Loved this place from first taste when I had the Mint 2 Be at the gelato festival. The flavor tastes just like my chocolate mint plant. Plus it had little crumbly/crunchy chocolate pieces in them. They're know for having some creative flavors, which they didn't have much of on my stop. I did find out they remove gelato that's almost gone, maybe a small/medium cup, so if you don't see what you want see if they have any in the back. The blueberry cardamom and chocolate strawberry were well balanced. I didn't try too many this go around but everything was very good. I love their infusion methods and ingredients. I'm glad it's a bit of a drive or I'd go way more often. The location is nestled between a couple restaurants in the west side of the parking lot. There's plenty of parking too. read more

I have been craving for some good local Tucson ice cream for days & found this place thanks to Yelp. Ron the owner was very friendly & fun to talk with. I could feel his passion about the ice cream & gelato once I stepped into the store. He makes all of the ice cream & gelato every day in various refreshing flavors. We ended up buying two quarts of them during our first visit there ! Actually I really wanted to try their blueberry/cardamom ice cream but they did not have it the day of out visit. I could not sleep that night wanting to try it so badly so that I ran back ( drove back, I mean) to the store on the following day & bought two more quarts plus one large cup of the blueberry/cardamom gelato. I usually don't eat sweets that much -not like this but I ended up eating up this delicious ice cream /gelato for breakfast, lunch, dinner, & dessert on top of my regular meals but not gaining an ounce . It turned out their gelato is really healthy as Ron the owner uses only fresh & organic ingredients & he always experiments with different ingredients to create the most appetizing ice cream & gelato substituting healthier ingredients. Brand new spot and I nearly never give anywhere 5 stars on the first visit, but PLEASE go enjoy some sweet treats here! This corner of the Foothills has sadly lacked a frozen specialty shop since BYO closed, and Cold Stuff be left before then. Fortunately, we now have Blue Ice to satisfy our collective sweet tooth, and I bet gelato makes a great dessert after a meal of Peruvian chicken a couple of doors away. They share a terrific patio with Inca's, Subway, and Sunrise Cafe. Inside, the store is a cool clean blue; my 9yo son noted that he really liked the "simple" decor - "it's a nice blue without stupid posters everywhere." He also noted signs stating that coffee is coming soon, so I expect that the machines are not in yet, as they opened less than 2 weeks ago. As for the wares, the flavors are diverse and a good balance of innovative (blueberry chocolate cardamom, lemon ginger) and less unusual (stracciatella, chocolate amaretto). There's "bacio," which is chocolate hazelnut, mocha, AND coffee, among others. The selection is good but not overwhelmingly huge - just right. Prices are in line with the market, $4 for a small, which appears to be 3 or 4 ounces. Unlike some other gelato places, they will pack two flavors into a small, so I got to enjoy cherry with chocolate amaretto - chocolate covered cherry! The chocolate amaretto was just slightly chalky but still very good, and the cherry flavor was delicious and tangy-sweet. My junior tasters also enjoyed their selections, right down to the end of the refreshingly crispy cookie tube (I forgot what those are called). Two young employees were standing by helping us eagerly with samples and service, and they signed us up for the loyalty program. A third person who is presumably the owner (or a manager? I shouldn't guess but I am anyway) came out briefly to talk to them - hopefully in future she will have time for a chat with the customers. Blue Ice is still just getting going and I hope and anticipate that they will polish the rough edges, such as lack of internet / social media presence, and getting the coffee options going. I recommend heading there for a delicious treat, with a Yelp check in and review to give them a boost off the ground. I've grown to like this place more and more especially as apparently the quality at It's competitors has declined. I find the product flavors are excellent subdued and consistently the ice cream is creamy and good.The owner is the chef and of course that is largely responsible for the excellent results. The facility is neat and clean, and there are places to sit outside, which in the late afternoon is shaded by the building. Espresso is offered (but I have not tried it). Selection of gelato flavors is limited relative to other gelato shops. Like most gelato shops, the server will happily give you a sample of whatever is in the case. To my surprise, most of the flavors I tried were not to my liking. Actual gelato seems to have more milk fat than other brands I've tried, which others may prefer. Part of the appeal of gelato is the reduced amount of fat (and subsequently, calories). So okay overall, but not my favorite. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed this gelato place and it's (so far) my favorite one in Tucson. Right when you enter the door, the server is super friendly and helpful. Right away, I tried the tiramisu and the salted caramel; I ended up getting a small with the two flavors. The tiramisu was utterly divine, with just the amount of creamy and the taste of espresso. The salted caramel was excellent, too, and made up for the last salted caramel frozen treat I last tried that was overly salty. Not to mention, you can have amazing, homemade whipped cream added on top of your frozen treat! It's basically the cherry on the icing. I would definitely come again and try some of the other flavors, especially since it seems they have new flavors every so often. read more

This is my favorite gelato place in Tucson, and frankly, I'm all of Arizona. The staff and owners are friendly and have shared what makes their gelato superior, starting with ingredients they use. The pistachio specifically is imported from Italy and costs the business more to make it than they sell it for. The staff also cares about its customers. For example, staff had asked me about my parents who live close by and frequent the business. They knew to ask only because of my name, not necessarily they've seen me with my parents. Why would I make the tedious drive from downtown to the hinterlands of the foothills at least once a week? It's that good. The house favorite is the cookie butter flavor. The owner makes the gelato and comes up different flavors every week. He's a very amiable guy and he's pleased to let you try as many flavors and explaining each flavor. The gelato is less sweet and more rich than 'that other place.' I personally don't like my desserts too sweet and this place hits the right spot. My only complaint? I would give 100 stars if I could. This place is an absolute gem hidden in an outdoor shopping mall complex. We wandered over here after dinner at El Charro not expecting much and were completely blown away. There is a gentleman there, who I believe is also the owner, who greets you with such warmness. You can try as many flavors as you want; heck, he even MAKES you try so many different flavors that you wouldn't normally try! He does not care about holding up the line; he wants you to enjoy the experience of his shop and their gelato. THE SERVICE HERE IS FABULOUS. Now, onto the gelato. EQUALLY FABULOUS. I've had gelato in Italy. The product coming out of Blue Ice surpasses the stuff in the motherland. Bursting with flavor. Deep, authentic, genuine flavor. It's amazing.
