it would be her in the first place and she acted like we were someone else's table and then said, why dont I just take your order. Wow, thanks. Really curt, and her actions and body language just felt like she wanted us to hurry up and go. I get it your busy or having a bad day, but the service was really disappointing here. We had to go ask for a kid menu, the hostess was another one who seemed a bit out off. The food was good, service was not. read more

We went for mothers-day dinner. Our waitress was not attentive at all. Waited 30 min's for waters. The good was cold and asked for supplies 3 different times for her to come back empty handed 3 different times. It was easier to go to the bar and get it ourselves. Another unsuccessful attempt at Blue Heron. My date and I enjoyed the patio for the first time. We ordered two dirty martinis that ended up being about $11 bucks each. Eeek! We're in Hugo not Mpls and it's only Absolute vodka. Our servicer was nice she expressed that she was new. I ordered the steak bites app and my date was informed it was Wing night so he ordered two orders of bone in wings. About 5-10 minutes later our server came back and indicated bone in was not on special. So we decided only on one order instead. Then all of a sudden my steak bite app came out. The server reassured us that my dates food would be right out. About 10-15 minutes went by and his one order of wings came out. Our server mentioned due to the boneless special his food got pushed back. His wings had white spots all over them FREEZER BURN! The server explained that they do no freeze their meat. Well I'd like to know where the freezer burn came from then? Are we going to blame the meat distributor on this one? Some how the meat got freezer burn. It's disappointing to eat in front of my date before his food is out and then his food isn't even edible. All out FAIL again for the Heron. Funny thing is we ended up going down the road to the Blacksmith for great service and burgers. It's sad that a establishment the Blue Heron as nice as it is lacks in the food department on multiple occasions. So many bad reviews on Yelp. You think they would make some changes! Come on Manager Amy! Instead of urging people to come back and spend more money fix your failing food! Give people a reason to rave about the food because we can see from most of the reviews that's where Heron struggles. read more

Okay, have to say we've been here many times before just because it's close, convenient and they have bingo on Wednesdays (also Monday & Saturday). The food has been okay. That aside, tonight gives me hope this place may be turning over a new leaf and upping their game! We've never had great service here. The servers always seemed to be there right away and then disappear after the food came. Well, tonight our server, Wyatt, restored our faith in The Blue Heron. He was great! Not only friendly (as all the staff always was BTW) but also on top of everything!! What a nice change. Very impressed. The other part that made the night was both of us decided to try something new on the menu. We had Spaghetti With Meatballs and the new Avacado Steak Wrap. They were both VERY good!! Got the Spaghetti baked with cheese on it and the wrap was just yum!! Do have to add that their french fries are addicitive. The last couple times we've been here a "newer" manager has come by to check on us and also went out of her way to make sure our Blue Heron rewards card was used to the most of it's benefit so maybe they hired someone to get things in shape. Whatever it is, good job! Makes me want to go back more often! read more

Service was quite good. We ordered the steak bites, Mac and cheese and the New Orleans pasta (combo). Steak bites were tasty. They were billed as spicy, but I didn't find them overly spicy at all. If pepper is too spicy for you, you may think it too hot, but I am a spice whimp and I thought they were good. Mac and cheese was a little bland and the sauce seemed thin, but overall was good. New Orleans pasta was quite good, and was a large portion. Would definitely order again. Overall for atmosphere, service and taste, 4 stars. Was a little on the pricier side for all of that, but we'd go again. read more

We just had our sister's bridal shower here and Blue Heron did such a great job! The area we were able to reserve was perfect for our shower. The food was really good. I personally had the buffalo chicken wrap and my sister had the House Salad. Both were excellent. Drinks were made well and our server went above and beyond to make sure we were doing great. This is my favorite spot in Hugo. I like the staff, the food portions are massive and is almost always excellent. For as many times as I've eaten here I've been disappointed very few times, and when I am disappointed it's usually something like to much dressing or cheese. read more

We've eaten here several times with mixed results. Lunch today was terrible. I ordered mshi mahi tacos. The fish was cooked to jerky. I tried to talk to our waitress, but she ignored my attempts to get her attention. Our drinks were never refilled. After waiting nearly 10 minutes for our bill, we left our table and went to the hostess stand to pay. The hostess found our waitress, who was surprised that I was unhappy with my meal or service. She was unable to process my credit card at the hostess stand, so left me standing while she left to run my card. I eventually found the manager in the bar, dealing with another complaint. The manager deleted the charge for my tacos, reran the bill, and suggested that no tip was deserved for the lack of service we received. read more

When the food arrives; it's hard to get the attention of an inattentive bartender. The chicken alfredo should have had a thick robust creamy sauce, some parsley flakes with a sliced chicken breast. What was served looked like it was poured out of a can. If that's your standard of quality food; there's no point in coming back. read more

We have been coming to Blue Heron for years. I know with Covid that times are tough, but...we came out last night and were very disappointed. I ordered the fajitas which I can normally split with my husband because there is usually too much food and at $17, I fully expected that. I had one fajita and barely had enough for another which was very disappointing. We were also told after the fact that it wasn't kids eat free night which it had been for years. Our server put our food on the table and did not come back until I asked a busboy (we had been finished for 20 minutes) to get our check. We had wanted water as our mouths were on fire from the food...but didn't get the water because it took too long. I spent $50 for one adult, a teen and a kiddo. We came only because it is close to home and convenient. The bad actitud and lack of personality from the server was inexcusable. She brought the wrong order and we asked to have it corrected her only comment was, that's strange. No apology or let me fix that right away. When she returned with the 2nd try the plate had nothing other than the meat. No dipping sauce, no garnish. Just a white plate and meat... the few times we have been here over the years the experience is always the same. Cut rate service in an attractive building. I guess that the justification for the over priced plates. It's no wonder there are so many negative reviews. Don't let the ambiance and we'll decorated inside fool you. This Hugo restaurant offered great food at decent prices in a fun atmosphere. We will return. I had the bacon bleu burger, a tasty meal with a juicy tomato, bleu cheese crumbles, crispy bacon and what appeared to be homemade potato chips. Our group had three kids meals: cheese quesadillas, corn dogs and a kid-size burger. They came with fries and a mini-ice-cream sundae. I have been here three or four times, and every time it is absolutely awful. The food is terrible, the service is crap (even on a slow day at lunch). Their only saving grace is their bloody mary bar on Sundays. Which is "build your own", so I guess I am really complimenting myself. My friend and I arrived at approximately 8:30pm on Thursday 12/27. The hostess barely acknowledged our presence before asking if we wanted to sit in the bar or in the restaurant. We said bar, and she led us to a table. Didn't say any kind greeting such as "enjoy your meal", etc. We waited as 5 (count them....FIVE) waiters passed our table chatting with each other. I tried to flag someone down to order a drink from, with no luck. After 15 minutes, I asked my friend if we should move to the restaurant side, where we might get service. I told the hostess we needed a new table because we sat for 15 minutes and no one came to our table. She barely mumbled an apology, and sat us in a booth on the other side. Our waitress came over, took our drink orders (which took about 15 minutes to get to us). We ordered the Thai spring rolls. And this is where it gets interesting.... Absolutely the WORST spring rolls I have ever tasted. Additionally, it was as though they were too lazy or too cheap to actually make individual rolls and they made one large roll that they sliced in to 'sushi' like pieces. It fell apart as we tried to grab it. They were dreadful. My friend and I were catching up for the holidays, which is why we chose a middle meeting space. As we sat, the waitress came over (already in her coat and scarf) to tell us her shift was over and that somebody else would be taking over. Talk about unprofessional. I get it. Your job is done, you want to go home. But SERIOUSLY in your COAT? Before you tell your table you are leaving? Ridiculous. And a poor reflection of management at this place. When Blue Heron first opened everyone was thrilled to finally have something other than ANOTHER sports bar in the Hugo - White Bear Lake area. It was a beautiful new building, the food was very nice but the food seemed to out-class the waitstaff (if that's possible). I remember wondering if they were even aquainted with their own menu so one could see the Blue Heron was in for some growing pains which is understandable. Two years later we stopped in for a quiet dinner on a weekend evening. We were seated in an area ajacent to the bar which had a surprisingly VERY loud DJ. It was clearly not catering to the over 30 crowd. Of course conversation was not happening at our table due to the music but the food was acceptable then something weird happened: About 1/2 way way through the meal our waitress (in her late 30s) became impatient and started pouting for some reason. I watched her carefully and found it slightly amusing but my husband has zero tolerance for snarky or pouty service and told her so. We were promptly handed our check and she never stopped by our table again. So there you have it. Thank-you-very-much. read more

Worst online ordering take out experience I've ever had. Put in order to be picked up at 5:45. I'm still sitting here at 6:15 and not happy. I put my order in by 5:00, you'd think that having an order ready in 45 minutes shouldn't be a problem. I've always thought the food was okay. Not great but I don't expect great in Hugo. Just a little competence would be nice. It will be a long time if ever this place sees any of my money again. My advice to anyone thinking of ordering online from here is don't. I've never been disappointed at The Blue Heron Grill... From being seated quickly to great food and service, you can't go wrong. If you have a concern, it's immediately addressed. The Blue Heron has three different eating areas; either a separate dining room with booths and a few regular tables, an active bar area with pub style tables, or a large patio area for dining outside. The dining room has somewhat dim lighting but the atmosphere is very friendly and inviting. I love sitting near the fireplace when sitting inside. The portions of the food are plentiful so you might want to consider your meal choice if you're looking for something on the lighter side. I often order a glass of Riesling prior to ordering my meal and it always comes nicely chilled. Even though there are a variety of food choices, I still tend to order seafood or chicken. One of my favorite dishes are the lettuce wraps, which are made with romaine lettuce leaves used as "boats" to stuff your marinated, shredded chicken into, and then drip on the yummy sauce! read more

This place is great! Not only do they have delicious steak bites, cheese curds, and macaroni and cheese, but they have great service as well! It has a lively and positive vibe throughout the whole restaurant! If you want to hang out with friends in the bar section, you can; If you want to have a fine dining experience, there is a dining hall! If you're really fond of the outdoors, there is also an outdoor patio overlooking a pond. The only thing negative about this restaurant is that the prices are a bit high. Although the food is great, my wallet hurts after each visit. Overall, this is a great restaurant to visit for any occasion. I highly recommend for anyone with some extra cash! read more

Good place to come for a nice casual dinner - a step up from Friday's or Chili's, but not stuffy or super expensive. Came with a group of 12 plus a toddler. We had made reservations in advance and they were able to accomodate us with no issues. Service was prompt and friendly. Everyone enjoyed their meals and I felt the prices were typical. I would have given 4 stars, but the Cuban sandwich I ordered wasn't that great and it was listed as one of their "signature" dishes. There aren't many choices in Hugo, so I would definitely go back again and order something else. read more

Stopped by The Heron for a light lunch before a long day of competitive fun with the lady. It's one of her local places and invited to come out and try it, so here we go. Very nice ambiance in there. Sports bar meets dining hall, with a solid separation between the two so you're not overpowered with drunks while you're sitting in the dining room trying to enjoy a meal. We took up residence in the bar area, which was solid for seeing people try and sober up with the bloody bar sitting next to us (and for some, keep the drunk times going from last night apparently). I opt for the Heron House salad, with chicken. The woman opted for the chef salad. For those looking for a sweeter salad, this is for you: Spring mix, Craisins, candied walnuts, bleu cheese crumbles & our signature pomegranate vinaigrette. Was a really good mix of sweet-salty given the ingredients. Veggies were crisp and fresh. I even managed to steal some not over cooked bacon (remember this for later) from my date to give me even more of a sweet-salty kick, which almost got me a kick in the shin, but, it's worth it for bacon. The proportion was really well sized for a salad. No complaints at all, and even the chicken was plentiful and not looking like some grocery store variety. I did get my hands on the chef salad after she had her fill (as is the case with damn near anyone I eat out with these days). Remember the bacon comment? Some of the bacon was totally over done, which thoroughly pissed me off. I don't get mad often, but, burning bacon to the point of it being like chewing on a chunk of wood will get me to the point of being pretty pissed. Veggies were solid, cheese was a nice fine shred, so no complaints there. Service was a bit lacking. The napkin covered empty plate I created sat there for some time before it was taken away. Not sure if I needed to make a flag to signal the plate was ready to be taken away, so maybe next time I'll try that. All in all, a solid place I'm sure I'll visit again, and no big issues with that. I'll be sure to test the bacon next time to ensure they don't over cook it. I don't give screwing bacon up 3 strikes. Get it right in two, or **** you. read more
